  • Peter and RaRa were in the mood to create some images using things a little outside the square, so Peter grabbed some strange things from around the studio to see what effect they would give him. In this tutorial, he uses an old mirror, a tilt shift with a super long lens, and also a 110 year old lens and you will see how unique they all look.

    Love playing with older gear, before I got into working in Television I lugged around an old Canon AE-1 set and a few lenses, nothing spectacular, but serviceable. Later wanting to experiment with medium format I bought a (and you're going to cringe) Hartblei inspected Kiev 88 and 4 lenses for only $500 CDN so with that I learned how to be patient and set up a shot rather than reacting to one, and the pictures produced were more than acceptable for what I paid for that set, and as far as I know my Brother's oldest boy who lives in Vancouver now has it, so it's getting every penny of that $500 that I bought it for in 1989/90-ish squeezed out of it!! Thanks for the play with the gear, really enjoy how you utilize that really old bellows cased lens,...might have to try that with an old Voigtlander I have upstairs in a box of things from my Dad. Cheers - Dave

    Lovely use of the old uncoated lens. They do have a magic of tehir own. I have a few of these old folding cameras, the oldest is a 6.5X9 Voigtlander Avus with an uncoated Skopar lens. I think the camera is from 1929 or 1930. It is capable of producing outsatnding images full of character with the modern 120 film. I also loved the mirror idea, probably because I have used that trick in the past myself.

    for amateurs like me - who would see this picture where you used tilt-shift - i would think its just fake and you post-processed blur in the editor afterwards. I know its all about knowing/having experience. What i try to say is - its not "natural" to dummies to see tilted sharpness/blur and its great to see mirrorless to pick up on the sharpness like you showed in video (old DLSR guy here) so thank you!!!

  • @cecilsharps
    @cecilsharps Рік тому +1

    couple of thoughts on increasing the contrast the analog way.
    with that first press camera you can pull the lens off the lensboard slap it on a copal to m42 adapter and then m42 bellows to digital body. I did this with an old burke @ james and a series of extension tubes. Pair that with a lens hood you hold over the lens and it should improve the contrast a bit. It's a bit of a cludge but works well. If that's to rube goldberg put a bit of black tape over the shiny bits of the camera's lens mount.
    The easiest way to improve the contrast without purchasing additional kit would be to adjust your lighting. Put the black backing on your lantern softbox and don't shoot it with white seamless. I shoot with a few uncoated lens and quite a bit of single coated lenses. When shooting pre war lenses you have to tailor the light to the maximize the lenses strengths and minimize their weaknesses.
    hope this helped or sparked a creative idea

Would using the "dehaze" filter have done the same thing, or is there a reason to use black point instead of dehaze. Also thank you for this; it looks so fun, and I will definitely be trying the mirror idea in my studio soon!

    • @PeterCoulsonPhotographer
      @PeterCoulsonPhotographer  Рік тому +1

      Thanks so much Shane, glad you enjoyed this and it inspired you. Dehaze will do a similar thing but tends to add a non linear contrast where as black point gives you a linear contrast. Nice pictures, but an average person taking pictures could not achieve that look without the expensive software. Luckily, we are in the digital age and can do that. If you had an old SLR with 35 mm film, how would you achieve that look. The average person with a digital camera and no software would have to adjust the camera settings, the lighting and take several shots to get something similar. It seems that all the magic is in that software. Don't get me wrong, Love the shoots and learn allot from them. Just don't have the software to manipulate the photos. Keep the shoots going. Thanks
