Sliding the whole pcb is actually pretty ingenious. It saves money, space, and against potential wear out of moving components.

I would argue that the PCB isn't sliding, the cover is the one sliding.
@@wta1518 am I spinning on the world or is the world spinning on me
That's definitely how most slider USB drives work. The only way it makes sense LOL
A ribbon cable from the board to the USB tip would work as well. I imagine that it'd be prone to fatigue though.
The most comfortable position for the slider is in the middle. So that would just make it unnecessarily thick, because apart from the PCB, you would also need a pretty sturdy connector between the slider and the USB plug.
Erick Rosa much english. so grammar. wow.
Some USBs have a case that slides instead
Luqman Headley what do you mean? This is the only way as far as I'm concerned, and technically it's the case that slides.
Make a giant circle of curved monitors! Full 360 degree gaming!!
Pixels I don't think it'd make a smooth circle, the curvature of the displays isn't the exact same as of a circle.
Mau dL just takes a lot more
Mau dL it’d probably be like an oval or something
kakyoku how does that make any sense? all of the monitors would have the same curvature, if your result was an oval that would mean you had a handful of monitors with more of a curvature on the left and right sides. same curvature equals circle...

His cat????
Judging by the size of those bites, it's more like a pet cheetah than a cat.
Is there a Type C thumb drive video coming? I've had terrible luck trying to find any decent USB-C thumb drive; they all pretty much suck. I don't think there's a USB C enclosure either, otherwise I'd just use that.
There is some chinese m.2 to type C thumb drives (for about 15$) but i personally never found any information about their quality/speed/reliability.
"Linus cobbles something together" is my favorite series on the channel
I wonder how fast an Intel Optane module would perform in an adapter like this
Oh wow, your actually here 😅
if there is an adapter for usb or thunderbolt to m.2 nvme, it would probably work really well
Yes there is an adapter like that albeit more pricey and inherently limited to 10gbit/s and thunderbolt is way to expensive. My recommendation would be a normal sata adapter which can be had for 10$ and a ssd from the used market( even new ssds can be had for cheap if they are 250gb because people upgrade them outright. So you can make a drive like this for 40-50$ nowaydays with most of the perfomance.
Generalkidd, im glad to see you are a man of culture!
@@juliusgaming9603 good to know, thank you, I actually had no idea a straight adapter existed
If the board was permanently in place then the board would have to be wired to the female USB port to achieve the same slide and bending wires repeatedly results in breaking the wires. So in the end, moving the entire PCB with the USB port was the most sensible thing to do.
Daniel Came here to say this, I don’t know why he was so surprised by that.
That's actually how alot of thumbdrives do it. Sliding everyhing out gives less points of faliure than using a ribbon cable that has to be soldered on both ends and is flexed every time the stick is moved.
I've never seen any other kind of sliding usb drive mechanism. It's weird he thinks it's strange.
Had lite 3 thumb drives (one still active), 2 music players and a wireless stich with that mechanic, although it has become less common over the years it seems. It has one big benefit: no cap that can get lost.
But I would like to see a shorter variant.
+Daniel Thank you for pointing that out. I was going to say the same thing, so I'm glad I looked through the comments first! Yes, it would just be an additional single point of failure that would eventually break. I guess it being a kit you could just solder on some new wires, but why deal with the hassle? ;)
"Ever wished your thumb drive were faster?" everytime I WiSH a thumbdrive, I get scammed.

Having the entire PCB slide to eject the USB connector has the advantage that you have simplicity and strength. You can lay the circuit out in any way you find convenient (e.g., without worrying about having to bypass a sliding piece in the middle of everything) and you don't have to engineer a connector connection that has to survive repeated sliding. Also, the point of failure is at the edge of the PCB and the enclosure, meaning the slide-out connector is much less likely to break. (Downward pressure on the slider is spread across the entire PCB instead of placed on a narrow strip of PCB or PCB-like material which needs support in some way.) In a mass-produced item like this I would consider this an elegant engineering solution. (I know Linus likes fancy stuff, but sometimes the fancy stuff gives you more problems for no practical benefit.)
Exactly. The PCB is going to be much stronger then a solderde on connector
sliding the whole PCB is actually a solid design.
i had one of those mp3 player stick thingies that had a static PCB but also a sliding usb connector that was connected to the PCB via a thin ribbon cable ... guess what gave up after half a year?
or you could just use a plastic cap
I have never seen a USB drive that didn't slide the entire pcb
I haven't either, I think its a better design than having wires moving constantly, you can have a carriage around the pcb and that will take most of the forces from sliding
Yes, the ones that are fixed in position.
Adan Lewis Think of it as sliding the case, not the drive. It's a potential improvement from having a lid/tip/hat on the plug.
1:22 I definitely want to find these m.2 enclosures that allow me to turn a 'regular drive into an SSD' LOL
Hello from 2019! Suggestion for future video:
Given Samsung claims 3.5GB/s read speeds and 2.7GB/s write speeds on their 970 Evo pro, and Thunderbolt 3 claims 5GB/s transfer speeds, an m.2 nvme thunderbolt 3 enclosure would be theoretically unbounded. Thunderbolt 3 also has PCIe passthrough, meaning it essentially hands over the PCIe gen3x4 lanes to the connected device; so conceivably the connected SSD would be just as fast as if it was directly plugged-in to an m.2 port.
My suggestion is revisiting this video’s idea, to test whether an m.2 NVMe Thunderbolt 3 external SSD enclosure really is “the perfect storage device”.
Edit: A suggestion, not a question.
Send an email to storage manufacturers, this is an amazing idea.
@@SoylentGamer This already exists man. $150 for a Thunderbolt 3 NVMe enclosure. Im just waiting for one with USB4 gen 3x2 and PCIe 4.0 NVMe support. That would fully saturate the 40Gb/s USB port, instead of just 32Gb/s a PCIe 3.0 would. Though a 4.0 is capable of 64Gb/s so there's a waste again there lol.
@@JorisKeijser Just get the Gen 3, that's already hella fast
@@SoylentGamer You mean PCIe 3.0? True, I don't even need those insane speeds so I'm just gonna get a USB 3.2 gen 2 enclosure, but it's still a nice concept haha.

"DIY" "build"
DanielRichards644 pretty much.
Fennek_Kaipii This is as much a diy as building a computer is. You buy the parts, you put them together.
If you compare this thing to a full system build including cablemanagement,
then you must have a RaspberryPi with 10 adapters on it and non-soldered only addon solutions...
(even this plug'n'play thing would rather be DIY than this "thumbdrive" or the "SSD" before)
And when someone is able to install windows you call that guy a programmer or technican next? meh...
In that definition putting on a pair of socks is DIY if nobody else does it for you...
Don´t try to compare those efforts with each other... please...
"Don´t try to compare those efforts with each other... please..." what effort? There's no effort in putting together a PC. It's just more expensive legos that can get shocked. Not until you get into custom water cooling does it become effort.

Heh guess I wasn't the only one who looked at old LTT videos lol
I would love to see Linus test a bunch of those DIY quad m.2 raid drives that run on Usb3. The enclosures seem cheap so their performance must be too good to be true
I legit did this a couple years ago and never regretted it. The NVMe m.2 SSD enclosure works around 960mb/s so ultra fast portable storage.
Hi Linus, I bought one of those Silverstone units - had some similar feelings towards it. Something of note for everyone else though, not all M.2 drives are quite the same width. Specifically the Samsung M.2 2280 850 EVO SATA drives - they're perhaps 1 / 1.5mm wider than the 960 EVO's I've got, and that extra touch of width interferes with the sliding mechanics.
8:17
Magetime29 must be so happy to have made it into a LTT video because of his friend request x)
Another potential advantage of the DIY solution: flash drives are not typically designed for very high endurance, generally significantly less than proper SSDs. At the very least, a real SSD will publish it's endurance spec, which flash drives typically dont. So, if you actually intend to re-write the drive frequently, the SSD would probably last quite a bit longer than the flash drive.
I did this a while back making use of my laptops thunderbolt 1 type C port, I haven't regretted it at all.
actually it seems like a really good idea to always move the pcb. this way you don't have cables or other contact points that can wear out over time.
“Turn a normal drive” *picks up ssd* “into a ssd”
Great timing Linus. I literally did this project 2 days ago. Used a 256 GB sandisk out of my carbon X1 that I had upgraded to 1TB, and a wavlink enclosure. I figured the innie connection would be a little more durable and let you move the enclosure where it doesn't limit the maneuverability of a laptop I plug it into.
The particular enclosure you picked, the reviews seems to have trouble with UASP and windows 10, which may explain the lower write speeds vs. the T5.
Thank you for sharing this info with us.

Love videos like this, curious with how technology has evolved if a NVME drive would be able now to be used, perhaps via usb c
Yeah it can. I’ve got a Sabrent enclosure that can use NVME drives over USB-C. It’s also cheap, only like $20 on Amazon
Really like these videos they feel less scripted and not over produced like some other LTT videos
Love this video, love all your videos or tunes and your key hero. Canada Rules!
This would be pretty cool to run a live Unix distro.
There is another good reason to have an M.2 (or motherboard SATA in this case) to USB adaptor that I feel should’ve been mentioned here: If you’re replacing your SSD in your system but you don’t want to reinstall Windows or don’t wanna lose your files (especially true for laptops that only have 1 M.2 drive for storage, like the Razer Stealth) then this adaptor allows you to use drive cloning software to clone your drive into your new SSD for seamless installation.
Nice to see a video with added value ;-)

Yes, they all work that way on the sliding port. The case is the one part that doesn't have any conductors.
However, most use a more secure method of attaching the board than just lying it in there. Really good ones will actually have an inner and outer case, or at least rails between the PCB and the case.

I think that moving the whole pcb is better than have a ribbon cable on the USB connector... the suspect that a sliding mechanism will last alot longer than extending a ribbon cable back and forth.

I absolutely love the performance of my T5. Until nvme usb-c thun(...) externals become commonplace, this will definitely be my workhorse. It's also worth noting that it has hardware encryption, which makes it an ideal place to store my local repos.
