poor baby. and to think that he only has one parent to go through this with him is even more heartbreaking. divorce took most of its toll on the baby boy, it’s brutal to witness.
The incident likely happened at James Michael Levin playground in Central Park. Ted, with Billy in his arms, is running along E. 76th Street to Lenox Hill Hospital. The first street Ted crosses is 5th Avenue & then the 2nd street he crosses with the big median is Park Avenue. Interesting fact: Popeye's voice actor, Jack Mercer died at that same hospital about 5 years after this movie came out.
I know this is every parent's nightmare but this happens, also under the watch of several responsible adults. Children hurt themselves. Unless you keep them in an isolated plastic bubble (which no one can actually want for their children), it's what they do. Luckily, kids are "designed" to fall, so most accidents won't break them. What matters is that act quickly, take care of the problem, listen to the doctors, and comfort your scared child. That's responsibility!
I had stitches done when I was little. My sister accidentally pushed me in a swimming pool and I was covered in blood and the safe guard picked me up and checked my wounds. I later got taken to a doctor who gave me stitches and she said, we’ll use a small needle so it won’t show a scar, and my brother was like “no, biggest needle as ever! Make him look cool with an impressive scar!” Week later my parents took me in to have the stitches removed and the surgeon couldn’t speak a word of English, he sat in a cafe outside the surgery and my mum spoke to him in French because it was the only language the two spoke together. He dealt with my cut, and it’s still vivid in my memory. Good practice, scared but responsive parents. Best environment for a scared child. My advice for parents is don’t be scared, you are an amazing parent just for looking after your child in a time of crisis. It’s not as bad as you think. Be proud that you respond and look after your child.
This scene is brilliant directing because it is at this point Ted finally develops 100% into a proper dad. When we are first introduced to Ted, he starts off as a poor parent as he puts work over his family including Billy much to the dismay of Joanna causing her to leave him. At first Ted struggles to look after his son as he doesn't know how to cook his son breakfast and doesn't even know what class he is in at school. But as the film progresses Ted develops into a better parent and grows much closer to Billy. Him running to the hospital in panic when Billy cuts himself shows how much he really now loves and cares for him. Even though Joanna wanted him back, she realised how selfish she was after winning the court case and knew she didn't deserve Billy for walking out on him which is an unforgivable act and something she will live with for the rest of her life. But she actually redeemed by letting Billy live with Ted permanently, showing that if she loved her son, she make sure he was happy first, and taking him away would only ruin the happiness he had with his dad.
0:48 "hold it" HE SHOULD HAVE SAID "I'm walking here", JUST LIKE HIS CHARACTER RIZZO SAID THE SAME THING IN "Midnight Cowboy", CAUSE IT'S A CLASSIC, AND IT'S WHAT MOST PEOPLE SAY WHEN THEY WALK, OR RUN ACROSS THE STREETS NOWADAYS
Me and my sister took turns going to the emergency room. The staff knew my mother on a first name basis. Such were the adventures of generation x childhood.
Just a month or so before I turned five, I was playing in my room with a blanket over my head and spinning around. I lost my balance and fell on my chin, requiring about seven stitches. When I was older, my mom told me that this event occurred on a momentous date and time in history. November 22, 1963, approximately 1:30 p.m., Eastern Standard Time.
Interesting tidbit: Dustin Hoffman played a leading, Oscar-nominated role in two movies taking place in New York and where he forcefully comes across the path of a driving car on the street. This one, and MIDNIGHT COWBOY…. Also, both films won the Best Picture Oscar…
My rule with my child and she's almost 13 now, but whenever she has a friend over, is to have an adult percent always because something could happen and I'm held liable for her or him.
When I was born, I had eye surgery for days and I wasn't alive until 3 months in 2009. So I was concerned about my eyes. Also for autism, that was my symptom. Pneumonia was my actual disease. My chest was ok, but for my brother Bryson, having asthma and heart surgery was a disease for him. Probably, he was doing alright. By the way, he uses his inhaler to breathe and take 2 puffs every day, for me, I take some medicine for focusing. When I was 13, My ASD and ADHD, A.K.A, Autism Spectrum Disorder and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder was getting a bit focused in school. Then I decided that my parents tried to homeschool me but it was going alright.
A parent should always stay with their child, if they have to go through it so should a parent, never listen to a Doc who says”parents unusual wait outside”, or they try to send you to a room they know is so far you wont hear them screams
It was the airplane toy breaking and basically stabbing him in the face that did it. I tripped and fell one time, normally no big deal, but in that case I happened to be holding a wine glass and needed six stitches in my hand.

This is the film’s climax to me. Ted can’t turn back to the old Ted after this.

As a single father I can see the amount of love he feels for his son and how nervous he was when he was having stitches put in.
I’m surprised they didn’t put billy to sleep for the part where they put stitches on him
They don’t put you to sleep for stitches. Besides, that adds a huge, unnecessary risk to the procedure.

Dang the quality of the acting... It's unfortunate that sometimes accidents like this happen. They literally take a second, and it is noone's fault.
It was clearly Margaret's fault. She wasn't paying any attention to him and turned away from him to tell her stupid story.
