It was free. Those were military helicopters. The military was used fir security. The Russians didn’t know what to do with that kind of crowd ….. and in the beginning they beat allot of fans ….they were frightened by that energy. They had to stop the concert and talk to the military commanders and explain that this was normal behavior for a rock concert. And then they had to ask the crowd to calm down a bit or they would not be allowed to continue. There is a documentary on UA-cam about the whole event. It’s well worth watching.
The opening music is "Ecstasy of Gold" by Ennio Morricone, from the movie "The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly. I saw a comment somewhere "Hitler sent 150 divisions and failed. America sent four guys with long hair."
It was held at an airfield…..It was a concert with Pantera and AC/DC as well……a promise to the young people as part of glasnost……I’m sure most probably couldn’t hear much….but it was a “happening”……something to tell your children and grandchildren that you were there. An historic event.
It was a free concert (AC/DC and several other huge artists and groups played there as well). Just to clarify it for you... there was 1.6 Million in attendance over the course of the 3-day festival. It was called the Monsters of Rock Festival hosted by MTV (that's why it was free😉). The helicopters were there initially for security/crowd control. But they soon realized that the Helicopters were providing some MUCH-needed air circulation for the crowd. There were 100's of cases of heat exhaustion as well as muggings, a few sexual assaults, and other acts of violence that occurred during the festival. And sadly... there were also 56 deaths. While that is sad, horrifying and tragic... all-in-all, those statistics aren't bad considering there were 1.6 million people.🤷♀😅 Anyway, great reaction guys (I just subbed!😊)!!! Peace and light...💞 EDIT: just to touch briefly on what was going on at the time in the world (I was only 19y/o)... this festival was held during the fall of the "Iron Curtain". It was a CRUCIAL time in world history, the Soviet Union had crumbled and Russia was simply Russia again!!!👊😊 People came from all over the world (hence all the different countries flags being held in the crowd!😉). They gathered there not only to enjoy the music, but more importantly... celebrate with the Russian people and celebrate their new-found freedom!!! Not only were the Russian citizens free to enjoy Rock music openly... the world could breathe a little easier knowing the threat of the Soviet Union starting a Nuclear War was over!!❤
The USSR hadn't fallen yet. This was a concert provided to the citizens by the government as a thank you for helping to stop a coup attempt. Shortly after this concert was held, the USSR government collapsed.

@@tinagilbert8902 What are you talking about? That's exactly what I said. You said, and I quote, "the Soviet Union HAD crumbled and Russia was just Russia again." That's wrong. As you just said in this comment, the USSR hadn't fallen yet. It fell weeks later. It may have been collapsing, but it hadn't collapsed yet. That's a huge distinction. Here's evidence to that FACT: "By 1991, hard-liners who once enjoyed absolute power had become restive as they saw their and their party’s control start to slip. In a desperate move to regain control, they seized Gorbachev and mounted a coup. On August 19 they announced that Gorbachev was “indisposed” and unable to govern. But this dramatic move proved to be a miscalculation with disastrous consequences for their cause. The plotters were horrified by the subsequent uproar, with protests erupting in major cities throughout the Soviet Union. They turned to a traditional totalitarian solution and sent in the army to restore order. When soldiers refused to fire on their fellow citizens-as dramatically symbolized by pictures of future Russian leader Boris Yeltsin addressing a Moscow crowd from the top of a tank-the coup was over...The attempted coup all but ensured that the U.S.S.R. would fall apart...Gorbachev returned to Moscow on August 22, 1991, after the coup had failed. The Soviet Union came to an end on December 31, 1991." ---www.britannica.com/topic/1991-Soviet-coup-attempt Kind of hard to hold a concert after the USSR "came to an end," as the article states, when it happened on the last day of the year. Especially since the concert was held on Sept 28th. Last time I checked, September comes before December on the calendar. So, again, as I said, the USSR hadn't fallen until AFTER the concert happened. Please, do tell me where I said anything about it being "a desperate attempt by the Soviet regime" in my comment. I'm not seeing it, no matter how hard I look. Yes, I'd heard from ones that it was a "thank you" concert. It makes a lot of sense that it would be since it was the rioting people at the coup attempt that caused it to fail. It also was held shortly after the attempt. That's why, hearing it was a "thank you" to the citizens is more likely than it just being a random concert. Especially since it was the largest ever allowed. I have never found any evidence to the contrary, anywhere. Unless, and until I do find evidence to contradict what I had been told, that's what I'll state. "Oh," and no, there'd never been a "Monsters of Rock" festival in the USSR before. They'd had other festivals and concerts called other things, but there'd never been such a major concert allowed before. And never had there been one called the "Monsters of Rock." I haven't been able to find any evidence, whatsoever, that the "Monsters of Rock" festival was ever held in the USSR prior to 1991. Everything I've been able to find says that it was the 1st time that that festival had ever been held there. So, please. Do tell me what "B.S." you're referring to in my comment, specifically. And please, provide evidence that what I said was in fact wrong. You just saying what I said was wrong doesn't make it true. I expect links to reputable sources, such as I provided.

Hello from Albuquerque NM. Love your reactions. If you look out in the crowd you can see speaker towers throughout. Not sure if everyone can hear them but there are speaker towers out there. Ive seen Metallica three times. 1983 was the first. Great live band.
You've now become my favorite reactors. I like your naturalness and emotionality. But this time I would like to remind the world of the singer János Kóbor from Omega, who died of Covid on December 6th, 2021.
I loved her reaction to the two big 60's social commentary songs- "The Year 2525' and "Eve Of Destruction" that have caught fire here with these reactors.lately. Tony had heard 2525, and was so patient, as he nursed her through, multiple pauses, so she could clarify what the lyrics just went by her, and digest them. He had that devious grin on his face, as he would ask her; "are you ready to continue". She gutted it out, and actually loved the music part of it. The lyrics and social messages for the female part of these two person reactor teams, really were aghast at the images shown during the videos, as well as the messages. Don't get me wrong, it wasn't just the females, their were plenty of males with these reactor teams, that needed it stopped to digest what they were hearing and seeing. Both songs came out in the mid-late 60's. Both artists were one hit wonders.
Whatever people might say, if they don't like Metallica or they liked them but don't like the change in their sound, no one can deny that they are probably the biggest rock/metal band in the world and I, personally, think they deserve it. I used to be a big fan, I guess my entrance into metal began with their music and I went to their concert in 2003. It was a spectacle here in Serbia. It was on a stadium and I remember me and my friend found ourselves in the sea of people. And I am kind of short so I couldn't see a thing, even though we were not too far, we were somewhere in the middle, so I stepped on a fence and stayed there for the entire concert, because it was the only way for me to see it. And all my body hurt so badly for three days after that, but I didn't care, I was happy. 😂 So I really cannot imagine 1.6 million of people, it is surreal to me too. Anyway, if you want to check more, you should listen to their "S&M" album. I think you would like it. It's a colaboration with symphonic orchestra. My suggestion would be "No leaf clover" (which is also my favorurite Metallica song), but the whole album is really good.
🇬🇧 Norfolk with you guys, Still looking for my car😂if you were to crowd surf from the back you would never make it to the front before the gig was over 😂

If you wanna see a part of the ugly thing about this Concert watch E.S.T - Bully ua-cam.com/video/i6nZDw9fPeU/v-deo.html See the last part of Video and see how close if was to get really out of hand.
Not the Counting Crows but The Black Crowes, and yes they stopped the concert several times that day to calm down the crowd and military forces and this docu is proof of that, a lot of people got hurt that day because the military didn't knew how to handle such a big crowd, a lot of people got billy clubbed that day. ua-cam.com/video/NncZulabJMI/v-deo.html
Legend has it people are still leaving that field today...🤔 To be fair, rod Stewart played to 3.5 million in Rio.. The helicopters were being used there in Moscow to cool the people down and some folks did die at that concert. I was a 21 year old back then, here in England, wishing I was there.. Glad I ain't there now..🇺🇦
Every Reaction to this video always notice the Helicopters. When you are in an outdoor crowd even half that size, you would understand the need for them. To move the air. You will be only one of several people with body heat, sweat, smoke and lack of oxygen. Where in this crowd do you see vendors or bathrooms? The Helicopters move the air around and out from the crowd or people will die of Heat exhaustion and suffocation. Bring with you LOTS of water, med kits, food and something to pee in. Sound Savage, but think about how long it would take from getting from the center front of that stage facing the army personnel to the outermost edge of that crowd, any direction? Back then humans were made of tougher material, no personal space or shame.
NOPE... it was 1.6 million in attendance over the course of the 3-day long festival. The official title was "The Monsters of Rock" Festival and it was hosted by MTV (for their channel)... that's why it was a free concert. Even though it was free to concert goers... MTV made huge money off it. Just sharing. Peace and light...💞
I don't think it would be free, I can't remember what we paid, it was in the UK and it was 75,000 people that seemed loads. Andrei you must know this song it's an anthem everyone knows it.
Nobody really knows how many people were there, they started counting at the gates but realised people were climbing in over fences so could well have been more. There have been bigger concerts, for example Rod Stewart had over 3 million on Copa Cabana Beach so that's not a claim Metallica can make. They can however say they are the only band ever to play a concert on every continent, including Antarctica!
This was After the collapse of the USSR in 1991, helicopters are to watch for people in trouble that need medical help. Ground medics would not be able to get through. So it's a medical lookout, as I believe 19 people died. Trample and squished.
Well, the military was there to keep the people in control. Of course there were medics all around, but they also needed the military, because so many people are difficult to keep under control. And they didn't have the experience. Especially at a rock concert that big.
Nice and honest reaction. If this was impressive, watch their song Harvester of Sorrow from the same concert. The military was not kind to the crowd... ua-cam.com/video/R22xm1PTBL8/v-deo.html
How in the hell do you prepare yourself mentally to perform knowing one million people will be standing right in front of you watching you play live, seriously! lol
The number of attendance at this concert is a myth and grew over the years. This concert was held on september 28 1991 at Tushino Airfield in Moscow and was part of the Monsters of Rock festival that toured that summer in Europe. Don't forget that Russia still was a communist country on that day and was on it's last legs, a month prior this concert there was a failed coup attempt in the USSR and the people wanted a concert to celebrate the end of decades of supression by a communist regime. Yes a LOT of people came to this free concert but the 1.6 million attendance number is once again a myth because nobody knows, counting the attendance number of a free concert while your regime is dying isn't really a top priority if you ask me...
This was a free concert..it was to promote a Drug free lifestyle...it's was at a Russian air force base..they expected a half million people..1.6 million showed up...I wonder how many of them understand English

Of course I wasn't at this concert, I was 7 years old at the time. I heard that this festival (there was also a Pantera playing, AC/DC) was held at the airfield in Moscow. I look myself and also don't believe my eyes how many people)
By the way, when Ramstein played at the Rock over the Volga Festival in 2012, then 307,000 people came, which is also a lot)
Sabaton played before 550K at Woodstock Poland in 2012.
It was great luck for bands playing in Europe at that time in 91'. They wanted rocking bands for the show and looked to who was playing in EU at that time. And sure enough Metallica was in Europe
So I really cannot imagine 1.6 million of people, it is surreal to me too.
Anyway, if you want to check more, you should listen to their "S&M" album. I think you would like it. It's a colaboration with symphonic orchestra. My suggestion would be "No leaf clover" (which is also my favorurite Metallica song), but the whole album is really good.
🇬🇧 Norfolk with you guys, Still looking for my car😂if you were to crowd surf from the back you would never make it to the front before the gig was over 😂
If you look close, you can see me. 496th row back, 1385 from the left. I'm wearing a blue shirt.
Greetings fellow 🇬🇧Norfolk! Top reactors to top tooons!
❤
This was not just a Metallica Concert, Pantera, AC-DC, Counting Crows. And a local Band by the name of E.S.T.
If you wanna see a part of the ugly thing about this Concert watch E.S.T - Bully ua-cam.com/video/i6nZDw9fPeU/v-deo.html
See the last part of Video and see how close if was to get really out of hand.
@@JeffreyBos75 You are correct, I was Black Crowes dunno why I got those two mixed up.
several people died in the crowd that day..
54
there was over a million people there
I bet you gave your little brother that Metallica t-shirt!! It was red, so the color is definitely switchable. Maybe?? 😊
good stuff my guys
Legend has it people are still leaving that field today...🤔
To be fair, rod Stewart played to 3.5 million in Rio..
The helicopters were being used there in Moscow to cool the people down and some folks did die at that concert.
I was a 21 year old back then, here in England, wishing I was there..
Glad I ain't there now..🇺🇦
Whatever the amount of the crowd was just the sheer noise of the crowd would drowned out the band because they would basically have the scream
Talk, talk, talk, talk,🥱🥱🥱🥱🥱🤐🤐🤐🤐🤐🤐
Imagine you have to go to the toilet in that crowd. I guess you just let it flow.
they did a show for moscow and moscow showed up
For a moment we thought USSR was going to be OK...
USSR died a few weeks later, so no.
the 1.6 million folktale is an internet invention
NOPE... it was 1.6 million in attendance over the course of the 3-day long festival. The official title was "The Monsters of Rock" Festival and it was hosted by MTV (for their channel)... that's why it was a free concert. Even though it was free to concert goers... MTV made huge money off it. Just sharing. Peace and light...💞
@@tinagilbert8902 it was only on for one day not three days
More Tool please! 😵💫 love you guys
If I remember correctly, Metallica was/ is the only band to perform on all 7 continents 😊
I don't think it would be free, I can't remember what we paid, it was in the UK and it was 75,000 people that seemed loads. Andrei you must know this song it's an anthem everyone knows it.
It was free. A concert for the people. It was a festival with more metal and hard rock bands.
The crowd disappears over the horizon.
I wonder how long it took just to get to a bathroom/toilet. Oh my..........
Hey GUYS Metallica just released a Brand new song today you guys have to check out!!!!🤘🤘🤘🤘
This was After the collapse of the USSR in 1991, helicopters are to watch for people in trouble that need medical help.
Мне понравилась девушка, она все эмоции высказывала губами и языком, это было очень красиво и сексуально. Жаль еë постоянно прерывали.
Nice and honest reaction. If this was impressive, watch their song Harvester of Sorrow from the same concert. The military was not kind to the crowd... ua-cam.com/video/R22xm1PTBL8/v-deo.html
The day that never comes. The Unforgiven l, ll, and lll. Turno the page. Check it out 👀👀
the end of the cold war, the time of great hopes, which were not justified at all. what naive fools we were!..
How in the hell do you prepare yourself mentally to perform knowing one million people will be standing right in front of you watching you play live, seriously! lol
I’m sure Andrea would look perfectly wonderful in skin tight jeans 😂
This was a celebration of the fall of Communism in Russia. I'm not sure but I think it was the first time american rock bands played there.
Where are the toilets around here?
Where are those 1.6 Million Russians now? Even the Chinese show more resistance.
They just got back home from the show😂
After the fall of communism in USSR
Rammstein and Metallica.... Seeing yr reactions, is like me: rammstein and metallica... it's enough.
They stopped counting at 1.6m people. That many people dont actually take up alot of space when packed in like that
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
I mean there's definitely at least hundreds of thousands of people there, wouldn't be shocked if there was 1.6 million if not more
first
This was a free concert..it was to promote a Drug free lifestyle...it's was at a Russian air force base..they expected a half million people..1.6 million showed up...I wonder how many of them understand English
no one ever reported 1.6 million at this event
@@RoverWaters Even if there were "only" 800.000 people, could you really tell the difference by looking at the crowd?
Я был там мне было 17 лет😄🇷🇺🤟
