Great Sunday morning content. Great editing. TFL nails another video. :) Looking forward to the off road video. :)
What a fantastic life when the fight of the day is whether you are stuck driving a Raptor or TRX. I am a little jealous gentlemen. Lol
Hey Roman our gas isn't $4 or $5 per gallon in Ca it is a super reasonable $3.89 for 91 at my local Chevron. Smh
Just stupid what we pay here but better than some countries.
I think it would be interesting if you had some kind of cost of ownership comparison between vehicles. Eg. Purchase price, fuel cost, insurance, repair, warranty, etc.
Not a bad idea, but new stuff that they keep a year you're talking gas and a few oil changes. I don't think they would really get enough info to give a good comparison. Given you can just look at the cost and fuel economy and guess.
@@craigquann Even a years worth of data would be interesting between these two trucks. I think the cost over a year will be very different based on the extra $17 for a tank of gas.
the city efficiency is probaly in the single digits for the trx
JogBird Oh it is....
Who cares...lol. go buy the other 700hp truck
@@nycmaverick head to head the raptor can't keep up right? Your statement is hypothetical.
@@hemiaddiction I wouldn't own a 700 HP gas guzzler let alone a POS Dodge.
@@mr.ford-man4481 too bad it’s not a dodge...
I think it’s really cool that you guys do this stuff together. That’s a pretty awesome father/son road trip with some nice rides
The 36 gallon tank is a huge bonus in the F150 and it's a very common option. It's nice being able to drive 700 miles on one tank or be able to go on a trip and not need to worry about stopping for fuel.
I'm not sure it is common. From my research only the Crew Cab Raptor and Limited include a 36 gallon tank. Every other F150 is 23-26 gallons. 30.6 for hybrid.
@@exileut it's an option on all f150's
$17 is worth the sound, power and the joy of driving a TRX for sure!
baleh
It work out to 5,000 dollars in fuel for every 100,000 miles you drive Over the raptor lol. Wow bang out another thousands every year if you drive a lot.
Except it's not $17 a tank because being turbo the Raptor can run on Regular but being supercharged the TRX must have Premium to avoid detonation. Figuring the price differences of regular/premium in my area it's a $13,000 difference over a 150,000 mile life of the truck and that's figuring that gas prices stay where they are and we don't ever see a rise to a national average of over $5/gal for premium like they did in the recession.
Also the trucks are not the same price if both were similarly optioned out including tax the Raptor is $19,000 cheaper than the TRX. Add the $19,000 lower price tag of the Raptor to the $13,000 lower cost to fuel it and the Raptor is $32,000 less. But that's not all because TFL's Raptor which is nearly fully optioned out was $77,000 but you can get a 2yr old Raptor with the exact same option package and 30k miles on it for $55,000 which actually including fuel savings would make the Raptor over $50,000 less than the TRX.
If you have lots of money
Don't get me wrong, I think the TRX is a wonderful and mighty truck with a impeccable V8 sound but I don't trust FCA. Excellent truck, bad brand (and bad reputation). I'll take the Raptor all day long.
For what it's worth, FCA is improving. I share the same concerns as you, but even in the past 5 years the reliability has improved somewhat. Leasing is probably the safest way to go still, but I'm less concerned now than I was.
Why would you go by internet reputation? Do you believe that Ram trucks are bad because they have Chrysler transmissions too? That's internet reputation for you
Why don't you trust FCA? The only people who don't trust FCA are dumbass keyboard warriors. The are a great company. The 6.2 hemi shares parts with the 6.4 and 5.7. Both of those are very reliable engines. This truck uses the ZF 8 speed, which is considered the best auto transmission in the world. It is used by GM, Ford, Toyota, BMW, etc. The bad reputation comes from the early 2000's. The old Dodge trucks had bulletproof motors, but probably some of the shittiest transmissions ever.
Man those gas prices seem so cheap only a year later! Thanks Joe!
Bigger and more powerful engine gets you to pump station quicker🤔
Hahahah yeah keep telling yourself that. The difference wouldn’t be that great in time and the Raptor had about a 250 miles longer range so the TRX would be in the rear view after the 1st stop.
@@DobieDoxie you know why its gets you quicker? Because of that high fuel consuption. Swooosh... Trx will be at the pump 200mile earlier. Which means quicker at the pump
@@nycmaverick nah. Trx will be faster at the pump. Because Raptor will still be going while Trx will be fueling up
@@JK-ki7yv your math sucks.
@@DobieDoxie i guess you dont understand what I’m saying. Its ok.
I think I would pick the Raptor, just from a long road trip perspective. This being purely based on your video here. At least you guys aren't lunatics like a certain other UA-camr who damaged his fully loaded out TRX doing an insane jump they were never designed for....😁😁😁
If you ride alone yes, once you overland with bunch of stuff and weight both trucks close to limits, it will be about same if not worse... Every one i know with 4 cylinder Frontiers or 6 cylinder full size trucks armed to teeth with tools for work gets same or worse millage then V8s
I want to know the break down of how many people can afford these trucks and don't care about the cost of gas versus people who finance these trucks, then slowly discover that they can barely afford them due to the cost they didn't take into account.
I think people *WANT* that story but from what I've seen in the Raptor community that type of thing is few and far between. I'm guessing it'll be the same with the TRX. People might get ANNOYED with having to fill up once a week but if you're driving a $75k-$100k vehicle and filling it up is hurting you financially things have gone very, very wrong. :D
I don’t finance a truck with zero down. With my Raptor as trade in and putting down another 15k I could get the TRX loan under 40k for 5 years. Now I’ve got a 500-600 dollar truck payment.
@@robertwilson1664 u kno its not actually 77k thats a speacial order truck with no options , they are like 90k with decent options without mark up and yes there will be mark ups. I know because I did price one and it was 98k and they wanted 15k more over . I am not doing it for this truck . Waiting on the raptor V8 .
@@randyjr3479 try another dealership I found one in Oklahoma that would do 3% off whatever you built online. I configured a truck with the same options as my Raptor and it came out to 83k. But you’re right getting a dealership to deliver it at that price is another story. I hate stealerships I wish we could buy directly from the manufacture.
Is not about the cost of gas, its freaking annoying to be constantly stopping to refuel lol.
The shot where the Ram leaves the pump and the raptor pulls up sounded like a truck left the station, and a vacuum cleaner pulled in. BTW on the way back you should trade the truck that was in the lead so the other gets the draft.
Yes and IDK that it is $17 more per tank to fill, I'd still rather have the T-Rex and is what a truck is supposed to be. Big & bold with all that V8 power and the supercharger whine is sick, yep that's what I'm talkin about and is a man's truck 💪🏼😎

@@robertwilson1664 It hasn't even been out for a year. I literally guarantee that they will run it this year.
Really looking forward to the off-road video. For me, same cost, I'd take the Raptor all day, the extra power isn't worth anything to me for what I would use the truck for, mild off road, camping, overlanding. But the range is a killer...500 per tank is a very big deal when planning a route that takes you through fairly remote parts of the country off road where you can easily be 100 miles between gas stations or worse. I'm actually thinking of converting my current F150 to the 36gal tank to end up with around 600+ range on a tank which almost means no need for a 5gal rotopax, though regardless of range, knowing you always have a backup can set your mind at ease.
Sorry but this mpg would get old
Tommy is always snarky and Roman is always wrong. 🤣
Good video but most people don't drive those trucks on the freeway all the time so the question is what kind of in town mpg do they get? If the Raptor gets 14 but the RAM only gets 8. Plus what's the fuel economy off roading can you spend all day in Raptor off roading without having to fill up versus having to leave to go fill up your TRX again? 😁
That extra 250hp has so few real world applications beyond saying 'look how fast this goes'. I'd love to drive one, but at some point it is just silly.
And that’s the point of the TRX. It’s silly, it’s needless, it has no point and that’s exactly the reason why I’d love to drive it. For sure a smaller engines makes more sense for 80% of the owners, but when you buy the TRX, you care more about smiles per gallon I guess
How does FCA achieve their CAFE requirements? I cannot think of one fuel efficient vehicle in their line up? Here in Canada, there is no CAFE equivalent.
@@mikefoehr235 FCA bought teslas carbon emissions credits which is the reason they can make these vehicles lol
@Randy James Thank you sir for the info👍🇨🇦
@@ThEUNchaRtedmAN Jesus, that is crazy. Look, Many people criticize Toyota for the Tundra...and I own one and yes it is certainly harder on fuel but not crazy thirsty BUT Toyota has many vehicles in their line up that are super thrifty as well. Nobody can take that away from Toyota.

Premium is about 7,50$ per gallon here in Norway, I'm not sure that's a hell yeah. Think I'll keep my diesel Silverado for a while longer 😂I guess the price tag over here would be at least 188 000$ for the ram anyway, probably more. You guy's enjoy and keep making those videos. 😁
I'll take the Raptor for everyday use, but the TRX is cool.
Same am a ford guy
Yep, if I had the money, I’d just get both and say booyah to fanboys from both sides.
The EPA does their MPG in a vacuum chamber! There's no way to get the milage they claim ever on any vehicle! Keep the great content coming guys!
Diesels seem to all bet the EPA numbers, but the EPA hates diesels so it makes sense.
I know that the topper on the Raptor is utilitarian, but it ruins the look of the truck.
Need to get that stupid thing off.
They sponsor the show, so regardless of looks, its going to stay on. :-)
(I agree, it does spoil the look of the truck)
A turd could sponsor the show and they'd mount it like a hood ornament.
Big Ram fan here. I’ve owned two. I’d rather have the Raptor d/t price for what you get, gas mileage, and ten years of perfecting the build. Front end diff is better on the Raptor as well.
Who told you the lie of the differential 😂😂I’ve seen so many snap over my time at Ford
I had a truck with a camper shell, taking it off always bumped my highway average by 1-2 mpg, I'd say add 1 mpg to the Raptor mpg average or take if off completely? However even still the gas cost difference won't be significant, if you're driving ten thousand miles a year the TRX is going to cost around $500-600 more in gas. The impact of having a 550+ mile range vs a 342 mile range will have a significant impact on what can be done with the TRX vs. the Raptor. For example, there are already people getting rid of the GT500 in favor of the GT350 and the stated reason is the GT500 consumes so much gas they have to constantly fill it up.
Mine was opposite I take my canopy off and I lose 1-2 mpg I think the canapy made the truck more arrow dynamic.
It's easy for someone who owns their own company to say $17 extra a tank is worth paying on the TRX. But if someone has to pay for that out of their own pocket they might not think so. I'm already getting bored of hearing about the TRX
Problem is, every gets carried away by the crappy FIAT marketing. Reality is starting to set in now.
since you're already going out there, might as well make a video. But if you're in these trucks(or any truck really) mpg isn't in your mind, really ever. also, love that you're heading out there, it always lets me know what the winter conditions are like!
A true enthusiast worry’s about smiles per mile not miles per gallon!😎
And for some people, they aren't mutually exclusive 😊
@@specialopsdave you mean like Miata or Prius with included joke teller?
By that logic, the Raptor driver would have a 50 mile per fill-up longer smile than the TRX... :)
@@MariuszChr lmao
Look up on youtube "40mpg Corvette"
To a true enthusiast in a baja 1000 race the smaller tank and 3.5 miles per gallon less will make a difference in the end.

Great video guys! As similar as these two trucks are, they’re both different in many ways.
hhmmm A V6 turbo vs a supercharged V8. I wonder which is going to be better? the suspense is killing me
Raptor highway mileage is 27% higher than TRX. Exactly matching the EPA difference.
You should remove the topper on the Raptor for a fair test. It effects the aerodynamics either hurting or helping its fuel economy.
That TRX is sweet but I’d still take that Raptor over it all day.
I prefer the ford 2021 with the V6 picaus the gas prices going up
Exactly! How people fail to realize what’s coming is by ons me. Pucker up for $5+ a gallon again
Do you have to refuel the ram trx with premium fuel, or is that a recommendation?
Ontario Canada here, cheapest place for premium (91 octane) near me is $4.54/ gallon in Canadian coins. So that probably works out to closer to $3.00 US. But thats at Costco. Other stations would be closer to $3.50 US. Go to Toronto or northern Ontario and its probably closer to $4. And then there's 93 or 94 octane depending on which station that would be well over that....
Watching your videos makes me feel like I should have spent more time with my dad before he died 2 years ago. I just wasn't close to him as an adult and I'm afraid I see the same thing happening with my son
In my experience with my softopper, I consistently got 2-3 mpg worse in my Tacoma with the topper on. I'd be curious to know how it would affect the Raptor.
@SkunkWorks sounds about right. I got 20 on an 12 plus hour trip on the highway. Stock, MO to Houston.

Thanks for all the number crunching; I love this sorta thing. Now let’s see some off-roading comparisons too!
The TRX gets roughly the same mileage as my 04 f150, but with about 700 more horsepower. 🤷♂️
One suggestion, don’t overlay the map unless you’re drawing a line showing where you are.
My 4.0 Frontier averages 14 city and 18 highway.
Love the TRX until you hear it idling. Hate that ticking those big hemi’s do.
I don't like how people seem to forget that there is more to the fun of vehicles than horsepower or 4WD, like cornering stability, braking performance and weight.
Truck community is exactly known for high IQs. Sorry to be mean but it’s kind of true, doesn’t apply to everyone of course. That’s why you see so many poorly modified trucks on the road!
This is just baja truck comparison. But I agree. People tend to forget that sedan could carry family of 4 easily, instead 99% buys a SUV or van, with fundamentally bad cornering/handling.
Yeah because my grocery getter and grandma hauler needs to hit a G in neck breaking turns... Do you hit every roundabout like your on bristol speedway? Lol

Lifes short, drive what makes you happy! Might not get another chance to hear a big v8 under the hood in coming years
This is one of the reasons I bought a Ram with the HEMI over a Ecoboost. Wanted a V8 before there all gone.
Actually the raptor will have a V8 on February 3 2021
People keep saying that, yet Ford has not one.... BUT TWO V8 ENGINES coming for their F-Series, and there's no sign that Chrysler or GM will be giving up their V8s.
If that were true, then why do companies keep spending millions on the development of new V8 engines?
If you use the same Moab station before your trip home theoretically you could get around 2 mpg better in each considering its ethanol free.
also run your MPG back, the slower speeds on i70 should have a boosted number returning to front range vs driving out. can't explain why, but i've seen that a few times in my old f150 and now the jeep.
Tommy nailed the MPGs - good intuition!
your trx is not broke in yet, i did an oil analysis on my power wagon and at 12,000 miles i still have the break in metal bits in my oil. that was my 3rd oil change i sent off... we'll see in another 10,000 miles if the metal bits drop dramatically.
@Randy James haha!! Or that. Could be that.
if the Ram is your daily driver. that close to $800 a month just for gas
Depending on driving habits, cost of fuel, miles driven, other variables etc, that would be insane. My F150 5.0 has a 36 gallon tank. Usually I fill it up around a 1/4 tank but lately i've been filling it at half tank. A full tank for me is about 600 miles. I go through roughly 2 tanks of fuel a month. So my average cost with my truck is probably between $100-$150 based off driving habits, how much I drive and the price of fuel. Price of fuel varies as I usually go to a gas station linked with a grocery store to take advantage of their fuel perks program. I can't image putting $800 in my gas tank monthly and not using my F150 for some sort of business or work application where the truck was a tool and a tax write off.
You must be driving much more than the average person if your spending $800.00 per month at 12.3 mpg!
Worth it.
It's when you actually use that 200+ more hp during your trip that will make a difference at the pump. Same goes for spirited driving of the raptor as well. So his argument is questionable.
@@andrewsbbq I agree that the additional parasitic loss of the supercharger in addition to the larger displacement further my point that the TRX is going to predominantly have worse full economy. I was replying directly to the gentleman's comment in the video. But your point is very valid as well.
@@R1SoDaRkLy With 650 ft/lbs, I doubt the motor will struggle to turn that supercharger.
@@andrewsbbq Yea i guess you don't realize that turbo's create back pressure in the exhaust which like parasitic lost costs power. On top of heat from those turbo's transfering in to air coming through the intake which would allow less air. Both have positives and negitives so don't act like turbo has 0 negative effect.
OH SCREW IT TOMMY!!!! V8 sound for the win. Love the content keep up the great work!
It’s worth the extra $17 a fill up just to hear that beautiful V8 roar! :)
its more than just $17.00 difference he said the trx was empty and the raptor had just over a quarter and it stated had over 200 miles left, if they would have dove the to other gas station and then filled again and added the $17 plus the additional difference at the second gas pump it would be more realistic
Not that it's going to matter for the TRX MPG but the Raptor has a "Some sort of a Cap" covering its bed and anyone knows that if you cover the bed, either with a cap or a tonneau cover you will get better gas (up to .5mpg). Thought you might check into this and factor that into the Raptor's gas mileage, but it still does get good milage for what it puts out in HP.
The trucks weigh about the same? Weight, aero and drag being equal it should take a similar amount of power to maintain highway speeds regardless of what engine is used. At a steady speed, like 60 mph, on flat road. Add in some hills, or traffic and idle time and that big 8 will be more thirsty. But V6’s are for mini vans, soooo.....
How much weight were you carrying? If not much, maybe you should do a test with added weight to simulate real world trips with family, gear, and luggage vs empty.
It's not about the cost of gas, it's about the range. The low speed stuff the trucks are gonna be really similar, but hopefully you'll do a day of desert running out there too and compare the offroad range of the two.
Don't forget boys about the difference in Displacement. 3.5 litres vs 6.2 litres. That's like a 2.0 litre 4 cylinder vs a 3.6 litre V6. Although it can't be denied that the RAM does have a sinful sound. The Raptor will use less gas than the RAM TRX.
However the RAM Cummins diesel seems to always use less diesel than the Ford Powerstroke. Honours even.
I had a supercharged 04 Lightning that I could run the quarter in the mid 12 sec range. Averaged 10 MPG. On the other hand I pulled a car with my TTV6 Raptor and averaged 15 MPG.
Never seen a video about trucks with so little footage of trucks.
Did anyone else notice when he put the nozzle back after filling the raptor the first time it was locked wide open
Wwooooooo! Excited about the Off-Road comparison.
My 2017 F-150 4X4 with the 5.0 V8 and a 36 gallon tank will go 740 highway miles. Once you're going 75 mph and using cruise control it doesn't matter how much horsepower it has.
I just have a question ,who is really going to buy this truck ,you can't haul anything ,you can't do tow anything , or do anything other than burnouts .it's bigger than a normal truck and it can't do anything
My 2003 F-150 FX4 with a canopy and work gear gets 13-14 mpg back and forth to work.
You Remind Me of my father I love the relationship between you two
Geez those trucks love gas, I did a 600 mile trip in my Ranger diesel and got almost triple the mileage(33mpg)of the TRX, I probably get triple the 0-60 too.
Just FYI, I think the TRX is still learning and won't give you accurate results yet. My 2019 Ram Sport which I purchased new, would tell me I only had 350 mile range when I filled it up for the first month or so. After some highway mileage was put on it, it started to increase that value. I just returned from a 3500 mile trip and the best I saw for range was 650 miles. My truck is also the biggest cab, whatever Ram calls that, Crewcab maybe?
Oh you guys are gonna love the upcoming gas prices for sure loll

@@JustinKingOffroad yep, it was good while it lasted.
Yeah cause first thing on Dems and biden agenda is to tank the economy. You goofies. Lulz. Gas staying cheap.
"The TRX has sucked this gas station out of fuel".... Priceless comment!
Ram should gone with 4wd beside AWD the trx could be a little better on fuel
The Raptor as AWD mode, it doesn't impact MPG's unless the center differential engages, granted the manual explicitly states not to turn it on when on dry pavement.
It goes in 2wd on the highway. It still is 4x4. It still has a transfer case.
Harder to resist a heavy pedal on that V8 supercharged motor. My guess 8-10mpg on fun drives but damn it sounds good!
My Colorado zr 2 only got 15 mpg and you had to keep
Pushing that V6 to keep it going
I don't seem to remember so many people crying about MPG when the 6.2 Raptor made the exact MPG, despite being down nearly 300hp over the TRX. And when Ford does drop the V8 in the Raptor, magically all of the MPG concerns will subside(ya know, because it is a 700hp, 6k pound truck after all). Hmmm....🤔
200 more horsepower and the sweet sound of the V8 yes it's worth $17 more a tank for me, I'll just buy less truck stops tornadoes and mountain dew lol!
Honestly I would prefer the Raptor for it’s better range. Larger fuel tank and better economy. Yes, the extra power of the Ram would be awesome, but the huge purchase price difference and cost to own kind of kills it for me personally.
And the noise of the TRX is nice but when you have your family in the truck driving hundreds of miles it gets annoying. Loud exhaust is great for anything but a daily driver.
@@Phishsamich Yeah, it would be good if it had two mode exhaust. Its one of the best inventions on performance cars to be both quiet and loud at the push of a button.
Not really an apples to apples test with that soft top on the Raptor, not sure if it is helping or hurting the mileage but it would be interesting to see an A / B test to see if there is much of a difference.
TFL- Raptor has every option
Ram- yea every option to know its gonna still be behind in power, looks, and tech..
If I could afford either of those trucks, gas prices would be the least of my concerns.
Q: How much does it cost to fuel up the TRX over the life of the vehicle?
A: Assume the position!
Dont hear people bitch about how much beer is consumed "

man that Raptor still looks like a King. I still pick the raptor for my daily commutes
the car shows miles after average consumption, if you drive in the city, the meter will count show lower than if you went on the highway for natural reasons ..
I don't care if the Fiat has 1700 hp. An unloaded pickup truck that gets about the same mileage as an 80,000 lb semi is ridiculous!
