I’m sure you don’t remember, but you were the first artist to inspire me to start watercolor painting. I conversed with you a few times and you were so incredibly genuine and insightful with your hints as to what I should look for next and most importantly, what to watch out for...you took the time to help me whilst inspiring me. Thank you, Jean. I used to live in Santa Rosa, CA. I’m trying to get back to the desert now. Arizona is my town. Jess xox
It's very inspiring and uplifting to know I have influenced someone on their watercolor journey. Thanks so much for the lovley comment. Arizona has some wonderful scenery for you to paint.
Ooops. I have several colors but want to add two or three more. The only permensnt mauve ive found is WN, DS has duocrome mauve quite different. Your mauve is magnificent. Please confirm it is WN. Thank you so much. Im also goint to check your online courses. Best.
So glad to have found you. Your style and technique are what I've been looking for! I just subscribed to Skillshare just for your classes. Thank you so much for sharing your beautiful art with the world!
Hi Faye. So glad you stopped by. I do also have my courses at watercolors.jeanlurssen.com/ where you will only have to pay a one-time fee instead of a monthly fee.
@@JeanLurssen Oh wonderful thank you! I'm so excited. I've tried to learn a very loose almost abstracted style of watercolor before from other teachers but it seemed so difficult, and hard to understand. You explain everything so well and simplify it, so it's actually attainable! Thank you so much :-)
This is awesome information that I have wanted to know but dreaded going through all my paint colors to determine on my own. I can't thank you enough for this. I've made notes about your list to guide me on future purchases.
I love this and I love granulation! I have several from Daniel Smith but there are quite a few that you have that I don’t. It was fun to see them! You should really check out DS green apatite genuine. It is beautiful and one of my favorite! If you look at the bottom of your painting just to the left of the center there is a beautiful unicorn. 😁🥰
Yes I forgot to mention that. I use a lot of W&N granulation medium. It's creates wonderful granulation also on acrylic inks which I use sometimes in my watercolors.
This is a great video, thank you Jean. DS Moonglow and Lunar Black are also spectacular. They write about Moonglow: "Watch and wait as Anthraquinoid Red floats, Ultramarine Blue settles and Viridian grays the resulting violet color. Selectively blot and lift a surface wash to expose delicate blue-greens." On Lunar Black: Imagine a transparent black with an expansive value range and pigment particles that react like magnetic shavings attracting and repelling each other. Unique pigment properties make Lunar Black a radically reticulating color. When dry, a Lunar Black wash resembles a marbled moonscape." I find it to be fantastic for rocks.
I do have lunar black and moonglow. I actually use a lot of Moonglow. It was difficult to decide which colors to feature. I could have gone on for much longer but didn't want to make the video too long.
Have you tried Piemontite Genuine? If you love granulating colors, I feel Piemontite has some beautiful granulation. Also, on my monitor, it loosely reminds me of the Permanent Brown that you used in this video. I do love most of the Primatek colors. And for some reason, it makes me happier when I get to paint with a real mineral. Cheers from New Orleans.
hi Jean, thanks for another lovely video. i love the bleak colour in the right lower corner and i was wondering which Cerulean you're using, since Daniel Smith has a regular Cerulean and a Chromium. thank you!
That was fun to watch! Those are very interesting colors. I think they would be great for the type of watercolors I do, like, landscapes. Question: Do tubes of watercolor paint have any indication on them as to how well they move in water, on paper? I have experimented a bit and there are some that push other colors away, and others that flow real quickly in the water. The permanent brown looks like my acrylic burnt sienna, which I love to mix with blues, or purples, for either a very dark color or a neutral. Thanks for the very informative video!
I’ve been searching for DS “permanent mauve” but it seems impossible to find? I find “permanent violet” but not mauve?? Please, where can I buy Permanent Mauve?
If you go to the Winsor and Newton Website, they do identify many colours that are granulating. Not perfect, but certainly there. ST means staining, G means granulating. www.winsornewton.com/na/paint/watercolour/professional-watercolour/ and scroll down. When you see the colour swatches, click on the colour, and along the side it will give the specs.
Hi Jean, I tried to purchase Permanent mauve, by Daniel Smith but they don't make it, however, Winsor Newton does, it that what you used in this video? D/S makes a Duochrome Mauve that is granulating. I purchased a Permanent Violet to use in this video but it doesn't granulate, I should have checked the D/S website first! :(. Thank you.
Hi, i saw all your videos and i am very interested about granulation. I use a lot of watercolours that granulate but i would like ask you a question: i saw a lot of painting with an extreme granulation. I use also medium winsor & newton but i don’t understand how reach extreme level of granulation. Can you explain me? Sorry for bad english
Hi Cecilia. It is a Winsor & Newton color. I have all the materials listed below this video if you click on "show more," but here is a link to the W&N colors where you will find the permanent mauve bit.ly/2xl85pX
I’ve added Lunar Black to none granulating colors. Soooo pretty.. try it.
Even your color testing swatches look like works of art. Wonderful brush strokes.

Thanks for teaching us these tricks!
It was a beautiful painting. I loved the power of the colorful palette.
If I had to choose only one UA-cam channel to watch it’d be yours! Thanks for sharing.
You made my day Melissa. Thank you.
I love lunar blue, mayan blue and rose of ultramarine
Your demeanor is very calming :)
Gorgeous colors!
thank you
beautiful!
What I love about your style of painting is that it feels like a warm up because there is no pressure and yet the results are stunning.
Thank you Ma. Chona Mendoza.
Hi Jean. Thanks as always for your videos!!!
I notice how the cerulean blue just literally pushes the other colors right out of the way! Very interesting! Thank you so much for this !
Beautiful
I am also a lover of granulation and also create a small palette.

Wow! Interesting colors and I LOVE that granulation. Thanks for sharing with us. 💖
Lovely voice. I could listen to you all day. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks so much for the lovely comment.
Stunning
Love your work and the way you use colours. Wonderful. Thank you
Such fun! Great
Such gorgeous colors! Thanks!
Beautiful as always Jean! I see a few new colours I must get 😊
Great information. I just placed an order for Permanent Mauve, among a few others.
Awesome as always! Now I have a few more colors I need to buy :)

Thank you for your excellent instruction. Granulation is a very exciting way to get more texture into my work.
Thank you. Wonderful site. Would be nice if you could show your water container and how you use.
loved your demo, love the granulated colors as well. Keep up the lovely work!

marvellous!! there is a Granulating medium by Winsor en Newton which helps a lot granulating your colours

Very interesting Thank you
Wonderful, thanks!
Regarding granulation colors, can you speak to any cautions one should take when using them, due to their contents?
So glad I found you. Love your work and we live very close. I’m on the Penisula.
I'm glad you found me too Phyllis. I'm in Sausalito.

Love your color swatches, actually like clouds. I will be adding that lunar blue and the permanent brown to my daniel smith set.

oh and, hematite genuine is also a very interesting and beautiful granulating paint. i think you'd love it for landscapes.
Hi Kim. It's te regular cerulean blue PB35.

Unfortunately Rosemary the tubes don't indicate how the colors react but if you checkout the descriptions on Daniel Smith they are quite detailed.
@@JeanLurssen I bought their color dab sheets. It was very enlightening :) I bought more of their paint and am looking forward to trying them out!
Sorry. Pressed downward thumb by accident. I really appreciate this site! Thanks for the information!
Permanent Mauve looks amazing, I can't find it on the Daniel Smith website though. Please help.
Problem solved. Saw another comment.
Hi Lena love your work, on which kind of board do you attach the paper?
I’ve been searching for DS “permanent mauve” but it seems impossible to find? I find “permanent violet” but not mauve?? Please, where can I buy Permanent Mauve?
What brush are you using?
It's a Silver Black Velvet #12 round. I added a link below the video. Just click on "show more"
Daniel Smith does not have a permanent mauve-is that Windsor and Newton?
HI Anne, yes it is a Winsor & Newton color as I mentioned in the comments area below the video.
If you go to the Winsor and Newton Website, they do identify many colours that are granulating. Not perfect, but certainly there. ST means staining, G means granulating.

It is a W&N color Barbara. I always list the materials below the videos with links to where you can purchase.
Enjoyed the granulated paint demo...did you use a stretched watercolour paper on a frame?
I never stretch my watercolor paper. Only tape it down to a board.
I can't find any colour called "Permanent Mauve" on the Daniel Smith website....Is it called another name, or from another company? thanks Janis
It's by Winsor & Newton. Here is a link. www.dickblick.com/products/winsor-and-newton-professional-watercolor-tubes/
Hello Jean
Do you think it is easier to see the granulation effect with the hot paper than with the cold paper ?
Some artists say granulation works better on cold press paper but I have no problem with granulation on hot press paper.
Thank you Jean !
Was the permanent mauve a Daniel Smith color? I can't find it listed. Their permanent violet is non-granulating.
So sorry Kathee, it is a Winsor & Newton color. Here is a link www.dickblick.com/products/winsor-and-newton-professional-watercolor-tubes/
Were you using granulation medium instead of water?
I used granulation medium. sometimes I also add a little water afterward to make the colors flow and break up.
After adding granulation medium you can move the paper back and forth to get the paint to granulate and run down the paper. Hope this helps.
Oh, and look just up from the unicorn and there is a beautiful duck looking bird. 😂
Hello Jean! I’ve searched for the Permanent Mauve on Daniel Smith’s site, but can’t find it?
Hi Cecilia. It is a Winsor & Newton color. I have all the materials listed below this video if you click on "show more," but here is a link to the W&N colors where you will find the permanent mauve bit.ly/2xl85pX
Hi Jean....thank you so much for this. So interesting to see the effect of all those colors. What paint brush were you using? 😊😊😊
HI Annabel. I was using one of my favorite Silver Black Velvet brand of brushes.
@@JeanLurssen Thanks Jean. Round brush? Mop? I'm not really up on my brushes!! :-)
@@annabelmarsh5613 It's a #12 round brush.
@@JeanLurssen Thanks, Jean. Have a GREAT day!
Jean, is that a hot press block or a pad. Is it Arches? Thank you
Hi Francine. I used Arches hot pressed paper - not a pad, a loose sheet. I have a link to the supplies under the video. Hope this helps.
@@JeanLurssen What size are you using in the video. Sorry don't mean to be a nudge. Thank you. P.S. I ordered more inks!!!
@@francinetjones1814 It was probably 8"x10" I think.
like! Great work, very good alternative, very good video, L+ S
Lol, you kicked Rose of Ultramarine to the curb …😂
