    I have had the A5100 since 11/16. I throw it in my bag, it rattles around the truck and it still shoots like new. Since I got the samyang 12mm f2, sony 50mm1.8 and Sigma 30mm1.4, I hardly use anything else. I do miss an EVF sometimes. I have bought A6000 2 different times and returned both times. I will choose the touch screen over EVF every time. The touch screen helps make up for so few buttons. Also, the focus lever around the shutter button turns my old nikon, minolta and pentax fixed lenses into a bit of a zoom. The clearzoom is better that a standard digital zoom and the photos are excellent when zooming. I will buy another A5100 body before they disappear. And when I upgrade it will have to be something with a touchscreen like maybe an A6500. In spite of it's few compromises, this is still one of the best cameras on the market. Yeah, I said it.

    I have the a5100 and use it for my UA-cam channel. I love it. The small size is why you go mirrorless in the first place. Put the 20mm pancake on and throw it in your pocket. With the kit lens it also fits in your pocket. The 35mm too.
    The best part is the flip up screen for talking to camera. I would choose this camera over the 6000, 6300, 6500 for anyone who vlogs or shoots talking to camera. The still pics will look just as good as the more expensive 6000s too.

    i believe sony will very soon put out a new model for this camera. The reason to get the RX over this one for vlogging is that you can take it in concerts, live events etc where cameras with detachable lenses like this one are not permitted!

    I had the a5000 for about a year an half before switching to a Lumix G85 a couple months ago. There are things I miss about the Sony, and this video reminds me of them! The quality of these little Sony cameras is amazing.

      The AF doesn't bother me too much; I find it's fine almost all the time. I really love the video & handling of the G85, more so than the Sony. The a5000 just captured better stills (in my opinion), which I miss. But the G85 is a great camera for me, and it does almost everything well. There's always a trade-off!

    I've been using this camera extensively for the past 8 months coupled with a Sigma 30mm F1.4 and it's done very well for both stills and video. Overheating can be a concern when you record beyond 20 minutes in a warm environment. There is a way to use the LCD screen in bright daytime, set the screen settings to bright sunlight mode and it should be usable enough.

    Going on year 2 with this camera. It along with the 50mm f1.8 and 18-105 I have been working gigs for events and am gradually transitioning from free work to paid for gigs. The flash wasn't as much of a problem as I thought it might be granted it's my first "real camera." It can definitely be pushed beyond what many think. I've tried the A6000 multiple times, used it as a B camera for a couple shoots, and I actually prefer the focussing on this over that of the A6K. Keep up the great work man!

    I love mine. Bought one used about 1.5 years ago. It's great just great for portability. I actually take it skiing and cycling. It's just that bit less chunky than the A6XXX series and that means it does not get in the way. What I really want is an update to this camera with better focusing, sensor stabilization and a pop up EVF (like the RX cameras).

    I bought an a5100 a few months ago, for a b-cam. I have been pretty happy with it. Though i do miss the function menu from the a6000. Not having that, makes some adjustments a lot more involved. But over all, it's a great little camera, and it has become my go-to for macro work, because of it's compact size, small weight, as well as the flip up screen. :)
    I kept wanting to put my eye up to the non existing EVF the first few times i used it. This annoyance led me to get the Kamerar QV-1M viewfinder attachment for the screen. It does bulk the whole package up some, but i find it makes the camera a hundred times more useful when outside in the sun, and it provides an extra contact point, making for improved steadyness. It's easy to detach as well, which makes it a lot less of an annoyance to remove when it is not needed. :)
    If anyone decides to go a similar route, be sure to NOT get one of the cheap viewfinder options that attach with a frame and magnets on both the top and bottom of the screen, as placing a magnet near the top of the screen triggers the screen to turn the image upside down, making the viewfinder unusable. Just a small FYI for anyone who reads this. :)

    Hey, not sure if you remeber me and saying I was going to get the G-master 24-70 2.8 since nothing else was fast enough or gave the image quality it did. It was worth every penny. The images straight out of the camera are better than almost anything I could have done in post. I'm beyond impressed. And it essentially replaced $1500 in cheaper prime lenses, so the cost was balance a little more. If you're ever in SoCal, let me know.
    It's definitely big and bulky, so traveling recently made me think to bring along or not...but the images I just can't get over.

    • @ArthurR
      @ArthurR  7 років тому

      I wish I could personally justify the $2,200. Do you shoot professionally?

    • @kordtagley832
      @kordtagley832 7 років тому +1

      The price is what held me back for so long. But the serious lack of sharpness in my most previous purchase, 10-18($700), and your video's confirmation of it, made me finally make the jump.
      I bought it though my own amazon link, so I think of it as a small discount to feel better about it...haha.
      I shoot macro for products and light tent stuff locally. Not a full time gig, but gives me something to try and justify my photography obsessions in other areas. the 24-70 actually works really well for bigger products so far, but was really for vacations and to make my life look even better in photos. If you're ever in SoCal(HB) and want to take some shots with it, let me know.
      Thanks for all the reviews. Keep up the channel!

    When sony drop NEX series, they do something strange. Because nex-5t from 2013 almost the same camera. It has the same features: pdaf, wifi, nfc, touchscreen, 1080 60p. But it even smaller, has metall body and screen, that can rotate not only up and forward, but else 45 deegrees down. And it has FN button for quick access to 6 programmable functions.

  • @dsgregg

    You may not want to buy this camera. The author failed to mention that this camera has a massive overheating problem. The camera has a temperature sensor that will issue a warning at around 12 to 15 minutes depending on the ambient temperature and will shut off a few minutes after issuing that warning. The problem is commonly known and there are several youtube clips that discuss the issue and so far there is no acceptable solution. Any review of this camera should mention the overheating problem.

    • @ArthurR
      @ArthurR  7 років тому +7

      Yea, it really depends on the environment you are in. For example, I did the firmware update on my A6300, which raised the temperature threshold before shutdown, and while shooting a wedding video outside in 100 degree weather, it still overheated after 7-8 minutes. All of this can be solved by externally mounting the battery or using a battery grip.

      My statement stands. I'm not talking about the A6300. I'm talking about the A5100. It has a thermal management problem that Sony let out the door. If you like the camera, buy it. You will probably find a used one for a low price as there are a lot on the market because it ... drum roll please ... overheats. Lets keep it real.

    • @OrlandoStreets
      @OrlandoStreets 7 років тому +2

      Keeping it real. My a5100 doesn't overheat -- however, my 4K camera's do overheat. Both of them. My Sony 4K overheats at right around 23 minutes, regardless of environmental conditions, and my little Yi action cam overheats at various times, usually after 5-minutes of shooting in 4K. Just keeping it real. BTW, my fix for the overheating is to replace the battery. Works every-time (in the Sony, not the Yi).

    7:09 NEAT. also I want an a5100 bad, I currently use an rx100 mkV which is super great since a powerhouse that comfortable fits in your pocket but its slow mehcanical zoom and lack of audio-in makes me want a second camera. The rx100 5 can't keep up with my style of zooms that I use when I film video and thats a huge thing for me. The 5100 has been up for quite for some time now on the market, and knowing my luck I know the second I buy one, the 5200 will be announced.
    if not, then hopefully the mark 6 rx100 will come out and have said features plus interchangeable lenses

    I like to watch your videos and glad you looked into this little camera. I'm using this camera for a long time now. Unfortunately, except of the sensor and the codec for video, it is more of a downgrade to the older Nex-5t. Less buttons for customization. no electronic level. worse grip. no tilting down of the screen. no way to attach electronic viewfinder. The Nex-5t was a better camera. Thank you for the advice. Let me ask you this. Why do you think the 35mm is so much more than the 50mm?

    • @ZipporahAanael
      @ZipporahAanael 7 років тому

      Dudley Delcamp to be honest it's only because I mistakenly got the 50FE. It has no image stabilizer and neither does my A6300 so no bueno. It's also very noisy when focusing and not as quick. If I got he APS-C version I may feel differently. The 35 is faster and virtually noiseless so it can't be heard in my UA-cam readings like the 50. And the 35 is fully compatible with my A6300. The 50FE is great for studio use on a tripod or a full frame with image stabilization. Also the 35 focal length is more versatile especially when my 50 becomes a 75mm of on my sensor (which I love for product shots though!).

    Very hard to get in the UK. My theory is that the A6000 was such a popular camera Sony prioritized that over the A5100. A5100 has a few more video features than the A6000 too. Wish it had 'Deep' colour profile but that's all I miss from A6300/A7R.

    I have what I assume is a predecessor to this camera, the NEX-5T and what I really miss from the Canon DSLR I had before it is a viewfinder. I am surprised you did not knock points off for this missing feature in the a5100. In bright sunlight, it is almost impossible to see the LCD screen.

    Just bought one, actually two, I blame my girlfriend for that ;-), for just that, Vlogging.
    Haven't started using it that much yet but for video, great!
    But for taking pictures, not sure, I'm used to Canon so I have to relearn a little, and I only have the kit lens, 16-50 and 50-210, so I guess the quality isn't the best, but still testing.
    Waiting for more reviews from you, hope you can test the new Samyang lineup of the AF lenses, 14, 35 and 50mm. :-)
    Great work!

    the fact that the a6000 lacks a flip out screen, touch screen and even 4k when the Panasonic g7 has all of that at the same price is crazy. Sony really needs to update the features.

    • @ArthurR

      The issue with the Panasonic G7 is that every review talks about how horrible the autofocus is. Right now, nothing beats Sony AF for video.

      This camera doesn't shoot 4k. It does overheat after 25+ minutes of NON-STOP video recording.
