To be fair, I'd wait with saying that they returned to status quo untill the next episode because for now, we do not have concrete evidence that this is the case. Yes morty lost half of his original self. But what *exacly* does that entail is not clear. We literally only heard him speak *1 line* of dialogue after he left the game. If next week, they regress him, I will gladly admit i was wrong, but for now I will not cast my judgement.

Possible dumb hope, Morty is basically made to fully trust Rick but it turns out Rick had ended up actually relying on a more independent Morty without realizing, leading to him constantly digging himself into a bigger hole throughout the episode ending with him barley making it back to the machine where the Morty offspring left with Marta repopulated to numbers large enough to actually bring back our proper Morty with Rick needing to accept that he needs Morty to our Morty and not to one percent of him after he had years to contemplate in the game.

Your review even sounds like you’re praising the episode and just upset that it didn’t go exactly where you wanted it to go. I think its another brilliant exploration of Rick and Morty’s relationship. They worked well within the limitations of a 30 min episode. I think if this was in season 1 and you had never seen the show you’d think this was top tier. At this point I feel like Rick and Morty is a victim of its own success.

Because he doesn't CARE. Because nobody's special to him Summer!" It's really interesting that Morty still kind of clings to Rick in a way, because this quote alone, along with SEVERAL actions (like shooting Rick) show that Morty HAS no illusions. He knows where he stands in the grand scheme of things. Evil Morty going "there you go kid." after Morty asked what made Rick come back, is what planted the seeds of doubt.
MatPat made this theory YEARS ago, that it would be Evil Morty who would kind of instill that sense of fear and distrust in OUR Morty causing him to question Rick. We've seen what happens when Morty OUTSMARTS RICK. Rick has seen what happens when a Morty is smarter than Rick.If you think he's going to WILLINGLY let OUR Morty be anything like Evil Morty.....oh you haven't been paying attention. And THAT alone, is what's gonna bite Rick in the ass.

I think what they were going for is that even Marta trusts Rick in the end even though she doesn’t want to give up her individual identity, and Rick pays to keep her game running because he doesn’t want to completely control Morty anymore, and now respects the parts of him that rebel. I agree with you that they will return to the status quo because Morty still has other rebellious parts of himself, such as Marta’s daughter, and Rick has to tell all of Morty that he loves him for real, no irony.

Unsatisfying? This episode was fantastic. Marta gained more and more of Morty’s development/independence because of her dynamic with Roy/Rick and she’s going to be arc’d out later in the season when they come back to Blitz and Chitz to reunite her with Morty. Hence the multi-layered joke about the catalog system in the post credits scene. I dunno, man. I think you’re way off on your review of this one. They weren’t “scrambling” at the end, they were putting together a series of ideas that basically struggled with the concept they all mattered because they were Morty but spiraled because Rick/Roy wouldn’t acknowledge Morty had value (mattered). Side note, the Die Hard joke was funny because of its overuse. Summer literally said, “Call me diehard.” Come on, how do you not get that? It was a one liner they turned into an entire B-story and the fact they did it successfully speaks even further to the greatness of this episode.
TLDR: Die hard. Die hard, cause die hard. Die hard!! Walkie-Talkie Die Hard Mother Fucker. . . I was trying to be funny but she seriously says this. The bad guy character questions her knowledge of the movie and she replies with, “WALKIE-TALKIE DIE HARD, MOTHERFUCKER” . . honestly the fact you strung together clips of them saying Die Hard over and over again, as if it wasn’t intentionally overplayed, only confirmed (for me at least) your misconception of the episode. What do I know though? I’m just an aging and balding 35 year old with a love for cartoons. None of this real anyway. We’re critiquing shows inside a simulation at this point. . . I don’t remember where I was going with this. Die hard.

Everything else you said in this video, though, put into words the weird off-ness of the story that I felt while watching it. The ending was a little weird but the general premise is honestly really entertaining. Eh, if they regress Morty though it’s just another layer of disappointment in the show’s disappointment lasagna. The show never wants to commit to either of the two things it’s good at, (and unlike a few other objectively much worse shows, it doesn’t even seem like it does this out of anything more than spite.)
It is a good show when it wants to be. But it desperately wants to have its cake and eat it too while bitching about how much it hates cake.
We don’t need to have dramatic serious episodes ever again. They’re my favorite and I love them, but the show doesn’t need those. The show needs to not undermine its own characters and allow them to keep whatever growth and change they’ve earned, and it needs to not mock the viewers for liking the way the characters grew.
Like, my complaining might be for naught. We have no clue how this episode will affect Morty going forward. But I really don’t want to go back to stupid, subservient Morty. I liked the Morty that was fixing Rick’s drunken mistakes and begrudgingly defusing a bomb because he was used to this shit.

Tbh the show needs to pick one: serious epic character developing wromps or episodic adventures.
It’s nauseating and frustrating, especially given the theme of nihilism, of bouncing from questioning if rick is perfect and calling his character into question, only to have everyone go back to the show agreeing everything is pointless and Rick is god without any plot progression.
I guess the show feels like rick itself: going far lengths to show us a glimpse of hope for story only to undo it all to show us how pointless everything is

There likely wasn't enough time to explore the video game world and look at the things that would logically pop up with wide spread religion, such as different sects. The NPCs are all different aspects of Morty's mind and I assume there are natural redundancies, so the ones who come from the same part of his mind would naturally group up together over time.

Probably unpopular opinion but I’ve completely given up on Rick and Morty.
I feel like the writers don’t know where their going, and if this was just a fun sci fi space adventure every week with a little bit of lore it would be okay; kind of what futurama did.
Maybe this wasn't the original plan but I feel like show runners “advertised” an over arching story in order to get more viewers taking advantage of the fact that many people want to see more story lines in more animated series.
It might not have been the plan but I felt like the show kind of admitting or revealing this was a little to late, and they do it in a back handed way- like when Rick revealed his backstory; saying maybe people will finally shut up about it.
If this wasn’t their intention I can understand being frustrated with viewers demanding some story lines be told or it being the only reason it’s watched, but personally don’t put something in the plot you don’t plan on telling until five or seven years later and only doing so because of complaints.
To me Rick and morty isn’t a sci fi adventure, it’s a science fiction rom com, and I wish I was told this before I became invested.
It’s feels like SVTFOE in which it was started as a magical girl parody series only to hint at bigger things and made many viewers believe it was going to become a mystery adventure series only to be squashed because it was a shipping/ romance show and would rather focus on that. And the over arching possible plot line also got many new viewers and former viewers invested.

I disagree with you the episode was AWESOME the Die Hard being a universal space mono myth is the type of mixture humor high low and pop culture reference that I adore in Rick and Morty we need to wait for episode 3 and others to know how much of Morty character development and brain power was killed in Roy. Morty is a kid, a teen he still LOVE Rick & wants validation from Rick it's just evolution that's why many kids/adults love toxic parents or partners.

I mean, he basically found out that his entire existence in any universe is to serve under Rick. Not only that, but he finds out HIS Rick abandoned him and his family, the Rick he knows now only came around because he wanted to wait for the original Rick to return. Not only that, but his entire original Dimension is completely fucked, he found out his mom and sister are dead, his father is the last survivour, and this could have all been fixed by Rick.
And he knows that the only way to be free from Rick would be to do something as grand as what Evil Morty did, which is to put A HOLE IN INFINITY.
So yeah, I believe when he finally got a chance to be freed from Rick and Rick couldn't force him to go with him, he wanted to stay.

The Die Hard subplot isn't just a spoof of a movie you didn't see. It's also riffing on the endless iterations of spoofs, remakes, rip-offs, and stories inspired by said movie. While being aware that a huge part of the audience probably never saw the original and saying that it doesn't matter. Which is pretty awesome, actually. In the end Summer knows what to do even though she never saw the movie and defeats the villains who were way too obsessed superfans of the movie. So it's also an iteration on a common theme in Rick and Morty: people becoming too obsessed with canon and minutiae who spoil their own fun as well as that of others and turn into complete losers. Classic Summer plot.
