- As a baby, Tilly contracted a deadly form of meningitis called meningococcal septicaemia and had to undergo an operation to have both her hands amputated. Tilly is now thirteen and is the proud owner of two super-stylish superhero arms.

My twin had septasimia and died when we were 7 weeks old it was to late before they could do anything she was completely black when my mum and dad went to the hospital(btw we were already at hospital but my mum and dad were somewhere else and the staff didn't want to do anything whilst they wernt there
My only concern is how they are going to be able to afford bigger hands as she gets older
I would guess the company sends her new arms every year and give her old ones to smaller children
she is 12. the arms already have full size.

How are these not publicly funded for every amputee who wants the option??? (Not sure what country this is if USA that explains it). ten thousand dollars is nothing in terms of medical devices or procedures. But a heck of a lot for one family particularly when she will need new ones cos she is still growing.

In that case there is no excuse, these really really should be funded
they are not funded because it is not critical. A person can live without hands and the NHS is publicly funded and as such provides a level of healthcare that is free for all to walk in a receive the same service throughout the UK but paying for every need of a person would be impossible. The NHS job is to keep you fit and alive. extras are a private matter.
Because it's no critical and it's not cheap. Many amputees who have their hand/arm missing actually prefer not to deal with the hassle of prosthetic. They find it a bit of a hindrance rather than a help.
Myoelectric arms such as this are available on the NHS if certain criteria is met. This particular arm is currently undergoing trials.

I lost my leg when I was 3. Growing up I was always the slowest runner in my class. There was only one time that I didn't finish a foot race dead last. I finished 2nd to last because, in 1st grade, as a girl passed me I pushed her down. I felt terrible about it, and I was sure I was going to be in big trouble as soon as she told on me, but she never did. I don't even remember her being mad at me, which only made me feel worse.
I never did anything like that again, but I also never beat anyone else in a foot race again either.
I did learn something, far to late to make any difference to that kid who used to be me, but maybe it will make a difference to you, Kind Reader: The one who finishes the race in last place, finishes the race. Don't ever forget that.
Focus on what you can do. Don't worry about what you can't do. I can't run fast, but I can run far.

I wasn't expecting them to be pink! I don't know why I think that's the coolest part, but little things like getting to pick a colour I really think adds some needed degree of control back that has been taken from amputatees. She looks like a super hero!

What an amazing child
I had meningitis as a baby but I never lost limbs. I survived perfectly but almost died. I realise how lucky I am.... Bless her and I hope she lives a long fun life
Man, I can't wait until she can play the piano with a pair of advanced prosthetic hands. I'm looking forward to seeing not just her do that, but every amputee. We're only about 10 years away from that I think.

If my child had lost her hands at such a young age I might have pursued the Krukenberg procedure. It looks a bit freaky but provides gripping ability.

I was born without my Left hand it's a condition called Amniotic Band Syndrome but I've Never really thought about having 2 hands. But Tilly is right when she was talking about how other people take things for granted lol
