If I'm being honest I think Rick was bluffing. We KNOW he actually loves Morty despite his inability to admit he loves everyone. Actions speak louder that words and regardless of what Rick says he still saves what would be less than 1% of Morty. If he actually didn't care why bother? It's not like that 8% was 8 individual Morty people it's was at least a few countries. Making Marta literally less than 1% of Morty. And let's not forget Marta didn't start off as defiant if anything she starts off the episode as one of the most complicit and obedient. That's why Rick picks her she's easy to work with. This says to me ALL of Morty is able to overcome his blind faith and dependability on Rick. If anything President Morty that sounded a lot like Evil Morty (who was also president Morty funny enough) was the defiance Morty already had for Rick. Edit: and as far as Morty RIGHT after he gets out of Roy I think this is just that shock of getting all back into one after several lifetimes getting smashed in. We saw how he was right after his first run of Roy Rick on the other hand is familiar with the game and can bounce right back pretty quick plus he had the added bonus of not being the entier population of a planet
I think you're missing the biggest point in the episode: Marta was who Rick was trying the hardest to bring out. Who Rick enabled to lead. And who ultimately let stay in the machine because she wanted to, and Rick enabled her to. Rick wanted Marta's aspect of Morty so much that Rick let Morty's world/personality destroy so much of itself just to wait for Marta. Marta's also the only one that Rick says he loves and respects. This wasn't a story about Rick not loving and respect Morty, it was the level of effort and work Rick would do to keep Morty as his own person and individuality. Even when ultimately, he couldn't.
Wouldn't Marta die a few minutes after Rick left the game anyway because of time dilation? She was already pretty old and every second outside the Roy game is a month inside.
@@ryanhunter4854 Yeah, they were playing pretty fast and loose with the time dilation. To go full tin-foil hat nerd, maybe it's because Morty's personality lives through Marta's descendants? I kind of agree with the theory that Rick is going to go back and download Marta in a later episode, after she's lived however long a life she has and Rick get's annoyed with the Season 1 Morty submissiveness.
@@sexkrazedpanda That might be what they're planning... or planning a sort of "spin-off season" where you got young Rick from the Spotless Mind episode and mature Morty?
One thing I think everyone is missing when they talk about this regression is something Johnny touched on at the end. Rick intentionally preserved the Marta piece of Morty. I think this is undervalued as a display of caring for his whole grandson and I'm also inclined to believe the pieces of Marta might return to Morty one day. Heck, it may even be that Rick figures out the old "agree to everything" Morty annoys him or isn't as fulfilling a relationship. It would be really cool to see Rick admit that the part of Morty that doesn't bend to his wishes is a part that he (Rick) needs around. Finally, I think there's even evidence of this previously: when Morty detoxifies he's much more capable and confident, and Jessica openly tells Morty that Rick was lamenting his absence. Rick needs Morty on more than one level and I think this is just a slow burn to him realizing it.
I thought so too. But then upon watching the episode again, Marta says she will give the go ahead on one condition. Then we cut to the morty fragments boarding the space ships then conclude with Blipz & Chitz workers pushing the preserved Roy video game. I'm guessing keeping Marta alive in the simulation was Morty Prime's (Marta's) choice not Rick's. Rick obliged out of his love for Morty
@@wolfie819 That's an interesting point. I guess the only thing I would say is that once Rick was out of the game and Morty had (mostly) returned, Rick could have double crossed Marta. I don't think you're wrong or anything, I just prefer to hold out hope that the better parts of Rick are the ones that will eventually win out.
@@bradthunderpants3283 PFFFFT TRUE. But at the same time Rick was self conscious the whole time and morty wasn't. Then again Rick has probably played roy several times so 50 years is probably nothing for him.
actually, that has some very specific implications... that there are guaranteed certainties within the game world... Roy will always wake up in a childhood night terror... Roy will always be offered a job at the carpet store... ROY WILL ALWAYS GET CANCER. ...Rick had to actually GET AND SURVIVE CANCER at some point... all things that Rick would have known were going to happen.
Yeah I don't think Marta staying in the game was meant to be the writers "getting rid of" Morty's defiance. I mean, she's only one five billionth of him, and a tiny fraction of that "8%". I think it was meant to reflect on Rick's character more than anything. How he grew to value something despite it's insignificance. Marta was the one "part" of Morty that was the most defiant of Rick. She's like what Evil Morty was to the citadel. And Rick lets her live her own life, which is a surprisingly emotionally nuanced decision for him to make.
Something I really liked was seeing the moments where Summer is at her most confident, coupled with the last episode. Where she wants to be independent and impress those who she think are cool (Rick, Space Beth), but flails & drops the mask a bit when she's on her own, and becomes confident again when she feels like she has an upper hand (others are playing too by the book) or has someone to show off against. As someone who hasn't seen Die Hard, the B-plot didn't feel like a standard R&M parody to me, being more about that dynamic of 'Summer can stand out where others play by rigid & defined expectations', which landed super well for me! It's a moment where everything being meta helped define each character's method+worldview, rather than just being references to or critique of some other piece of media.
Remember that when rick and morty purged their toxic traits it was shown toxic rick was upset about toxic morty being harmed by real rick, basically outright saying rick considers his love for morty toxic.
I never really considered the fact that our rick doesn't have a biological morty since his Beth died as a kid and never had the chance to have him :/ and on the other hand, the morty he is going around with is the direct biological grandson of the rick that killed his wife and kid 😬 but I guess it's nice that they're together, since neither would have had the other if they had gone on with their lives normally. I hope that our Rick sees that without the Marta part of Morty their dynamic is kinda messed up, and he sorta misses it. And maybe he goes back to try and reconcile with that part of Morty.
I think what's going on in the writers want to have it both ways in that they want to realize both 'morty stuck with reformed rick' and 'morty realized without rick'. Like with Beth and Space Beth. It's another bifurcation of storytelling potentialities. Yeah I used Bifurcation in a sentence deal with it. Season 6 feels like they are embracing multiple potentials from one person in a different way with the characters.
@@lyricbot8513 me, who has never seen severance: what? lol. I do know the basics of the plot so tho i guess I kinda do. Of course. I may be talking to a bot here.
I never thought about Space Beth being a result of the writers wanting to have it both ways with Beth's character, but it makes sense. You want these characters to grow and change, but remain recognizable.
@@matti.8465 yeeeeeep. I wouldn't call it a cop out either. They just realized they can have their cake and eat it too with the lore they set up. Remember when Rick said "I just thought it was cool if I had a space daughter", pretty much Harmon saying that he wanted it both ways.
I don't think that marta staying in the simulation will impact morty's personality at all. I think that fundamentally all of the MPCs (morty player characters) are morty. The traits we see in marta are also in all of the other MPCs, but for one reason or another they didn't manifest. The differences in the mental states and therefore the differences in behavior of the MPCs are a result of the game's code and the game's environment. For instance, the game encoded the existence of a jewish family, and the game programmed marta to believe she was jewish initially (but it could only use morty's knowledge of Judaism to actually create a jewish family). Additionally, the MPCs would be affected by their environment to change their behavior just literally everyone is. Again, the point is that this charismatic, empowered bit of morty's mind called marta being left in the game doesn't make morty any less charismatic or empowered because all of the MPCs had the same mind. It's just that marta's charisma and leadership was able to manifest because of a combination of encoded beliefs and environmental factors. The idea that all of these mind are the same mind makes all of the conflict between the MPCs trivial, because it's nonsensical to distrust someone who is the same person as you. This, in my opinion, points to the theme that all people IRL are fundamentally the same (because we all like people and all hate suffering) and our distrust of other people's differences is likewise trivial.
also keeping a piece of morty in that game kind of makes him immortal, i hope. this assumes marta's mind gets recycled endlessly. Hopefully she forgets that she's a fourteen year old boy because that sounds like torture.
@@jonathanbennett3691 think it did reset the stage so to speak, meaning that anger and resentment that Morty has had up to this point is lessened, but at the same time so is his confidence, they're not gone but, rather are not as core as they were before, he still has his memories, skills, and even to a degree his evil counterpart's traits, but now he has the experiences of countless lives(okay billions, but still an incomprehensible amount of growth) which will likely be more beneficial than what he lost.
Great take! I thought at first the writers were saying each mpc was a tiny fraction of who morty is, but it would be silly to say that 1 piece (Marta) of 5,000,000,000 pieces of Morty would contain all of his free thinking, confidence, and rebelliousness. I hope they don't go forward as if he's suddenly lost those qualities.
Before watching, my theory is that this episode was a background story for evil morty. There's a ton of resentment for Rick, all three of the characters seem closer to their earlier seasons' traits than the recent ones, Morty's personality has been partially erased because of Rick's inability to be vulnerable (leaving the door open for major hatred for all Ricks), it had no ties to the Season 6 opener
In my opinion Season 6 feels like a return to the glory days of seasons 1,2,and 3. The first two episodes have been fantastic and have me hooked on the show again :)
I don’t think that Marta being removed from Morty will effect him long term. I do think it’ll effect him pretty heavily in the short term. Morty is a person who has proven time and time again that he’s capable of growth, and I think that part of Morty is inevitable, he might just need a bit more time to get there than he would’ve before.
This reminds me about that one episode of Jimmy neutron where Jimmy and Cindy switch minds. They emptied their minds and relied on their friends to put everything back in the right person, and at the very end there was one part that was thrown out. Which did end up effecting Jimmy.
it's interesting (and also kinda fucked up) that rick essentially lobotomized morty in this episode, but also didn't really have a choice. he obviously left marta behind, but also keep in mind that literally every other aspect of morty's personality was convinced to go with rick by marta. however she convinced them, either by threatening that they are ultimately insignificant if they don't go with rick, or by playing up how great rick is/how good morty's relationship with him is, or however the fuck she did it, she is ultimately implementing the same idea into every aspect of morty's personality: rick can be trusted, and whatever he says is correct. this means that EVERY aspect of morty now fully trusts rick and basically idolize him since he had an almost godlike presence in their roy lives (rick says it's not a religion, but they obviously all see it that way). any capacity for critical thought against rick has now been completely terminated. what's worse, rick basically had no choice in doing this since convincing them to come with him was really the only viable way for the roy mortys to rejoin morty's personality. hence the whole "we don't have 5 billion chloroform rags" bit. all aspects of morty were essentially brainwashed into submission and devotion, and any that weren't (i.e. marta) stayed behind. it's like how every rick on the citadel either abandoned their beth or had their beth die, because any rick who had a living family he cared about wouldn't have discovered interdimensional travel. hence why there are seemingly no dianes on the citadel. it's also worth noting that this isn't really a "reset" of morty's development. even s1 morty didn't completely trust and often disliked or even went against rick (not killing morty jr, insisting on continuing the adventure, asking for the love potion and demanding he fix the results, demanding he be treated better after learning about the brainwave thing, etc.) but new morty seems incapable of any of that. he isn't really shy or nervous like s1 morty either, he seems like a rick-obeying robot. idk where exactly the story goes from here, but i don't think the writers are just going to drop any of this. marta is certainly coming back at some point, and total lobotomy/conversion therapy combos (done on a SYNAPTICAL LEVEL!) aren't easily undone. i'd be willing to bet that this pisses off the family as well. maybe rick prime uses marta to try and turn morty against rick c137? who knows.
This was one of those episodes that almost felt meta in an unintentional way. I got the impression the writers were forced to tone back Morty's development, and this is the in-universe explanation they settled on. I don't dislike it, but it felt especially dark in a way I keep forgetting the show is capable of. It also might be a stretch, but I've seen people pointing out there was a reference to Raiders of The Lost Ark in this episode, and getting at the idea that this is essentially Morty's "lost arc" in the sense that it's being shelved for now.
@@ListlessLion i also get the feeling that they had to reverse some of morty's development, but i do think it's necessary. mory's arc felt way too rushed, what the hell could they have done with his character for the next 5 seasons? plus, his development kind of erased his most iconic traits (nervousness, moral compass, stuff like that) and didn't replace them with anything. who is season 1/2 morty? easy, he's a nervous, awkward boy who gets bossed around by rick. under all the acne and stuttering, however, he has a strict moral compass and is willing to go against rick if he feels it's right. who is season 4/5 morty? uh, he's kind of awkward. sometimes. sometimes he just acts normal though. he goes along with what rick says, unless... well sometimes he just doesn't, and there's not really a clear reason why. he's totally fine with killing innocents, though. he's just kind of... nothing? his character is really inconsistent. the only identifiable arc he has is the corruption of his ethics, which might be interesting if the show could bother to explore it beyond 2 second throwaway gags. idk, i don't think new lobotomy morty is a bad thing. it's better to just admit you were wrong then just let one of your main characters remain completely static for half the show.
I feel this segment of Morty is a big part of his identity as "The One True Morty" or "Morty Prime", Perhaps the device still running will have future implications.
i wonder what happened to the parts of morty that died? did they effectively disappear did they reincarnate as the children? or did they gather up with other people
Wouldn't they still be stored somewhere in the machine if the game didn't restart? Like how a computer can't always delete files entirely or how they sometimes save some data to a temporary folder
The fact of a matter is that Morty lost quite a bit of himself when the war broke out he must’ve lost lots of parts of him I wonder how he’ll go living forwards
I think this was a way to regress Morty back to that first season version of morty but will make an appearance in another episode. But they could also show how that effects him as well as the creators because they're stuck in this middle ground between being themselves and living up to the expectations of another entity being Rick and the audience who has been begging and pestering for "classic Rick and Morty" whatever that means to them even tho what brought them together was their own natural attraction to each other
Just finished my first watch of this episode as I didn't have chance to watch it earlier but I really love this season so far. It seems familiar but different and fresh at the same time.
I really hope they don't ruin Morty character development, Martha was his defiance and passion, sure, a 1/5Billiont piece but she definitely felt more important, she was able to course all other parts of Morty, she definitely is important. Along with the president they certainly were necessary aspects of Morty, Maybe Rick is gonna come back for her later to reimplant her into Morty. I hope he does.
Marta is only 1/5,000,000,000th of Morty... I don't think Morty's character will be affected, although I hope we get to see Marta again! Great episode!
I like how throughout the seasons Morty has gotten much more mature and brave, he is really developing as a person but also as a man, that voice doesn't fit him anymore tho
Personally, as a teen right at his age, I think it’s nice to hear his voice constantly cracking and stuttering. It’s nice when a 14 yr is true to their age, not split into the young kid category or a mature young adult one.
This was incredible, please do more Rick and Morty breakdown videos, I think you have the potential to portray a side of Rick and Morty that some of us haven't seen throughout all 6 seasons so far. It's incredible how you can piece together a story from just one episode, very well done!
I love that you focus on the character dynamics, you always ask the right questions. You’re the kind of viewer that writers want to write for. And great taste in tv too
Morty has been reminded of things before. It’s not like Mortys Mind Blowers tanks have been deleted. I’m sure there is a backup of him that is a confident fix. For now it’s clear they just wanted him to go back to being a clueless sidekick for Rick for a bit. There is no drama or stakes or importance to this absolutely great episode.
I think Morty will regress, but I think it will be temporary. Once whatever story beat, metaconcept, or thematic point this plot serves is fulfilled, he will get the assertive part of himself back.
I was blown away. this was one of my favourite R&M episodes ever! so brilliantly written and deep. depends on how well the ending will be paid off in the future but in a vaccuum this is easily a top 3 episode for me. am I crazy for saying this felt like the most "solar opposites" episode of R&M? maybe because the older mortys sounded a lot like corvo :D
I’m probably in the minority that actually agrees with Ricks decision. The parts of Morty that enjoy and follow Rick get to continue to be Morty, and the parts of Morty that despise Ricks coldness and lack of caring gets to live out a life that is Rick free. Seems like a win win to me
I think while it seems nice, that part of Morty also protects him to some extent. While he may enjoy Rick’s adventures, the part that keeps him in check and contrasts Rick is what keeps him in balance
To continue the metaphor- it’s called free will. Which god grants humanity - which Rick chose to apply, although he’s fiercely atheist . Thus it’s character growth for him as well
My theory is that Marta asked Rick to keep her in the game to mature as a person. Marta is clearly the best part of Morty, and even continued to grow throughout the length of her time in the video game. In the episode it is stated that the game has been "re-centered around a lady living a full life". They also explicitly state that the game can be found again and won't be lost in the warehouse, which suggests to me that we may see it once more in the future. I think that that Marta will be allowed to grow within the time dilation of the game and after a period of time will be re-inserted back into Morty.
So nobody wants to approach the topic of how Rick and Morty just took the livid piss out of theologies? "We are all one consciousness - self experiencing itself - yet, individually we kill each other over the semantics and ability to define what is [when all is permissible] ". We are all "Morty" in the end, and the politics/religious battles that take place mirror the fickle and brittleness of our existences [or how we define them to be - devoid of "Morty"]. I think this episode hit an esoteric understanding of theology/spirituality whilst parodying the peacocking of politicians/leaders we see all too often in our world. So to do all this *whilst* progressing lore / back story with both an A and B plot... the writers are really flexing now!
i think you can make alot of analogies and parralels to the episode where rick and morty toxic self can removed. It reminds me for example, how much rick cared for morty.
I think that, in the case of Marta's absence from Morty being a permanent fundamental change to his person, it will later get resolved as Rick goes to the Blips 'n' Chitz storage room to retrieve her and merge her back into Morty for one reason or another.
Martha probably wasn’t the only part of morty like that. His personality was split into many parts, each personality was split into many parts. Every part of Martha would be in different parts of other of them, giving Morty a whole martha part, just at a lower concentration (in the chemical sense)
Rick also transfered parts of his personality to the bug through the brainalizer, so he really thinks that "8% of anything is expendable", and I wouldn't read much into it
So there's a stronger version of Morty's character in a video game, where time moves much faster. Meaning she will basically become the strongest version of Morty. That sounds like they are laying the ground work for a future plot device.
Agreed. The concept was really interesting just execution made the episode feel kind of boring. The summer B plot was also really boring so that didn’t help.
I felt it was more interesting to watch than the last episode but they couldve improved the summer story more than having them repeat die hard over and over
Amazing video especially the emotional and philosophical take aways towards the end. Also can we please get a helluva boss video I need your thoughts on the new season.
I have an insane theory: So what if the 8% of morty that went against rick beings to grow back as a society and slowly turns to 9% - 10% and at the end of the season or series that percentage that goes against rick grows to 100% and makes rick become evil.
4:37 where you mention that Morty unites the other Morty's also really strikes a chord now since we know that the Morty we have been following since Season 1 is Prime Morty AKA the real ONE TRUE MORTY. Man, this shows writing is so on point
I like that the Die Hard terrorists were basically supposed to be Gungans like JarJar Binks, one even does the shaking his head thing that Boss Nass does in The Phantom Menace
I think the parts of morty don't die, they are reborn, which is why they show Martas daughter. And they made sure to say that the game can be found when needed. So there will be a point when morty being a pushover is a problem and Rick will get the game to fix him.
I personally think that its a bit more of a set back as we see mortas daughter rebelling against her. So mortys rebelliousness is not completely gone just lessened.
plus there were clearly other defiant parts of morty, like the president though i dont know if he survived was defiant and i believe there were more marta was jus the most prevalent
Isn't rick just gonna wait until marta dies and then get her out of the game off camera? Because she's gonna live out her life over the next 10-20 years but thats only a few minutes in game time
Remember the episode where rick was removing memories and storing them? And how there was an incident where they both had their memories wiped? Summer had to upload a backup into them… Rick cant fix dead like with the homeless santa. But if morty survives the game, he can and likely will upload the latest morty memory backup.
Honestly I do think they did it for a canonical reason for Morty to go back to how he was, though I'm curious to see what the rest of the family will do, will they even notice? Will they demand Rick restore that part of him? Wil Rick and Morty go through something so crazy Morty regains that development off screen? Tbh wouldn't put it past them to do the last one lol
I wonder if Morty’s arc in the later seasons are aspects are to what Troy’s arc was supposed to be in community. They both feel very similar characters where they’re niave and trusting at the start but long to be taken as seriously as the “adults” around them. But obviously with Donald Glovers and community’s step back wasn’t possible the first time round
I would say absolutely because Morty's Mindblowers still absolutely exist so he can just do a hard reset on Morty from the last time his memories were saved as was shown at the end of said episode. Though it is interesting how hard he tried to save every part of Morty, especially the Marta part, considering he really only needed Morty not to go brain dead to do the reset.
They got the serialized moments out of the way and can now go back to episodic. Shut the fans up so they can have the freedom to do what they want again. Love it!!
I think that Martha is going to play a role later on whether in this season or the next. Maybe that part of him grows even more then later remerges with Morty to make him more complete and mature. Possibly even helping take down his actual Rick
I feel that S6E1 fell into some of the same mistakes that people were pointing out in season 5, but this episode was simply perfect for me, one of the best in the show
This was a very solid 2nd episode. The implications this episode makes on Morty’s development (and Rick’s) will no doubt start revealing itself… It seems that whenever Morty’s pushed into a situation where he can become more independent of Rick, his natural instinct is to reject Rick… We’ve seen this before in the show… however this time Rick was not able to fully get Morty onboard… what seems to motivate Morty to be partners with Rick is Morty strongly values family. With his original father rejecting Morty too, I think that will affect Morty more than he’d like to admit…But even still family is something Morty values immensely
this episode shocked me. no doubt this will have major ramifications in the future episodes. revert the status quo which kind of stinks because I enjoyed watching morty develop
Rick saying “Do you know, how hard portal travel is now?”, I see it as a translation from the makers (since they _do_ break the fourth wall a lot with these things) as “Do you know, how hard escaping the canon is?” We see this, with Rick literally returning to what made him live out his days as a lifeless husk, what canonly made him the way he is now. I do hope, that Morty sadly becomming more obedient now will be important for this Arc.
The episode was AWESOME the Die Hard being a universal space mono myth is the type of mixture humor high low and pop culture reference that I adore in Rick and Morty we need to wait for episode 3 and others to know how much of Morty character development and brain power was killed in Roy.
I think that this is unimportant, if only Martha stayed behind but the rest of Morty that is defiant to Rick left then he still has that resentment in him. I feel if they wanted to make this a bigger deal they would have added an argument scene at the beginning of the episode.
Rick showed the aliens die hard Rick trick Morty to get in the Roy machine and Rick pulled out the personality that makes Morty evil to Rick. Classic Rick move.
When Rick said the lost bits and percentages won't make a difference, I thought he was either A) Bluffing and negging Morty to convince the remaining 8% (reverse psychology) B) he was actually counting on that 8% to die and to take with them the defiant parts of Morty
Consider that it could potentially be a Rick, Morty and Summer from another universe. We know all the Ricks and Mortys at the citadel were killed, but there was never any indication that every one ever were killed. There could still be a handful floating around out there.
This episode provides a whole new perspective of "we are all one" and simulation theory, while poking fun at religions formed over people misinterpreting these posibilities..
The : “do simulated lives matter?” I had a experience like that a few weeks ago- i was ready for bed - but suddenly my mind experienced something- i felt like my whole life/existence was a fading dream - but then i jumped back to my self - it freaked me out.
im glad you where able to focus on the actual character stuff going on. I couldnt really get over the overtly sacrilegious tone. I know this isnt the first time Rick and Morty has done this but, yaknow I just cant say im a big fan of when rick and morty does that type of thing.
I think that Marta will be back, and I have a feeling that this was a bigger reveal than we thought. Morty might be she'd aspects of Rick. Specifically Rick Prime
I think that piece of Morty being left behind will develop Rick more. Rick has changed and he may realize that he doesn’t actually want old obedient Morty back. He may be ready to start opening himself up to actually relationships instead of one’s where he’s in control. This kind of reminded me of Morty’s mind blowers. He said it was for Morty’s sake ,but it might have actually been so Morty didn’t change and the relationship dynamic could stay the same.
With the death of the portal network it could be argued that Rick no longer "needs" Morty for camouflage. I'm sure they won't do it but with the last two episodes setting up summer as hyper competent in the sort of situations Rick is accustomed too it's almost as if they are setting up Morty's replacement!
I think the ending wasn't a bummer, but an insight into Rick wanting control over morty. He wants Morty to be confident and defiant, but only when it suits him. This is why I think Rick manipulated Marta into wanting to stay in the game. Rick now has a compliant Morty most of the time - quote "whatever Rick, your the boss" - but he also has Marta on ice at blips and chips so that he can bust that side of his personality out when, and only when, it suits him.

Which is why it will hurt so much when Rick Prime kills our Morty.
@@JinKee eh.
Doesn't this mean that the Marta part of Morty is no longer a part of Morty after they left?? Like the best part of him is gone?
It is crazy to think how much effort Rick did put into his morty. 50 years of effort
I mean it's roy. Morty put 50 years of effort into working at the carpet store.
@@bradthunderpants3283 PFFFFT TRUE. But at the same time Rick was self conscious the whole time and morty wasn't. Then again Rick has probably played roy several times so 50 years is probably nothing for him.
@@stanvassilev who's to say we aren't doing that now.
@@bradthunderpants3283 he beat cancer, AND THEN WENT >>>BACK
actually, that has some very specific implications...
that there are guaranteed certainties within the game world...
Season 6 feels like they are embracing multiple potentials from one person in a different way with the characters.
me, who watched severance earlier this year: I understood that reference
@@lyricbot8513 me, who has never seen severance: what? lol. I do know the basics of the plot so tho i guess I kinda do. Of course. I may be talking to a bot here.
I never thought about Space Beth being a result of the writers wanting to have it both ways with Beth's character, but it makes sense. You want these characters to grow and change, but remain recognizable.
I feel like they just write it off as soon a marta dies the personality comes back
@@matti.8465 yeeeeeep.
@@wiktiktik i mean 50% of morty died, not just marthw stayed

If they don't bend the rules, or break them yes.
The mortiest morty
Ah shit
Before watching, my theory is that this episode was a background story for evil morty. There's a ton of resentment for Rick, all three of the characters seem closer to their earlier seasons' traits than the recent ones, Morty's personality has been partially erased because of Rick's inability to be vulnerable (leaving the door open for major hatred for all Ricks), it had no ties to the Season 6 opener
Yoooooo
In my opinion Season 6 feels like a return to the glory days of seasons 1,2,and 3. The first two episodes have been fantastic and have me hooked on the show again :)
Same. I've had some pretty strong mixed feelings about season 5 but so far, Season 6 has really brought me back in. :)
4:38 - This is so funny in hindsight, because the main Morty is actual Morty Prime.
This reminds me about that one episode of Jimmy neutron where Jimmy and Cindy switch minds. They emptied their minds and relied on their friends to put everything back in the right person, and at the very end there was one part that was thrown out. Which did end up effecting Jimmy.
yeah they ended up dating
This is an excellent take. Thanks for sharing.
it's interesting (and also kinda fucked up) that rick essentially lobotomized morty in this episode, but also didn't really have a choice. he obviously left marta behind, but also keep in mind that literally every other aspect of morty's personality was convinced to go with rick by marta.
however she convinced them, either by threatening that they are ultimately insignificant if they don't go with rick, or by playing up how great rick is/how good morty's relationship with him is, or however the fuck she did it, she is ultimately implementing the same idea into every aspect of morty's personality: rick can be trusted, and whatever he says is correct.
this means that EVERY aspect of morty now fully trusts rick and basically idolize him since he had an almost godlike presence in their roy lives (rick says it's not a religion, but they obviously all see it that way). any capacity for critical thought against rick has now been completely terminated.
what's worse, rick basically had no choice in doing this since convincing them to come with him was really the only viable way for the roy mortys to rejoin morty's personality. hence the whole "we don't have 5 billion chloroform rags" bit. all aspects of morty were essentially brainwashed into submission and devotion, and any that weren't (i.e. marta) stayed behind. it's like how every rick on the citadel either abandoned their beth or had their beth die, because any rick who had a living family he cared about wouldn't have discovered interdimensional travel. hence why there are seemingly no dianes on the citadel.
it's also worth noting that this isn't really a "reset" of morty's development. even s1 morty didn't completely trust and often disliked or even went against rick (not killing morty jr, insisting on continuing the adventure, asking for the love potion and demanding he fix the results, demanding he be treated better after learning about the brainwave thing, etc.) but new morty seems incapable of any of that. he isn't really shy or nervous like s1 morty either, he seems like a rick-obeying robot.
idk where exactly the story goes from here, but i don't think the writers are just going to drop any of this. marta is certainly coming back at some point, and total lobotomy/conversion therapy combos (done on a SYNAPTICAL LEVEL!) aren't easily undone. i'd be willing to bet that this pisses off the family as well. maybe rick prime uses marta to try and turn morty against rick c137? who knows.
Wow its even worse when you put it that way now im super curious whats gonna happen next
@@sincerelyzee521 Well said.
I feel this segment of Morty is a big part of his identity as "The One True Morty" or "Morty Prime", Perhaps the device still running will have future implications.
Yeah, the ending being a direct parallel to a horcrux from Harry Potter and The Deathly Hollows suggests this very thing
She will die in game and revert to morty. She isn't immortal within the "Roy" game.
i wonder what happened to the parts of morty that died?
did they effectively disappear
did they reincarnate as the children?
or did they gather up with other people
Wouldn't they still be stored somewhere in the machine if the game didn't restart? Like how a computer can't always delete files entirely or how they sometimes save some data to a temporary folder
Love your Rick and Morty stuff Johnny, as well as all your other analysis videos. This is exactly what I needed to start my Monday!
The fact of a matter is that Morty lost quite a bit of himself when the war broke out he must’ve lost lots of parts of him I wonder how he’ll go living forwards
The name a mort well lived also has a 2nd meaning as Mort can mean die. Hence the die hard references
I hope the "I trust you implicitly" bit was just Morty still being a bit woozy from having just gotten out of Roy.
I just remembered there is Bird Person’s memory of Rick lurking around too. Be interesting to combine those two things.
I think this was a way to regress Morty back to that first season version of morty but will make an appearance in another episode. But they could also show how that effects him as well as the creators because they're stuck in this middle ground between being themselves and living up to the expectations of another entity being Rick and the audience who has been begging and pestering for "classic Rick and Morty" whatever that means to them even tho what brought them together was their own natural attraction to each other
Could be interesting if those parts of Morty end up self-actualizing and developing inside the game, and are later integrated back into Morty.
I think that "morty martas" daughter could be important . Perhaps these personality traits would return through her.
She did rebel against her mum.
I mean he is still 14-15
@@faastah619 I mean, Arya in GoT was something like 14, when she finally arrived in Bravos.
Personally, as a teen right at his age, I think it’s nice to hear his voice constantly cracking and stuttering. It’s nice when a 14 yr is true to their age, not split into the young kid category or a mature young adult one.
@@krispyhoe2126 you sound like morty I didn’t sound that shitty when I was 14
This was incredible, please do more Rick and Morty breakdown videos, I think you have the potential to portray a side of Rick and Morty that some of us haven't seen throughout all 6 seasons so far.
Seems like a win win to me
It wasn’t really Rick’s decision though, it was Marta’s
I think while it seems nice, that part of Morty also protects him to some extent. While he may enjoy Rick’s adventures, the part that keeps him in check and contrasts Rick is what keeps him in balance
To continue the metaphor- it’s called free will. Which god grants humanity - which Rick chose to apply, although he’s fiercely atheist . Thus it’s character growth for him as well
@@peacefulmaroon what
@@peacefulmaroon correction: everyone is born with free will
This was done so well! I can’t believe you uploaded this literally like 12 hours after the episode came out. Must’ve been one hell of a night!
I am so happy the supporters of UA-cam have been so nice. Thanks for liking sharing and commenting and subbing... amazing 👏
💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯
I think that, in the case of Marta's absence from Morty being a permanent fundamental change to his person, it will later get resolved as Rick goes to the Blips 'n' Chitz storage room to retrieve her and merge her back into Morty for one reason or another.
*t is crazy to think how much effort Rick did put into his morty. 50 years of effort*
Martha probably wasn’t the only part of morty like that. His personality was split into many parts, each personality was split into many parts. Every part of Martha would be in different parts of other of them, giving Morty a whole martha part, just at a lower concentration (in the chemical sense)
Rick also transfered parts of his personality to the bug through the brainalizer, so he really thinks that "8% of anything is expendable", and I wouldn't read much into it
its like 8 percent of the plot anyway
Tbh I think this may have been the highest concept R&M episode ever.. full
stop, including the ones you mentioned earlier in the vid
So there's a stronger version of Morty's character in a video game, where time moves much faster. Meaning she will basically become the strongest version of Morty. That sounds like they are laying the ground work for a future plot device.
That’s what I was thinking
This episode is reminiscent of the first two seasons, I hope the rest of the season is this good
I like the writing aspects when you break it down, but it just wasn’t the most entertaining episode for me personally while watching
Agreed. The concept was really interesting just execution made the episode feel kind of boring. The summer B plot was also really boring so that didn’t help.
Agreed. Brilliant ideas and concept but a bit of a fluffed landing for me
Agreed, felt like the episode ended too soon or was fast.. but not sure
Although it had some great gags especially the summer part with die hard gags and the end slowmo 😂
I felt it was more interesting to watch than the last episode but they couldve improved the summer story more than having them repeat die hard over and over
Amazing video especially the emotional and philosophical take aways towards the end. Also can we please get a helluva boss video I need your thoughts on the new season.
I have an insane theory: So what if the 8% of morty that went against rick beings to grow back as a society and slowly turns to 9% - 10% and at the end of the season or series that percentage that goes against rick grows to 100% and makes rick become evil.
you're a legend for having this video out the morning after
4:37 where you mention that Morty unites the other Morty's also really strikes a chord now since we know that the Morty we have been following since Season 1 is Prime Morty AKA the real ONE TRUE MORTY. Man, this shows writing is so on point
I like that the Die Hard terrorists were basically supposed to be Gungans like JarJar Binks, one even does the shaking his head thing that Boss Nass does in The Phantom Menace
Great dissection of the episode. That’s why I love this show, it just make you think in different directions.
The ending kind of confused me, due to time dilation, wouldn’t Marta already have lived out his(?) life and be dead?
Exactly. 1 hour is 300 years in game time.
Didn't they say it was put on loop?
I think the parts of morty don't die, they are reborn, which is why they show Martas daughter. And they made sure to say that the game can be found when needed. So there will be a point when morty being a pushover is a problem and Rick will get the game to fix him.
I like the idea that morty will be like that again over time, it’s experience that made him that way.
My theory's that rick is dummbing down morty to use him as bait to attract prime rick!
Man! Good video, glad I wasn't alone in my concern over Morty's missing character bits.
This episode is how I always thought a hypothetical sequel to Inception would go down
Honestly I do think they did it for a canonical reason for Morty to go back to how he was, though I'm curious to see what the rest of the family will do, will they even notice?
I get how you could be worried about that piece still being in the game, but things like that are learned more than born with
I think he can't bring himself to love morty because he still sees the Rick who killed his wife and daughter in him.
I feel that S6E1 fell into some of the same mistakes that people were pointing out in season 5, but this episode was simply perfect for me, one of the best in the show
This episode was a cool riff on "The Egg"
I think we'll see a alternate family built up we've seen Apocalypse Jerry, Space Beth, and now NPC Morty
I got a bit confused by this episode, but I liked it.
This was a very solid 2nd episode.
The implications this episode makes on Morty’s development (and Rick’s) will no doubt start revealing itself…
It seems that whenever Morty’s pushed into a situation where he can become more independent of Rick, his natural instinct is to reject Rick…
We’ve seen this before in the show… however this time Rick was not able to fully get Morty onboard… what seems to motivate Morty to be partners with Rick is Morty strongly values family.
With his original father rejecting Morty too, I think that will affect Morty more than he’d like to admit…But even still family is something Morty values immensely
this episode shocked me. no doubt this will have major ramifications in the future episodes. revert the status quo which kind of stinks because I enjoyed watching morty develop
Rick saying “Do you know, how hard portal travel is now?”, I see it as a translation from the makers (since they _do_ break the fourth wall a lot with these things) as “Do you know, how hard escaping the canon is?”
We see this, with Rick literally returning to what made him live out his days as a lifeless husk, what canonly made him the way he is now.
Thanks for listening to my song. Welcome to my channel. Let us know how you got here.
Based on how he is acting in the teaser for episode 3, I think Morty's comment about now trusting Rick implicitly was a one-off gag.
Idk something about Roy with ricks voice was hilarious
This is the kind of plot beat that gets thrown away after an episode
Oh thank god. I thought your sponsor was gonna be Bad Dragon 🤣
I remember playing Dragon City in 2007, i cant belieave someone is still playing it
The : “do simulated lives matter?” I had a experience like that a few weeks ago- i was ready for bed - but suddenly my mind experienced something- i felt like my whole life/existence was a fading dream - but then i jumped back to my self - it freaked me out.
Coming back to morty - makes me think of a leviathan album where the cover shows a scared guy crawling back from darkness but there is no escape.
Thaught the sponsor was going to be: bad dragon
I think this may be a one off like when Rick forgot his years worth of improv. Something they use as a joke but is quickly forgotten about.
Are we to expect a breakdown each week for all of season 6 of Rick and morty? If so I’m for it
I’m gonna aim for it! It’s easier when the episode really inspires me to talk haha
im glad you where able to focus on the actual character stuff going on.
I mean worst case scenario he can just be put in the mindblower helmet to correct him? no?
I think the ending wasn't a bummer, but an insight into Rick wanting control over morty. He wants Morty to be confident and defiant, but only when it suits him. This is why I think Rick manipulated Marta into wanting to stay in the game. Rick now has a compliant Morty most of the time - quote "whatever Rick, your the boss" - but he also has Marta on ice at blips and chips so that he can bust that side of his personality out when, and only when, it suits him.
