I just received one TODAY for FREE For our 17 year old grand daughter. Her name is Megan, & the machine came from Mary Jane. This one is a lovely light green! Mary Jane has passed away, & her son's are cleaning her adorable home. THANK YOU VERY MUCH for this video!!! My late mother-in-law would be pleased, too. She taught community ed sewing in Grand Rapids, Michigan.
I LOVE these old "Kennies"; I have several. They are dependable, smooth running and easy to use. If you have the right attachments and/or presser feet, the late '60's and 1970's models can do as much as today's modern machines, albeit just not automatically. And if you take good care of them, keeping them clean and lubricated, they'll never give you trouble. As a kid, I had a 158-14000 that I beat the s**t out of (I didn't know any better back then) and like the old Timex commercial, it "kept on tickin'". They are a joy to use.
S G can you please tell me how to,zigzag? I have a similar model and many years ago i thought I just switched from red dot to a numbered width and that switched to zigzag. But I’ve tried ever combination I can think of and it won’t zigzag!
Hi! Has it been a while since you used the machine? It might need oil and/or lube. To rule out a problem with your machine, have you moved the variegator lever to the white dot and tried some of those stitches? Have you changed your stitch width to something wider than 1? 3 or 4 would be a good test. Make sure you have the appropriate foot on your machine so you don't break a needle, and try a white dot zig zag. If this does not work, we'll go to Plan B. Is there a way to reach you 'offline' if we need to talk more in-depth?
I am so happy I have this machine now! Any tips when looking for presser feet? I see many of the snap feet attachments that say they’re not for vintage machines even if they are low shank. I’d love to buy a good variety of snap on feet and have lots to play with!
Hi Deanna, There are many snap-foot adapters available that will work with your machine and allow you to use all kinds of snap-on presser feet. I have one on my 148-14000 and it works perfectly. Visit www.sewingmachinesplus.com and type in "Low Shank 11 Piece Snap-on Foot kit". This kit includes the adapter and some very useful presser feet. You'll receive a blind-hem foot, a button sewing foot, a rolled hem foot, a zipper foot, zig-zag foot and more, plus it costs less than $25.00. It's on sale right now, so don't wait. You can also buy just the adapter if you wish. And if you have any other particular foot in mind such as a pin-tuck or ruffling foot, you'll find them there too. SMP is a VERY reputable dealer in machines and accessories. They even provide compatibility lists so you can be certain what you buy is appropriate for your machine. I buy from them regularly and have never been disappointed or had to send anything back. Buy this kit and you'll be able to use all the snap-on feet your heart desires. Enjoy your "new" Kennie. They are truly wonderful machines and will serve you well.
I just picked up one of these at a thrift store (for $10!) and it seems to be in nearly perfect working order! I don't know a lot about sewing, but this video really helped me get my bearings. Thank you!
Thank you so much for this video! I grew up in a home where we sewed everything, but after getting married I think I kinda rebelled against "handmade" for a while :( I even sold my machine. Then along come my daughters and they want to learn how to sew! It took me a while, but i finally decided it was time to buy a machine and I found this exact model on a yard sale site on Facebook. Then I got it home and realized I had no idea how to use this particular machine. So i decided to check UA-cam and viola! I came across this video! Thank you so much! We'll be off and running with sewing projects right after Christmas!
Thank you for this! I found this exact model in perfect working condition inside of an old wood sewing machine table at a Goodwill for $15. This is so helpful in learning to use it.
I recently picked this machine up at a thrift store. It was in great condition and fortunately it came with the manual and quick start guide. I love that all the attachments are standard.
just acquired one from a neighbor. Exact same model. Gotta check for all the parts and try it out.Manual would be nice but this lady with the tattoos on her arm showed us a lot,so hopefully I can get it working! Thank you lady, thank you.
I inherited my grandmother's beloved sears kenmore model 158.140001, and had NO IDEA where to even begin learning how to use it. Although this machine wasn't. the exact same, it showed me everything I needed to know to begin! Very imformative, detailed without it being lengthy. Well done!
I got this machine for Christmas in 1973!! It is still my favorite to work on although I have another one that is about 4 years newer that is a bit heavier. Love, love, love it. Thanks for the video.
Thank you! I have had this machine for 6 years and have only made one project on it because I was scared and had no exprience. My mom and aunt picked it out at a consignment store while on a visit here where I live in WA they are in CA. I come from a lineage of 3 generations of garment makers and didn’t care to learn growing up. I was a total brat and took them for granted. Now as a result of COVID I am learning how to make face coverings and have received good feedback on my masks so far. Any tidbits of information on how to maneuver this machine are very much welcome, so thank you!
Thanks so much for the video, I don't have a manual and my mom gave me this machine, I was going to spend $800+ on a sailrite but I have been sewing canvas for my boat at it's a dream, had to make a little wood bar for the reverse since it was broken. I had no idea what all the features were, it's working so well I just spend $20 on a new reverse switch. It is funny when I walk in the sewing store, I always get great help, just bought fabric for curtains for my sailboat, on to the next project. Steve
It's been a few years since you made this video, but I just showed my wife. She bought one yesterday at a flea market with a big box of attachments for $10. Apparently, she got a great deal. It needs a bobbin case, but I've found a bunch online. It costs more than the whole machine. Hahahaha. Thanks for the video.
Thank you so much for the video! I just got this machine from my grandmother but it was my great grandmothers.I have never sewn before I do have a manual but I am more a visual learner. So now I can put 2 and 2 together while looking at the manual!
I found this same machine in a table and has been sitting in my storage for a few years. I just pulled it out to see if it works, and to my surprise, it worked like a champ! Well....runs like a champ. I had to find a video to figure out how to thread it. Lol never used a sewing machine before. Lol so thank you for your demo, I'm going to refurbish the table into a beauty and learn.
It was so hard to find a great and informative video on the lovely vintage machine! I was gifted one by my grandmother in-law and couldn't remember much that she ran me through once. I'm a beginner and would love to see how to thread the bobbin and overall just get the machine set up for use.
My husband found this machine and my mom took it to her local sewing machine repair shop in Utica MI and the repair man fixed it and offered to buy it from us! No way. Thanks for the video need to find the different feet for it now :) I just have the straight stitch foot
Perfect this is just like I one I am using , been using it for years then stopped and am having some problems and I seen the picture of this machine and went that is just like my machine so am going to watch the whole video. I have five other sewing machines how ever this one is my favorite one out of all of them.
I just bought this very machine for 26 bucks at Habitat for Humanity and the bobbin winder was broken and the inside bobbin case was missing but I also noticed I could just use my bobbin case from my brother and wind it on my brother as well. can't wait to try it out!! Thank you for shariing this video!! I love it!!
What a coincidence. I also bought the same machine at a Habitat for Humanity Restore with the cabinet and a rolling seat/storage bin all for $20.00. It seemed to work fine, but I had it serviced anyway so now I'm into it for 80 bucks.
Rick P That's so ironic 😍😍 I thought it was a great buy especially for the price! The bobbin case was missing but i found out recently that its a class 15 bobbin case which works with my brother so i cant wait to get started sewing with it :) I hope you enjoy your machine 💖
Great video! I brought this exact model home today to repair it for a lady member of the church that I attend. Thankfully, the only things that I found wrong was that the bobbin was inserted into the bobbin case with its thread coming off of it in a counter-clockwise direction instead of clockwise, and the presser foot pressure was totally relaxed.
this video helped me SO MUCH ! although my model is 5 or so years older than this 1, a lot of the parts are quite similar. You did an amazing part at explaining what each part is & what its for. I've been messing around with my machine for about a day wondering why the hell the bobbin kept jamming. but it turned out that i just had lack of knowledge on what parts did what & it was just a tension issue. thanks again!
+Cierra Moten what model do you have ?? mine is a - Modifier- is the name it has in upper right hand corner - I looked and the model is - 158-16250= Im have trouble with the foot that was on it when I got it , -it is a strange foot ,, no hole in it -just a slit where the needle is , so when I move the knobs , it moves the needle just enought to hit the side of the foot , and break- I canot figure how to get the foot off, - doesnt seem to screw like the others I have used , it seemss to be connected to a long arm-and a screw higher up
I just purchased the very same model for $50 for my granddaughter as she is interested in learning to sew.. Stagecoachsewing is demonstrating Model 1410 manufactured 1971-72, mine was made the following year..
Yes! Finally found a video for my machine! Mine is a little different though. My reverse switch is brown plastic one and my straight stitch dial has an orange dot not an S. This was so helpful! I didn't even know my plate could be switched for straight stitch or zig zag. Thank you!
I have two of these machines. I got my first one when I was 12yo. My second about maybe ten years ago. Mine have all same features but with the free arm. It is a great machine that is also great for heavy duty sewing.
Britt Z Hi, could you possibly send me a copy of the manual?? Or make a quick video with snapshots of each page? Been looking for it for quite awhile now, can't find it. Tia
I'm actually also looking for this manual! I think the Sears site has the wrong one posted. I was thinking of writing them, but if you had a digital copy, I'd really appreciate it! :)
Omg than thank you for this demo! I have my mom's Kenmore 158 from late 60's early 70's and didn't know what some of the features were..this one has all the same features just a different case style..Now if I can just figure out why the presser foot is stuck down 🤔
I just bought the 1756 model at a thrift store and I was wondering what the center of the throat plate was about. cool. I have to get a new bulb and find some cams for it. I can't wait to sew with it after I clean it up and oil it. going to download a manual for it if I can find one
This machine is a vintage? I didn't know that. I have one bought it off a friend when my Singer died because of one little plastic part. I hate plastic! I posted to Facebook about the death of my sewing machine after 25 years of good use and how I wished for an all metal machine. And that is how I got this one. My sewing room is decorated with a vintage theme so hearing this machine is also vintage makes that just perfect.
Thanks -- lots of useful info for the freebie machine I was given (with no manual and some problems that have been fairly easy to fix, thanks to youtube.)
My husband’s grandmother passed away very very recently. She was still using the sewing machine before she passed. Sadly I did not get a chance to learn how to sew with her 😞 I am slowly looking around her work area. It's very sad. sucks shes gone from covid.
Hi!! So excited I found this tutorial. The pieces that hold the bobbin fell apart after a jam. Can you post an assembly vid or pic of what it should look like when assembled pls. The area that holds the bobbin under machine
My husband’s grandmother passed away very very recently. She was still using the sewing machine before she passed. Sadly I did not get a chance to learn how to sew with her 😞 I am slowly looking around her work area. It's very sad. sucks shes gone from covid. But it notice her machine a a bit different from yours....
I think this is more middle 1960's. In the 70's, Kenmore was putting its stitch dials in front on the top facing you, rather than on the left side of the machine. Also, in the 70's plastic was replacing a lot of metal. I had two new 70's Kenmores and loved them. granny albuquerque
Only one thing you got wrong here. The thread does not go through both guides at the needle location, not unless you are using a double needle. Otherwise you thread through the left guide. So the main reason this machine has a second spool pin up top is for double-spool sewing, not for bobbin filling.
I had one of these with the cams on top. I gave it to my daughter who started getting interested in sewing. I'm thinking of getting her a new one and see if I can get the work horse back. Is that fair??? Hmmm not sure?
Thank you! I picked this exact model up at a thrift store recently. The reverse knob broke off, though. But I knew it was a solid model. I’ll be able to clean it tomorrow. If anyone knows how to fix the reverse button please let me know.
Really enjoyed this video. I inherited two sewing machines, one of which is this very model. I have not ever sewed with a sewing machine before but I’d really like to learn how to. Although I must admit that after watching this video I’m a little intimidated. Reason being is that one of the things you did (I think it was during the threading process) was a multi step process that you described as being very basic and being that I was lost after just a few steps then I hear you say how basic this procedure was and I was left thinking: F*ck me, I’ve gotta lot to learn here before I’m gonna be able have any hope of running this thing lol... Again, great video and keep up the good work!
I have a kenmore 158.950. My first sewing machine. Lent it to a friend and now it has has been returned (years later) in a mess. I have cleaned and oiled it. The hand wheel just spins and the needle arm does not engage. Is there a fix that you can point to or do I need to give up on my long lost sewing buddy.
I found my mom's 158.7300 Sears Kenmore sewing machine and no manual instructions to follow so I've been watching how to videos, but none had a sewing machine similar to mine, but yours did. My problem is threading a bobbin so that the needle is stopped from going up and down while threading and I tried moving the wheel towards me to initiate the lock but it doesn't move. Is there a different way to lock the needle from moving while I thread a bobbin? I wish I could find a manual, but it appears there aren't any available. Can you help?
I have a Kenmore slightly older and am t rying to get it working smoothly. When it makes a stitch, it seems to bind when the thread arm is at the top of its movement. I've greased everything very well. What should I do to relieve that bind? Sometimes it binds so much the belt will not pull?
I have this exact machine and the foot control sticks in the on/sew position and I have to slip my foot under the lever and lift it to stop the machine from sewing. Do you have any advice? I have opened up the foot control and cleaned and that helped but only for an hour or so.
I have an old Kenmore sewing machine I'm learning about and the problem I'm having is what you left out, putting more thread on the bobbing. How to get the spin thread on bobbing to turn on.
Hello, I have a Kenmore 385 machine that belonged to my mother. I'm trying to do some maintainance on it, and oil it, but don't see a way, to remove the top cover, Any ideas ?
Hello! I was wondering if you could help me. I recently acquired a vintage Sears Kenmore model 1801 sewing machine. I have not had any luck getting information on this machine. I don't even know how to thread it. Can you help me?
I have this kenmore 158.1410 and it sounds like the handwheel is rubbing on the body of the machine. Is there supposed to be something there to prevent the handwheel from actually contacting the side of the machine? A response from anyone will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance. Nevermind. I took the handwheel off and did not quite have the side panel properly seated. Happy sewing..
I just bought what looks like this same machine on eBay, except it doesn’t have a base like this one does. Is that a problem? Or does it just mean it’s a different model or something? Any info would be appreciated!
GREAT VIDEO. I have this exact same machine, and it works like a charm. It used to be housed in the wooden stand that you could purchase it with back in the 1970's. We got rid of this wooden cabinet/stand. But now, the machine has a few protruding metal pieces at the bottom (that used to go into the wooden stand in some fashion)... so now it doesn't sit nice and sturdy when placed alone on a table. But I see that you have some sort of matching metal base for it. ANYBODY KNOW WHERE I CAN FIND THIS BASE or this sort of thing for this sewing machine?
Mine came with a carrying case that the machine sits in,as a base. The top just comes off.Maybe you can find one similar or just build your own base.Shouldn't be too hard to make.
Felicitaciones es una máquina completa, aquí desde Chiapas México , me gustaría que su tutorial fuera en español, acabo de adquirir una máquina en ese mod.
There are so many different types of needles to choose for this machine, I bought some only to find out I bought ones without the flat shank. I know about the sizes and type of tips, RP and SP and different materials used for the needles. It would help me if anyone could send me info about ordering the proper needles so I don't order more of the wrong types again. I see some with the flat shank and style I want, is this all I need for these to work properly in this type of machine?
The reverse cycle stretch stitch is not working on mine, it just wants to go in reverse. I am not sure where to get it serviced, or even if I can get it serviced being that it's as old as it is. Any suggestions?
I have a Kenmore model148.12400 and having trouble picking up the bobbin thread when I turn he hand wheel, Does the neddle need to be inserted in a certain direction? I do not have a manuel

This model Kenmore was one of the very last of the "All Metal" sewing machines!
An excellent machine that will last for decades.

I've owned my machine (just a little newer, but not by much) since the 1980s. It's had a "tune-up" three times and is still going strong!
I have a 1968 vintage Kenmore - similar features and still going strong after all these years. It's been a great workhorse machine.
I have one of these and it also takes cams, I got it in the 70s and it still works great
Just found one that was out on the curb. Can't wait to get started. Great video. It was very helpful!

Love this! I have my Grandmother's old machine, identical to this model. Just had it tuned up and a new motor put in and it runs like a dream.
Thank you for this demonstration. I was given a 143 by my sister who got it second hand. Looking forward to using it.

thank you very much; you are very enjoyable to listen to. and you really know your stuff; you have been very helpful.

Just got an old kenmore very similar to this from a friend of a friend! I’m so excited!
I was looking at getting this machine used.....thanks for the video!
I had a machine that looked just like that, but it was from the late 60's. I traded it on a newer model 1803 in the earlier 70's.😍
Just got one at an estate sale for $5.00. Have not had time to check it out yet. Thanks for the video.
...omg finally some information on my machine...I love it...tough as nails, thank you for the demo
I have the manual for this machine but you were way better at showing what it can do. Thanks for the tips.
Britt Z
Hi, could you possibly send me a copy of the manual?? Or make a quick video with snapshots of each page?
Been looking for it for quite awhile now, can't find it. Tia
I'm looking for the manual also! Anyway you could send a picture of it?
I'm actually also looking for this manual! I think the Sears site has the wrong one posted. I was thinking of writing them, but if you had a digital copy, I'd really appreciate it! :)
I need the manual too.
If anyone finds a manual on this machine I too would love a copy. Have been looking forever!
Omg than thank you for this demo! I have my mom's Kenmore 158 from late 60's early 70's and didn't know what some of the features were..this one has all the same features just a different case style..Now if I can just figure out why the presser foot is stuck down 🤔
Did you figure it out?
Just showed a man how it's done. Thank you.
Definitely 1971-1972. I got mine as a high school graduation gift.
Wonderful, helpful FUN video. Thanks so much for sharing!
I just bought the 1756 model at a thrift store and I was wondering what the center of the throat plate was about. cool. I have to get a new bulb and find some cams for it. I can't wait to sew with it after I clean it up and oil it. going to download a manual for it if I can find one
Great video had no idea how to use the knobs or thread this. Ty for posting
I have a kenmore a lot likke that and it still works perfect I got it from sears back in the 70s
Thank u so much !! I really learned a lot from you I will keep you pulled up in case I need more help thank you again
Thank you so much for this video- my mom couldn’t get hers to go and this helped so much!!!
Please explain to me how to get my bobbin stitch to look as nice as my top? I just got this baby, love how you explain.
Thank you! I finally know how to use this machine my friend gave me!
That looks like my Grandma's old machine, I recently acquired a 1914, it runs nice and smooth but I don't have the cams for it.
Hi!! So excited I found this tutorial. The pieces that hold the bobbin fell apart after a jam. Can you post an assembly vid or pic of what it should look like when assembled pls. The area that holds the bobbin under machine
Thank you so much for sharing. It's very helpful.

But it notice her machine a a bit different from yours....
This was lovely! And so, so helpful!! Thank you!
I think this is more middle 1960's. In the 70's, Kenmore was putting its stitch dials in front on the top facing you, rather than on the left side of the machine. Also, in the 70's plastic was replacing a lot of metal. I had two new 70's Kenmores and loved them. granny albuquerque
I received this model as a birthday gift in 1972, so it was definitely being sold in the 70s!
I have the model 158 14101. Not sure how old it is. It looks and works like a new one.
Only one thing you got wrong here. The thread does not go through both guides at the needle location, not unless you are using a double needle. Otherwise you thread through the left guide. So the main reason this machine has a second spool pin up top is for double-spool sewing, not for bobbin filling.
I love that you know this!
Looked at about 15 videos and the manual could not find out if it threaded the needle front to back. Thank you!
Does anyone have the manual for this machine? I would love to have one.
I just got one yesterday at a goodwill for $15 the spool pins are popped off how can I replace these everything else is in amazing condition
I have a Kenmore slightly older and am t
rying to get it working smoothly.
Thank you, do you currently have any high shank Kenmores available in your shop? -Tina
I love this video but what number did you use to do the reverse stretch Stitch
I love my machine. I actually sew leather with my machine. Easy-to-use because I need an Easy-to-use machine because I have not hands.
I have a 158 14001 table model. I can’t get the thread to come up with the Bobble any tips
Hello, I have a Kenmore 385 machine that belonged to my mother. I'm trying to do some maintainance on it, and oil it, but don't see a way, to remove the top cover, Any ideas ?
I have this machine inside a wooden cabinet. I want to do free motion quilting on it, can I. Help!
Pearl Lucas yes i think you can
Hello! I was wondering if you could help me. I recently acquired a vintage Sears Kenmore model 1801 sewing machine. I have not had any luck getting information on this machine. I don't even know how to thread it. Can you help me?
What' does the u on the top of the machine means
Hello, I have the model 2142 but the pedal won't move the needle up and down. Do you know what may be the problem please?
Is it necessary to thread that bottom bobbin for the machine to thread or can you just thread the top and it still work?
Would this machine be appropriate for bag making?
My mom has a 158.12410 and is having issues lowering the feed dogs. She has lost her manual. Any suggestions?
I have this kenmore 158.1410 and it sounds like the handwheel is rubbing on the body of the machine. Is there supposed to be something there to prevent the handwheel from actually contacting the side of the machine? A response from anyone will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance. Nevermind. I took the handwheel off and did not quite have the side panel properly seated. Happy sewing..
Hi my wife has a sewing machine like this the model number of hers is #158:14101 and she is needing to know the thread size that it takes?
I just bought what looks like this same machine on eBay, except it doesn’t have a base like this one does. Is that a problem? Or does it just mean it’s a different model or something? Any info would be appreciated!
I have a sewing machine much like this one. Mine is a model 1320. Do you know how to change the drive belt?
Mine is a 158-10400 love it
Does these machines sew thick material like leather?
blue Cass yes
My sister gave me this machine. Is there a special foot for a blind stitch hem? Also what setting would I use?? Zig zagging..
How do you do button holes on this machine
The reverse cycle stretch stitch is not working on mine, it just wants to go in reverse. I am not sure where to get it serviced, or even if I can get it serviced being that it's as old as it is. Any suggestions?
I have a Kenmore model148.12400 and having trouble picking up the bobbin thread when I turn he hand wheel, Does the neddle need to be inserted in a certain direction? I do not have a manuel
The flat side of the needle needs to face the back of the machine.
Great dependable machine..
Gracias. Saludos desde Mexico
