Huge credit to your parents for sailing you to Iceland and much more. Resposible, self-reliant, adaptable, no drama, no self-pity, etc. Please can you educate school teachers, high schools, universities across the world. Even the editing & choice of music, great.
Excellent video, especially when you were able to show footage of the seas. I've sailed for forty years, and have been in some horrendous conditions. I love your ability to accept what mother nature gives you. It's obvious you have normalized some of what you do on deck. Watching you video yourself as you talk in the cockpit, as your boom is lurking behind you. It doesn't take much for a line to snap, or fitting give way, and the preventer to let go. The boom is the #1 killer, by the way of head trauma, and pushed overboard. Your boat has been remarkable , she's an angel. Out of the few sailing you tubers, I think you may be one that doesn't complain about everything,or have self-pity on how" tough life is". Also love your handle, from an old hippie/ sailor.
Can I ask a question? As a protected bay and coastal sailor, when did you learn to accept Mother Nature? I grew up near the sea and when I saw storms and their waves I always thought, thank goodness I'm not out there! I see what sailors like Holly and others share and I think there's something else that they have. When does the confidence appear? Do you just say f*** it I'm going? I guess I'm just talking to myself because I've done some things that scared me and I'm not dead yet, but the ocean! Shit. Just thinking out loud, no worries.
@@pdutube think your question is 3 fold. Questions that take on many layers from childhood, and can't be answered in full, in a comment gallery. To put it into a handkerchief form. You probably don't recall, I know I don't. But the voyage from the womb to open air is extremely dramatic, and is a comparison that is hard to compare. But yet, for those of us who are on the planet we all took the same journey [This may be where the confidence appears]. I think most living is not on how one does it, or how one looks on how one does it, but how we perceive the reasoning. I'm not a religious person, but I am spiritual. I am mother nature's child, as we all are. But some children are shy, others are bold, bold meaning, adventurous. It's part DNA, and the endless journey, that does go beyond our mental capacity as humans. I don't think it's to say f**k it, then one would never adventure. It's probably more like breathing, it's something that a person has to do. This goes for any extreme sport, or a style of life one wants to live. I guess it's about those who fear, and those who control it, and the difference on how individuals categorize it. I'll have to end up with, I don't base a lot on visuals that can be edited. I take it all with a pinch of sea salt. But one who has experience can pretty well come to a true conclusion. There are people on land who live in terrible conditions, and live life with a tumultuous burden. To some out at sea does not sound anymore difficult. To quote a line from Gordon Lightfoot: "Does anyone know where the love of God goes ,when the big waves turn minutes to hours". Though it's about the water. It also is a metaphor in life.. To Quote, Billie Holiday; "God Bless The Child That Has His/Her own." As I said, much to much to unpack.
What a nice video, i have more than 145000 nautical miles in my life, single-handed in the early 80s and was also a member of the volvo ocean race in 2006, which fulfilled my biggest dream. Unfortunately, I'm seriously ill and I can't sail anymore, which is the worst thing there is for me. But when I see your video, I'm back on board and feel this absolute calm, thank you very much for the great videos.

I loved the reality of this passage as you shared it with us. You're a playful nut, and a seasoned sailor that knows when to be scared/concerned and when to not. Same here. I've watched a lot of channels since I decided to learn to sail, but Holly and Sam are the only two I have watched consistently since the beginning of my journey. Another great passage video, I would love to know whether your windvane held you on course throughout that 3 day storm, and all the subsequent squalls. Would be great if in the quieter seas, you could give us a little chart update, by zooming out on your plotter and showing us your course, and which way weather was pushing you etc. Just interested in the navigation side, but generally great footage.
Good points! The windvane did pretty well in the big stuff. It does have a tendency to round up on the bigger waves, but that can be mitigated by tweaking the sail balance
