- We spent 3 days deep in Santa Elena Canyon (Big Bend National Park). Its 1,500' walls cascade directly into the river creating an engaging place to explore.

Gatewood, dude!!! This video was SO good! There is no other UA-cam channel I get more excited over by far than your stuff! Keep it up, man! I feel like I go on an adventure just watching. Thanks so much for you hard editing work! Thanks for sharing your experiences and highlighting nature's beauty!
Hey John! Thank you thank you thank you! Very kind, I appreciate it buddy. The goal is to show everyone that it’s possible to do this stuff with a bit of planning. Nothing we do here is that complicated and although times got tough, we pushed through! Had a wonderful experience for sure

I was born and raised out in Alpine, so I grew up going to Big Bend my entire life.
It was something that I took for granted, because it was something we did so often.
Since moving away 8 years ago, I’ve grown more grateful for my old stomping grounds.
Especially when I meet someone new and tell them where I’m from - seeing their face light up with excitement and curiosity.
It was so refreshing to see BB from someone else’s perspective. It was like seeing it with a fresh set of eyes. This is the first video I’ve seen of yours - glad it was Big Bend.
Thank you for the awesome comment Rae! Yes you definitely grew up in a unique part of the country. It’s amazing how you start to appreciate the places we took for granted while growing up. I did the same thing! And still do sometimes haha. Thanks for stopping by!
I live here now and I love it. Great video.
I was born in Alpine (the only hospital) and grew up in Presidio. It is special
The Lower Canyons of the Rio Grande are spectacular! In 1984 I spent a week canoeing the stretch of river between Big Bend and Del Rio. After day one which was mostly flat water , the remainder of the trip was through twisting canyons and incredibly beautiful landscapes. We found several hot springs along the river and soaking in them after a long day's paddle was wonderful. We hiked up several side canyons and one day climbed up Burro Bluff of the Mexican side. Nice to see that nearly 40 years later the river is still wild and clean . At my age now I doubt I'll be able to do that trip again so thanks for the excellent video, it brought back lots of memories!
I need to check out the remaining lower canyons! Santa Elena I’ve heard is one of many beautiful canyons along the border. Hot springs would be a great during winter! The river is wild and clean for sure. Thanks to all who have enjoyed it and kept it that way!
@@GatewoodBrown I'm curious as to how many other people you met while on that stretch of river? When we did our trip in 1984 there were 8 of us in 4 canoes and we only saw four other people during the 6 days we were on the river. We did the trip in mid March and the weather was ideal, low to mid 80's during the day and in the 50's at night.
Found your channel while home sick for two weeks. Watched everything. Love camping. Love kayaking. Haven’t had the chance to combine the two yet. Can’t wait. Thanks for all the info, pointers, how to and cool videos!!!! Started planning trips right away!
Wow thank you for spending so much time watching out adventures! Texas has so much variety and it’s fun to show off. More videos on the way!
I'm sorry, HOW do you only have 30K subs? this is AWESOME content! I have dreamed for years of kayaking the entire length of the major rivers of Texas. I grew up on the Red, canoed the Frio, Guadalupe, and Brazos as a teen... and can't help but dream of running from headwaters to saltwater on some of these amazing rivers.
‘Almost 30k’ haha but man I’ve recently started to think about source to sea trips in Texas. Right now that’s tough except for a few just because of how low everything is. Once the rains come that could be a real concept!
I totally agree, just started wanting to get my first kayak nd the videos are awesome. Really puts me in it. Great job nd definitely subscribed
@@brandonhopewell1988 thank you Brandon! Cheers!
I run Santa Elena 8 times. Once when the river was 6 ft deep. It was after a hurricane. I've even walked up stream to Fern Canyon with my two children. Good times. This was all about 45 years ago.Time flies.
Dang that is some serious water flowing through there! Fern canyon must’ve been gushing too
The Rio Grande forms the US / Mexico border so technically we drifted between two countries the whole time!
You have your passport?
@@franko8572 that is what I was wondering!
@@Dsmiffb 😂🤣😂🤣
Isn't that where the kid who inspired the movie Into the Wild went!?
In the movie there was a 2 yr back log to kayak/canoe the River.
This is quiet honestly, one of the best cinematic youtube video's I've seen in the last couple years. Drone shots, long shots, close shots, POV shots. I'm sure you'll have many subscribers in the coming months and years. Keep living a life of adventure, maybe try a little rock climbing out in the red rocks!
Your comment made my day, thank you! I’m thankful for the channels current size even if it’s fun to grow. Right now I can interact with everyone and I know that can get trickier the bigger a channel gets. I’ll try rock climbing one day! Cheers man!
These videos are so awesome, I’m in Florida and my kayak trips are more relaxed due to the lack of elevation so seeing these videos really get me excited to go out into other states to kayak
Thank you Daniel! Man just go north one state and you’ll find plenty of elevation in Georgia and SC. A little bit further and you’ve got TN and NC!
Florida has got to be the most boring flat shit terrain I say that as someone who lived there for 27 years too long get out of that place and over to the west coast it truly is the best coast. So many free things to do. Florida only has a very limited amount of free fun things to do. There’s more to life than smoking cigars drinking alcohol and getting pregnant by 18 and eating tobacco As the main diet in Florida. My life has been 1000x better since I moved out of that zero opportunity state
I like the bro hug with the ceremonial 3 pat-on-the-back "I'm-not-gay" slap.
Bro hugs are great!
More than three shakes is a wank
More than three back slaps is acknowledgement that we need to invest in some KY
I never thought kayaking could be matched with storytelling so well lol
Every trip is a story! We just try to do our best to convey the trip how it went down. I’m glad it turned out well!
What a great video bro! You’re one of the reasons why i bought myself a kayak and wanted to explore Texas. The thing that is stopping me a little is trip planning and put in and take out points with good parking overnight. Keep the great job man!
Thank you so much my dude! Use Google street view to scope out parking at public road crossings. When you show up you’ll be able to tell where people have been parking. Then just read the signs and you’re good to go! I’ve never had an issue following those principals
We’re glad that we found your channel! Your videos are absolutely amazing! We love the editing, cinematography, and especially the outstanding trip. We sell land near the rivers and we can’t wait to share your UA-cam channel with our clients who are planning to go out for an adventure in the river. Thank you!
Glad to have you onboard! Rivers are like natural gardens (when left wild of course) and I’m so stoked people appreciate the beauty of their ancient nature. Let me know how your clients like the videos!
I love the storytelling, brother. Keep making these kinds of videos. The narration, choice of background music, and everything in between. Keep sharing your story!
Thank you my man! I’d love to make them all the time. Just have to find time for trips and editing!
Nice one. Really cool manage to put all that team on the mission, and much respect for the crew, finally campers that enjoy real coffee and not that instant crap.
Thank you! Yeah the crew staying in high spirits was crucial. At times they definitely had to pick me up too! Real coffee is the only way
4:55 Founder's All-Day IPA. Great choice!
My go to beverage of choice! They got me with the graphic and keep me with the taste
Im so glad i saw your videos!! I love how you show the ups and highs of a trip while being all expecting of the situation. Your humble in your videos but seem so excited to explore life! I love it 🥰 this group of friends seems so fun ☺️
Thank you Patricia! There were plenty of each, high and low points. Definitely looking back there were tons of highs that kept us pushing further into the canyon. We were exhausted though!
Your narration & cinematography is so captivating. Such a peaceful, beautiful and well put together video. And the ending with your friend's introduction really gives off that close friend family relationship sentiment that we all need today. Looking forward to more of your adventures. Love from Trinidad.
Thank you so much AB! Means a lot to see your kind words about the film. I appreciate the positive vibes! Cheers!
I spent 10 days canoeing 92 miles down the river there in the early 70's with an advanced scout group. A trip I will always remember.
Oh wow you all must’ve covered some serious miles! I’d love to do an extended trip out there
You know what, you have youth, good friends and mother nature. You have it all. A memory that will last a lifetime.
We feel really fortunate to have those things for sure. Life isn’t perfect but when you can lean into moments like this trip it makes everything better
Outstanding trip, my friend! Looks like, aside from the wasps, you had an amazing adventure that few get to experience. Thanks for taking us along!
The wasps were a mess! Haha and we certainly tired ourselves out but man oh man was it a great setting. Thanks for watching!
Dude this is some amazing footage. It’s very motivating and makes me want to take trips to explore texas more. I am a new subscriber this is the second video I have watched from you. We were just at the frio like a couple of weeks ago. Water was a little to low for a trip like that yet but soon enough it shall be flowing and I wanna take an adventure like this. Thanks for sharing and keep up the great work.
Thank you! Texas has some cool spots despite the limited public lands. Water is real low all over the US and especially here in Texas. Hopefully rain soon!
My absolute favorite national park. So underrated! Gorgeous views, thank you for doing it justice.
Agreed! Big Bend is such a hidden gem in the national park system. It’s so hard to get too which is part of the alure
lol i love that there was a coffee break in the middle of a canyon
That’s a staple in all of these trips! Also we were so gassed from the effort. Needed a few minutes and some Java! Haha
This video couldn't have been released at a better time. Next weekend we are going on our first kayak camping trip. This will be a first for all of us, and watching these videos last year had me so ready for the nicer weather here in Pennsylvania. Ready to hit the river!
Oh perfect! PA is so epic for kayak camping during summer! All of our stuff is drying up down here so already looking forward to fall haha. Enjoy it man!
Really great film making! We rafted through the canyon WAY BACK in the 80's over Thanksgiving, which I do not recommend. Camping was C-C-C-COLD! The wilderness, combined with the rugged beauty makes this a very special place. I'll never forget it. Thank you for bringing back some wonderful memories.
It can get frigid out there! Fortunately our sleeping bags are pretty good these days but cold nights are long nights! Big bend is special and glad you tuned in
YESSS!!!! KAYAK CAMPING VIDEO!! GOD BLESS THIS SUNDAY!
Haha finally got another one out! Thanks for watching!
That's so cool. I can almost feel the joy and appreciation of this trip. Nailed it!
Yes! So much appreciation and already wanting to get back out to the lower canyons. Just glad we were able to spend this time together. It’s fleeting!
Great video man. What an epic adventure. Cannot wait to go back to explore more of Big Bend. Loved the edit man, such good quality film here. Cheers
Thanks Michael! So much fun getting to experience this place with you. Now you can see why we came back all tired after day 2 lol
What a wonderful video dude. My fiancée and I spent two nights remote camping in the park a few months ago. We finished our time there with a the little hike into the Canyon. We def want to go on a yak trip down the rio. After watching this, its a no brainer. Thanks for sharing your experience and looking forward to more!
Thank you so much! I’d like to camp in the park too but unfortunately we didn’t have time for that. The canyon hike is just a tease. It gets more stunning the deeper you get!
Great videography. Well done. Love the memories of my 10 times up and down that beautiful canyon. My favorite place in the world.
Thank you! Wow 10 times is a blessing. I’d love to go back soon
Love going to Big Bend. People always ask me why I would enjoy going to a desert. Something majestic about it to me. Great vid.
The desert is often a complex clash of many different geologies. It might not have the blatant biodiversity but no doubt it competes with sheer majesty.
I always enjoy your videos, and this one really takes it up a few notches! Your editing and cinematography for this episode is fantastic. I hope to elevate my editing skills to be even half of yours someday. 👏
Thanks for taking us along for the journey! 😉👍--QM
Hey QM! I’m glad you enjoyed it, the time it took to edit stepped up a few notches too! Lol but I really appreciate the kind words. It’s so fun to have a paddling community that watches these edits. For your editing all it takes is time in the seat, you’ll be there in no time!
Great video. As a native Texan now living on the island of kaua'i I appreciate this video even more. Always wanted to visit Big Ben. May need to get back that way and do this trip. If you have a chance kayak the napali coast out here. It's amazing as well. Aloha from kaua'i and keep going. Great content 🤙🏼
Thank you! Kauai looks amazing! I was supposed to honeymoon there but covid cancelled it. Cheers man!
We did from Lajitas to Boquillas on paddleboards (around 100 miles) a few years back. It was one of the most brutal trips we have made to date being that the water was around 15 CFS the entire time. Forced us to drag our SUPs for most of it. We ended up changing the expedition name from Stand On The Rio Grande to The SUP Assisted Hike, lol. Great video by the way, brought back amazing memories!
My dude that is a wild trip! 15 cfs is hiking levels! Sup assisted hike sounds about right haha. Glad we were able to paddle on the way down. Thanks for the kind words my man!
13:01 I want to explore that cave in the background so much!!!
It’s massive! The scale out here is deceiving. Quite the hike up there!
Great video! I had been excited for this one to drop for a while. We did the boomerang in March and were told to put in from the Santa Elena parking/trailhead instead of the boat ramp. You have to cart gear a little ways but it shaves off a little bit of that tough mileage and puts you in the canyon immediately. I did Boquillas Canyon earlier this year too and I’d have to say I enjoyed it even more than Santa Elena. Put it on your bucket list! And let me know if you are ever taking applications for friends for your trips. Lol.
Thank you! Yeah the parking lot would’ve been a huge improvement, we messed that up lol. I want to do boquillas for sure. Heard good things! Haha will do about the trips!
Sitting at the hospital waiting for a hip surgery tomorrow. Just watched this video and it got me so hopeful and excited for what's to come in life. This is exactly the type of adventure I wanna live again! Thanks for documenting it all, you never know where your video might find someone.
Did you need to ask for any permits to be able to kayak down this canyon?
Can't wait for the next one.
Man I hope your surgery goes well! You’ll be back at it in no time. Sending good vibes your way!! Great thing about kayaking is it’s easier on the body than other methods of exploring. We did need permits but it was no trouble at all. Just got them at the ranger station or outfitter
I feel ya! I have a bulging disk and am afraid how it will impact my kayaking.
@@pennygreenler4351 I hope your disc improves and you can get back out there!
Another amazing video Gatewood! What a cool adventure...
Thank you, Ken! You would love it there for sure. Next road trip needs to include Texas!
What an amazing journey!
Yes! We had a brilliant time. Not without its ups and downs though.
FYI, if you don't want wasps attacking you, make a fire
Ya know they didn’t seem to mind the fire unfortunately haha
Campers in Kayaks Getting Coffee
We do love some Java while kayaking and camping!
Outstanding. This was much needed for myself.
Thank you so much Jason!
love the tony anderson in the background! Sold me in the first few seconds!!! Wicked video gents
He makes such good music!!! I’ll absolutely keep using his tunes. So good for showing off a landscape
Wow! What beauty. What a splendid video. Thanks so much for sharing it!
Thank you so much! I appreciate you taking the time to watch it
The grind is always worth the reward! So amazing really awesome footage. Great job with catching the perspective of the paddler and the sheer verticals canyon wall!
That is the truth! Thanks for the kind words bill. It’s hard to show scale when you can’t fit the river and top of the cliff in the frame haha
Amazing trip! Some of the visuals just blew my mind!
That’s the ultimate compliment thank you!
So so beautiful !!! Thanks a lot for sharing !
Thank you for stopping by and watching!
I had been waiting for this one! Really cool vid man! Thank you for sharing!

Great trip! Thanks.
Thanks for watching!
Once again great videos as always! I’m so pumped to go on another river trip
Thank you so much my man! The river is calling and you just go!
This brings back some of my best memories. Worked for an outfitter..whitewater experience..out of Houston, and our trips were to Big Bend. So much fun!!
Oh dang! What a cool experience to guide whitewater. Big bend is stunning! That upriver jaunt everyday would put you in some seriously good shape
What a wonderful video!

This was so fun to watch!
Glad to have you along for the ride!
Great Video! I look forward to seeing what and where you'll go next. Definitely inspired by each one you upload to get out there and explore my own rivers and lakes. Once again, well done!

Thank you for watching! Ya know that’s the goal with these videos is to try and bring the community with us visually and take you through all the highs and lows. You can totally still see the canyon! Very friendly to travelers since the parking lot is right at the canyon mouth
Awesome, Big Bend is one of the best places.
That is the truth! Big bend is magical man. The roads trails and rivers all provide such contrasting views of the park
Congratulations on another great video!! Also the Very best to the New parents!!!! May your child fill your live with love and happiness!!!
Thank you so much! Chris is loving the dad life and will really appreciate your comment!
Mr. Brown-great GREAT VIDEO!! The shots were epic and extremely artful. Nobody can touch your skills for outdoor cinematography. The southwest can offer up its own set of challenges! I was close to Truth or Consequences NM some years back. I was near a bone-dry arroyo on a blistering day when I heard a huge roar and saw dust rising violently on the horizon. I moved away from the arroyo and ravine only to see a wall of water come screaming through, pushing huge tree trunks and rocks with it. It had rained up in the mountains and this was it’s result, hundreds of miles south. It reminded me how dangerous low rivers and dry creeks in the southwest can be. I thought of that as I watched you wonder about the impending storm you might face. I faced a copperhead on my kayak/camp trip this weekend on the walnut. You faced a wasp on your trip and got stung. Never know what awaits one on a trip! Gotta be on the lookout all the damn time! I noticed your buddy Chuck was unusually subdued in the video only to find out that his boss was also in the trip! That explained it! Anyway-again-you and your ever changing crew keep me stoked! 2 guys just joined my crew after buying new kayaks last weekend. I have turned these boys on to your videos. Look for more comments from Kansans in the future! As always, my best to you and your crew! Stay safe!
Hey curt always fun to hear from you! Wow what a crazy story! I’ve watched desert flash floods and they’re pretty nuts. Just walks of water and debris out of nowhere. That’s what we were worried about here and it was strange, the water became extremely milky and very cold which was a stark difference from the previous day. I talked with Chuck about your comment and we both came to the consensus that we were mostly subdued because of how exhausting each day was! So much effort that by the time we were back at camp it was time to sit haha. Anyway great hearing from you!
❤❤ thanks for letting me live vicariously through YOU! God bless
You should visit this place too! A lot of the beauty can be experienced at the parking lot which is cool
Kickass video, amazing scenery! Cheers from Norway! \m/
