Yes, I have the same machine. It is a 148.12190. As you said the 5186 is the motor model number. You have to lift up the machine out of the base to see the model plate and serial number located on the front side middle.
To use different fabrics make sure you use the right needle for the thickness. If you wanted to try leather use a 16 or 18 needle and go slowly. If the machine has no problems you have a winner. If the machine seems to be having trouble or your needle breaks then you will have to try another machine. Trial and error works well. Depending on the leather thickness will determine whether the machine will be able to sew it. thanks Grandma Teppo
Thanks for your video. It’s very informative, and easy to follow, I’ve never used a sewing machine before. I’m trying to learn with an old Kenmore machine I just got gifted to me. After watching a few of your videos, I feel like I now have the confidence and the knowledge needed to try this out and hopefully not mess something up!! Thanks again!! One more thing, where is the actual model number on these machines? Mine looks almost identical to the one your using, except mine has one more knob.
I will look this up. I usually look up the machine on ebay and find the right bobbin. Once you have one it's based on how wide the bobbin is and how many holes on the outside distinguish one from another. They usually do not cost much even if you buy it new.
Thanks for the advice but I have always used 3 in 1 and it does not seem to have any ill effects in 40 years. If the machine stitches are the same on the top and the bottom of what ever your sewing it doesn't matter what the tension is since it could have been taken apart or something previous to my acquiring it. Thank you for your comment.
@@mannyteppo The thread tension may be off because per the manual you do not go under the first thread guide. You go straight over it. That may be adding the needed tension.
Tyvm for this video, but i must be honest and say the music is distracting, it is loud compared to your voices and so i cant turn it down. So maybe either make the voulme lower or just skip the music, people will be able to follow better. I am not trying to be mean, for people who are going to make any negative comments, it is feedback and i'm being polite. And honest
Because of this video I was able to get my great grandmothers sewing machine going and make new couch covers
That is awesome!
As a 21 year old I love and appreciate this
I started making my own clothes
Much love to you and your husband
thank you
Thanks for this video! I believe that this is actually a Kenmore 148-1219 though. The 5186 designates the motor.
OH, thank you. It's hard to find the exact machine number sometimes. I can't remember where it says that it's model 5186 but will look into it.

@@conklinw are you good at troubleshooting kenmore sewing machines? If so would you help me figure out why mine wont work? Model No 117.305
Barbara Channell I’m good at trouble shooting. Not necessarily sewing machines, but let me know how I can help.
Barbara Channell does the motor turn? If it doesn’t turn do you hear it hum when you press the foot pedal? Please describe what is happening

Can you Serge with it
Thanks for making this video.
My pleasure!
How much is it worth? A decent one? Will it do marine upholstery?
What size bobbin does this machine use, please?

@@mannyteppo Thank you! I bought a few sizes to try but they don't work.
The manual says model 6862 bobbin
Soo, you didn’t share how the settings on the right side work or what it they should be set on.
Lo pueden traducir en español ??
Does ot have a built in buttonhole?
Cómo ajustar de hilo
The part threading the bobbin is why I clicked on and the camera is staring at her hand the whole time, not the process, ugh, lol
Qué lástima así es mi máquina pero aquí no muestra la función de los dos botones que están a la derecha habla mucho cosas que no interesan
it's not a Sears Kenmore model 5186
I have a 5186 and does look different you're correct.
5186 is the motor model number, not the machine. This motor was used for several Kenmore models.
You should only use sewing machine oil ... never 3 in 1! Also your upper thread tension should not be set at 0.
Thanks for the advice but I have always used 3 in 1 and it does not seem to have any ill effects in 40 years.

Thank you, We live in an apartment and were trying to get rid of other people noises. We will turn it down for the next video. Appreciate your input.

Your music is too lloud
If you can remove that plate and get a close-up 5:04, it might help. Your is not my first tut.
