There's a special energy about music from the 70s-80s. Everything was pure passion, people were creating future trends instead of following current ones.
In the late 80s and 90s A&R people wanted groups that sounded like known artists. Unsigned indie artists couldn’t catch a break. More and more clubs became pay-to-play and tribute bands became a thing (that I never understood). In the 2000s people wanted music for free (sharing/download). Many fabulous artists and their music remain unknown, not because they or the material wasn’t great, but they had to get a 9-5 in order to survive and support their family. The 60s-80s is where the creativity and originality in music exploded… Hopefully the unknown artists submitted their material to US Copyright Office, so at least their music didn’t or won’t die with them.
Back when this song was recorded blacks and whites (everybody really) got along better than they do now! Makes me think that almost no one of the 330 MILLION people in America are actually racists, the government just WANTS or NEEDS us to be divided along some "lines" so they can play their politics to "this or that" group of people. DRock6904, you are 100% correct! Music that is great can mend two peoples when they each decide to gather around it.
Maaan u musta forgot the civil rights struggle, the police brutality, the killings of those who spoke up etc back then. Keep living in ur fantasy world
Lmao no they didn't get along better then. But I can't only blame this commenter, folks have been spoon fed that revisionist version of history for years.
If you journey back to the early 70s there are many many white bands that have a lot of funk and soul in the music. People sometimes forget that rock music back then was extremely soulfull whether you were a white band or not.
I love this song. I have a single version of it on record. When my dad was a teenager he worked for a moving company and was given tons of records from a radio station they were hired by. This is one of them.
This song's commonly attributed to Leadbelly but recordings before him exist. It's either about a weapon, a whiskey, or a woman. I prefer it's all three
The first verse is about a musket popularly called Black Betty. It was very accurate when fired, and bam-ba-lam refers to the sound it made when fired. Someone made an "improved" version that failed because it couldn't be zeroed in for accuracy; in other words the damn thing gone blind. The second verse refers to a type of whiskey served in black bottles. It was at least 90 proof; in other words, very powerful stuff and "really gets me high". The third verse refers to a woman, any woman, living in Birmingham, Alabama. Probably a prostitute or a dance-hall girl who could "shake that thang".
Seeing your face when his soul poured out of his body 😆. There's a lot of good songs like this one classic southern rock. Lots of soul. Same reason I listen to Al Green, Marvin Gaye, Bob Marley, Aretha Franklin. Songs that are saying the soul has so much for meaning.

I'm a 66 year old white woman and I know the Rolling stones get their inspiration from lead belly muddy Waters there's even a video of them jamming, look for it it's brilliant, young black men don't know their own history
There's a lot of different takes on it, but most people agree that the black blues legend Lead Belly wrote this song or at least adapted an earlier version of it. Tom Jones even took a swing at it and then Ram Jam made it what everyone knows now, with a lot of popularity nowadays gained from the film "Blow". There's contention about whether "Black Betty" is an actual woman, pills or booze, but I think the important thing to recognize is that this song is straight up blues and its glory is owed to the masters of the craft, many of whom never get the recognition they deserve.

When that song played on the radio I always turned up the volume...it is a true battery charger! Was one of my favorites along with "Radar Love" "All Right Now" and Spirit in the Sky. There are to many favorites to mention.
My biggest ones are "Highway Star" or pretty much anything by AC/DC. If I'm driving when those come on (and/or "Black Betty) my ass is getting pulled over for at least 20 over.
I've known this song since my teens, I don't know how many times I've watched your reaction, it's so entertaining to watch others discover. Rock on man.

It's actually really wonderful to listen to it while smoking... it just exemplifies out all the noise... I get the same rush when listening to Kashmir Lounge live with the Egyptian Orchestra... it's just cosmic.

There actually was a black man behind it. His name was Leadbelly. One of the original blues artists from the beginning of recorded music. House of the Rising Sun, Where Did You Sleep Last Night?, Goodnight Irene. He was the first to record many slave working songs like Pick a Bale of C**ton, and Midnight Special. George Harrison once said "No Leadbelly, no Beatles."
@@jeffparker8636 I didn't censor. Cotton is/ was not the only crop ever grown or picked on a mass scale. This genre of songs was also sung by Prison chain gangs.
I need to say something. Especially when I was younger I felt insecure for liking so much music made my white people. I remember jamming with myself on this song in 2010 and I all forgot about this song. And now I see more people of my colour listening to these kinds of music, it's amazing!:D
Chris. I just checked it out. Loved it. Big fan of old Blues/BlueGrass music. But then again I like musical acts from the likes of KRS-One and GWAR all the way to Rachmaninov and Liszt. My musical appreciation far and deep. Thx for the heads-up again. I missed that one somehow.
It's not a colour thing , it's a technology thing. The moment when musicians ( of any colour) recorded separately in the studio along with a click track, all the life got sucked out of recorded music. Thats why this stuff resonates, the drummers pulse is real. Ps, great musical ear, your vocal was bang on.

@@matiyanv5835 Dear Matiyan, Thanks so much for asking! I worked as a secretary for the State Dept. Foreign Service, lived overseas for 20 years, and have been to over 80 countries. Morocco was one of my all-time favorites, as well as Ireland. I spent about a year working at our U.S. Consulate in Casablanca, and would take the train up to Fez and Tangiers, but mostly south to Marrakesh. I speak a tiny bit of French, but no Arabic, so that helped me in the south. In northern Morocco, they speak Arabic and Spanish. It breaks my heart that travel is almost impossible right now -- but in the future just try to go to any region you are interested in, as there is magic everywhere if you open your heart to it and reach out to people. If you are young, consider looking into jobs overseas. The State Department is severely underfunded right now, but that will change ... hopefully very soon! All the very best to you and your family. Sincerely, Lynn

Some of its bullshit .
I’d rather think they did them old blues guys justice by putting their thunder on them & revitalizing them for many more generations to come.
Lack of credit & Royalties, however, are a whole nother topic.
It really is, and some of these dudes are funny as hell, like this guy. Not laughing at him per se, but the reaction is great, because it sort of echoes how we feel about the songs, y'all are just very animated, and have a very unique way with words...
The pure joy in his face is exactly why I follow this page
Man, you really make me appreciate growing up in the seventies and eighties. I'm sooooo fortunate to grow up in a house that played every genre of music! My Mom had Al Green playing one minute, then Zepplin, Skynard, with a little James Brown & Charlie Pride sprinkled on! Countless tunes always playing! These reaction videos bring back my childhood! Music just touches the heart if the mind is open! LOVE, LOVE you Mr.V! Your reactions are priceless!
The problem with people is that they have forgotten that we are all connected. And I aint met a white boy yet that didnt like him some black Betty. Bam malam!♡

There's a special energy about music from the 70s-80s. Everything was pure passion, people were creating future trends instead of following current ones.
And the 60s!
People were creating future trends! So true 🎶🤘
It’s so fun watching you react to these classics we “oldies” grew up on. We had a blast back then!
F yes. 🤬
Bradley Young. I, so, agree with you. I was raised in the 60's as well and listened to every genre. Love this young man's reactions..

This is the greatest god damn thing I've ever seen!! You got a follower for life bro!
Can you believe 401 dislikes my God I'm a 51yr old white woman and love this music and love Mr Video!!
I prefer it's all three
OR about the whip that was used against the prisoners of that time.
Then Spiderbait ,about a car !
This is a reaction video in the truest sense of the phrase. I've seen all these other ones where they spend most of the time giving you their intellectual thoughts. This is an actual reaction. I have just subscribed to this channel. Carry on, sir! You bring the world joy!

A black man wrote this song. Leadbelly. Look him up - he wrote a lot of good shit.
Well he didn't write this..
I'm a 66 year old white woman and I know the Rolling stones get their inspiration from lead belly muddy Waters there's even a video of them jamming, look for it it's brilliant, young black men don't know their own history
It's actually an old slave spiritual they'd sing
You're all wrong. The British used black betty as a cadence while going to battle. Black betty was the name of their artillery.
He did a cover of it. There are many versions of it. It's from the Revolutionary War. Song is about a British musket.
This song is not originally by ram jam. And they didn't get paid much on this song. But they ram jammed it.
This should clear up any "different takes": ua-cam.com/video/BgvdA1MGCYo/v-deo.html
Regardless of the racist connotations, the song is a banger.
Johnny Depp walking through the airport scene 🔥
Black Betty is the personification of the whip used in slave days. This was a work song sung by slaves long before it was recorded.

I'm listening to Carlos Santana right now!!! Love him and his spiritual connection. I can feel it when he plays!!!
Legend has it the producer gave Ram Jam $500 to make a video, so they spent $450 on weed and beer and filmed the video in their back yard.
Just when you thought you had it figured out THEN !!! Here come Black Betty
When the levee breaks Led Zeppelin you'll love it.
@Fancy Boy definately my favorite, it was that or Black Dog... the lyrics might make him go crazy on that one! Lol

It's actually really wonderful to listen to it while smoking... it just exemplifies out all the noise... I get the same rush when listening to Kashmir Lounge live with the Egyptian Orchestra... it's just cosmic.
THE BEST. I always imagine a scene (that should be in a movie) where a group of young bank robbers are driving on an open road just after their most successful heist.
back when race barriers where already coming down, good ol southern rock, music was just music, I love it all!! Glad you could enjoy it like I did first time I heard it as a kid on the radio :)

Thank you for bringing this up because I was about to say it myself I think it's important to know our history.
The first to record, but that song is old AF. Prisoners used to sing it on the chain gang. Early early 1900’s
@Fletch it was a workline song. railroads, fields, etc. men working side by side, call and answer tune to work better in tandem

@@jeffparker8636 I didn't censor. Cotton is/ was not the only crop ever grown or picked on a mass scale.

I need to say something. Especially when I was younger I felt insecure for liking so much music made my white people. I remember jamming with myself on this song in 2010 and I all forgot about this song. And now I see more people of my colour listening to these kinds of music, it's amazing!:D
This song is originally by blues legend Lead Belly.
Thx. I didn’t know that. I’m going to check it out now if there is a vid on here.
And that's just part of it.
Isn’t this an old song that prisoners used to sing back in the 30s or sum
He also did house of the rising son amd where did you sleep last night.
Sometimes, I think we all aren't that much different. No matter the skin color. I love it when things bring us all togeather.
I love how he was skeptical at first then just started vibing once it started
It's not a colour thing , it's a technology thing. The moment when musicians ( of any colour) recorded separately in the studio along with a click track, all the life got sucked out of recorded music. Thats why this stuff resonates, the drummers pulse is real. Ps, great musical ear, your vocal was bang on.
Why everyone talking bout color, the song is dope that's all that matters
The world is about stupid color today. I was born in ‘73 never mattered to me a day in my life. White girl in the islands! No probs. Loving this vid
