ORICO 2.5 Inch Transparent USB3.0 HDD/SSD Enclosure Review (2139U3)

  • Опубліковано 18 сер 2024
  • Today we are going to look at a 2.5 inch drive enclosure from ORICO that brings something a little different to the table aesthetically speaking. As you can see, this drive enclosure is 100% transparent allowing anyone to see the HDD / SSD housed inside. On top of being somewhat unique, the ORICO 2139U3 is also easy to use and boasts decent speeds for a budget drive cage.
    I forgot to mention this in the video: my test machine is a Lenovo T430 with 8GB of DDR3, USB 3.0 SS, a Quad core Intel I7 3612QM, and a 120GB ADATA SP550

    I bought a couple of these some time ago (5.50 euro/piece), I can wholeheartedly recommend them.
    The downside is they show scratches, but on the plus side the plastic is actually flexible and not brittle as I thought it would be.
    I accidentally dropped it from about 50cm on hard floor tiles and it survived with no problems.

    seagate or wd should start building HDDs with a transparent case, so you can see the hard drives heads moving around

      Shhhhhh....Don't give them any ideas. I think the Raptor line had a drive bay window in the HDD housing, but you could never see the drives as they were typically buried in the PC case.

    I really like this enclosure because it's transparent. I got a few older drives lying around and this will make it easier to identify them.

    Got this on amazon today. It is surprisingly hard to take hard drive out of the enclosure. I have to stick something under the drive and pry up a bit in order to take the drive out.

    For those wondering, it DOES pass HDD S.M.A.R.T. data via USB so you can monitor your hard drive health status with Crystal Disk Info or similar tools. TRIM for SSDs may not work though (based on one review I found online) so if you intend to use an SSD in this enclosue a lot, make sure you investigate that in more detail if you don't want your SSD to wear out prematurely in it.

    In addition to bragging rights (LOL), there's a practical benefit of a transparent cradle: If you have a bunch of SSDs (or 2.5" HDDs) and you put all of them in similar enclosures, you can quickly see which enclosure contains which drive, without resorting to sticker labels or (brr!) sharpies.

  • @erickleefeld4883
    @erickleefeld4883 5 років тому

    I've got one of these, for a 2.5" SSD that I already had on hand. It works just fine. If you happen to have a drive like that lying around, then go for this one.
    (If I were starting from scratch, though, I'd get an M.2 module and put THAT into an aluminum enclosure, for some external storage just a little bit larger than a stick of gum.)
    Also: This thing is fine for an SSD, but I can't help but think it wouldn't be substantial enough as a reliable home for a mechanical hard drive.

  • @someguy0523

    Clear plastic tends to be more brittle than other plastics, so might more prone to cracks if dropped I suspect.

  • @PrimiusLovin

    I guess this is it, I was looking for a cheap and external USB 3.0 enclosure that is SATA 6Gbit/s compatible... many claim to be USB3.0 but they only run in SATA 3Gbit/s mode, which could bottleneck the SSD even further!

  • @TingFeng77
    @TingFeng77 4 роки тому +1

    Hey there thanks for the review.
    I got one of these and it appears they changed the PCB over the years, the controller is now a JMicron 578 and some of the capacitors and misc components are in different places
    There is also no longer a Orico logo on the PCB, only 1 on the cover
    Unfortunately I can't bench speeds as I'm using a SATA 2 drive that doenst come close to saturating the chipset

    Thanks for posting this review. I have been looking at this enclosure as an option. So basically, it's a good and reliable fit for an SSD, but probably too flimsy to be used with a mechanical hard drive? (I would be using an old SSD I used to have in a previous laptop.)

Used one of my older cables and it worked for a while and then disconnected itself. ??? I don't know but amazon is sending replacement and I'll see what happens.

    Forgot to mention, I dropped this drive about 1 foot by accident when connecting and the ssd did in fact disengage from the sata connector inside the case. I had to open the case and push it back into the connector. I cut a thin strip of cardboard and laid it inside between the end of the ssd and the end of the case (I think that will prevent that from happening again). However, as in my previous comment, the drive suddenly disconnected and had to unplug the drive and plug it in again to get it to work. Waiting for amazon replacement.

    Tap test is very significant. To save time we simply drop our SSD enclosures from our second story balcony to the offices on the ground floor.
    Frequently we miss and the enclosures hit the concrete (same issue when the ground floor attempts to throw the enclosures up to us). Perhaps we should reconsider our current process of exchanging SSDs but, for now, the tap test is useful.
    ;-)
    Seriously, good vid, useful details.

    • @AAComputersandTechnology
      @AAComputersandTechnology  7 років тому

      well..... That's the coolest idea I have heard all week. Yeah, if you cut a piece of acrylic to size and then drill screw holes in the right places you could probably easily create a transparent cover. The only problem would be that you would have to make it air tight as to prevent any particles from entering the drive and you would need a clean room / box to take the top off the HDD.
