Mr Hist for what you get, A5100 is an mazing deal breaker. But although I just wish the A6000 was slightly cheaper just because I want the view Finder and the extra hot-shoe.
I suppose its the aperture, 2.8 vs 3.5 of the 1650 kit lens (when both camera lenses are wide open) but then the 5100 is more forgiving i believe if you increase the iso to compensate.
Nice review Gary, that 5100 does a lot for it’s price! I like having interchangeable lenses so you can pick the best lens for you use. Again, thanks for the nice review!
Great comparison I think for my needs I will get the a5100 in fact I already did thanks to your last video. Just got this for vlogging. Thanks for sharing
Bro, nice review, very helpful because I'm just one step away from grabbing this camera, great job. Your footage is so crisp and clean if you do not mind what camera are you filming with?
If you're primarily a stills photographer, I believe the A5100 is a better choice. I have used the NEX5N and the NEX7 and find their image quality outstanding. Also, if like me, your gear is used a great lot of time hiking/backpacking, you can be faced with the dreaded dirt in the lens cover blades on the RX100 series. When the conditions are dusty and sandy, that type of lens cover can become sticky or jammed. Something you may not notice until you upload and find all your images have a slight vignette. More video focused? Sure, then the RX100.
I used to have a Sony a5000, and I would highly recommend that one as well. I think the RX100 is too expensive - a6500 territory. For a little (& inexpensive) workhorse, an a5100 or a5000 is great. For more serious use, I would want a mic jack and more lens options, so that excludes the RX100.
Daniel's Loose Ends I have a Sony a5000 and the image quality and video quality is excellent. Especially with a 35 or 50mm 1.8 prime lens. Plus the built in Wi-Fi to transfer your images to your phone for quick sharing is a killer feature.
It's dynamite - I've though about keeping an eye out for a used body on the cheap (or a5100). I have an a6300 with the 18-105 f/4, so I've got the 16-50 mm unused. It's not a perfect lens, but hey, it's small and stabilized. In fact, when I watch old videos taken on the a5000, there's a look I really miss about the out-of-camera video - it's honestly better than what comes straight out of the a6300 (which is better overall and can produce much better video in the end; you just have to touch it up). Cheers!
Daniel's Loose Ends Nice! I've been eyeing the 18-105mm for a while but haven't pulled the trigger because I feel like it's $100 overpriced. I can get a Sigma 35mm and a 60mm and still have some money left over. Do you think the 18-105mm is worth the price?
I like it at lot - I paid $400 used (B&H). I was between that and the new 18-135, but the constant f/4 and bigger design made me lean towards it. I have no regrets. My brother has the expensive 16-70 f/4 Zeiss which is very nice, but a LOT more money. Mine never leaves my camera. That will change when I get a prime lens one of these days (I think the SEL 50 f/1.8; I've used my brother's and I love it). Long story short, I do recommend the 18-105.
Tough one, I'm with Mr Hist about liking the a5100 because of the interchangeable lens capability and price. The RX100 is not in my neighborhood at this time either.
I bought the A5100 with zoom lens and only 1200 clicks for € 130. Good deal. A camera is only functionally small when it fits in your pocket. Everything beyond that is just big. The only argument then is how heavy it is. An A7 with, for example, a 24-105 on it is not comfortable when you are a tourist. Then the A5100 is more convenient. But during the holidays you are usually in sunny areas and then the screen of the 5100 is much too dark. Then you miss a viewfinder. A viewfinder is also more convenient if you wear glasses because you can usually adjust the focus. With that small screen you have to put on and take off glasses. For video, it lacks the mic and headphone and heats up quickly. So for me it's a camera. Another disadvantage, you can take pictures with it without a lens on it, the image even appears on your screen, only the image is not saved. So that happened to me all afternoon. Then continued on my iPhone. And that was a relief. A camera that also allows you to make phone calls.. LOL
not likely but i'd love that.... a5500 with nice 1080p, up to 120fps, with picture profiles and image stablization and mic jack, would be perfect vlogging camera
It also works great with sony remote app. I can set mine up on a tripod and run it with smart phone. It's a nice little camera. I bought 2, in like new condition, with kits for less than 500USD. Image quality is great.
Is it just me, or does the big sensor in a A5100 help video look reasonably close to the 4K quality that might come from one of the RX100s? Sure, the 4K will still be sharper, but not sure that it's by a huge amount! Even then, I don't know if the difference will be all that noticeable unless viewed on a huge 75-inch (or larger) 4K HDTV.
Brother please make a video on i Phone 12 Pro Max OIS Video stability & Picture quality V/S entry level mirrorless cameras like Sony A5100, Sony RX100 Mark iii compact camera 📷
Sadly camera makers tend to have a habit of making the lower end cameras harder to use. For example the Sony A7R series is far easier to use then the sony A5100. Same with Nikon, where something like the Nikon D5 or D850 is easier/ more user friendly to use than something like a D3400. While the RX100 VI is really good for such a small sensor, it is massively overpriced for what it offers. If you do not need video, you are better off getting something like an older gen Sony A7II with a 28-70mm kit lens for about the same price.
thanks!! this is a video I had to see!! I want a smaller (than a DSLR) camera and this 5100 is in the mix, since I do not think a 6100-6600 are an option ($$)
Hey I have a serious question that's no one really talks about. Would it be beneficial to have a larger sensor with less MP or a smaller sensor with more MP For example 16mp micro for third Vs 20mp 1inch Sensor
Thanks a lot for creating this video! Absolutely amazing. I have been looking for a review that specifically compared these two cameras but couldn't find anything until your review. Have a cookie mate, Cheers :)
I just came back from the future and got a Sony RX100 X. It shoots in 10K, has a 10mm to 10,000mm lens, and cost $10 million dollars. It's the same size too. Just plain awesome! Want one?
POCKET ABLE or NOT TO POCKET ABLE that is the question answer and?m50 and 5100 so so close but unless u are MC Hammer pants NO also the Intimidation to people of lens cameras the undercover ness of the pocketables also those later model rx have more slo mo than a cow can mow case closed if after Bokeh the v is better mr is great 6 menu options settings easily scroll through
Pocketable means never put it in your pocket. Everyone who does that, ends up with dust inside of the lens. It is one reason why you never buy a used point and shoot that can be put in a pocket unless there are clear views of the front element when extended and at max zoom with a light shining into the lens.
Razor2048 i sony case mine in pocket also the case despite its obscene price also can stay on and adds grip i like a camera in my pocket .smart phones don’t do it for me although love mobile pads screen for photo and vid so easy.
I just bought the a5100. Your great reviews influenced me. Keep up the good work thanks!
For many, the a5100 is a better option, purely due to the fact that it has interchangeable lenses.
And it’s got that nice huge sensor 👍
Mr Hist for what you get, A5100 is an mazing deal breaker.
But although I just wish the A6000 was slightly cheaper just because I want the view Finder and the extra hot-shoe.
totally agree, it gives so much versatility, i can use nice fullframe lenses on it for specific use, it's awesome
Actually the low light performance it was better on the RX100
I suppose its the aperture, 2.8 vs 3.5 of the 1650 kit lens (when both camera lenses are wide open) but then the 5100 is more forgiving i believe if you increase the iso to compensate.
If you put a low light lens (like sigma 16mm f1.4) it would crush the rx100
@@TheyCallMeJesse but then you would lose stabilization completely. Remember, there is no ibis in this camera..
@@ethaningoa7461 sony stabilisation is a joke anyway. Id rather have a great picture on a tripod than an average picture with ibis
@@TheyCallMeJesse yeah i cant carry that in my pocket XD, lack of stabilization means higher shutter speed and darker image...
What a helpful video, because I'm getting my first Sony Mirrorless to replace my old Sony WX500, so this helps me allot.
Thanks man.
Glad it was able to help!
Nice review Gary, that 5100 does a lot for it’s price! I like having interchangeable lenses so you can pick the best lens for you use. Again, thanks for the nice review!
The video is about 99% him talking and 1% showing image quality comparison
So what?
so true
Great comparison. I got turned of of Sony cameras when the first started the alpha line. Things have changed a lot. Nice to see how far they've come.
Great comparison I think for my needs I will get the a5100 in fact I already did thanks to your last video. Just got this for vlogging. Thanks for sharing
It’s like back to the future! 🤣
how about the audio?
Bro, nice review, very helpful because I'm just one step away from grabbing this camera, great job. Your footage is so crisp and clean if you do not mind what camera are you filming with?
i really enjoy using it to shoot vlogs and just talking to the camera about whatever, it's always fun :)

Why does nobody ever post photos taken by these cameras?
Great vid.. intro animation clip is a loud for my headphones compared to the rest of the vid
I'm rocking the a6000

I'm getting too addicted to this channel. I think something is wrong with me

What's a good budget camera that has a mic input?
What is the small camera backpack you see in the video?
I need help, I'm between a yi lite, akaso v50, and a akaso brave 5. Please tell me your opinion on which one is best.
I have 75 bucks for an action cam, what is a good option?
Did you buy anything?
Fast question Rx100 mark3 or A5100? :)
can you compare a SONY NEX-5R vs the Sony A5100 ?? pretty please!!
te quiero bro gracias
Hey I have a serious question that's no one really talks about.
Would it be beneficial to have a larger sensor with less MP or a smaller sensor with more MP
For example 16mp micro for third
Vs
20mp 1inch Sensor
I want to buy a camera which one do you recommend on a budget less than 400 dollars
Probably an open box a5100 👍
The Everyday Dad ok but can I use for UA-cam videos
I wouldn’t see why not. I would research the camera to make sure it’s a fit for you before buying it but I really enjoy it 👍
The Everyday Dad I’m sorry I ask a lot but you look like an expert at this so my next question is can I put it in a tripod and does it have mic input
No problem at all, yes it will fit on a tripod and no it doesn’t have a mic input.
audio is very low
Dk4K I think he says sort of messed his microphone. You can hear his voice noise.
Probably would have been a better comparison with an older model rx100
I think rx 100 iv is better📸
It is a darn good camera 👍
The Everyday Dad where do you live? Because i realise that u always upload video early in the morning in my country😄
Earth 👍
The Everyday Dad haha😂
I think steam engines and parasols are better
How is this not dave2d
I prefer the Panasonic Lumix DC-GX9 can hoy check ir?
Do canon 1300d vs g7x mark 2
I’ll have to keep that in mind thanks! 👍
Can you do the apeman a80 2018 action cam
Sony puts mic jack in the action cam, but not on the mirrorless and compact, wtf Sony?
A6400?
Your atudio shots often seem like they are out of focus. Maybe the lenses focusing needs calibration?
Or is it just me?
Do you know the official specs for this cameras Fiddlyness? I'm guessing it's typical Sony in the range of 96.2FDLY rating.
what! he paid $300? that is £234! Did you know in the uk this costs £350 on offer
Both are great Cameras.
Keep pushing that stone up that hill. 👍👍
Hmm i go for RX 100 iv
Nice comparisons! But both are way less good than your studio cam 😅
Hi you are awesome
Thanks so much!
Thanks a lot for creating this video! Absolutely amazing. I have been looking for a review that specifically compared these two cameras but couldn't find anything until your review. Have a cookie mate, Cheers :)
