For maximum granulation and color separation, I recommend rough press paper and painting with salt water. Just add a lot of salt to warm water, dissolve the salt, let it cool, and then paint with it. This works with cold press too. You can get even non-granulating paints to do marvelous things with salt water.
Thanks for the tip.
I need to try this!
Yeah, cool tip. And also, I think it would be good to rinse your brushes well with clean water afterwards. Especially with expensive and favourite brushes.
Will salt hurt the hair on the brush??
Wash it thoroughly with plain water when you're done. It's done no damage to any of my brushes.
I just love the clarity and simplicity of your presentation. The gentle pace. The page filling the screen. No-frills, no music or other distractions. Focused, sharp close-ups showing details. Clear, informative narration & visual demonstration. Your soothing voice. This video was a joy to watch! Thank you sooo much!
Ahh this is such a nice comment. Thank you. Framed it and hung above my bed ;)
@@myfantasticalimaginarium1890 Awww, thank you too! I've gone all warm n fuzzy now (eek!). This has to be the BEST response I have ever had to any comment I have ever made on any channel ANYWHERE ever! I am now complete. 😊
I'm a very inexperienced beginner and just purchased a small set of what I considered expensive watercolors. My first time playing with them I had a lot of granulation, which was disappointing because I thought there was something wrong with them. Your video helped me to understand that my new paints are not defective, but actually have a characteristic unique to watercolor that I didn't even know existed. Now I'm even more excited about them! Thank you for your video! 💜
Hey kara that's such a recognizable feeling. You probably have some great watercolors on your hands ❤️ enjoy!
I had the opposite exp! I tossed a bunch of cheap tubes bc I thought the granulation was a result of that. Its helpful to know. But I admit- I don't like it all! For abstract work- okay cool. But I don't want my landscapes doing that. The sky doesn't do that! Blooms are cool though.
This is a great video for us newbies exploring paints. I learned so much & subscribed to your channel. Thank you so much! ❤❤❤
Yea it's actually considered beautiful. Glad your quality pigments help you.
Some paints do that and some don't. If you get a good brand they'll be colors in the mix that don't granulate at all and some that do. And some colors just by Nature have a tendency to granulate regardless of the brand. Like if I recall correctly ultramarine is generally pretty granulating and hansa Yellow rarely is
Just to add to the conversation, common granulating colors are ultramarine blue, Earth colors like burnt sienna, yellow ochre and burnt umber.
So if you cannot invest in specific specialty paints atm, you can experience a lot of fun with these.
Also, paynes grey and sepia are fairly active and fun.
Also I believe PBK11 black is magnetic and moves a lot and interestingly can be added in tiny amounts to pinks, purples and greens to create the popular “dusk” colors some manufacturers are selling lately.
Having watched a lot of watercolor content in youtube for years, i have to say this is probably the most beautiful way to showcase granulation, while explaining it very well. I have been into granulating pigments for a year and to be honest it totally changed the way i work. Love your spooky painting!
Aaw thnx magenta!! Next week Ill share the painting process of the spooky painting for halloween, stay tuned 👻
@@myfantasticalimaginarium1890 thank you, that would be lovely to watch, and a learning experience ^_^
I agree. I have been watching a lot about granulation on UA-cam. This was beautifully done! The filming, editing and explanations. Bravo!
It would be interesting to get a comparison of naturally granulating pigments with pigments made to granulate with a granulating medium.
That's a good idea Dahl, I'll look into that :)
I just had to say this is beautiful.
The effect that I would have thought before was a major problem turned out to be a hidden wonder. In the right composition it could transform something ordinary into a magical wonder. The idea springs to mind of granite rocks.
Thank you for opening my eyes to a new experience.
This is such a heartfelt comment David, thank you! So great that you've found a new appreciation of grannulation in your watercolors and I hope it will help you on your artistic journey. Granite rocks are a great example of putting the granulating properties of watercolors to good use!
I love the name of your channel! I’m new here & was attracted to the name. Thank you for sharing this information with us.
Your tutorial helped me to completely understand the concept of granulation. Adding examples of how it can be used is so helpful and inspiring. Thanks for a great video. Keep posting!💙🌵
Thanks for letting me know it helped you, definitely motivates me to keep at it :)
I enjoyed the HECK outta this video. So glad I clicked on it. For many years I've been using acrylics almost exclusively, but in my youth, I used watercolors. And in art school I took several watercolor classes. But there wasn't any talk of granulation that I remember. I know about it, but this video knocks it outta the park!!
Daniel Smith and Schmincke are both just great brands to use. I hope to get back into watercolors more, especially after watching your awesome video.
Holy cow Robert, so glad ypu decided to drop this comment here today :) very inspiring to read that it has reignited that watercolor option for you.
Best video explaining granulation. I have been looking unsuccessfully for information on how to make the separation of pigment more prominent. Your explanation and demonstration on adding water is spot on! Thank you very much.
So glad to be able to help in your artistic process. 😊
Tundra violet is my favourite too....forest green is starting too.
Well done! I may just have to track down that Schmincke Tundra Violet. Thank you!
My pleasure! Have fun painting ^^
An excellent explanation with perfect examples. Also, yours is one of the best speaking voices of all the channels I subscribe to. Thank you.
Ah thank you so much Sally!
Just the explanation I needed today - I've been experimenting with granulation and finding it difficult to "manage" . . . . wonderful tips here! Thank you!
Thank you Cathy :) happy to help
You gave a Good Explanation, on Granulation. Just the info I’ve been looking for 🤗THANK YOU!
I love granulating watercolours. I adore Daniel Smith's paints. I recently purchased Rose of Ultramarine and now have to go play with it.! Wonderful video with lots of helpful tips. My husband has created an advent calendar for me. He started it with Schminke SG tubes! Pardon me while I go play with my paints.
That is such an awesome gift!! Where do we find men like him? haha, I wish you all the fun playing with your paints
Fantastic video... your camera angle is perfect... thank you for the video. I love granulating colours. Take care
Thank you so much for the kind words :) have a great day!
I'm trying to curate several different colors to use in landscape painting but affordability is an issue with me so I can only buy one every couple months. I do love the effect.
This is the best video I have ever seen about gratulating watercolors. Thank you so much !
Great video! Granulating paints are so versatile! I personally use them to paint shadows in my portrait paintings, I love the texture and separation they provide in mixes.
Thank you Marina. Granulating paints are great for getting those interesting shadows in a paintig! Although I can also really enjoy just an abstract swatch of a paint that has that nice separation of colors.
Tundra violet reminds me so much in colour of it's inky twin, Quink Ink!
I have never worked with that but I'm Quink to believe it ;)
What a comprehensive, fully loaded video. Thank you! 🙏☺️ I never knew you could lift out the top layer of pigments on multi-pigment granulating paints. So interesting and I can't wait to try it! Alvaro Castagnet recommends using Daniel Smith's Lunar Black to achieve moody, textured shadows in your pieces. I love using the Daniel Smith Cascade Green mixed with a little Ultramarine Blue for turbulent ocean waves or underwater plants.
Thank you for showing me how to revel in the properties of granulating paint, instead of fighting it!
I absolutely love granulating watercolours which I have none; but will be ordering soon!
Thank you for the most informative video of granulating paint out there! Just beautiful. I have to get a tube of tundra violet.
Wow what a lovely compliment, thank you Jennifer! And I totally know what you mean, that tundra violet is a stunner 🤩
Sometimes I like to return to this video because quite frankly, it’s one of the best and most soothing watercolour videos out there. Mmmmm, granulating paints 🥰
This is the best video about granulation and explaining it I've seen. Very well put together!
Wow that's a great compliment 😊 thank you!
Excellent! Excellent! video...Thank you for doing this.
Happy to help, great to read that you enjoyed it :)
Nice video about granulation. Thanks! It's so beautiful just to see them flow and change...
I totally agree! The flow and change in and of itself is such an oddly satisfying thing.
Thank you! Amazing!
Wow! Ive heard of granulating paint, but only used context clues to imagine what they were. I imagined they'd produce the same effect as adding salt to watercolors. It's very intriguing to see what they're actually about. I can imagine the Tundra Violet would be perfect for making storm clouds & the Rose of Ultramarine may work well in my blood cell paintings.
Thanks for making this video. It was nice stumbling upon it a 3am.
Edit: I'm very curious about how these mix with one another, non granulating paint & metallics.
I am a beginner, probably I have a long way to try these but I am watching everything I can, that I find interesting now. Thank you so much for this video. Your explanation is very clear and clean, and the visual quality is superb. The best camera work I have seen here so far.
Ah thank you so much! Really made my day ❤
Extremely helpful !
I had no idea of the possibilities!
Glad it helped!
Spot on, just what I have been looking for, the 'knowledge' you have gained from experience, thank you so much for sharing it with us.
You're very welcome ☺️ was my first informative video so I'm so glad it's of use :)
Great explanation, thank you SO much
Welcome!
Tundra violet and Glacier green wow just WOW New subscriber here 🇦🇺🦘 I don’t know how I haven’t found you sooner.
Hey Rhonda, so glad you joined the club 😊 happy to have you ☺️
Great video! Love the time lapse drying!
Thank you so much. I really like reading what you think :)
Amazing video! Thank u so much, girl! 🥰
So welcome!
How is your voice so peaceful, pure and gentle, and your art so dark and challenging haha
What a useful video! Thanks so much for the information
My pleasure Marija :)
Very helpful! Also, your voice is pleasantly soothing. I actually added this video to my "Help me relax" Playlist! 😊
Ahh that's such a compliment! Thanks for adding this to the great playlist :)
BEST VIDEO EXPLAINING 'GRANULATION' !!!!!!!!!!!!
This was SO helpful! Thanks for sharing x
You are so very welcome!
Fabulous explanations and examples, thanks!
I’m new to watercolor but I saw these super granulating paint and just bought the first two sets I’m going to buy all of the sets. I also yesterday saw that there are 3new sets coming out very soon. I can’t wait to get them too but I would love to get more videos about these kind of granulated paints and techniques for using them.
Your comment made me check the jacksons site again and you are right! New super granulating ranges coming out, can't wait!! althoug, my wallet wouldn't mind a break haha. If I get any new granulating paints I'll be sure to share :)
Wow, just, WoW! I'm impressed. It's so informational, it's beautiful, and lovely swatches❤ hope this gets more views
Aw thnx Joseph. So glad you like it :)
Very helpful. Thank you!
:)
I never heard of this. Thank you.
a most soothing tone
Excellent explanation and demonstration 👏🏻👏🏻👌thank you so much. 🥰
❤️
This tutorial has been invaluable……and will add more tubes to my collection 😁 Thank you so much.
Thank you for your kind comment Mrs Dee :)
Luv this video. Do u have more recommendations on granulating colours?❤
Ah thanks! I have more videos on the granulating paints I own so maybe you could check those out? (this one for example: ua-cam.com/video/3cRnSJURsZQ/v-deo.html)
Love your videos!! I also love the brush you used in this video with its lovely sharp point. What is it ( if you don’t mind)
Thank you!
What a wonderful and helpful guide to the many characteristics of granulation! Thank you! 🙏🏻 QUESTION: is DS Moonglow the only fugitive color in this demonstration? I'm only using mine in sketchbooks now, after seeing drastic fading.
Great video, thanks for sharing!!
Thank you!
Thank you, I just love to look watercolors do their thing.
Yes it is so satisfying, it always inspires me to try more abstract pieces.
Love this video! Subscribed immediately. Great information presented very professionally. I remember the first time I witnessed granulating watercolor. I was watching a video over at The Mind of Watercolor channel. Steve laid down wet on wet, some of the Tundra Violet and I literally gasped at its beauty. I couldn’t believe my eyes. I still have to get some, but it is a budget challenge, however it is on my list to get some Schminke Tundras, and Daniel Smith when I can. Thank you for sharing. Blessings to you!
This is a lovely comment, thank you Rita! And don't break the bank over paints, it should be a stress relieving hobby, not stress inducing haha. I might make a video about making your own granulating mixes in the future, to save some money but also to make the exact colors you want.
@@myfantasticalimaginarium1890 Ooo…I love that idea for a video. I’ll be watching for that one. Got my bell notifications on for your channel. I kinda thought there might be a way to DIY some granulating watercolor. Thank you in advance for sharing your knowledge. Blessings to you!
Another great job of presenting.
This is a very beautiful video. I love how you show how we can work with the granulating properties at the end of the video; its very beautiful and mesmerising.
Thank you so much :)
Great explanation of granulating colors. I enjoyed this video a lot.
Thank you Outsider, your positive comment truly made my day brighter. Glad you found the the video helpful and enjoyable 🙂
Lovely.....thank you!
Welcome 🤗
I loved the video! How lightfast are these colours? I read somewhere that Moonglow (DS) is fugitive but are the others? I will be rewatching this simy to see again how beautiful these paints are!
Great video, thank you!
Welcome!
Great video! I love granulation!
Same!!
Thank you, the video is very helpful.
Glad it was helpful!
I learned so much from this video. Thank you for amazing content.
Very informative. Thank you!
My pleasure :) glad you enjoyed it :)
Good info to know, thanks!
thanks!
Very nice demostration
Thanks so much 🙏
Merci beaucoup ! Très utile !♥️👍
I was just researching this more since the new Rebelle 5 software simulates it a bit. Your real world examples are amazing.
Thanks! I'm unfamiliar with thd software but it sounds cool that they have a simulation for granulation.
Really enjoyed this video. TYSM. Q: what does the word “genuine” mean in the name Green Apatite Genuine?
Thank you, this looks amazing
Thank you Susan 🤗
Thanks for making this video. I’m off to buy all of the paints you mention as I just love what you have achieved, but I am sure it’s going to take lots of practice to get right. Would you also share the details of the paper and brush you used to make this little bit of watercolour magic. Thanks
Thank you for your kind comment Jan. I hope you have a wonderful experimental art journey ahead of you with your granulating paints :). I would be happy to share the paper and brush with you but my answer depends on which part of the video you want the details mentioned. Could you specify?
@@myfantasticalimaginarium1890 thanks so much for taking the time to reply. I just love the way you have painted the demonstrations of the paint granulating, never seen anything like that before! So I guess I mean when you are making the paint do different things, especially the Tundra Violet and lunar black. Can’t wait to experience this myself. 😉
This is a superb video that really gets to the juicy aspect of granulating paints. Thank you, I'll be doing some experimenting with these techniques.
I have several Daniel Smith granulating paints and I recently bought 5 half-pans of the new Schmincke supergranulation paints. So I've got plenty to play with 😄
What do you think of using granulation medium to get similar affects with non-granulating paints or enhancing paints that already have granulation?
Curious to know how the experimentation went for you Mark. I do own granulation medium but haven't found it to give me the effects I desire. I still need to find the time to experiment further with it since I find it hard to believe the effect I've gotten is the only possible one. Hoping to find time soon.
Absolutely wonderful video ! Love to watch how you achieve amazing results. I am going to experiment more. I use stillman and birn alpha sketchbook and I am wondering if I can achieve those texture effects on it.
Thanks Valérie :) experimentation is so lovely and relaxing, no pressure to create something specific. I haven't used the sketchbook you mentioned but let me know how that goes :).
New sub. Thank you for explaining granulation in a practical way! 🥰✍🏽🎨🖼️👩🎨
Happy to have you :)
Are you on a YT break? Or have you gone to another plat form?
Are you on a YT break? Or have you gone to another platform?
@@BrazenSpirituality hey Brazen, I've been on a YT break because life needed me present :) I have been feeling the need to create content more lately so there is a good chance I will pick YT back up soon. If there is something in particular you'd like me to make a video on, let me know, it will help get me back in the swing of things ;)
Really helpful! Thank you! The tundra violet and glacier green are stunning!! I own most of the Daniel smith ones you featured but I didn’t even know about those shmincke ones! I need to get myself those colors ASAP
So glad it's helpful c j :) Those schmincke super grannuating paints are sooo nice but be warned: risk of wanting to buy more is high ;)
There are videos from artists that have given color combinations to use with Daniel Smith colors to match Schmincke’s offerings. The combos are made from two colors that are both granulating. I’ve been able to come close enough for me with a few desired combos. Give them a try, unless you have unlimited funds😄
@@jmoss55ish I am so far from unlimited funds lol. Those shmincke colors are waaay out of my budget. So that’s actually such good info! Thank you!! What exactly would I search? Or do you remember any of the artists/UA-camrs who did the videos by chance?
I need those paints. Look how gorgeously they change color like chameleon.
What brush are you using? Nice and pointed.
It's the 'Winsor & Newton Artists'Water Colour Sable' pointed round in size 8 😊
I've seen an artist ,Jean haines, create a diy granulation medium.could you do a video on a diy gran.fluid
This is a good idea. I haven't really found a gran. medium to give me the effect I've been looking for so I'm really trying to find time to experiment properly to make a video that had all the right info for you.
Lovely thank you!
You are so welcome!
Great video! Thank you💕 New subscriber 🇧🇷
Thank you! So good to have you :)
Can we define granulation as different from sedimentation.
Yes we definitely can! It is sediment on a small scale which creates this effect.
Beautiful!
Thank you ☺️
Thank you for the video ! :)
Really interesting thank you
Your brush I like ❤️
Your videos are true watercolor asmr )) Can I ask what is that superb looking brush that you are using?
Thank you so much 😀that's a good question and I had to really look at the video and my brushes to find out but I've got the answer!! It's my 'Winsor & Newton Artists'Water Colour Sable' pointed round in size 8 😊
@@myfantasticalimaginarium1890 Thank you very much! I`ve seen that brush online and it`s much more affordable than series 7. Yours looks great to me, I love the point, by the look of the ferrule it looks well used to me, but I can`t really know that. I lost the point on my DaVinci Harbin, and I took care of that brush.. I wonder do you use it longer now and how do you like it? If you find the time to answer, that would be great)) In any case, thank you ))
Sorry for the late reply, I couldn't find your reply anymore after I read it :( The ferrule does look well used but I haven't had it for years. I've had this brush for about six months and I really like it. It holds a lot of water but still comes to a very fine point for details. So Yeah, I'd recommend it but I cant be sure there isn't a cheaper alternative that would also suit your needs in the short term (6 months). I would expect this to hold up a lot better for longer comparing to cheaper alternatives. We will have to see how it holds up in the future. I do also recommend this brush in my 'watercolorists wishlist 2021' that I made for the holidays. It will be up later today.
Thanks so helpful
Yay, so welcome!
Well done!
Thank you so much Janice :)
Nice video !
I love the example of the creepy guy. Great explanation of granulation!
Thanks Gurbs!! The creeper is one of my faves atm :)
Are certain paint pigments just more granulating in general, or are you using a granulating formulation? I’m a beginner with watercolor, so very interested in all of its amazing properties.
Some pigments are more granulating in general. In this video I'm not using anything but the paint and the water. I have a series coming up for the watercolor beginner so follow along if you'd be interested in those videos.
I usual smile slyly and look away into the distance to cover up how little I know 😏
I'm just starting out will granulated water colors. I would like to start with yellow red blue What would you suggest there to purchase them
Hey Nancy, do you mean you would like to get a granulating version of a yellow, red and a blue? For the granulating blue a French Ultramarine would be a good pick. True yellow and reds don't often come in granulating forms so you would have to look into a more earthy red like Potters Pink. The closest thing I've seen to a granulating yellow would be the Tundra Orange by Schmincke. I hope I understood your question correctly, if I didn't please let me know so I can give you the answer you're looking for.
Pretty please...clearly identify the brand, color, etc of the products used in your videos below.
Hey Moina,
I added the specifics about the paints in the desciption, which extra information would you like? If you can specify I'll get back to you asap!
Ok before watching this video I have to say I don’t get granulation! To me it is a flaw in the paint pigment, and not what I come to watercolor for! I don’t get why it’s a fad right now, and being a mostly nature-oriented artist I can’t think of too many uses for it: I want my water smooth and transparent, and my skies and my clouds too. Maybe in a rugged wild field or grassland I could see using it but not the entire picture. It’s like in a drink where all the impurities settle to the bottom of the glass--yuck, I don’t want to see that! Ok now I’ll watch your video.
Hahaha clearly stated!
I subscribed and liked your video. I’ve actually been painting missing my own colors from my favorites and I’m playing with the interesting textures customizing the granulation. I hope you by and check it out and perhaps do another video creating your own colors as well.
Raspberries!
They grow on trees in the Bahamas you know?🤓
