@Silly_Silicon I'll save you the trouble. i'm mixed on it. I think it has moments of brilliance, but its so trapped in the conventions of adult animation having to be a comedy and Gary is insufferable because of it. Add in the fact, that Season 2 lost me in how repetitive the storytelling structure was. 20 minutes of goofy fun, then HARD, abrupt, broke my fucking neck tone shift to tragedy that felt like fanfiction. As it just had to pick the BIGGEST gut punch or say the most emotionally hurtful thing possible and I just got numb to it and dropped out after S2.

Imagine if the writing changed so that Buzz had a son that we see gradually change every 4 years from his testing the hyperdrive to become more cynical and angry at his father for abandoning his colony and his wife for so long that in the far future, leaves the planet with his colony without a hyperdrive traveling from planet to planet in search of resources and technology to eventually build his desire to rule the galaxy as the evil emperor Zerg.

Honestly, when I heard that there was time travel in this film, before i saw the movie myself, i really thought about the the exact same thing. That was the only way I could see the ts2 'father' plot twist work. That would have been such a cool twist, with buzz still being in his late 20's, facing off against his own son who would be at least 20 years older than him. And maybe he could have gotten the zurg tech from a neigboring planet called 'Planet P-Z-A', where he enslaved the little green 3-eyed creatures that live there to construct all the robots for him

There's only one time I've ever seen an evil version of the hero done perfectly. That was Darkwing Duck. The episode "time and punishment" Gosayln the hero's adopted daughter is catapulted into the future. Without his little girl darkwing duck was driven insane by grief and became worse than any villain seen on the show. In fact its implied he killed most of his villains and those who survived fled the city in terror. The city became a police state all because of a hero driven mad by the loss of his daughter. It's extremely dark and its believable because Darkwing became a hero mostly for the glory and fame and was selfish. Goslyn his adopted daughter was the only positive influence in his life. Without that positive influence to keep him on the straight and narrow he fell so far off the deep end.

I get the wacky and zany concept behind Buzz's new partners. But did they REALLY have to make them THAT incompetent?? They barred on the line of being straight up just dead weight. And you can't help but feel bad for Buzz when he's forced to get along with them for the sake of "character development".
Like yeah, a professional would ABSOLUTELY get frustrated with a bunch of rookies who do nothing but thwart his progress and then expect him to let it slide when the fate of literally all the planet is on the line. Let the man do his job correctly, for god's sake.

Yes they are incompetent but have you seen Buzz in this movie? He is the most idiotic and least self aware of them all. The moral of the story was that he needed to accept that can't do everything alone BUT HE NEVER COULD. From the beginning of the movie through the end he was not able to do anything. In fact, his team of incompetent people who never even had training are able to save his dumb ass multiple times throughout the film. I go into further detail in my comment on this video, but basically the entire moral of the story is completely invalidated because Buzz has never been shown to be capable of doing any competent behavior on his own without help for him to even believe that he would not need help for anything.

I was okay with Zurg being Buzz's father in Toy Story 2 because it didn't break any of the established canon of Buzz Lightyear of Star Command; Zurg was never noted to have any relationship with Buzz, so it was possible. But what they're doing with this movie, is completely breaking all prior canon. Not only is Zurg now Buzz himself instead of his father, but the entire Galactic Alliance has been retconned out of existence. Are there seriously no aliens in this movie?

Spitballing an idea I had that they could have used for Zurg.
Keep him being Buzz's father...but Buzz isn't his only son/child. Zurg is an evil emperor, but the empire needs a successor if things don't go to plan. So Zurg, egomaniac that he is, makes clones of himself. However, only the strongest, wisest, and most resilient should take over. Not wanting children to interfere with his galaxy-conquering plans, he sends them off to different planets all across the galaxy. The plan is to reintroduce himself only to the child who succeeds the most. Buzz, an orphan from a backwater planet, grows into an elite member of star command. While the fact he is a member of an organization that is actively opposed to Zurg is a setback, the power-hungry emperor feels that with enough motivation he can convince his son to take his rightful place by his side. But if Buzz proves to be too stubborn, well... there are plenty of spares around the galaxy.
Alternatively, if you want to make Zurg somewhat more sympathetic, yet still evil, he could have had a wife that grew disillusioned with Zurg's plans for galaxy conquest. She abandons him and takes their infant son with her, afraid that he'll turn their child into a living weapon. Buzz grows up with a fairly normal childhood, yet still feels saddened that he never knew his father. He does manage to become a space ranger. When he meets Zurg, Zurg is genuinely thrilled to have finally found his long-lost son. This becomes one of the conflicts of the story as Buzz is happy to finally meet his father but understands that what Zurg is doing is wrong. Zurg meanwhile, truly does love his son, in his own way, and can't grasp why Buzz isn't 100% on board. They both want to have the other in their life, but because of their beliefs and moral philosophies, they can't live happily together. Buzz has to choose his new family at star command to save the galaxy, even if that means losing his birth father forever.

I thought about that while watching some BLoSC earlier. Why not have Buzz's dad be the one who went forward in time, get lost, then he became Zurg in his attempt to get home? Maybe the time-travel could've scrambled his mind to make him the campy, over-the-top villain in BLoSC.
Idk, just a thought. And yeah, it was just a joke in TS2 but I do agree with what you said.
Edit: And just to add, what if instead of making new characters, they had just used the ones from BLoSC and had the movie be a prequel to the BLoSC movie where Buzz becomes a Space Ranger? Have Warp be the best friend and Buzz's mom be the one who dies, but it's while he's gone the first time around. Then the second time, he tries to go back so he can say goodbye to her, but something goes wrong and he gets catapulted forward in time, where he meets Zurg. Does anyone remember the scene in Toy Story 2 where Buzz finds himself in an aisle of Buzz Light-year toys, only to get replaced by one himself? Why not have that be a plotline?
I have no clue how Light-year lore works but what if cloning was a concept?
Buzz was such a good soldier people wanted to make copies of him. Again and again. Just like the clones from Star wars. But the original couldn't stand being a puppet for his superiors, so he instigated a rebellion and turned all the clones to his side, becoming Zerg. The big reveal is that under their masks, Zerg's robot soldiers are all copies of him.
Buzz's existence would be explained by the fact that his organization had one last clone, so they turned him into the perfect soldier much to Zerg's dismay.
Honestly, that'd make the scene in Toy Story 2 all the more eerie, as you realize the Buzz's being mass manufactured toys is one of the main themes of the original story, which was a cautionary tale about using people as disposable tools...
Not that Disney would ever commit to something so deep. It would call into question their own evil empire.

Wow thats genius. Kinda sick of Star Wars and its references personally being everywhere myself, even the scene in TS2 felt like an unfunny/campy forced sort of ironic funny dead horse gag to me. But I bet so many ACTUAL Star Wars Prequels fans would appreciate the Clone Wars link, and that would thematically regardless make clever sense, as its obvious Buzz is inspired heavily by space opera franchises such as Star Wars in the first place anyway. And I love the deeper allegories for capitalism and using up people's disposable lives (like soldiers, entertainers and sweatshop workers) the way humans use toys without thinking about them until their service is over, both in Andy's world and in the real world. Your idea would also I think humanize and drive home how gross and weirdly unethical a thing like breeding clone armies are, cos I feel like the prequel movies totally glossed over this fact and kinda made it romanticized and cool, nobody really ever looked up and was like "wait this is messed up". And I dont think Star Wars canon (main films anyway) ever really explored the psychology of that.

If they *really* wanted to have the Big Bad Evil Guy be Evil Buzz From Another Universe, I personally think it would have worked significantly better if Evil Buzz was just Evil Buzz and not Zurg. Not only would this not nullify the Star Wars reference/joke in Toy Story 2, but we could also have a bit of fun, even if somebody still wanted to casually pretend that Buzz Lightyear of Star Command wasn't a thing.
Picture this: Evil Buzz has conquered his universe and rules it with an iron fist. At some point, he finds a way into the Lightyear Universe and begins to conquer that. However, he realizes that Star Command and the Space Ranger Corps would pose a powerful threat to him, or at least be a minor annoyance. As Lightyear Buzz is testing the Hyperspace Fuel, Evil Buzz goes out of his way to make sure that the Star Command we all love and know doesn't come to fruition. Heck, if you really wanted the whole "Buzz must stop himself from creating a paradox" ending, Evil Buzz eventually realizes that he unintentionally guaranteed that Star Command will become powerful enough to make conquering the universe a significant hassle. If he wants to keep Star Command weak, he must prevent Lightyear Buzz from doing the tests in the first place. Lightyear Buzz fights to prevent a paradox, Evil Buzz loses, and we all go home.
But what about Zurg? Well, despite being an evil emperor, Zurg isn't as powerful as he is in Buzz Lightyear of Star Command. Maybe he simply decided that being the evil emperor of one planet or galaxy was enough. However, having somehow known about Evil Buzz nearly succeeding in conquering the universe, Lightyear Zurg decides that if anyone's going to conquer the universe, it should be him. And he's still Buzz's father.

This vid sums up exactly what bothered me about this movie. From the shoddy inception and side characters meant to sell merchandise, to the overall waste of a villain.
It could have been much more interesting had they played into the “Zurg as Buzz’s Father” idea, going about in different ways like:
Buzz’s Father being an Ex-Star Command captain fueled by the (what he assumes to be) loss of his son after the initial test flight and blaming Star Command for its failure, setting off to find him in space. The mech suit could’ve been used to to keep him alive to catch up with Buzz during dilations and the robots made to help search for Buzz.
    Or
Buzz’s father was once one of the greatest Space Rangers that vanished in deep space during a mission, but presumed to be killed by alien robots from his last transmission. Thought to be long-since dead, Buzz discovers his Father was assimilated by a tech-based hive mind akin to the Borg from Star Trek, warping his mind and making him vengeful towards Star Command for never rescuing him.
These ideas might sideline the Hawthorne character and/or the “marooned on an alien planet“ plot line, but it’d at least give credence to the story the toys themselves referenced instead of leaving it as a (now nonsensical) Star Wars reference. Feels like loose lore they disregarded in favor of doing the weird “Big Twist” Disney movies feel the need to compulsively put in their movies now. Your audience being able to pick up your reveal before you make it doesn’t always signify bad writing, if anything it’s properly constructed and in this case just answering questions the Toy Story movies posed!

Actually, if this was it's own original story, I'd have her be his wife. He'd be so obsessed with saving his family and getting them off the planet that he would have missed out on his family. Then after he finally finds the way to save them, he he has to deal with the fact that his children are older than him and they don't trust him. His grandchildren are grown and they don't know him.

    ***Major Spoilers***
After the movie, My younger brothers and I debated better options for the story of Lightyear as a whole. My conclusion was that the movie had good elements, that if shifted slightly, would have made a much better movie. For example, instead of old Buzz finding a giant ship with an army of robots and a gigantic suit, Zurg isnt a suit at all, but simply the massive robot he is made out to be. Old Buzz still controls Zurg from the Zurg Ship, and the reveal of who Zurg is still works in a sense. Zurg isnt anyone, but a robot controlled by old Buzz. We had even discussed the idea of the Zurg Robot becoming sentient, à la the Omnidroid from Incredibles 1, and before the Zurg ship is blown up, old Buzz's last commands to the Zurg Bot is to "Destroy Buzz Lightyear," which is one of the major lines said by Zurg's toy counterpart upon his reveal in Toy Story 2. In this concept, Zurg is still the intimidating robot, but his mission as an independent machine bent on completing its now only objective, stopping Buzz, makes so much more sense to the lore of the character of Zurg.
Side Tangent 1: I am confused on the concept of this movie, Lightyear, being the movie Andy sees in theaters, that prompts him to want a Buzz Lightyear action figure for his birthday. Specifically, in this movie, Zurg is future evil Buzz, which changes the cannon of the character of Zurg. Buzz presumably kills Zurg near the end of Lightyear, meaning Zurg is obviously deceased. In the opening of Toy Story 2, Buzz fights Zurg again in the form of the Buzz Lightyear Videogame, and Zurg later appears as a toy in that same movie. My question is, from Lightyear forward, which takes place before Toy Story 1, we as the viewers are to believe that any incarnation of Zurg in the Toy Story universe is a robot suit piloted by an evil future Buzz? Thats what Zurg is? Bizarre direction for the character.
Side Tangent 2: I am definitely biased, but Booster, XR, and Mira are such a better team to me then Izzy, Taika Waititi's character, and convict grandma. I can only name Izzy, because her name was said out-loud the most.
In conclusion, Lightyear was good, but needed work. Sarcastic Chorus has done the best job in terms of UA-camrs expressing my frustrations with Lightyear, how it was handled, and the ripple effects it has for the Toy Story Universe, and Disney as a whole.

  • @pennyjpie
    @pennyjpie 2 роки тому +6

I have a couple ideas. Probably fanfiction-y but they could work?
I feel like I really like the idea of showing that people are ultimately morphed by their environment and the trauma they go through and that is what could lead to Buzz losing the good part of himself. But the thing is they didn’t really show enough of that to convey the lose Buzz was experiencing and how that effected him in the future. Also one of the biggest parts of Buzz’s character arc was that he was supposed to prefer working alone, except with Hawthorne. I wish that they had explored that better honestly because I could totally see this Buzz being so obsessed with his mistake that he would do anything to reverse it to save her. I think maybe what could have been interesting is if they had leaned into that idea of Buzz projecting his guilt onto the idea of saving Hawthorne and the colony at all costs, even at the cost of adjusting to their new life. That obsession leads to him isolating himself. So when in the future at the split point where Buzz makes it home and decides to fly to another galaxy to escape imprisonment by the new colony leader, if he already felt no connection to them, it would make more sense for him to run.
So I propose that something happens to Hawthorne or the people in the colony he cared about to result in more of a reason for Buzz to push aside his internal struggle. Maybe Hawthorne asks him to stop traveling and to just live their life and he does. He stays for a couple months or a year or so and tries to build a connection with the people there but it’s tougher to now. But Hawthorne is getting old and getting ill. Or maybe the wildlife on the planet is adjust to the humans faster and faster and becoming more dangerous. And have him kind of process the guilt he feels about essentially stranding them on that planet. This is a stretch timeline wise, but I think having him meet Izzy as a child would have been awesome too but he’s so obsessed with “The Mission” which he’s changed from doing what’s best for the entire colony that he ironically misses out on the blooming new people of the colony. So he knows Hawthorne’s grand daughter exists, but he’s not really aware of her. To him, he’s only known Izzy for like five minutes and he’s constantly thinking of his next move to complete the mission because that’s all he thinks of when he’s around Hawthorne. Constantly trying again and again to achieve hyper-speed every 4 or so years means that the people in the colony barely know him. To the kids growing up, he’s like an urban legend. To the adults, he’s a lost cause, or maybe some of them even blame him for what’s happened. And everytime he comes back to the planet, less and less people remember him, and he knows less and less of the people who were originally there to begin with.
I think he should have had the conversation with Hawthorne, who was clearly ill and passively jokes about how old she is now, but she’s in good spirits. She’s lived a full happy life but Buzz doesn’t want to accept that she’s old and could pass away, so he’s in denial and basically like “Nah you’re fine, you look the same as yesterday.” and implies he’s going to go to space again, but he’s also hesitant because part of him feels like if he leaves, it’ll be the last time he sees her again. And he’s like “What can I do to help?” And Hawthorne just says “Just come home.” Or something, you know Pixar tears and shit. And then she falls asleep or something, not dies. Buzz genuinely considers staying but at the last second decides that he has to try again, she’s not really going to pass away, right?
    But yeah, obviously she does.
So when Buzz comes back and realizes she’s gone, this is where he begins to spiral into what creates Old Buzz. He’s already a stranger to most of the people in the colony now, and they see him as some weird guy who pops up every few years. So Buzz virtually doesn’t know anyone anymore, everyone he used to know is passed on. And the people left in the future see him as a threat. So what other choice does he have but to attempt to save the people of the past? If they present this in a way where it clearly shows that Buzz is hurt and alone, that can contribute to the guilt Old Buzz feels in failing all the people he cared about before. So when Buzz attempts the successful hyper speed run, he’s in a mental place of the sunk cost fallacy where he’s attempted save everyone so many times he’s at the point where it *has* to work. (I’m thinking like Homura from Madoka Magica) When he ends up alone in space, using the technology, it’s be cool to see him attempt to cope with the fact that he needs people and he’s miserable without them, but he honestly feels he had no other choice but to do whatever’s necessary to reverse his mistakes. Old Buzz doesn’t make sense because he’s too heartless, he needs to have depth. Honestly, his plan has a pretty good backing, it makes sense but the fact that all his compassion is gone doesn’t. I think it’d be more impactful if he held onto his compassion but painfully pushed it back for the sake of his end goals. And if Old Buzz were to meet Izzy for a moment, that could be awesome because in a way he would see how wrong he was about the whole thing, and that Buzz prime is right that Hawthorne did have a full life that he missed out on…but because of the sunk cost fallacy, he says something like “I made a promise to her, not you.” And continues to try to stop them. That could show a Buzz that’s going against his own moral compass out of the trauma he never got to process, that Prime Buzz is attempting to process by getting to know Hawthorne’s legacy.
Idk I just think that if they had explored it more it really could have worked better, but you can tell they had a lot of pacing issues and clearly didn’t want make any of the good guys appear unlikeable for even a moment…which sucks because some of the best Pixar characters come from people who were assholes and backwards and learned to adjust their views. Having Buzz fight a version of himself who so easily turned out so different could have been awesome if they set him up to be more flawed than just a co-worker who refusing to call for back up when the check-out line gets long. It’s such a cool philosophical concept confronting yourself who had different experiences and seeing how differently they turned out. But they were too weak on it…
Also they rushed the ending and clearly only wanted to set up a sequel.
The Cat was the best character, I forgot his name though if that tells you something. Izzy was second best, I liked her scene of going into space with the Cat. I think Chris Evans did a pretty good job voice acting this role, I was convinced he could be Buzz. It was the writing for me that held him back though.
Bonus: this is definitely fanfiction stuff but I have this cute character building idea where like:
Izzy recalls one of Hawthorne’s last conversations with her before she passed on and she mentions that she has a friend who’s always looking out for her and he’ll look out for Izzy to. And Izzy askes if it’s that Buzz guy and where will she find him. So Hawthorne tells her to “Look out into the stars and you’ll see him. He should be due back anyday now.”
But this was the time when Buzz left for 20 years, so Izzy looks out into the stars almost every night and he never come back. It’s to the point where Izzy wonders if he even really existed because she only met him once when she was very young. And like maybe one night, adult Izzy looks out to the stars almost with this kind of hope like “please appear”- and instead of Buzz, it’s Zerg’s space ship. (So technically Buzz did appear like Hawthorne said but like Izzy doesn’t know that twist. ) But this day is what truly segments Izzy’s ideas to want to fight for herself instead of holding onto the past. And it can be a good compare and contrast to Izzy’s view on life vs Buzz, who has yet to process the loss of his good friend.
    Ok I’m done now.

Imagine if during lightyear people never refered as "buzz" but "lightyear" and at the end of the movie "lightyear" becomes zurg and at the very end they show a mother with his kid and the kid asks where is his dad and his mother says something like "he is in a very important mission Buzz, he is doing it to protect us". So we didnt got a Buzz lightyear movie but the story origin of how buzz's dad becomes zurg

Zurg was always one of my favorite Toy Story characters. After hearing this reveal... Pixar was better off [finally] acknowledging the Star Command show, not having this movie be the Buzz toy's inspiration and just be a reimagining or whatever. Why would Buzz constantly be fighting and defending the galaxy from himself??

Zurg is/was one of my favorite villains as a kid, design was sick, had charm & the joke about Zurg being Buzz's father was cool & a great callback to Darth Vader, (Zurg is my biggest highlight from BLoSC & probably from TS2) but what they did to him in this movie is very disappointing, design isn't my cup of tea (looks more robotic than maybe a cyborg), he lost his cool cape, & they made him Buzz from the future. I would've liked it if they made him his own character, there's theory's that there is a real Zurg & that's where old Buzz got all his shit from & that they made a deal, idk, only time will tell

They should have said bc the first crystal was unstable, it split buzz into two time lines, one went back first. They tried to arrest him and he ran, then a few years later, the real him arrived back. So many loop holes in the movie.

I’d say it’s more Toy Story is past it’s prime instead of Pixar. I mean, TS 1-3 was perfection, and it kind of got undone by 4.
And yes, I don’t get if they weren’t doing Tim Allen, why they didn’t get Patrick Warburton back, instead of mixing it up by having different actors for each version.

What annoyed me too was the fact they inserted this movie inside the original movies. Specifically, that this movie was added in the original movies timeline as coming out BEFORE the toy was made in Toy Story.. With the tv series coming out AFTER that.. Which I find unbelievable especially with some aspects of this movie that would not have been as acceptable in the timeline with andy as a kid, you know those aspects.

I had a dream once that there was an Incredibles movie with a Days of Future Past-like storyline. The government used robots -- like the Sentinels except they looked like the Iron Giant -- to track down and capture Supers; some of these robots were equipped with a primitive time manipulation technology. Into this world comes Fenix, an aged, Cable-like Super who strikes fear into everyone because he's not above killing to achieve his ends. It turns out that Fenix is Mr. Incredible from the future, and the technology had evolved into full-on time travel, allowing him to go to the past before the event that made him into Fenix would occur -- the death of Elastigirl.
The thing is, I think Dixar could make a story like that work, because Mr. Incredible is just likable *enough*. He's basically a good person, but he has a massive ego and a lot of rage boiling underneath that's made him hurt people and come close to killing in the past. So a tragedy like losing Elastigirl could cause him to snap. There would also be a lot of room for Pixar humor, like having a Bob-Elastigirl-Fenix love triangle where Elastigirl develops a crush on the brooding, dangerous Fenix, paralleling the idea that Lois Lane is infatuated with Superman but doesn't take Clark Kent seriously, not knowing they're the same person. Or a joke about how Fenix comes from the grim future of... the 1990s (when edgy antihero characters like Cable and Lobo were all the rage in comics). The Incredibles movies being set in the mid-60s of course.
Lightyear? Mmmmmmreehhhhhhh... Dixar has really gone off the rails. Close to being fully digested by the Disney sarlacc.
