The subtle detail of him leaving his portfolio on the desk so he would get back in.
I noticed that as well. He wanted a path back in.
@@keithm9337or the opportunity for them to review his work again
yup, glad you noticed it
good eye.
They could have given him his bag back and told him to fuck off
I’ve noticed Dustin Hoffman is at his best when he’s doing scenes where he’s agitated. He really sells the struggle of the character he’s playing to the audience.
100%. If you've yet to see it, his performance in the movie Chef was incredible, in my opinion.
@@sqsp Yes, I’ve seen Chef, which is one of my favorite movies to watch. Dustin Hoffman has a small part to play in that movie, but he makes the conflict Jon Favreau is up against in having a boss that isn’t listening to what he’s capable of doing and only wants him to cook what’s on the menu in the restaurant he owns believable.
Straight time would be another good example
Yes, yes, the overplayed neurotic Jewish guy.
Tootsie... 😅
Now thats a man willing to grab the entire world by the throat for his son.
Prefer much more a father who would grab the world by its balls for his son
Women trying to steal their kids from fathers for a very long time
I was thinking the same thing. That's the irrepressable force driving him. Well said.
A true gentleman, and a real man, he did not play the victim card. He didn’t involve his divorce or his personal problems. He did not say anything to anyone.
That “one time offer” was the only line I remember after seeing this movie over forty years ago. I have always wanted to use it during job interviews, but just couldn’t. Thank you for posting it.
I immediately thought of the job interview scene in Trainspotting
I always wished I had those cojones to do an interview like that
I would be suspect of someone that pushy, who offered no explation as to why he was so pushy.
@@keithm9337 - He could only pull that off because his work was top of the line.
@@johnnyohanian4237 that’s why this is a movie
Great movie. For those who haven't seen it yet or don't remember, his divorce attorney said that if he didn't have a job there would be no chance he would get custody of his son.
Saw this movie when it came out and I was 18 years old. Many scenes made me cry. Divorce is HARD.
I like how he's left out in the party to wait uncomfortably to see if he got the job. How many of us have felt that way in just ordinary social situations.
Now, I'd like to talk about a raise.
😁
Lol
Cigarettes, alcohol, physical contact flirting... office parties were off the chain back in the 70s.
They were like that in the '90s too, sans the smoking but otherwise. '80s office parties also had the smoking but less so
You forgot cocaine for those in the loop.
You forgot to mention drugs, quickie office sex, dangerous dares, and embarrassing-border-line illegal sexual misconduct. It's truly amazing to think just how "politically incorrect" MOST of those parties were ....for several decades.
So what it was great times
is that all you can say about this clip? good lord, what a waste on you.
Small detail… I love the way the senior executive stares at him blank faced until the second he sticks out his hand for a congratulatory handshake. Nice direction by Benton.
This was really NOT a hard decision for those two men. Of COURSE they wanted to hire him. They knew he could do the job (and do it well), the work needed to get done, and he was willing to take a pay cut. Of COURSE hire him immediately before he goes, elsewhere. It was a no brainer even if the way it was handled was unorthodox and unprofessional on Kramer's part.
@@paulcolburn3855 I gave a thumbs up, but in reality, in most cases they would ask him why he left his previous employment. It's kind of an oversight in the film, but at the same time, it makes sense that if they were in a kindly holiday mood, they on some level could have chosen to give him the benefit of the doubt (as I wish more employers would in such cases; often, their go-to approach is to grill an applicant and force them to explain, show why they should be given a chance, especially if it's obvious they've become unemployed for some unstated reason). The scene is, in fact, more subtly wonderful in this sense: you can see how otherwise hard-nosed executives (the one called in from the celebration at first says, rather gruffly, "okay, you've got ten minutes" as if annoyed from being dragged away from the party) are warmed by the holiday spirit. If that hadn't been a factor, the job application could easily have gone the other way. They obviously preferred giving a desperate guy a job during the holiday to sending him home devastated. When you think about it, the gruff guy was about to go on vacation: could a normal person enjoy that vacation after ruining another person's holiday? Or reading in the paper his interview, rather than taking the elevator, jumped off the roof after being rejected? I think you're right it was a no-brainer decision, but vastly more so because of the holiday context.
I really like the shot at 3:34 where he sits there all serious waiting for the decision, amidst all the party goers
Longest 30 seconds of his life...
When you ask for the sale, the first one who speaks loses.
It's always weird walking in to apply for a job, looking around at all the strangers who might soon be your co-workers.
Hoffman is telling you how happy they are and hiding his sadness at he might loose his son if doesnt get the job
Great contrast of moods. Everybody's so happy oblivious to how serious it is for him
The two guys that were the bosses had a hard exterior but you could tell at the end they were really kind and genuine people and were willing to help another person in need wish more execs were like those two.
are you serious or being sarcastic because in my view the execs were heartless bastards who saw a great money saving opportunity by hiring him
@@johnwest194 But he came to them.
Never say, "I need a job" during an interview. Of course you need thw work or you wouldn't be applying. You're trying to sell them on the idea that they need you, not the other way around.
Interesting. I did not see it that way. I thought they were taking advantage of another person in need.
@BigBri550 , That may be true but in this case, Ted Kramer was desperate for a job right away so he was thinking what he had to say right then and there. It would have been different if he had been employed right then and wanted to change jobs.
I saw this movie in high school when it first came out and it was depressing, I remember thinking I'm never gonna make it as an adult. Boy, was I right.
That's why you aren't making it as an adult.

That acting was brilliant by Dustin Hoffman.
He was determined to get a job in 24 hours, from putting pressure on the unemployed agent to being firm with the bosses at his interview.
It goes to show that sometimes you need act tough to get what you want.
I think the bosses were giving Ted a secret test of character to see if he was worth joining & his determination proved that.
It's a freakin movie! This wouldn't happen in a million years. Not that it couldn't, mind you. But this is a movie and it makes for entertaining drama.

I like the continuity detail with the clock in the foreground.
Wow I never noticed that detail but that's genius the representation of time running out for him...
Yes me too
What you don't see here is his DEEP fear of going before the custody judge, after the holiday, still unemployed. This is why he's so desperate. What really seals it is his insistence for an immediate hire or denial. It shows his employers confidence and also makes them think if they don't hire him now they'll regret it later.. Brilliant.
He takes command of the interview. Risky, but smart move
He also has nothing to lose, as you note it's pointless to wait until after the holidays, it's all or nothing.
It shows that this is a movie. Aka fiction.

I agree. I miss the way it was.
This could work. The portfolio would have to dictate the ask. What would you be sacrificing making an offer now versus then?
It wouldn't work then; he'd be seen as way too desperate and difficult, and they would certainly ask about his previous employment, why he left, and why he's be so eager to take a lower paying job. And unfortunately, there really is no right answer for that.

This could work if you are known in your field. He was. Today, then, and in the future. But not for an unknown.
A great movie will always walk the delicate line between FICTION/FANTASY and REALITY. This scene is well-filmed and acted. Kudos to all involved. Is this a slice of reality? NO.
really appreciate the news flash champ, I bet you are a ton of fun at a party
The way he crosses out the ad while walking in the first scene is a bit cheesy, but the way that he suddenly and aggressively hands to phone to the employment agency guy is very good.
honestly, this is how people got their foot in the door in the mid-70s 80s, and early 90s, it's not "what you know" but who you know and how-to-ask-for-it. Bullet points are in the pudding bub.

As a 60 year old seriously under employed highly qualified man who has tried everything I can tell you this is as Hollywood as it gets. If only it were THIS easy.
Here's a tip on divorce ex wives and lawyers! Stand up to a bullying ex who uses the kids to hurt you. Walk away from lawyers and family courts and let the step dad do all the work !!
Dustin Hoffman has the best smile
Love his aggression lol
True, but employers would see him as way too desperate and would probably need references.
"If you could just look in your card catalogue... I'll take anything." "Wellll, They're auditioning for male strippers down at the Ramrod Club.." "Ok..I'll take ALMOST anything..."
Real world: "Ok, if you have to know right now, the answer is NO. Good luck to you, Mr. Kramer."
Not sure they knew they were saving $4800 they had to got him right there
I want to think that something unspoken was apparent to the two gentlemen, something that said it is the right thing to do to hire Dustin. Maybe because of Christmas, maybe a slight hint of desperation in his voice, whatever. And yes, saving a little $ didn't hurt, either!!
@@kaitiscarlett9022 All the above....plus being a real go-getter who didn't shy away when told him they'll think about it etc...most people would've gave in, but he didn't cave. Probably not, when they could get that level of talent on the cheap. He'd probably be off the board and handling major accounts within 18 months. Plus having talent like that, land in your lap, from a major competitor was a coup.
The thing IS though, he doesn't get that answer, unless he has the goods.
If I remember correctly, however, having a job wasn't enough to win him the custody case. Didn't he lose the case?
MANAGER : "Mr Kramer, could we talk privately for a moment ?" KRAMER : "Sure >TO EXEC< Would you mind waiting outside ?" MANAGER : "No I meant could me and HIM talk privately..."
Hollywood always inspired me. It is like Christ and His 45s sometimes, giving hope when I needed most.
What he accepted would be the equivalent of a $21k annual pay cut today. It's not unprecedented, he should easily be able to prove his worth within a year or two at most, and get himself back up to his previous salary.
But moreso I'd be curious as to the percentage paycut he took. I'd assume it was around 15-20%.
@monkeyb1820 in the novelization of the movie, if I recall, he took the new job for $24.5k. Which is about $103k in today's money. So yes, 20% is about right.
@@paul16451 it's a big paycut, but in a pinch, for the quandry he was in, it's do-able.
This is Dustin Hoffman's best role. Hands down.
I beg to differ. His role as Raymond in Rain Man was the most difficult to play and he absolutely nailed it, better than he did this role.
great scene ....but they left out the part when he is leaving and kisses the girl !!
To this day I still can't believe this sappy soap-opera film won Best Picture instead of "Apocalypse Now."
How true this explanation is I don’t know, but I’ve heard it was because The Deer Hunter had literally just won Best Picture, and they thought that the country needed a break from being reminded of the horrors of Vietnam.
@@patrickc3419 If true, then it's the worst possible reason of all. Because (1) they based their decision on something other than the merits of the film itself (which is the ostensible purpose of the awards in the first place) and (2) it's highly-presumptuous of them to decide unilaterally whether the country as a whole "needs a break" from _any_ one type of movie. Speaking personally, I could use a break from all the dumb comicbook superhero films we've been bombarded with the last 10 years for example, but I wouldn't presume to try to dictate that preference onto the rest of the country.

There was such an article from 1979 where he tried to claim that an 80 year old woman had not paid her rent while in the hospital; she had receipts to back up her claim but still had to go to court to fight that evil bastard.
It was also very dirty, as pollution was a huge problem. Not just that, but litter, people not cleaning up after their dogs; there was also a very big real estate crash from 1975 to 1980, as fewer and fewer people wanted to live there. As far as the Twin Towers, that was a huge eyesore on the skyline, just a bland ugly sight; the tragedy of 9/11 doesn't change any of that.

I've never seen this movie, but remember that it's about a couple getting divorced. After seeing what a jerk Dustin Hoffman's character is in this 1 clip, it's no surprise his wife wants a divorce.
She leaves him and their young son and then decides she wants custody. He loses his previous job because he's trying to raise his son alone. He needs another job fast or he risks losing custody of his son. Hence his pushiness.
