    I think a lot of Jerry's character development comes from being shunted into his 'home' dimension at the beginning of the season and being faced (however briefly) with his family's 'season 2' dysfunction. In this episode, he realized he was slipping back into that dysfunction and acted to correct it; something his season 2 self never would have done.

      True, but to be fair, she had the exact same experience, except her Rick actually came back and died within less than a year alongside that universe's Morty, at which point they were replaced by C-137 Rick and Morty who were more or less identical. That universe's Rick is a really interesting case, because not only did he leave like Cronenberg reality Rick, but he also voluntarily chose to come back of his own accord, unless the Rick that came back was also another universe's Rick, of course. Whi could honestly keep track? Infinite is a big number and there are basically an infinite number of Ricks who are almost exactly the same, except for some tiny, irrelevant detail.

    I think the post credits with Jerry kissing another Jerry shows how different he is from Beth. He doesn’t do anything over the top or anything and we know he’s ok with men cause of Mr Nimbus, he kisses himself once, shakes hands and goes off. I don't think Rick didn't care about Beth or who the clone is. He had to go through a lot just to make sure he didn't know, giving up a great amount of control over Beth and potentially letting her go off to her death in space where he won't know if he loses her. I think clone Beth was one of the most respectful moves Rick made for Beth.

    • @Tyler_W
      @Tyler_W Рік тому +66

      Is it messed up? A little, as he well admits, and it was something that happened as a product of his own issues which he openly admitted when he said he was a terrible father at the end of season 4, but he also surrendered a great deal of control over Beth at the same time. If they didn't know who was "the real Beth" and he did, that's something pretty big to hold over someone. In a way, as messed up as it was, it kinda gave Beth control of her own self-perception and sense of agency which, perhaps accidentally, does show a level of growth on his part.

      @@ithamarlowe2629 Not clones, but not his original family. I think, though, that they've portrayed Rick as becoming more attached to everyone in the family, including Jerry. Even though Rick typically sees clones as an exact copy, he definitely was having strong conflicts over it, having to drink himself unconconscience just to ensure he didn't truly know who was who. Perhaps he's seeing Beth more equally to his "true" daughter now with how he's developing and can put some sort of distinction between the clone if he actually knew who was who. This way, it's all out of his hands and he did it for Beth, a living ghost of his child.

    I agree Jerry had the most (and weirdest) development in the episode (besides Beth) in how he created this middle ground where he can not only still be happy with his wife(wives?) but open minded and respectful of her needs to be happy. And as you said, it’s a recreation of what happened with his parents marriage. Honestly though, I’m pretty sure Mr Nimbus brought out this new kink in the both of them since they clearly had a threesome with him.
    In other words: he’s become his father. Pro polygamy and getting in on the action himself. A lot of viewers thought this episode derailed their development from the premier but that doesn’t seem to be the case.

    Now, here's the interesting part of the whole "Narcissist Self-Cest" Trend: Narcissists... kind of hate themselves.
    Like, we know the archetypical "I'm the most important person in the world, the universe revolves around me", but that tends to stem from genuine self hatred. Heaps upon heaps of self centered expectations they lay down on themself that they tend push onto others while trying to prop up themself.
    So in a weird way, being able to love yourself like Beth does is one of the healthiest things that could happen.

    • @cheyennec5546
      @cheyennec5546 Рік тому +35

      Nah, There’s a lesson on loving yourself and learning stuff & then there’s writers seeing how far they can go with the concept of narcissism through yet another “-cest” fetish for shock humor.
      Nobody in the family was completely ok, there was no closure. Rick Morty and Summer witnessed self-cest on a traumatic degree & Jerry was only upset because he wasn’t part of this narcissistic cucking/3 way until he was, somehow fixing a still crumbling marriage.
      Roll credits.

    • @Nu_Wen
      @Nu_Wen Рік тому +1

      I agree with you here, I don't personally believe that narcissists would bang themselves unless it was to hurt someone else and to say "I love myself more than you". their "self-love" is completely false and used as a tool to make others believe it for them.
      I personally believe that you would fall in love with yourself if you truly loved yourself, what that would look like for each person would depend on the person, with most people most likely having platonic relationships with themselves.
      it's ASSUMED that a narcissist would fall in love with themselves if they met themselves, but the real reason why they want everyone to fall in love with them is that they hate themselves. it's precisely because they don't love themselves that they try so hard to win everyone else's love and admiration. a real narcissist would hate themselves and wouldn't be satisfied with only themselves as company, at most, they would pretend in front of other people if it meant that they could convince them to do whatever they wanted, including and especially loving them more.
      rick's reaction to himself is closer to the reaction you would see from a narcissist. he hates himself and though he has stated that he's already done himself, he is also acutely aware that every version of him would try to kill him instead of help him, including versions of him that stemmed from him specifically. he only ever has rude things to say about himself and he doesn't trust any version of himself unless under very specific circumstances and even then, that "trust" is basically the strength of cheap thread.
      even if Beth were a narcissist, she's one in healing, she is capable of looking at herself and genuinely saying "i love myself" and "i trust myself" as opposed to the opposite. beth takes it to a whole 'nother level, but other than that I agree that this seems healthy.

But when they sacrifice those slow down scenes for jokes, people hate it. Talk about a catch 22.

Her longing to be someone she couldn’t and “self-love” has made her clasp on to a life that she never had, and her obsession with keeping clone beth around damages Morty and Summer. Not to mention that Space Beth and Earth Beth aren’t “the same person.” They’ve lived a long time apart and had a lot of different experiences. This is essentially like having a relationship with an identical twin sibling.

    I think people are being weirdly charitable towards Beth here. The way both Beths talk smack about Jerry "needing to be in control" of it is... extremely fucked up, given by this point they're in an open marriage, as demonstrated with the Mr. Nimbus episode.
    It's a basic rule of open relationships that you run things by your partner before doing them. Beth didn't. It's a pretty basic thing of her being in the wrong, even if there was a meaningful degree of symbolism to it.
    I think he summarizes it best: "It's not 'A Handmaid's Tale' to loop in your husband."
    Now that said, I love that they made him develop from who he was. Him coming out of pillbug mode (on top of how he even got it) was probably one of the most refreshing bit of healthy self-confidence and self-acceptance that I wasn't expecting the episode to go down.

    The comedy of the episode works because most of it comes from either the family being weirded out and annoyed by the ship which is relatable, or the show itself presenting other types unrelated jokes so that the audience can forget of what we just saw.

    I guess what I don't understand is how Beth puts herself in the position of "Jerry's wife" when theoretically she is outside of their finite curve dynamic
    Or just on the basic level: she is outside of the marriage. It's not a card to pull as a power play, she never married him. So it's an interloper admitting that they are doing what they do to intrude. She is not grounded here. The only thing she has is self-justification and deflection. It's plain even for Morty to gripe over
    Jerry going into pill bug form was the smartest play because there is no way he could take on Beth and her father to have her removed from the home
    I suppose the only thing that Jerry has above everyone is the structure of marriage. I'd argue that it's bigger than Beth >> it's bigger than Rick since he is the being that instantiated the finite curve. All that he does he does out of spite for his lost family. Rick prime kills that family out of spite for C-137's contentedness
    In other words the space between consenting adults creates the universe. Idealism is what makes Jerry's toxic, but all the same there is power in that bond. It's just weird for Space Beth to act like a rebellious teenager over it, either you're in or you're out. You don't get to pick and choose what rules to follow

    Learning to find love with a human being separate from yourself requires giving up on the ideas of a "perfect partner" that you've grown up with, because the goal of real human love cannot be to try to squeeze someone into that archetypical form in your imagination. It cannot work anyway, and it's the source of agony in so many relationships, because most people never learn this lesson. You have to realize, that in order to be happy you have to be ready to welcome to your life someone who isn't you, and learn to love them for who they are.
    I'm sorry but seeking anything healthy in creating a literal, romantic and sexual relationship with a literal clone of yourself is complete nonsense. It's the opposite of giving up on those preexisting expectations and assumptions of what your partner should be, it's the absolute consolidation of your inability to venture anywhere beyond yourself in your pursuit of love, and thus of your inability to love another human. I'm melting from cringe watching this bs.

    I'm afraid I can't help but nitpick, but the episode Jerry's parents showed up was the first Christmas episode, as apparent by all the Christmas decorations and clothing. Although you likely figured that out while editing the video.
    I'm also afraid that was two Jerries ago. Anatomy Park was the third episode and in the sixth episode Rick turned everyone outside of the family into Cronenbergs and fled to another time line, meaning the Jerry who was uncomfortable with this parents being polyamorous was just killed by Prime Rick. Granted the next Jerry likely had a similar experience, Rick choosing a universe that was the same until a little while ago, but that Jerry was infected by Mr. Frundles. This is a third Jerry, randomly stuck with them because of the Jerryboree.

    I feel like the hole “selfcest,” tag is one that needs to be done on a case by case basis, and with varying degrees on other peoples preferences.
    On the one hand it is important to love you’re self and who better to make a connection with than and knows you better than yourself.
    On the other hand I feel like it was never supposed to be this literal. And this is the purest and literal definition of narcissism. Like Rick said, “there is master bating and then there is, master bating.”
    It’s great Beth can find someone she can connect with. But when it starts affecting you and the ones around you badly. You’ve gone too far.
    Not to mention that adding Jerry in at the end in the worlds most uncomfortable three way, just made this episode all kinds of uncomfortable.
    Then there was that bit at the end with Rick and the wine, that makes me wonder if this was planned or not.

    The best "use" of a clone: self awareness being in love and respectin' her identity. I love Jerry reaction: he loves family Betty, he's okay with her feelings and has learnt that he doesn't need to take advantage on HER insecurities to feel emotionally safe. I'm liking it!

    i understand the meaning behind it, but i still felt second hand embarrassment and awkwardness throughout the entire a plot. I adored the b plot though, rick and his grandkids interacting like a down to earth family??? i need more
    the jerry x jerry kiss was hilarious though, since it was more of a throwaway gag.

    i liked the video, nice work, it was alot of fun to watch and hear your opinions on it.
    i was hoping you would comment on the part near the end. as space beth is leaving jerry says "well seems like we all learned a little lesson this weekend. atleast i know i did" and rick says "me too jerry, me too." next we see rick pick up the bottle of wine both beths were drinking and he puts it in a secret storage place where other weird bottles are, and then destroys the remote to access it.
    i didnt know what this meant, i was wondering if it meant rick for some reason planned for this to happen by putting something in the drink to cause the beths to feel the way they did about each other.

    It still to me a sad relationship like it looks romanticized but at the end they still haven't completely except or worked through their lives just masked it. Like Space Beth and Earth Beth vicariously are attracted to what each other have but they are practically the same person so yeah shrug.
