Mr Lloyd, Metallica's Enter Sandman is utterly CRAP at best; the ONLY Metallica songs that are GREAT are those from albums released way back in the 80's; ie MASTER OF PUPPETS; and AND JUSTICE FOR ALL.

1.6 million people, 53 people died,

There were a few dozen injuries, no deaths! Considering that there were 1.6 million people there, that is extraordinary.

But it wasn't the biggest, there have been 3 concerts with over 3 million people Jean-Michel Jarre did it twice and Rod Stewart once (on Copacabana Beach). However, Metallica do hold the record for being the first musical act to perform a concert on every single continent (so that includes Antarctica) and that got them in the Guinness Book of Records.

Yeah, they thought that American heavy metal was going to make the crowd riot and bring down social order. Too bad they didn't realize that this was the best thing that ever happened to Russia. The people could now rock freely out in the open with no one busting down their doors and hauling their asses off to the gulag or whatever. The only thing that could make this better was if Metallica had played in the Red Square itself, to really piss off the KGB and the Kremlin. They couldn't, so they played in the Rock Tushino Air Field instead. Unfortunately, nothing like this sort of crowd capacity had ever been seen before and it was so hectic, 53 people died as a result of the rough movement and probably got bodied to death.

This is the exact recording of when I first heard Metallica. I was exclusively listening to rap back then, PE, NWA, EPMD, Gunshot, KOOL Moe Dee and so on. A friend brought over this Metallica record and I was blown away. A week later I'd bought a guitar, because I just had to learn how "to do that". Around a decade later, I moved to Moscow for a few years, where I lived and worked. Whilst there I went to visit a.friend in Tushino, not thinking anything of it. He said he had somewhere to show me and took me to that very airfield! Quite a surreal experience and cool at the same time.

I literarly heard this song yesterday and my GF reminded me of the last time I heard it, I created open cuts and abrasions on my right hand, hitting the gearshift as in playing hardcore air drums LOL. I almost did it again yesterday on the steering wheel. As an old man, I have been familiar with Metalica for a long time. That band has old roots. This song you reviewed is a classic now. Metalica has also performed orchestrial type music including a couple Christmas, rock type songs. Although they are not my favorite band, they have some great songs and licks. Thank you for your review. You personally sir have now brought me to open my mind to other music I ordinarily would not listen to, but interested in your review of them. I've been a Metallica fan since I was an angry 12 year old girl in St. Louis. I really got into thrash metal because I needed a genre of music that could adequately express the seething rage I felt inside, and I glommed onto the talent this band has for creating a sometimes gorgeous orchestral song that also kicks your teeth in. When I need the release of a good thrash metal album, I need songs that make me feel like I've been thrown around in a mosh pit: exhausted, beaten up, but ultimately empowered.
Please, for the love of all that is holy, listen to their debut album Kill Em All. 1981 or '82, I believe. That album contains (IMO) the single greatest, hardest, and most brutal songs in all of heavy metal: "Am I Evil?" I think you'll be impressed by their ability to tear your face off with music, much in the same way that Eminem does with hip hop but... medieval.

They're all great songs that have been part of my life for 3 decades at least, and I love them all. But I disagree. And I realise I'm in the minority. I think he should start with some of the songs from Hardwired. And _not_ the song with the same title, but probably Dream No More or one of the other epics from that album.

I was there as well. The sound near where I was at was a non point anyways. The crowd drowned out the sound of the speakers in most of the areas. It took us 16 hrs to depart the area after the concert so we did what a lot of people did and camped out. If you look behind the crowd in the distance those are not trees they are actually buildings. About a mile past that was the hotel we were staying at the time.
Just for information sake we traveled with Pantera for camera crew work. Which a lot of it was confiscated before we left. You can doubt me if you would like and unfortunately the only evidence I could provide is some of the photos I have of the concert with myself and the crowd. The only really compelling pictures are of the military and most of those were seized before we left.

Metal concerts can be dangerous however metal fans are some of the most caring you'll ever meet. They will push out open spaces if someone goes down so they can get back on their feet and they will carry people out who are injured.
The bands themselves keep an eye out for it, my very first concert I went to when I was 15 was Iron Maiden, during the gig the crowd collapsed and the band stopped the song until we'd all got back up. Was an epic night.

I had a similar experience at a Manowar concert. During that evening all were brothers and sisters of Heavy Metal looking out for each-other. When a guy, who looks like you don't want to encounter in a dark alley at night, offers you a hand, pulls you up, smiles, and gives you a quick hug to yell into your ear if you are ok, it puts stereotypes so much into a new perspective.

This was Summer, 1991, when the Soviet Union still technically existed (dissolved day after Christmas). For something like this to happen oun the outskirts of Moscow... it was purely unprecedented. The spring had been released from its pressure (note the heavy presence of Soviet infantry ("CA" epaulets - "CA" short for Sovietskaya Armiya) - many of them getting into it just like the crowd.
Metallica puts on a great show, period. Saw them here in Charlotte, and the pyrotechnics were so intense we could feel the heat in the suites (and this is way after James Hetfield, lead singer, suffered second- and third-degree burns due to a misfire while he was almost standing over the vent). At the end, Lars (drummer and original band member, along with Hetfield) mentioned their first show iin Charlotte in 1983 - and promised, "We're f***ing coming back!!!" Their fans are loyal, but they are loyal to their fans too, very much. Not so common.

According to the internet there have been larger concerts in other countries, but I doubt there has ever been a more EPIC show. When you look at the names of the top 3 bands who performed, it's like watching Eminem Drake and Kanye (strictly based on units sold in this case. Pick your 3 faves or whomever you'd argue is 3 most impactful rappers ever) doing a show together or something. I didn't discover this until HS in the 2000s but theres a documentary video you can find on the show in general that is totally worth watching.
