In 2013, a group of my friends and I did a 14-mile canoe trip on the Colorado river in Bastrop, TX. We had a very cursory map that led us to a little island about 7 miles in, and we camped overnight. Beautiful and life changing. However, it was 4th of July, and someone was casually doing target practice with semiautomatic weapons as we floated by. We screamed, trying to get their attention, but they kept shooting. We could hear bullets whizzing past us. Freaking horrifying. I was able to get to the edge of the river under an embankment. I grabbed on to some vines in an effort to keep myself under the edge of the river bank. But of course it was poison sumac. Then I had to take 3 weeks off of work. This is the condensed version. 😊 Love the video. Long live Texas

I snorkel in a few spots and have pulled out a lot of gold. I think around 3 ounces total from that river. I use a small snuffer bottle to grab the gold flakes. In the middle and to the north there is a couple dry river beds that feed gold into the main river during rainstorms. So after a big rain is the best time to go. Gold flakes are pretty small but in the clear water they are easily seen.

Beautiful country! The water reminds me of the Nueces River from my youth. I know these sit-on-top kayaks are all the rage, but a proper canoe with some basic paddling skills would get you, and all the gear you need, down river in one piece.
Indeed! The nueces is more clear but the devils has more fun rapids. Probably better scenery too. However I think my overall favorite is the Frio when it’s running

Thank you Zach! Ya know this was one of the few trips I went on that wasn’t planned by myself. in short, you’ll need an outfitter out here and then they’ll kind of take care of the rest. Expensive but worth it! The 106 is a fun one, enjoy! It’ll be a staple for many years to come
Maaaan, that whole section where you got the thumbnail picture from is so ridiculously cool! What an awesome river... but also, lol all these sit-on-top fishing kayaks flipping immediately in the rapids was quite funny. Push your feet into them braces and paddle hard to keep balanced, my dudes! I swear half the shots in this video of the other guys was them NOT in their kayaks, after starting to tip and grabbing onto their kayak in panic hahaha
Yes! We call is the canyon and just so blown away by how it looks. Like....that is real??? so crazy that a river can look like that. So funny but youre right, the dudes spent some serious time off the kayaks lol!
Key tip I learned the hard way many years ago, never try to out paddle the rapids you can not. Simple stick the oar on the side you want to turn and hold that's it. It looked like you guys might have got that down it looked like.
It’s hard not to on a boys trip to the river! Really it takes everyone working together and keeping spirits high. Fortunate to have these dudes on the trip!
Another awesome video, the drone work is particularly noteworthy! Also, I'm glad to see that you wear your pfd even in shallow rivers. You can't control anyone else of course, but it only takes a little water for things to go very wrong! Though I might recommend the guy with the class 1 orange upgrades to something actually safe even if he doesn't plan to use it haha
You'll always find me wearing a PFD! I'd feel naked without one haha. I always recommend it but we are adults so everyone is welcome to do as they please just as you said. Good call on upgrading the class 1 vest!
Another cinematic masterpiece! Your editing never ceases to amaze and give us that experience as if we were actually there. Now, how much of a beating did your yak take at the end of the trip?
We paddled the devils a few years ago in the spring and will be doing it again this November. We bypassed the paddlers camps as well, they weren’t nice at all. Our favorite campsite was at the bottom of three tiers in the left.
If you’re ever up near Ottawa Canada I’d be happy to take you white water kayaking. It’s a nice 5/6 hour day and we usually get a group of 10-20 depending on the weekend. Would highly suggest “May two four” or Canada Day holiday weekends for maximum experience
Floating the Buffalo in May but this river looks like so much fun and it's beautiful. Great video and me and my Old Town will hopefully get there one day.

This video makes me glad my 2nd kayak is a sit on but still sits low , don't think I would do well with the raised seats . I think on the Devils River I would spend about 50% in the boat and 50% in the water lol . Awesome video as always , , , I would still like to give the DR a try . You have a blessed one .
Haha very true Spencer. Sit on tops have completely captivated me because of their ability to bilge water automatically. Makes wave trains and capsizes way easier to fix!

Another great episode! You guys might want to look into tenkara fishing rods. They collapse into storage tubes and are perfect for these types of adventures. I just hate to see good fishing rods getting destroyed lol.
Thank you Ryan! Yeah I picked up a 5’6” rod after this so that I can properly store it during rapid sections. Now we will know which areas to be weary!

Thank you for watching it all! Happy that you were able to enjoy the trip through our lens. Such a special place!
Man what an epic paddle. Would love to get on that river! Great video and awesome to see the gear get that real world love!!
Epic indeed! You have to do it man. So up your alley! Plus tons of fish to target
Awesome video and thank you for highlighting the devils river. It’s one of my favorite places in the state.
Do you hv any recommendations on primitive camping riverside where you can also swim? Native Texan here and amazed I didn’t already know of this spectacular place!!! Thanks 😊
@@michaeldomec5275 there’s tons of primitive and rv camping at the park. There also making another Devils River State Park called the Dan Allen Hugh Unit. That’s opening soon and has easier swimming access.
@@MrSTravelQuest excellent thank you 😊
Beautiful country!
Dude I really enjoy those smaller fun rapids that help break up a canoe trip. Just learning so I work with in my limits.
Totally agree! They’re a great addition to the long pools. I much prefer rapids to flatwater paddling haha
Mr Brown-what a hell of a trip! That river throws some of everything at you! AWESOME scenery and gorgeous water! You usual filming expertise in on point! Thanks for taking us on this awesome journey. Noticed some new items in your Remote Designs line-I’m going to go on line and check it all out.
Thanks again for shredding it!
All the best-
Curt
Thank you for always watching curt! I’m just now starting to catch up with comments so apologies on that! This devils river is pretty special man. Hope you’ve been well!
Wow that river look real deep!.on picture I don't see the bottom of the river. That's a amazing adventure!...be safe...🙃👍🤩🐻🐼😎😎
Amazing footage. As always. Thanks for sharing !!
Thank you rob! Thank you as always for watching!
00:20 Wow.. amazing drone shot! Love the color of the water juxtaposed against the Texas desert!
The drone really does that scenery justice. Incredible place!
@@GatewoodBrown After watching your videos, I hope to one day be able to kayak some of these rivers!
I'll be in Houston for a weekend coming up--any good rivers within 2 hours you recommend? (Preferably rent + shuttle service)
@@OptingForTheOutdoors welcome to town! Yeah check out the Guadalupe river in new Braunfels. 2.5hrs but it’s hill country and lots of shuttles plus rentals. Definitely the spot to go!
@@GatewoodBrown Awesome, thanks! I'll be in Katy, so that's not bad at all! I was thinking I'd have to settle for the Colorado river out of Columbus on the 10
That looked amazing GB. What a blast.
Thank you CCC! It was a blast and definitely a spot we want to return to
Another amazing trip Gateway. I’ve been following you for a couple years now and enjoy every video you put out. Great content brother!!!!
That old town is damn near un-tippable! Spectacular video!
That’s what it felt like! Made me wonder if having a stable platform like the old town is better than something that has better paddling but worse stability. This 106 felt planted in those rapids!
@@GatewoodBrown I'm considering taking my 120 pdl out on the Missouri River. Seeing how stable yours is in rapids makes me feel better about taking on the mighty mo
@@SeasonalObsession I’m unfamiliar with the Mo but can definitely attest to the stability of old towns 120 and 106! I got lucky with a few good lines through rapids too
love your content, Gatewood. Amazing to see the wild side of Texas.
I appreciate you watching the videos!
Another epic trip and edit GB. Keep ‘em coming.
Dude thanks Caleb! Good to hear from ya again. It’s been a minute! Hope you’ve had a good summer
Absolutely beautiful! Thanks for the views of paradise!
Thank you for tuning in!
I live vicariously through you guys on this trip❤
Thank you so much for the kind words! Sometimes I live vicariously through the old videos lol
I can't get over the crystal clear water!!!!!
It really is incredible!!
Dude... your videos just keep getting more and more epic....!!!!!
Haha thanks isaac! Trying to improve with each one. Not that it’s necessary but I do enjoy trying to tell the story in a more accurate manner with each edit. Takes more time but I like it
Bro, your editing skills are legit. Love your story telling. Filmed some b roll there 3 yrs ago for a documentary I was working on. Love the place! Glad you did this.
This video was a masterclass piece. Enjoyed it thoroughly.
That’s so kind, thank you!!
Amazing video as always! Great story telling and incredibly well produced footage. Would love to hear about some of the planning behind this one! I know the Devil’s river requires excellent preparation. Def a bucket list spot.
Just picked up a sportsman 106 second hand. Cool to see it perform in such a technical spot. Excited to get it out for an overnight trip soon.
Keep up the great work, bro!!
Thank you Zach! Ya know this was one of the few trips I went on that wasn’t planned by myself. in short, you’ll need an outfitter out here and then they’ll kind of take care of the rest. Expensive but worth it! The 106 is a fun one, enjoy! It’ll be a staple for many years to come
Such a sick trip! You captured it perfectly 🔥
Thanks my dude!
This looks so fun, I have to try it immediately!
Get out there ASAP!
Stumbled upon this and loved every minute!
Thanks Ethan! Means a lot my man!
Gatewood does it again, making me think i need to go on a kayakin adventure
Thanks my Dude! I’m thinking another Jurassic kayak adventure is definitely in order. Always love watching your edits!
Just watched on my big screen. Amazing job telling the story. Love what you do! 👏
Thank you Dan! Doing our best to show the reality of kayak camping trips. Mostly great but never without tribulations.
you guys have so much fun. i love it.
It’s hard not to on a boys trip to the river! Really it takes everyone working together and keeping spirits high. Fortunate to have these dudes on the trip!
How I wish i could manage such a trip!
❤ Love your videos!
You can! Go with a good group and you’ll be in good hands
Nothing like cracking a huge mango white claw after a day of hard work on the river. Cheers!
I started yaking in Texas over 30 years ago I never did that one looks cool actually the portage looked awesome super pretty river nice vid
Its a great place to spend the weekend for sure!
Thank you! And apologies for the late reply. Ya know we had enough water to where this one wasn’t too hard on the kayaks. Just the bodies! Haha
Why are your videos so entertaining? They just rock
That’s the best comment thank you! Made my day for real
Canada has some big water that is for sure! Y'all I think are the paddling capital of NA. Well deserved!
i want to go there so bad. glad to see your content again
You should my man! You’d really enjoy it
Floating the Buffalo in May but this river looks like so much fun and it's beautiful.
Great video and me and my Old Town will hopefully get there one day.
I may do the Buffalo in April since Texas is dry right now!
Amazing place! Awesome vid! Hopefully you'll get to some more before summer is up!
Thank you so much! We’ve been busy kayaking but editing takes awhile so lord trips inbound soon! Trying to get one uploaded tomorrow
Man, I think that’s your best video yet! Just picked up a Vibe Sea Ghost 130. Looking forward to getting it into some rapids soon. We just need some rain here in Texas!
Thank you Joe! Means a lot to hear that and I kind of agree. Had a lot of material to use for this video and felt like it all came together in the edit. Really big shoutout to the guys on the trip being cool with me shoving a camera in their face haha.
Ran the Devil's in May of this year, the water was a foot and a half lower than shown in your video. It was a beautiful 4 day 3 night excursion that after years is finally off my to do list.
Duuuude!!! What an epic trip! I swear you were going to wipe out just before the canyon! Great stuff brother!
Epic indeed! I thought I was too man. That was one of the closer calls!
@@GatewoodBrown I wiped out for the first time ever in Port A a couple weeks ago. Surf kayaking got me lol
I've never tried surf kayaking but I can imagine with that much force you could get tossed around pretty quick! Sand isn't as soft as you think either haha @@WildLifeOutdoorsPodcast
@@GatewoodBrown you gotta try it some time just for the experience! And you’re not lying there it compacts quick
I have been to Dolan Falls, great place to sight see and jump off of. The coffee looks like one of the best parts. Good video on a cool river.
Coffee by Dolan falls would certainly be an elite way to start the day. You’ll have to give it a go next time you’re out there!
Wow man, you make exceptional content 👏. What a beautiful but rapid full river.
Thanks man! Just trying to show the world that Texas outdoors are up there with the best!
What a trip , that was fantastic . You guys had a real experience and a lot more rapids than I would of thought . This video
makes me glad my 2nd kayak is a sit on but still sits low , don't think I would do well with the raised seats . I think on the
Devils River I would spend about 50% in the boat and 50% in the water lol . Awesome video as always , , , I would still like to
give the DR a try . You have a blessed one .
Haha very true Spencer. Sit on tops have completely captivated me because of their ability to bilge water automatically. Makes wave trains and capsizes way easier to fix!
One day I'll get there! Great video Gatewood!
Thank you!! Stoked you got a look at what Texas has to offer! We need to be on your next tour haha
Happy to see you back at it!
Back in action! Ready to bring the heat with subsequent videos too. This one took a ton of time but I didn't want to rush anything and compromise the story. Really tried to do it justice.
Amazing trip right there! Wow. 😍
Cheers and thank you! One of these days I will do a proper car camping trip. We've tried in the past but none as cool as yours!
Great vid guys!
Thanks my man! Need a fly rod next time haha
They say that the Top Gear film crew watches Gatewood Brown's videos for tips. All we know is...Gatewood rocks!
Haha this is such an excellent comment. Made my day! Been watching top gear forever so I wouldn’t be surprised if there was some influence somewhere in my editing that I’m not conscious of. Rad lads!
@@GatewoodBrown if that's the case, it shows buddy! Love the time-lapse too. Never seen Top Gear use that. Yet.
good stuff, great editing. What style boat would be best for that float?
Thank you! A 12' sit on top kayak would be best. Check out the Crescent LiteTackle II or the Crescent Ck2. Both are great options
Bro the broken poles made me laugh and cry…1st timers on the devils river my buddy had all his poles in the holders on the back of his bonified yak went under a low hanging branch…6hrs into the trip and SNAP!!! Broke every single one haha so yeah no fishing that trip…we loved the devils river definitely gained a new subscriber with me love the vids and editing!! God bless stay dry broski👍🏼
Gatewood does the Devil’s. Quality content.
The devils was calling my name! Finally made it out there
Awesome video my man! Killed this edit!
Thank you SF! Always appreciate you watching them
Damn the channel has blown up and rightfully so. I've been here since first 1k subs the quality of these vids are some of the best
Dude you’re a legend! So rad that you’ve been here since 1k (which was a huge deal when that happened). Pretty wild this many people tune in for videos but it’s been so cool to have all these interactions over the years. I appreciate the kind words and you sticking by me all these years!
Beautiful video brother!!! You’re making me want to go to Texas and try to do that. Not sure I could handle it though.👊🏼
Haha you totally got this! Not much overlanding to be done but wait til summer is over. It's a scorcher!
We were just there in July. We have a Ranch west of Rocksprings, so we are close to the Devil's River. Beautiful doesn't quite do it justice!
Well done! Enjoyed the vicarious journey
That's some beautiful country!
It's incredible out there! And seemingly out of nowhere too which is cool.
Great vid the devil's is def a bucket list spot
Bucket list for sure! I’d love to go annually but it’s a big undertaking
OMG, WHAT BEAUTIFUL CLEAR WATER.
It was amazing!
Another amazing video! I wish I could do that stuff.
Thank you so much cliff!
