Worked for a company with Atego's and any signs of cracking or fatigue and they were changed at the six week . It's overall cheaper than being off the road and/ or recovery.
So sorry to hear you had such an expensive week! I don’t miss van life for that reason (my poor Doris had a shattered wheel bearing and rear axle die the same week, this was summer last year) which cost me a tonne. Jack’s comment at the end was so so sweet! Just reinforces the fact that your kids are happy and are enjoying the journey which is soooooo great to see. Hope the next leg of your journey is a blast and trouble free!
That was expensive - so glad that I used to be a mechanic and can do all these repairs myself. Preventative maintenance is the key, though. Whether you do the work yourself or you have someone do it for you, try to adopt a system of staggered maintenance so that you are paying out small amounts regularly, rather than going for long periods where you do nothing and then suddenly get stung with expensive bills. Especially when it is your home and you always have wear and tear - it definitely pays to keep on top of jobs that you know that you are always going to need to do. By the way, where you were and considering the size of your vehicle, your kids were definitely safer buckled up inside like they were, so keeping them there was best for them, in my opinion. Having to keep an eye on them at the road side while you were attending to business would have been an unnecessary risk. 👍
That was an expensive few days! Glad the brake failure happened before you got too far down the road. I reckon Jack is planning on taking over the channel with his brilliant presenting skills!! Can't wait for the next video. Hope you dont mind so many people joining your lovely family for the ride! 😂
I got stung and sold my last vehicle, I cycle places or get stuff delivered. Occasionally I miss having a vehicle but it's only me, it;s a small town so nothing I really need is too far. I put every spare penny into renovating my flat. It's great to watch you guys to see what's going on further than the horizon! Gimme a couple of years and I'll be discovering the world again, hopefully see a few things like you showed us. For someone 'stuck', your channel helps with seeing the light at the end of the tunnel so to speak! Thanks for sharing!
Thankyou so much for this comment! It’s very special to hear. Hope you can get lots of travel inspiration for us in the meantime and good luck with your future plans 👍❤️
I had a bad tooth pain at the start of the great lockdown of 2020. Wasn't allowed to see the dentist for 2 months. When I did he didn't even take an x-ray. Told me I need to wash my mouth out with salt water and if it persisted he'd remove the tooth. It was my front tooth so I wasn't happy. Went through a few more months of pain and then saw another dentist. First thing she did was take an x-ray. The tooth was decaying from the inside, she did a root canal and other work but the tooth was saved. I'll always be grateful for dentists. A yearly check is worth the 'discomfort' than having to loose teeth.
That was an expensive few days! You never know what's going to coat you money next with vehicles, or houses! Glad you got sorted in the end. We are looking forward to seeing the UK trips in Tori. From Susan and Chris 🚐
I’d cancel Rac myself and look for a specific HGV breakdown & recover service, may cost more but more chance of them having parts on the van and having a better equipped van, bigger jacks, larger sockets and torque wrenches etc all the big stuff that goes with commercial, RAC arnt really geared up for it, just look at vans, transits/ transporters vs HGV breakdown which are normally long wheel base sprinters, big van for more gear.
Glad you got the Lorry brakes sorted. Just a good job it didn't happen abroad and sorted here in the UK albeit it was still a bit of a faff with the breakdown cover. In the grand scheme of things the total cost isn't too bad if it keeps you on the road for another 12 months plus fingers crossed. Just look at it like house chores, a new boiler breaking down will cost just as much to replace if not more 😉
My blood pressure was up thinking you were going to try and cross that road. Like the new covers very nice. Should the garage who did the service etc not do some of the work for free? Surely a disc pad should show on verge of issues. Enjoy your next adventure keep safe.
imho there is no way to see a nearly broken disk so if they were to work for free they would go bankrupt in a few months due to free jobs or due to no customers because they would replace everything that could potentially break before for the next 20,000 Km
It's always hard with a breakdown but the good thing is you are all safe we broke down on the M 25 in a mini bus and got hit by a class 1 full of scrap metal thankfully no one badly hurt
RAC let me down in June of this year. Was travelling through Lincolnshire from Clacton on sea to the vanlife fest in Yorkshire in my transit campervan, took them 3 days to get me recovered, took them a day to get a patrolman to me.
Your such a beautiful family, I’ve been watching for a long time but never commented 😊 I love living your life with you, you’ve shown me places I’ll never get to see, so a massive thank you to all of you, I just adore you all, stay safe hugs 🤗 xx
Good night Keira and ric and the kids and Roise I hope your all well and enjoying your adventures in trory your new camper lorry please say hello to the kids and please every one keep safe and warm please keep up your good work up on your you tube channel
Wow!!..it seems to me that the place did your service should of gave you a discount, they should of seen that brake problem😮..anyway nice to see you have your issue resolved, 😂
of course, the workshop should not give a discount. NO ONE can predict that a disc will fall apart before it happens Well MOT thinks that the discs are worn = thin The fault that caused the car to stop is that the disc has fallen apart This could also have happened with discs that are not worn at all
Wow. That was a thriller! For the table, get a WISA-Multiwall panel and make the table top out of that. It is an industrial panel normally used as wall panels for trucks and eg horse trailers. It is light and has a durable coating. Nice for kitchen doors etc. too.
Good evening to you all that was cheap for the work and mot. Wynns is good stuff. I use that for my freelander . I'm sorry to hear about having to go to the dentist. Why not get one of the kids to take your hand for support. Great video again hope you have a great time touring our great country
Having now watched the end of the video I can see I was right about the discs and my initial price guess before you put it on screen was around 900 pounds. Love your videos especially when you were in Germany a few videos ago, as I live in Germany.
I have breakdown assistance, never had to use and I was paying for each month and thought about cancelling it, until one day as was driving back on the M5 from Bristol where the back passengers side wheel came loose - two bolts were loose, one was missing and the wheel was held on by the locking wheel nut. A week earlier, I took my car for its MOT where I had 4 brand new tires fitted, the person who put on the new tires forgot to tighten up the bolts. One of the scariest experiences I have ever had! I went back to the place and explained what happened, where I said that 'I am very lucky to be talking to you and not a police offier' They apologised, they gave me my money back but I got very lucky that day because it could of been a different story!
I never have an injection for my teeth, apart from the cost I cant stand having that anesthetic in my blood stream for so long. So sorry to hear about your bracks that must have been really scary. We had a problem with a caravan once where we thought it was the brakes but turned out to be the bolts holding the chassis werent long enough. The van was only 6 months old. All of those vans got recalled and then we sold ours once it was fixed. Take care. Love the new presenter at the end.
We have RAC Arrival (5.5t Moho), customer service are shockingly bad. They don’t pass on information and have no idea what you’re talking about. But the RAC mechanic/technicians are great! Our awning motor failed and the recovery guy helped dismantle it and get us on our way! brilliant! However, we would NEVER use Green Flag again (cost us £5500 when their ‘mechanic’ reverse polaritied our Merc GL350 battery! -nearly wrote the car off!) Will stick with RAC for now. Safe travels and glad you got fixed…
Action packed video..... Glad you had the problem in this country...Jack is a natural presenter... lovely family ... looking forward to next weeks vid x
Oh I'm glad you didn't cross that Rd 😮. The mot guy was epic fail on that break disc 😂 . Hopefully your on the Rd soon . Guy be gentle with that table 🤭🙊 . Another great vlog jack 😍👏🏻👏🏻 . Take care guys see you all next week ❤
Worked for 7 years as an RAC Patrolman and also in a Ford HGV garage. IT sounds like brake disc problems with it seizing up, possible cracked disc or a chunk broken off. Hope all works out OK.
Had a bit of a shock in anticipation as to whether you all were leaving truck life and going to a narrow boat.. but glad to see you are sticking with the lorrie😊
You must be one of the happiest and beautiful family ever. I love how you just keep on smiling through all the agro of the brakes . Keep doing what you're doing, looking forward to your next adventure ❤
As a retired haulage contractor, you got away with a bad day, but rest assured a recovery charge for 7.5t and above can be ££££ I’ve slept on the concrete floor of truck dealerships before now getting a breakdown repaired. Keep calm and carry on. Love your blogs…
I did enjoy your sorties to Iceland and in a Canal boat, but I am glad to see you back to van life for now. I am on a CL at North Warnbourgh, just off J5, M3- it is £10 a night and has hard standing for lorry. It backs on to canal and short walk to ruins of Odiham Castle. They have had a big coach in before
Another great video guys but I have to be honest..... Noone likes spending money but an MOT advisory is exactly that...advice. You choose to ignore it at your peril...as you found out! To think...while the wheels were off you could have given them a lick of hammerite paint too!
Thanks 😀, we've been to Bury loads. Nice place and can even stay in one of the council car parks in the motorhome (though I don't think we'd fit in the truck)!
I made a really light weight table thats really strong by making a frame and sticking thin ply on front and back and sanded the edges varnished will floor varnish still looks good 4 years later. And making your own means you can do it shape you need. Used 22mm planed battens and 6mm ply.
For the table, have you considered the mechanism off of a caravan table? We had a hobby 720 and the table dropped to make a big bed. Nice and sturdy mechanism
@@Touringwiththekidscan be normal to hit it with a sledgehammer, with the heat cycles when you brake and when they cool down again they can seize onto the hub.
Get doing some research on your lorry and what parts tend to go bad/faulty then check then and plan for it. I wouldn’t wait a year until next MOT/service to be advised of a potential issue. Imagine if you’d been doing 60 on a motorway and it suddenly fully locked out… you’ve been very lucky here! Put the lottery on!
Ric, justice be aware that radial tyres ware evenly across the tread area so if you have near bald areas on the edges then you could easily have wires showing by the time the main tread is down to the legal limit... I worked for 40 years in the tyre industry 15 of them with Goodyear Dunlop
I got road flares take 3AAA battery's there on the wish website under emergency lighting I would highly recommend them have magnetic and hook on them have different flash patterns
Sounds like to me that your brake pads or brake caliper has come loose or it could be your bearings that have completely seized… hope you get it fixed soon love watching your channel
38:18 I don't use AA because they have their ridiculous "relay" system - they recover you to their nearest base then some hours later transfer you to another lorry & take you to another base then transfer you again before taking you where you're going, it often takes 12 to 24 hours!
those discs were advised as being in poor condition in november 23 by a qualified VOSA technician, never mind november 24 ! maximum brake effort is used to test the brakes at the end of the mot, so it's a good chance hairline cracks developed then, and in your case, going rapidly downhill from there. only pure luck avoided a high speed lock up, normally tipping the truck over... mot mechanics don't have a crystal ball, and are not allowed to fail parts until they become dangerous, but you were fairly warned...
On both MOT's we spoke to the tester and on both occasions they said there was still plenty of life in them and don't warrant replacing yet, just something to keep an eye. He said this is fairly common in trucks and bearing in mind commercial trucks have 6 weekly inspections you could argue why this happens at all? These things just happen!
@@Touringwiththekids you do a very low annual mileage, and your truck sits in damp grass etc, so corrosion is more of an issue than overall wear. i would be getting the rears checked out just in case. this was a failure primarily caused age/corrosion, not wear, so if the rears have no history of replacement, regardless of wear, i would seriously think about renewing them, because, as you are running at MGW all the time, they always get a hard time when called into use. take care
So happy to have broken down ! ( copy and paste from my FB but a breakdown story from Friday) Full time in the van as you may know. This has made us meet the most amazing people over the last year. However there is a new bar set for kind hearted generous people. Auxiliary belt broke on Friday afternoon. Pulled over to see what was going on. The belt tensioner had broken up and fecked up a few bits in the process of self detonation. Then moved down the road outside a guys house. Luckily he was a bit of a dick! So pulled all the broken shredded bits of belt out and thought I would drive to an industrial estate just four miles away. On the way saw a big shed door open. Turned around and stopped to ask the guy if he minded me working on his concrete pad outside his workshop. WELL this is where it all changed, he said yeah no problem. We chatted and he said he was leaving in half hour. WHICH HE DID!!! Never to be seen again. Leaving his workshop open and giving me full access to all his tools. He did say his son was going to call around after 5. Well im sure you are thinking that so far this guy was just the kindest guy ever. For that you would be 100% correct! His son turned up around 4 dropping so stuff off. Being a lorry mechanic he said he would come back after work and help me out. He did just that. Stayed until 8.30 only leaving after running the van to check everything was as it should be. He tried to refuse any payment too. Which am sorry wasn't going to wash with me! What gorgeous amazing kind helpful people these guys are.
All motorhomes are class 4. Obviously large ones like yours still have to be tested at a HGV site because of size and weight. Class 7s are only commercial vehicles between 3000kg and 3500kg
Unfortunately discs do break like that but it should have mentioned last time the brake pads were changed that the discs were in poor condition and needed replacing. Especially on a truck. That could have been a catastrophic accident
I was with RAC but switched to AA after RAC took 6 hours to recover me. I wouldn't have minded if I was in the sticks but I was in a b&q carpark in a large town. I've just switched from AA to try greenflag after AA put my premium up by over 250% despite the fact I'd never even used them
Aww I know, made us so proud as parents! He did a much longer segment and it was all just so brilliant. Had no idea what he had recorded until I edited it all x

Awww so glad you got that sorted fam. Looking forward to your adventures and Jack's excellent mini vlogs. 👍👀💚🌷🌿🙇🏻♀️ xxxxx
Thank you 🤗
The price of service and mot - I would say that’s a great price for an annual payment. It equates to one months mortgage!
Daft question as a truck driver, what have you done about the tachograph in tori ?
Has it been disconnected?
It's been set to 'out of use'. As we're private we don't need to follow tacho restrictions 👍
I appreciate that the Kia warranty is 7 years, but have they said how long the warranty is for the battery?
I recommend ray goody’s in Stowmarket if ever your local and need there help
hi guys where did u get the covers from was it shein ? cheers JT...
Yes it was. If you can't find them, send us a dm on instagram and we'll send over a link 👍
Could it be getting stuck in the pumpkin patch made the brake disc break from Tom .
Oh well, the discs won't need replacing for a long time now!! Bit pricey but in that situation, what choice do you have? Another great video.
That's it isn't it. All done now, so no need to worry 👍
Thanks for joining us on our journey ❤️👍
@Touringwiththekids you should pop up to south Wales as it is a beautiful price to visit
38:18 I don't use AA because they have their ridiculous "relay" system - they recover you to their nearest base then some hours later transfer you to another lorry & take you to another base then transfer you again before taking you where you're going, it often takes 12 to 24 hours!
I'm just saying but all brake down companys do this. Very common practice.
You won’t get relay on a 7.5t too heavy would be a low loader job.
those discs were advised as being in poor condition in november 23 by a qualified VOSA technician, never mind november 24 ! maximum brake effort is used to test the brakes at the end of the mot, so it's a good chance hairline cracks developed then, and in your case, going rapidly downhill from there. only pure luck avoided a high speed lock up, normally tipping the truck over...
mot mechanics don't have a crystal ball, and are not allowed to fail parts until they become dangerous, but you were fairly warned...
@@Touringwiththekids you do a very low annual mileage, and your truck sits in damp grass etc, so corrosion is more of an issue than overall wear. i would be getting the rears checked out just in case.
this was a failure primarily caused age/corrosion, not wear, so if the rears have no history of replacement, regardless of wear, i would seriously think about renewing them, because, as you are running at MGW all the time, they always get a hard time when called into use. take care
Cracked brake disc
40:21 some of those webs have been snapped for a very long time, i bet the 'service' company are inspecting more thoroughly now!
You should go with bamboo it’s lightweight
and hard wearing For your tabletop
Not a bad shout
Might be brake chamber garages sometimes wind the brakes on or off for MOT
So happy to have broken down ! ( copy and paste from my FB but a breakdown story from Friday)
Full time in the van as you may know.
Deffo the Flux Capacitor
That was our first thought, but apparently not 🤣
Omg I feel your pain I’m terrified of the dentist
Not nice are they 🥹
That’s the joys of having 3 pointed star ,expensive to repair
You make everything interesting!
Ah thankyou! Glad you think so ☺️
Tappits. Happened to my very first car. Sounds like a pneumatic drill. My mechanic fixed it with a sledge hammer
re the table; perhaps routeing out sections of the underside would reduce the weight.
Good price👍
All motorhomes are class 4. Obviously large ones like yours still have to be tested at a HGV site because of size and weight. Class 7s are only commercial vehicles between 3000kg and 3500kg
Cheaper than I expected
hiya my friend, i would still have a oil change every 5.000 miles, look after that engine.
18:28 it looks like you may have 2 problems. Are the end flanges cracked or loose?
If Jack gets tired of you, I'll be happy to borrow him for a few weeks
..... You probably can't do without him any longer
Hehe, can't do without him for longer than a day 😂
Wheel bearing 100%
I’m wrong I have seen this before only on large HGVs
The RAC chap also said it could be the bearing before inspecting 👍
Unfortunately discs do break like that but it should have mentioned last time the brake pads were changed that the discs were in poor condition and needed replacing. Especially on a truck. That could have been a catastrophic accident
I was with RAC but switched to AA after RAC took 6 hours to recover me. I wouldn't have minded if I was in the sticks but I was in a b&q carpark in a large town. I've just switched from AA to try greenflag after AA put my premium up by over 250% despite the fact I'd never even used them
As I watch it now you said before it was pulling to the right. Could it have been the start of the problem then 🤔
Very good
Thanks
😂he for sure got it right, its the best live a kid could ever have, freedom.
Aww I know, made us so proud as parents! He did a much longer segment and it was all just so brilliant. Had no idea what he had recorded until I edited it all x
