Edit: yes, more than a year later people are still correcting me that she is missing a hand not an arm
no i will not change it

My sister is a recently retired occupational therapist, mostly hands. She told me when they made hands for children that looked more human, flesh colored, like the one you show, other kids found it "creepy", were afraid. But when they had hands that were more mechanical, brightly colored plastics, etc, suddenly they are super heroes! The kids in their class gathered around, "Oh, COOL!" And the kids were curious how it worked, etc. Interesting.

As she said in the video they werent sure how she was going to deal with the amputation. Ghost limbs cause a real problem for many amputees. Temporsry prostetics is one way to deal with it.
That said this video is 2 years old and quite a bit has rolled out in even just the last 2 years.

To equal out the length I would have switched from the post and socket thing they have going on there to a twist and lock cup that goes right over the stump at least. You're definitely right, this is a crude co-opting of the standard hook design into a hand by someone who doesn't have the skills to design or fabricate either. They probably limited themselves to using her current arm socket rather than making a whole new one from the ground up as well.

Everything is about money. How many people are amputee and how many of them are willing to pay for a prosthetic ? And how much are they willing to pay ? After you answer those question you realise that the market is very small. Because the market is small, the prices are high and the technology isn't that advanced.

Since the arm piece was so big I thought it was a myoelectric arm, where you use the signals in your arm muscles to open and close the hand. So I was chocked to see you needed a shoulder piece to be able to do that. I have only seen that in amputees of the humerus. Also, I don't know how it is in the states, but we in Scandinavia can order cosmetic hands from France, they hand paint their cosmetic hands and are really individual made and they are all a piece of art. Yes they are more expensive, but for the patients quality of life it's so much worth it. I understand why you don't want to wear that

Aha, the comment I was looking for so I could reply!
Some lady at work got ahold of a creepy clear plastic hand with visible bones inside. It was from some osteo pharmaceutical company. She quit one day and I nabbed it. MINE! And it was a right hand too. Convenient.
Sorry I can't find an actual pic of what I'm describing. Basically it looked like an X-ray come to life. It's made of hard clear plastic with regular looking bones inside (plastic I'm sure). It's close to this.
      prod-images-static.radiopaedia.org/images/3701045/1bc2bbf6dce925b58521c64933b58a_jumbo.jpg
So I'm wearing this long-sleeved shirt and I started fooling around with using a rubber band to keep the sleeve closed. I then slipped the fake hand into my sleeve to see how it looked. It was a bit longer like Kristie's left hand, but if I angled myself a bit I could hide the difference. It was a bit smaller than my normal hand too, but kinda close.
Just as I was getting the hang of it, a big shot manager for one of the companies came through for a visit. I'd seen him before from a distance but we never actually met.
      Tee hee.
Someone introduced me to him and I shook hands with him real quick. Managers are used to shaking hands all day. I made him shake hands with my super creepy clear plastic hand with bones inside.
He made a slightly weird face, because it obviously didn't feel like a real hand. He glanced down for a moment and then looked away. He was afraid to say anything because he thought it was a prosthetic or something.
I acted as natural as could be and welcomed him to the office, stuff like that. He never said a word.
This is a great grinchy trick for Halloween or something. People don't expect that, especially if I'm wearing baggy pants with big pockets and can hide that hand in my pocket until the last second. Nobody wants to be the guy who notices it, because then they look stupid. It's not PC to notice.

This video brought so much memories about my grandfather! 30 years ago
mechanism was almost the same. He used his prosthetic most solely for
driving, his car had manual transmission.

The neighbor who I worked with fishing in the Ohio river lost his hand at 7-8 years old in the 1920's. He was 75 in 1996. He would bait multi-hook fishing lines with one hand and his stump. He'd work his boat while putting out hooks in a river with one hand and his stub. He worked in law enforcement, hunting, being a mechanic on his (manual) jeep, with one hand. He would lace-up 11" boots and his WW1 style snake protectors, with long laces and multiple boot hook eyelets with one hand. I still lace up my boots the same way (one hand) because my dad worked the river with him at 14-16 before I was born and taught me. He lived 90 years with one hand, no prosthetic. Do the same. He was right-handed and lost his left with a dynamite blasting cap. If you want to know his lacing technique and get some high boots to impress your friends and strangers I'll describe his lace technique.

So seems like you don't really need the prosthetic. It does look a bit cumbersome. I think the stump is more natural. looking and moving Great attitude and you are smart young and pretty... You're doing great. Thanks for sharing

I did not make this one, but I'm in the field and it's honestly difficult to
      1. Match the length; her stump is quite long on its own and it looks like a wrist disarticulation so they didn't have many choices there.
      2. Weight; Yup, it's functional hand. It will be heavy no matter what. The lighter one will be cosmetics one.
      3. Suspension; I agreed with you. It's wayyy too big!
      4. Cable; I don't know why the cable ends up like that. Maybe they used to put housing for the cable before? I don't know.

Planking Hi buddy I believe a manikin is used for medicine/doctors and artists to see the anatomy of the human body, and mannequin is used to show off clothes at a store. Either way both are used to simulate the human body. If that's not the case for you then okay then.
