Hadn't fallen yet, gotta wait a month or two for that. This was a gift to the "youth of the nation" by Gorbachev, because they'd helped stop a coup attempt a couple months before. This is still very much the Soviet Union.

Absolute truth! Went to 2 Day on the Green concerts back in the 80’s when I was a teenager! The first one was: Day On The Green #2: Journey, Black Sabbath, Cheap Trick, Molly Hatchet, Shakin' Street, 415 (July 27, 1980)! The second Day on the Green was: Day On The Green #2: Foreigner, Loverboy, Scorpions, Iron Maiden (July 18, 1982). Loverboy and Scorpions had a little “battle of the bands” going for a bit. Both on stage and us fans went wild! It was freaking awesome!! Took my son’s cousin to see Metallica in St. Louis, around 1996/97 because he was the only one that liked them as much as I did!! Then around 1998 went with a friend and her husband to OzzFest, with Rob Zombie, Ozzy and NIN (nine inch nails). My last Rock Concert was The Hu in St. Louis in October 2019! I was going to see them again in Kansas City but this virus crap hit!! Waiting to get word on The Hu and new touring dates!!!

They just reach in and bring out something primal in you. It's unspoken and beautiful as well as terrifying in it's intensity. Going to a show and ending up completely drained physically, mentally, emotionally. Laryngitis for a week. Nothing like it. No race, no religion just Humanity United in our love of the music.

For the people saying “this was likely more around 500,000”, I’ve been to sports parades with over a million people in one area, I’ve been to Times Square on New Year’s Eve, I’ve seen it from aerial views. Look at this video again, look out at that crowd. I know the quality isn’t the greatest, but look at how far back the sea of people goes. Now look at how WIDE it is and how tightly packed all those people are. There is not a chance in hell there were less than 1 million people there for Metallica’s set. I’d argue the 1.6 million estimate is pretty damn close to what you see in those videos. Most people are gonna stay for the big bands, and Tushino airfield is absolutely massive and could easily hold that many people

The crazy part about this. it's not the biggest concert ever. This concert has an estimated crowd size of 1.6 million. So for head bangers it's the biggest heavy metal crowd ever but not the largest crowd, this show was in 1991. And at the time it was the largest but just 3 years later in 1994 Rod Stewart broke this record by doing a free concert event, in Rio for the poor which drew 3.5 million. try to imagine that number.

This concert was insane! I had a VHS documentary on it called "For Those About To Rock" If you think this is wild check out Creeping Death from the Concert , or a different band Pantera - Domination. Heaviest breakdown in metal. When it hits take Wu-Tang's advice and protect ya neck , 'cause that drop will give a headbanger whiplash.

I agree about "Creeping Death" Moscow '91 show! 1.6 million Russians chanting "DIE, DIE, DIE" is indescribable. Even though it's unlikely that they knew what the word meant, given that it was right after the fall of communism in Russia so English wasn't likely to be a language that most of them had been exposed to, it's still crazy to see/hear.

Yes there's quite literally over 1.5 million people that showed up. This was during the fall of communist Russia, more specifically the USSR, shortly after the Berlin Wall came down. It was the first time Russia had opened itself up and allowed something like this. The Russian people were starved for entertainment, any kind of entertainment, to let loose for a few hours. It was the Monsters of Rock festival that included several of the biggest bands at the time, including Metallica, Pantera, and AC/DC.
