I liked Tommy’s quote “Don’t floor it TOO much…we’re doing an MPG test here!”
That was not a "quote" it was a request for dad not to ruin the MPG ratings by driving like an ape. 😏
It’s worse than I expected.. but it’s really not bad. My lifted v8 tundra got 12 and my lifted Tacoma gets 16… so considering the raptor has a boosted v8 and 37’s 13.5 is actually pretty solid
I was going to buy a 700 hp supercharged v-8 powered, 37 inch tired, $110,000 truck, But I just found out that it only gets 10 mpg, and that’s not acceptable 😂
Very surprising right
Some people feel guilty about their carbon footprint. They want a cool car or truck but don't want to feel bad about it, its not only an issue of the cost of gas. Why do you think Audi can sell a $140,000 electric luxury car?
@@jeffk464 yep, and the Porsche Taycan are selling well.
@@jeffk464 The sourcing of that electrtic car alone is a much bigger carbon footprint
@@jml9550 Taycan and the etron GT are the same platform. I think the Audi looks better inside and out.
I have a 2001 Excursion 7.3, the best mileage I ever had loaded with 7 passengers and the back full of luggage, just over 19 mpg going from Grand Junction to Durango CO. I consistently get 18 plus running expressways at 75 mph, around town 9 to 13 mpg all starting and stopping. I think I will just keep putting about $1,200.00 into it per year for maintenance 😊
Those 7.3l v8 Powerstroke diesels were Bulletproof always wanted an Excursion with a 7.3 say no to 6.0 I'd even opt for the v10 over that
Best suv ever made
If you can afford these trucks, you can certainly afford the fuel costs, so it's a moot point.
*moot
You might care about fuel tank range though and better mpg helps
Lots of people that can’t afford a raptoR will buy one and get hit with a double whammy!
Yes if you can afford the truck gas is a minor detail. How's the insurance cost?
or the cost of plates in colorado
I am not a Ford guy but that is a very nice truck, in & out, and powertrain. Well done Ford.
I think you should do the same thing on the way back and then average them for a more consistent mileage loop.
In Los Angeles, California, the local dealership had the Shelby American Super Snake for $141,000, which is dealership price.
They also have the black F150 Raptor R, for $230,000 again dealership price.
As much as the Raptor R is more built for off road, there was also the F150 Roush
Off road at $94,000 in 7 years I'll buy the Roush. Currently, driving a 2022 Roush Mustang with the 3rd Pedal 6 Speed Manual Transmission. Therefore, markups are still up
Personally I love my Gen 2. I prefer the 3.5 because of the fuel consumption and its not hard to get it over 700hp.
I have an R.. couldn't care less what it costs to fill.. all I care about is the fuel capacity, which is 36, so I don't have to constantly fill it up. Good test none the less.
I would still want to TRX I’m not gonna cry about less than a mile per gallon difference
I had a 2014 Roush Supercharged Raptor that got 12 mpg. Gets old fast. My Gen 2 gets 15 mpg average and with a 36 gallon tank that’s 100 more miles per tank.
Curious how the H.O. Ecoboost compares on power. A 6.2 with a TVS is probably a lot quicker but the regular gen 1 Ecoboost I drove a long time ago still impresses me to this day. A much lighter aluminum body truck with more power and a 10 speed should be even more impressive.
Yeah I get it. My wife’s older Lexus V6 needs to fill up every 2 weeks. Our Lexus hybrid will arrive in 3 weeks and with a 14 gallon tank, she will get ~500 miles per tank, which is probably fill up once a month.
I agree with you on the Gen lol. My light foot gets me 18.9-19.4 in mine. Love the performance and the ability to save money at the pump.
@@302Mustang13 The 20104 was heavier. The Gen 2 is not quite as fast as the Gen with the 6.2L. Off the line for the first 100 feet I would say they are close. The 6.2 will pull away at the end of the 1/4 mile.
@@joegotz1971 gen 2 is quite a bit faster, unless you are talking a gen 1 with a supercharger and then it's about even. The Gen 2 has the 10 speed, it's 600 pounds lighter give or take and has 39 more hp and and 80 or more TQ.
Better than I expected. It's not the cost, it's that I don't like to make frequent stops to fill up.
Lol ok
Not to take away from the awesome video, but as an Alaskan my favorite part is seeing all the snow melting.
Booyah 👊🏽 😁 👍🏽 🇺🇸
Both are ridiculously expensive and out of my price range.
Even the 3.5L is crazy expensive.
Both the R and the TRX are insane. TRX has no option but 4x4 and the R probably ran 2 wheel drive most the time, so that is a likely explanation on the MPG difference.
No see you got that confused they both have 4 x 4 the TRX is a full-time 4 wheel drive with a center differential now the Raptor typar is part-time four-wheel drive with the transfer case
He’s correct as a TRX owner it stays in AWD . The Raptor stays in 2wd until you switch it.
But they drove in in 4 hi…they say in the beginning of the video
@@Brownlightning1990 they said 4 auto not 4 hi, there is a difference.
@@joshraleigh101 I believe Alex on Autos stated it's constant minimum 25% to the front with TRX, maybe you seen it written somewhere
Is everyone getting in shape now ? First Mr truck and now Roman looking like a Roman gladiator. Guys this ain’t easy from someone who lost 75 lbs himself. Good 👍
Tell me about it. 50Yo and 20 lbs overweight……your body will tell you to do so or else.
I have also have a truck with a 5.2v8, 4x4 that gets about 13-15mpg. But I paid less than $1k for it, so it’s not a problem for me!
Great truck but prices on these super trucks are unreasonable 😮
Yes ridiculous pricing. Their 2014 Raptor 6.2 cost 55k, which inflation adjusted is 69k....now only 9 year later this one cost 41k more even on inflation adjusted numbers?? Cmon, they continue to price themselves out of sales and this will come back on all of these manufacturers.
I own a Gen 1 6.2, and to be fair, the comparable base Gen 3 isn't all that far off that inflation adjustment. Cars and trucks in general are getting crazy, but you have to acknowledge that the R is a different animal.
@Adam Miller yea it does have the predator engine and more tech but these are trucks, cars(looking at you corvette) that the hard working person could get if they saved their money. Now, its only white collar dollars that can buy these.
@Adam Miller yeah it really is crazy and its not stopping I saw a 4Runner pro for over 80k
@David Aix that's beyond ridiculous, wow. Should be criminal.
Have a beautiful SUNDAY EVERYONE ✌️ THANKS MICA'S 👏👏👏
The problem with the trx is that it’s full time 4wd so I think that’s why you guys have it on awd because if you leave it on 2wd it would be better on gas .
very true trx probably would’ve got more mpg
Except dodge makes shit components so they can’t risk allowing you to run in 2wd only or else the rear diff/axles/trans would explore 😂😂😂😂 (truth)
Gen2 with the whipple tune gets you about the same mileage on 91 octane, but still has 180 less HP.
If you did that entire route in 4A that would be at least a half a mpg difference as well. Once ont the highway the roads were clear so hopefully you took it out. Kudos for doing the mpg test in normal mode, all tests should be done that way.
Not only that Roman was definitely driving faster than traffic, F150s immediately get less efficient once you get over 70. I bet if you were on the highway at 65-68 you would eek out 18-19mpg in 2wd.
That's a beautiful truck! Sad I will never be able to afford one.
Dream big & manifest you’ll get what you want!!
it's most likely possible to rent with Turo to check it out and experience it
If you run around in this truck a thousand miles a month, it's fuel consumption might add $100 a month to your fuel bill.
For some people that's a lot, but for a person who's paying $2,000 a month in capital payoff and insurance, it's just part of the enjoyment of owning this car.
I would take 13.5 with the performance of a Raptor R. I have a Gen 2 and can't get 13 mpg after the engine failure/cam phaser replacement. Ford keeps saying nothing wrong with this.
Great number in my opinion. My Gen 1 6.2 would get that number.
The engine note is enhanced by the speakers.
At 0:40 it should have Tommy's voice over the 4 wheel drifting around the ranch.
How about testing fuel economy, 4wd auto versus 2wd. The difference will be interesting
Same mpg as my 02 LQ4 4x4 Yuke XL ... (but mine was a $1k and the headliner needs a razor knife trimming every 4vwks along with jute backing dust flying about at 65mph)
Considering my Gen 1 on 37s doing 10 MPG, this is actually great.
Roman, just consider the rain as being a nice car rinse. I hope that makes you feel a little better.
My buddy’s trx gets around 5-6 mpg local here in NYC
He must have it floored all the time. I average 10 with mine
Read the comment immediately below yours. Your ‘buddy’ is an idiot.
Awesome truck and for the performance I think it isn’t too bad!
Great review, awesome truck looks like a blast! Not that it really matters that much, but curious what was the average mph during the trip?
I couldn’t imagine someone paying $35-50k more for a Raptor R over a TRX. I’d go TRX either way but seriously the price difference is crazy.
You do realize Raptor R’s only come fully optioned right? The only option is the moonroof.
A fully loaded TRX is $108K
Dang that is about the same as the new tundra but the R actually gives you power
Roughly same fuel economy as the gutless 2020 tundra I used to have 😅
Shit, regular is over $4.50 here in Phoenix. We’re now tied to CA since the NM refineries shut down. Sucks.
Don't step over the hose. I learned the hard way and tore two muscles in one shoulder.
Love you videos and I love that track
I own a TRX and filling it up with 93 octane doesn't bother me at all. This truck is so stupid, so rowdy and and so fun, you get every penny's worth back in sheer fun driving theme stupid thing. Literally every single mundane commute has my giggling like a little girl. It's that stupid fun.
Just went to the auto show yesterday and there was no raptor R but they had 3 lightnings 😳🤯
I would pay $110k no problem. It’s that last $60k I have a problem with.
I have a trx on 37x13.5 18 BFGs and get 11mpg mixed 14mpg on hwy
My lifted 2016 landcruiser on 35’s got worse MPGs
If the the truck would go into 2wd only might squeeze 1 more mpg
Great video also that is one fantastic truck
If I owned this truck I'd prob be getting 6 mpg 😂
No kidding
I've had a 9mpg tank with our 22' TRX.... lengthy/memorable off-road day with friends. The memories are well worth the cost. No one says "Wow Bill, glad we took the Camry Hybrid today!" or "Chad, so happy we decided to use hand paddles and not the gluttonous engines on your Pontoon boat!"
Better than expected.
I love the looks of the new Ranger Raptor but don't think I would be happy with the MPG's and it shouldn't be as bad as one of these. Maybe a 2.3L tremor package or Tacoma hybrid.
You don't buy any truck with off-road focused anything if you value mpgs. If you don't need it just get a regular version. The Ranger Tremor only gets 17 city 20 highway or something like that versus 20/24 for a regular 4wd version.
@@302Mustang13 Those offroad tires just wipe out mpg's I guess. 20/24 is fairly acceptable. I guess the only kinda sorta green offroad truck is the 4xe wrangler.
I drive very conservatively in my Ranger Tremor.....mostly highway and rural...after 2 years of ownership I'm consistently pulling 23mpg overall avg or 10L/100km
I run 93 octane and expect a mild bump in the summer time. The truck is stock but I did change out the tires which aids the mileage greatly....dropped the M/T's for Goodrich Trail Terrains...they are sufficient for the back roads and mild trails I need to access.
Great little truck
@@jeffk464 the tires definitely do. Had buddy do something similar with his Sierra and he lost 4 mpg or so. If you live somewhere like Alaska or something remote like that I could see the point having them. Scoring points on your daily just to go around your suburban life and not even even go hunting or anything is laughable.
@@canuckrunamuk23 my dad has one of the new Ranger, an STX. I think he averages 23 or so mpg overall and maybe better.
My 2006 Jeep Wrangler 4.0 on 33" tires gets 12.3 mpg / 100+ HP 😅😂
Nobody is buying this for mpg, but comparing it to its competitors is always fun
thank you for the content, but why are we just staring at the center console
People who can afford the truck are 99% parked in the garage so MPG is not a corncern...hehehe
That's only two less than my 6100lb Tacoma TRD PRO. 🙄
Does it have a high compression engine? If not, that high octane fuel is the incorrect fuel choice...
13.5 mpg is a feature of these trucks
"If you want more horsepower and a slower truck, buy the Hemi" lol.
I mistakenly thought Ford had a better idea and to me, that would include a better fuel economy. Maybe Ford needs to go back to the future and take a second look at the second-gen raptor engines.
Smiles per gallon...😊
Better MPGs than I thought... At some point, I believe Ford is going to get the Lightning and Raptor together and make a love child. An electric Raptor would be interesting and plenty quick, but it's no V8.
Isn’t it rated at 15mpg highway from the EPA?
2014 Raptor (added Whipple supercharger) was iconic, 2017 was pathetic and sounded like a Dyson vacuum. 22' TRX daily with SLP's replacing factory resonators is perfection. Point is the V8 experience/sound/aura is organic... like an iconic rollercoaster in which the sounds of the track, wood trestles, etc. combine into an emotional experience. Something EV vehicles with their clinical/appliance aura will never replace. TRX was down for a month awaiting a new radiator, ahem 'Flower Child' era neighbors commented "Oh finally, you sold 'that thing' (seeing the rental/loaner). Glad it's back for the early morning cold starts.... if you don't get an HOA letter sometime in life, you're doing it wrong : )
I thought TFL Truck was Andres Spot ? Mr Truck and the Portly dude ? Why are you guys there ?
"Terrible gas mileage?"
I feel like this one of those Captain Obvious moments.
I'd never worry about might if I owned one. If you can't afford gas, you bought the wrong vehicle.
I want to see you dyno the two trucks
GD. Just filled up with 91 in TX for $3.79.
Guessing those 37s don’t help the fuel mileage at all. Switch to the 35s that the stock Raptor and the TRX have and you would be closer to the 16 the stock Raptor got I’m guessing.
The 3.5 Raptor can exceed 20 mpg if drive reasonably, throttle house reported 22, it is after all the same engine as the run of the mill F150's that manage 24. Drive the speed limit you'd be surprised what those turbo's will deliver.
@@Steve-yr5vi I have a 37" 2023 Raptor 3.5 and you'd be reaaaaaaaaaly hard pressed to get 20 MPG out of one. I'm talking maybe going 45 MPH with hardly any stops on some back road. My average over 3K miles is 16 MPG.
Typical Ford, I drove a Ranger for a week, had to turn off all the driver assit crap. It made me look like a drunk driver swerving back and forth. Kept telling me I was about to get in an accident even when sitting stopped at a light, when a semi would drive by. Adaptive cruise would nearly rearend a vehicle then slam on the brakes slow down then accelerate and do it all over again. It was scary to drive that Ranger with all the Assist enabled.
Why is it I never see any of these 100k trucks meant to be offroad ever on the trails only highways and malls ?
Curious what the MPG on a Raptor 37 is I would imagine somewhere between the base Raptor and the R
I have a 2023 3.5 with the 37's, I have about 2500 miles on it, and so far it's around 13-15 in town and pushes 17 on road trips with my light driving style ( old man) and occasional drag races in town.
Does it have the drive modes? We’re y’all in normal or did u try eco? Is there even “Eco” mode on that? 😂
Most people who buy these most likely have other more fuel efficient cars to drive along side this
2-wheel drive should of been used plus 37in tires vs 35 on the trx
trx is actually full time awd so it's ok, both about same set
Who cares what your fuel economy is. If you are driving a TRX or a Raptor, you don’t care about fuel economy.
But the real thing is. I’d much rather have the TRX than a Ford anything.
The real question is, where is the Chevrolet/GMC performance truck. Is there such a thing?
pretty efficient vehicle
It would be interesting to know the demands on the engine to maintain say, 70 mph on the road. 38 hp, 100 hp? How often are those powerhouse vehicles ever at their full potential? Without the nannies, you could probably spin the tires at 100 mph with the torque available😁.
Probably more than you think. The aerodynamics are pretty poor on this vehicle (lifted wide-body trucks are literally bricks flying in the wind), it would probably lose speed very quickly when off the throttle. Not to mention those massive AT tires would have a large rolling resistance coefficient plus the large amount of static weight added from their rotating mass . At 70 MPH, the resistant forces acting against this vehicle would be much greater than the forces acting against a regular f150 at the same speed. So this vehicle would need more output to maintain that speed. All that being said, I don't think you could spin tires in a vehicle like this at 100 mph. You'd need less weight , less grip and noticeably more horse power 😅
@@YerBoyTroy at this stage of my life, I’m finding out that I’m wrong about almost everything. The plus side, it does bring out a lot of information from others. 😉
Too bad about no column shift,a dorky dial?
Are we starting to see the upside of manufacturer requiring to build eco electric cars, so that they can continue to build us these powerhouses?
It's an awesome truck and 13.5 MPG isn't bad!And to the people complaining about it's cost.....it's not supposed to be attainable for the average person. It's a "super" truck. Enjoy watching videos of it and dream/figure out how to make residual income to afford it. Not everything in life should be accessible to all.
I’ll stick with my Lightning. Just as quick, better suspension for commuting and it a little cheaper to buy.
13.5 is pretty good
the trx was on 35s and the raptor is on 37s
Fuel mileage is the least of anyone's concern especially when buying something like this
It's not about MPG. 😂 It's about Smiles per gallon.
85 here in MT is 3.05/gln
The engineering explained guy said DO NOT reduce octane because you are at higher elevations.
What would you expect, it was never meant to be a Prius.
Not sure I believe Ford loses by 2 HP in reality. The Ford wins the drag race on 37" tires. They have a tendency to sand bag their numbers.
I would be more concerned about distance between fuel stops. Give me a big gas tank and I'll be happy.
It's got a 36 gallon tank.
13.5 mpg is worse than my first car 77 Pontiac Grand Prix
13.5 mpg while only having between 135 and 180 horsepower depending if it was a 301ci or 400ci
Or you can just add a K&N air filter to the Raptor R & get more than 2 hp more beating the TRX lol
Anyone wanting or driving super trucks do not care about fuel mileage let’s be honest lol
They are not smart enough to think about fuel economy
@@macbook802 I’ll take that lol 😂 I may not be smart but I drive with a hell of a big smile on my face!!!!! 😂
@@EastCoastFrank I will admit the raptor is a smooth riding truck but as far as capabilities go, I can do anything that 95% of drivers have ever done in any raptor with a 4 cylinder Chevy, Except acceleration of course.
@@macbook802 agreed! There’s no denying the capability of the raptor in any form. I don’t own one personally. I have a 2022 trail boss midnight edition with the 6.2 lol I never think fuel mileage. I fill my tank and smile like hell when I hear the roar lol 😂
@@EastCoastFrank I wonder how a fancy, high mpg, soft suspension truck would sell, like a platinum with 17" rims with more of a street tire, with the standard length a arms, but the raptor soft fox suspension.
If you want and can afford this truck you probably don’t care about fuel mileage in the first place. Or you would be buying the maverick if you cared or something similar for the mpg. I’d take the Raptor or TRX …..
I don’t think you buy these type of trucks for the mpg. And they are over priced like Superman is over powered
Incredible power, but horrid fuel economy for everyday living. If you don't blink at the price tag for that Raptor R, you won't care about the gas mileage. That is a small percentage of real world owners.
As for the automated driving "aids," I think they are more of a PITA to use due to tech glitches, and they're certainly more of a hazard due to drivers using them to be more distracted. Look at the accidents involving Tesla's "autopilot" mode that isn't ready to be an "autopilot." The tech needs much more development and refinement.
Ride is supposed to be more comfortable than the TRX according to all the reviews. Obviously gas mileage is irrelevant in a 700 hp supercharged V8. Regardless even at 10 mpg, can still go further than a R1T or Hummer EV truck
Yes, but the Hummer EV would require 2 gallons of gas to do what 5 does in the F-150. That means the Hummer would require $10.11 to do what the F-150 requires $20.95 to do.
Figure for Hummer is $.15 / kW with the EPA figure of 33.7 kW / gallon of gasoline and the $4.19 that they paid for the premium fuel.
@@ronaldking1054 While I understand your point, what is your time worth? The Raptor would have a full tank in less than 10 minutes. How many hours for the Hummer EV to have full batteries?
@@mikeadamson4605 No, it won't because you had to drive to the station. I don't. I also do not need to wait at the station for 10 minutes at all as I can be at my home relaxing while you had to drive there.
@@mikeadamson4605 I have never had to fill the tank of a car more than once a week, and the range on that car was not more 250 miles. The typical American does not drive how you claim they do.
@Ronald King sure they do. Im a typical American and I drive from Houston to Dallas regularly. Furthermore, it's about the ability to. A family wants a vehicle where 4 people plus their stuff can be packed in and go on vacation to somewhere more than 250 miles in. People regularly drive a LONG way for vacation and don't want to be adding hours to an already long trip. I'm not against EVs but it's ignorant to suggest they are as convenient as ICE vehicles.

Is there anybody in America that would’ve bought a Ford raptor for its touted fuel mileage? The whole idea is absurd.
