  • Well this video is the love child of a metric ton of a million bad decisions. Some that I can only blame myself for and others that are entirely on the show itself. Never have I seen a show that I though was meh, sour so fast the more I think about it.
Will probably do a bang, marry kill for the entire cast because eye candy is about all they're good for.

Bro, the reason why the show is mostly focusing on men is because greek mythology is often popular with woman and gay men. This show was sexualizing men for the ''female gaze'' if anything.

    • @dr.archaeopteryx5512
      @dr.archaeopteryx5512 2 роки тому +17

@@plzleavemealone9660 The "female gaze" isn't just the male gaze but applied to men. That's largely just men jerking off their self-inserts. Women are generally less shallow than men when it comes to partner selection (not much less, but hey), so any successful heartthrob character will have to have a charming personality, or at least convince a female POV that he has one. This is because dating is potentially way more dangerous for women than for men, due to the way some men feel entitled to womens bodies, or prioritize courtship over ensuring each others safety, among others.
Furthermore, if the show wanted to attract women, the deities they should have focused on are precisely Artemis (who is just. A mood) or Athena (a badass who actually has something going on, and would bounce off of like half the pantheon quite well in either a straightman, mentorial, or unlikely duo way), or someone from a lower rank who could actually have something going for them, such as Apollo; instead of the fucking serial rapist and adulterer. Because, trust me, there's few better ways to drive women and queer people away than to portray a serial rapist positively while also focussing on him. Like, if I wanna see hot men, playgirl magazine covers are just a quick google search away.

Funnily enough, since you were talking about Disney movies, the mythology inspired one THERE (also with Zeus as a father figure) is kind of an outlier. True Hercules interacts more with his dad, but the the thing is: he has TWO dads and TWO moms and manages to keep everyone alive and have a good relationship with all of them by the end. None of them has to die to kick-start his adventure or give it meaning, and when he finds his biological parents, he still shows his adopted ones, the people who raised him, love and respect and makes sure they can live a good life with the money he earned. Other Disney characters see Hercules and weep.

We could look at women of many different statuses (a woman who is/was a traditional wife, maybe a prostitute, maybe a priestess or a few , maybe an/the Oracle of Delphi) and we could see how they interact with the gods as well, both symbolically and literally. Imagine (if we are doing the classic hero journey narrative) them meeting Artemis and her huntresses, the Amazon, and other female figures and groups in mythology! It would be so cool

In the case of the Incompetent-Father trope then yes, The Lion King strays away from that trope by having Mufasa as a great dad who loves his son, and who allows his father instincts to guide him into raising Simba and protecting him. He's basically the anti-Zeus.
About the mother trope, well... Sarabi doesn't die, so that's a plus, but she really is a minor character, with only a couple of scenes. Even so, it's insinuated that she had a healthy relationship with Mufasa, like when she got injured by Scar, and then adult Simba went to help her, for a moment she thought he was Mufasa. That little detail was pretty sweet and heart-breaking.
And let's give her praise for not losing her poise and courage: she thought for a long time that both her son and her husband were dead. Any stereotypical mother character would lose all hope (and probably end her own life) after that. But no, she kept her position in the pride, trying to prevent Scar from ruining everything, obviously being more competent than him about ruling the land. She stands up to him and never cowers in fear, to the at-that-time king for crying out loud!! One can tell by that scene that she was a tough and undaunted leader. Losing her family obviously pained her deeply, but she kept her responsibilities in the pride so she could help the other lions, THAT's a way more complex character than every single mother in Blood of Zeus combined.
Despite that, the movie is really all about Simba's relationship with his father, which isn't bad, but it doesn't allow many scenes with the mother, so people won't remember Sarabi that much.

Yesss the dead mother trope is so bad I’m so glad someone finally calls it out!!! I always get annoyed by this trope just because it’s supposed to set up the main character as their “coming of age”. But a character can do that without a dead mom. Brave, despite not liking the whole bear thing, was a good show of this. I gave the still coming of age story but made the mom an interesting character. She was the queen, she could control an entire crowd with ease and charisma, she was more than just merida’s mom who didn’t listen to her requests to not want a marriage. She eve got to tell her side of the story. Thorigh spending time together in the movie she got to show her daughter parts of her beyond just being her mean mother. This trope dosent have to exist just based on brave Merida can still become independent and grow up but still have her mom there to support her and grow with her as a person.

I'm so sick of "Coming of age" stories relying on dead parents, usually the mother or both of them. People grow up regardless if their parents are dead, it's not a story trigger based in reality since most people have parents well into their adult years and you don't need them to be dead to start living your real life. I think Moana is the only story to have a characters coming of age motivation be her own but even then her grandma died to set off her adventure.
And a parent being dead doesn't have to be bad either if their death isn't purely for the sake of developing the main character, I think Onward is the only story I can recall that has the dead parent trope as a part of the main characters identity but doesn't straight up murder them to push the story along, if that makes sense? Their father is dead but him dying wasn't what traumatized the kids enough to start their adventure, a chance to see him did.
This is kinda the same frustration with killing a wife or sibling just to hurt the main character, it's objectifying a character for plot.

It’s hard to break tradition when it’s been practically hardwired into into our storytelling brains. I mean, even in media where the parents are still alive, you have the cliche of them either not mattering at or just being antagonists since developing them more could run the risk of taking away focus on the protagonists. It’s easier for writers to thin the numbers for the sake of simplicity.

well said man. absolutely hate how zeus was "redeemed" and turned out to be a loving father and husband in the end and actually loved hera blah blah. i was actually expecting blood of zeus to vindicate hera and her rage (against zeus and not electra) and zeus made out to be the _actual_ villain of the story but nope. also the characters have like almost zero chemistry besides the smugglers who are very much 🎶two bros chilling in a hot tub NOT 5 feet apart because they're gay🎶 and heron looking at [ancient greek isaac]'s chest for more than 3 seconds (again very gay). like alexia had one good interaction with heron and that was it; she was literally there to fill out the girl of the group quota. like you said, this was not a good show, its rife it toxic tropes and bad writing but the character design absolutely slaps and i wish we ended up getting beefier/chunkier (bolin looking) heron. a lesson that good visuals do not mean a good story

I want to comment on the dead Disney mom thing. Walt lost his mother at a young age and was forced to work by his less then great father. Walt in his own words doesn't make his father sound bad but the man was. Like Walt states he was beaten by the man but then adds "and because of that I'm not soft" which says ALOT. His mother's death hit him hard and the trope started from his pain. He was trying to share how hard and how much hurt he was feeling/felt. All the moms are dead BECAUSE he valued them which created an odd out come.

If it's offscreen or it just happened to her as a side character without any in-depth about her relation with the kids then at most we're pity for the kids but there's nothing special about it to remember and lately it's been done like that so often I'm desensitized of it.

Her own upbringing was scheming and cold, she was raised in a toxic and unloving environment. Through a lot of introspection, talking with people she's learned to trust, and many mistakes, she comes to recognize her daughter's unmet needs and her own unmet needs, leading to a slow and painful recovery for both of them.

OSP's Trope Talk series isn't directed towards 'toxic tropes' (which I don't believe a trope can be toxic. They can be overdone but like any trope, they just need to be moderated). Trope Talk is just a series used to talk about and analyze the tropes, why/how they're used, where they are used well/bad. You never bring up the reason so many Disney characters don't have a mom: It's because Walt's mom died when he was young and that affected his writing. He knew what it was like to lose his mom and be raised by one parent. A writer's life often affects what they write. A lot of the characters you showed had both parents dead, not just the mom. Castlevania was certainly a lot better than BoZ but I don't think it was as bad as you make it out to be. It was a weird adaptation of the mythology but as someone who's into mythology especially the Greek kind, I appreciate most things based on it; It's the basis for a lot of my own stories.
