ORICO 2.5" USB 3.0 Toolless SATA Hard Drive Enclosure Unboxing and Review

  • In today's installment I will unbox and take a look at a 2.5" USB 3.0 tooless SATA Hard Drive Enclosure from ORICO (2588US3). I received this product as a review sample but I will still view it as if I purchased it with my own money. This enclosure can be purchased from Amazon for $9.99 (link below).
    Overall I was satisfied with the quality and performance of the enclosure. The case is composed entirely of plastic and it does bend slightly when force is applied to it by the hands. It will protect a drive in the case of a small fall and for its price I think the build quality is good.
    Installing a drive is incredibly easy, I really love the toolless design of the case. Just pop the back panel off, slide a drive in, and you are ready to go in under 30 seconds. Both Windows 7 and Xubuntu 16.04 (Linux) had no problems recognizing the drive.
    For a budget drive enclosure read and write speeds were decent. It's not capable of saturating a USB 3.0 port, read speeds max out at around 220MB/s and my SSD was not able to max out the write speeds.
    The only major problem I have with this case is that the drive can come unseated from the SATA ports if enough force is applied to the enclosure. This is nothing major, especially since it is so easy to reseat the drive, but it is something to note.
    I definitely happy with this drive enclosure it offers good performance and decent quality for a low price.

    I use an Orico 3.5" enclosure for my old 3.5" hard drives. However those require power. I'd probably get a 500gb or 1tb 2.5" drive and an Orico 3.5" enclosure. The quality of these enclosures are awesome. Making your own external HDDs are better than pre-made ones. Cheaper too! Great review.

    I actually had enough time to get a video out today! Unfortunately it was not enough time to take a look at the Dimension P100C like I wanted to. Expect that video early this week!

    I bought this last week for 9.99 too as in impulse buy from an Amazon mail shot. I am glad it was half price. Need to get a new USB cable as the one that came with it is a bit poor. Does its job.

    Thumbs up. Your review is still relevant. Best to have a off switch and an enclosure which does not have that play in it. Thumbs up.

    Lol, I watched your reviews on SATA Cases before I purchased one..
    Mine is from "Aukey", thats funny because the packaging and the USB 3.0 Sata Case is one by one the same, just the logo is from Aukey... it's also funny because they provide drivers which are from Orico :D

    These are selling on sale right now for around $8. Your review is the fourth I viewed and the first that gave a benchmark. That said, in the future please try to use a faster drive to saturate the connection, maybe a Samsung, to know if the connector is truly worthy of the USB 3.0 title. Thank you.

    Hi Aacat, would you recommend this for an 128gb ssd I have lying around?

    • @AAComputersandTechnology
      @AAComputersandTechnology  8 років тому

      +TruckSimz I was great with my SSD, so I would have to say yes! Just keep in mind that this enclosure will not be able to max out a USB 3.0 port and depending on you drive speeds it may not be utilized to its full potential while in the case.

      The first two things I would do is 1 check disk management to see if the drive is reading properly or needs formatting and 2 check device manager to see if the usb enclosure is showing up properly (if you see any unknown devices then you will need to have Microsoft search for the drivers)
