Simple Lighting For A Garage Studio

- We receive lots of comments and emails from photographers, as well as hear from them on workshops, that they don’t have a ‘proper’ studio and have converted their garage into a studio, and would like to know what lighting set ups they can use with limited space. For this tutorial, we used Peter’s movable walls to create a space in the studio the size of the average garage and moved RaRa around showing you how you can light a garage studio!

Crazy. I've been in my new apartment one week. I'm up in the middle of the night. And I literally just opened up my tripod and stuck one corner of my tripod into the furthest corner of my dining room to start to sort out my photography setup. And I open UA-cam and this video is up. Awesome.
Hope you enjoyed it
Yes. I love it when you are doing photography and showing the lighting setup and then the images on the computer.
Loved watching RaRa use her shoulders to give great shapes. Loved Peter’s use of lighting as always. The mention of the strong diagonal chin shadow being rather historical was one of those “oh ya” moments. Should have known that, but not consciously, maybe not at all. So, thanks again, all three of you. Love this channel.
Thanks Edward
As a Brit: 6x6, that's not a small space/garage!
As a Brit living in Japan: What's a garage? 6x6 sounds like a big living space though.
😅😅
Seriously though, nice video!
Thanks
Hi, interesting presentation of the possibilities in such a space. Gave me some ideas of what i might try out. Although a space where i might get hold of wold be like 3m x 5m (maybe move some furniture to get to 3m x 7m). Not so cool as Your garage though...
Oh, the digital age. I used my living area that had a vaulted ceiling. I placed hooks to where I could use a pipe and put rolls of paper on them to pull down and have the background. Not only that, I could switch from Black to White or even Blue paper backgrounds that I had. Then I placed the lighting off to the side and behind the camera was a set of windows for natural light if needed. There was no digital photography back then, so I had to shoot rolls and rolls of 35 mm pictures. I had to manually set the camera F-stop and hope it was right for the look I wanted. After developing the pictures and looking at my notes to what the settings were when I took the shot, was I able to get the right picture I wanted. Loved the shoot and information on smaller areas. Brings back good memories.
Thank you
Only on this channel that I can understand simple (yet complicated) use of lights to create fabulous shadows ... and therefor great pictures :) Thanks very much for that. 👏👍
Wow, thank you!
Great GaRARAge video guys
Thanks for sharing !!
Thanks RS :)
From the car park shoot to the home garage... in my case I’d have to move a small car, lawn mower and a few of kayaks to get a light stand in. But what you always bring is that calm, eyes open way of dealing with what you have to work with. And looking for pictures as they happen vs what you think you need.
Thank you
Great video. Informative and useful.
Glad you liked it
Amazing! ❤️❤️❤️ RaRa is stunning.
Thank you! 😊
Peter, this video really talks to me. The in house studio I just finished is similar in dimensions. And the garage is a match. Thank you for doing this. Lots of notes taken. Cheers! And as usual RaRa is great.
Thanks Chris
My watch before heading to work. Thank you
You're welcome!
Good as many people's don't have big areas
Many thanks for this new indoors backstage session.
@Bec: Many thanks for assisting in this session, for recording with the video camera and for supporting the Model.
@Rara: Many thanks for coming back to Australia to work with Peter and Bec, you are the best ever Model.
@Peter: The photography (5.27) with black and white (50% - 50%) as background is amazing, I think I have never seen anything like this in this channel. In some way, this idea can also be applied in outdoors, agains 2 walls (corner) for example, where one of them is directly lighted by the sun, and the other one shaded . I am aware this was not the purpose of the session, but it just came to my head.
I like a lot the poses at 5:58, and 8:23
@Rara: I always wanted to know what comes to your head when you look at the camera, with those serene eyes. My thinking is that you know how to leave the problems far away.
@Peter: The cover photo makes me regret not having learned the art of painting.
Just love the simplicity of these videos. No one else does this. Thanks Peter and thanks for being sassy Beck. P.S. could you share the camera model and lens choice and very briefly explain why that is your choice over the competition? Best Regards to you both.
Thanks, All the gear used is in the description, click See more,

Also, camera gear is a very personal choice. It's like saying why do you drive a BMW and not a Mercedes? the best thing you should do is take other brands out for test drives and work out which camera, lens set up works best for your look.
yes we will try that
@@PeterCoulsonPhotographer Agreed 👍🏻 I’m using the Nikon D850 at present for portraits, weddings and landscapes. I also have a 500CM and a M3 but those in a totally different ball park. I would like to have something with body image stabilization that offers the best in optics and works really well in studio and with mixing strobes and ambient light and with superb dynamic range and simplicity of use. Can you make a suggestion? Also, any chance you will do a workshop in Toronto or Milan ?
I'm loving the Leica SL2 it has my feel about it, Milan next year sorry
@@PeterCoulsonPhotographer no Mercedes and no BMW .... Porsche is the only way to go !
Great lighting tips and video. Thanks.
Glad it was helpful!
This was an awesome tutorial and really showed that I am not taking advantage of the space I have. Definitely going to be trying this out to see how I can use this. Looking forward to the NYC workshop.
Glad it was helpful, see you in NKC
Great video! I live in Texas and my garage is huge. Time to move some tools around and make a studio
Go for it!
I love when you work with Rara because you work so well of each other. And Bec, don’t sass us Americans because our government can’t figure out what a meter is. Ahhh, never mind, sass away, I’m used to it 🤪. Thanks, as always, for the video.
Thanks for watching
Just wanted to say I love watching your videos! Because is awesome and I respect how you interact with everyone. Awesome content. Thank you for all your wisdom
Bec is Awesome
I appreciate that!
Subscribed 👍🏼

Thanks Peter lots of ideas to take away.
Very welcome
Always enjoying those shoot scenarios Peter showing
Thank you
That was brilliant Peter and so useful for so many people like myself 🤘
Thanks :)
Great tips that can be used anywhere. Thank you for your videos.
Glad you like them!
Love your work
Thank you!
Always enjoy your content. Thank you for all you give to the community.
My pleasure, thanks
Real world. Thanks!
Love this.. I prefer to bounce light to get that beautiful clean soft light. Totally not into the straight-on flash although sometimes it works for me. Still enjoy to see your work. Thanks for posting
Thanks Mike
Hi. I live in UK and I am doing family photography in my living room 4x3m
new 4 x 3 tutorial coming soon
ua-cam.com/video/m1Ej8z7aDDA/v-deo.html
Don’t worry about using metric I live in the us and refuse to use imperial measurements in my photography XD
Thanks for teaching.
My pleasure
Great idea
Were these shots based off a black frame to start Peter? Sorry if you mention it later, I’m commenting as I watch it 😂
Pretty good, but it would be more accurate if there was folding patio furniture stacked up, old paint cans, and leftover lumber in there...
At least, that''s what was in *my* garage! 🙂
Thanks as always for a great video.
..Joe
Thanks for the tips!
Great video guys, very welcome in the UK as our double garage spaces are usually 5.5 x 5.5m with 2.2m roof - this is what I have myself. Very interesting and informative thanks!
Thanks for sharing!
@@PeterCoulsonPhotographer Could you do more on this subject and show us how you cope with softboxes etc. with low ceiling height please guys?
Yes planing it now 😁
Peter, do you ever use the colored paper backgrounds? I saw them hanging on the wall. Big fan. Cheers.
Sometimes but not very often
Hi Peter, thank you for your videos, thoroughly appreciated. One question for you is what sort of materials are you using for the pre fab walls ? They appear to be quite lightweight and easy to manoeuvre.. thanks mate 😎✌️
Thanks hope this helps ua-cam.com/video/xa8vL5x05-o/v-deo.html
Thanks for another video. About measurements 6*6m is aprox 20*20ft
Awesome thanks :)
6x6 m is 19.5'x19.5. my 2 car is 24x20 so close enough! i just have it jammed full of 'non-photography' gear... its just under 12' tall so it would be fabulous but too much stuff...
camera clubs hate this kind of lighting. a PERFECT REASON to use it then! camera clubs seem to be pretty pretentious and ive NEVER joined one after talking to them for about 12 seconds
Thanks for that LOL
Grrreat video
Great video for us non professionals. How to get models to work in a garage, lol. (Maybe you Bec, lol.) Thank you.
Happy to help!
Great video Peter, what lights are you using are they profoto d2’s?
Thanks Profoto D2
Thanks for the awesome video Peter, the issue I have found shooting in small spaces are low ceilings bouncing too much light and losing its direction and focus.
Thanks paint the ceiling grey
Lol Yes Bec we know
We use feet and inches in the uk 😄
Britain is officially metric in line with the rest of Europe according to Google
normal 6x3.5 meter.
Peter I know you mean well but most garage in Europe. In cities and towns have room for 1 car. Most homes have a garage with room for 1 car. I have lived in 5 different homes and they all had a garage with room for 1 car. They usually are like 1.5 car in length (not width). Where the other 0.5 car length is used for storage and the washing machines and a freezer.
It's rich people that got a garage with room for multiple cars.
I can never please everyone
@@PeterCoulsonPhotographer Well you live in the massive country with tons of open space Australia. I guess we can expect you to make videos about Australian sized things 🙂. In Australia the population density is 3.3 per KM2. In Europe it's between 100ish and 400ish per KM2.
It's alright you got tons of other great videos about lighting.
@@trancer03 Its a standard 2 car garage, we are making another video for the people that didn't watch how much space I actually used, every set up I did could've been done in half the space but would be a lot harder to create a video showing this, but we are making a new video just
@@PeterCoulsonPhotographer yeah I watched the video a few times now while guessing how much of the space you were using and it looks like you can do at least some of the things you did in a smaller space. So with some imagination people can imagine you are doing this in a smaller space.
A average 1 car garage with some extra space for storage is still a decent length. It's just going to take making some black boards and putting them on one end of it and not so much work in the width of the space but in the length of it.
It looks like the key is making some black board that can be moved around
Sorry just looking at your settings I answered my own question 🤪🤙
🤭
So are you are telling us that there is absolutely no ambiant light in the captures? All lighting are your supplied artificial lighting?
yes
The way he moves and talks, reminds me the famous expression of 60s "absent minded professor". [just kidding]
na your about right 😊
Rara looked a bit disappointed
Think “intriguing”, “world wise”, and … .
Wow, the rest of the world is now concerned with our measurment systems... Rest of world should geta life... now on to photography.
We cop grief every time we mention metres, I agree let's get back to photography
Не, мне такой свет не нравится :-( тень под носиком не красивая.
