Another of your wonderful videos. Your storytelling and presentation skills are always excellent. And having worked these barges as a Dutch Australian back in 1972/73 you certainly brought back some beautiful memories of my time sailing through this part of the river. I remember in those days that during high water even our barge needed a pilot to come on board and a tugboat would be attached with a line to help our barge get through the toughest part of the river at Assmanshausen. Thank you again.
Maya’s literary script, perfect diction with British pronunciation along with Captain Aladino’s succinct reading of the navigational challenges make for another entertaining episode without the expensive river cruise price tag!
Uh Charles King, sorry to differ, but Maya’s accent is straight ahead Canadian (North American network standard) not British at all. Maybe she over-enunciates a bit in order to sound very clear.
"Magic Carpet" continues the great adventure for us. I so look forward to Maya's narrating of the area and the wonderful videos every week. You two are doing a great job for us land locked souls! Thank you for taking the time and sharing with us your week. Be safe and be well.
I live about one hour car drive south of this part of the Rhine. I have to admit: I never visited this beautiful landscape. Though, I visited the Moselle river several times. The Moselle valley is quite similar in character: Small touristy towns, wine yards and many castles. BTW: In Germany it is quite common to convert castles to youth hostels or hotels.
There is a gasthaus there called, Loreley, it used to be very busy at night, you should go there. It is across the street from the cliff face. It is a very beautiful area.
Your videos pull me in so much. It's the feeling you have when you reading a really good book. You become part of the story. Your travels up the Rhine encouraged me to read about my namesake. Very interesting experience reading about Wagner and looking at the German countryside with you and Aladino. Be well, stay safe. Richard
That was an amazing current when you saw it against the navigation markers, I suspect you were glad to be through that. Extraordinary views though, and some beautiful, if one time terrifying, castles.
I have been to the castle which is a youth hostel in the town of Bacharach several times. I led bicycle tours of Germany for years bringing folks from the US to explore Germany by bike. This was before the wall came down. What an amazing castle the Bacharach castle is right above the Rhine. Thanks for a beautiful reminder of some good times there. Well done.
We are so enjoying your fantastic journey. We live in New Zealand and brought a 32ft ex rental canal boat last year and had planned to travel from st jean de losne to Strasberg on to Nancy and back down to st Jean de losne taking us 4 months but due to Covid we are sitting in our lounge at home waiting to watch your weekly adventures. Thank you soo much it has kept our dreams alive. Keep well and safe travels Amber and Tony Emm
A long time ago we were in Koblenz and took a gloomy riverboat cruise and drank tasty white wine. I waited and waited for you to get here and you did. Glad you are there safe and sound. You are two brave souls. Thanks for sharing it all with us. Larry. Houston, Texas
God only knows how much I envy ya'll. Your presentation of your adventures is as professional as anything ever created. This actually made me love life again thank y'all so much. May the universe protect you in all and everything y'all decide to do.
So beautiful and exciting. When we were traveling England several years ago and not always knowing what we were doing or sometimes where we were going, I coined a say for my fellow travelers (I was the designated driver), “All roads lead to our destination “. This was my was of saying “chill out, we’ll get there eventually”. 😄 Thanks for sharing your wonderful journey.
The "girl" Loreley supposedly was sitting on the top of the mountain (not down by the river), singing and brushing her long golden hair. Until the turn of the century, the original rocks in the river were very much real and a very serious problem. Traffic was going like on a one way street with traffic lights for ships. Then they dynamited all those rocks and today it is as you have experienced it
Maya you do an awesome job with the history of your travels, I have really enjoyed all of your videos. The scenery is amazing and I look forward to your videos!
Thanks Maya and Aladino for a very entertaining episode. 16:45 I used to camp with my parents at this campground, right across from the Lorelei. One of my teenaged memories is eating breakfast opposite the Lorelei, with 60s pop music playing on the radio from BFBS, the British forces radio station, hosted by the legendary disc jockey Tony Blackburn.
i am from Cologne and it is so interesting to see you go through this beautiful part of the world. i am thinking of getting a boat when i get back to Germany . so i would be interested to see more “nitty - gritty “ of things like marinas and how/ where you get your gas , water etc.
I have been to the Rhine River too, but on the tour boat. What a lovely trip. Where the Rhine River meets the Mosel River you will see the Duetches Eck. It is where the Germans go to feel the Heart of Germany. The big statue is Kaiser Wilhelm I. Love the vids. Have fun.
First, a heartfelt thank you to you both for all the brilliant travel letters from the canals and now, the river Rhine. Truly, it is a pleasure to be allowed to follow your adventurous journey. I thought about this, the grim robbers of the past and their castles are today idyllic tourist attractions. While the industry and industrial areas of our time, which guarantee our civilization, infrastructure and security, are ugly trivia we prefer to avoid. What an irony.
Huge thanks for your last video that is bringing back some fond memories for me. After school, I worked for a few years on a Rhine tanker (no Tankmatch.com at that time ;-) ). One day, in my second apprenticeship year, the captain asked me to take the helm a few kilometers before Loreley rock - like you, we were sailing with the current. Suddenly he left the bridge, and I was very frightened because for the first time I had to steer this big gas tanker around the Loreley and on top of that alone on the bridge. All the best for the two of you and enjoy your time wherever you are!
A beautiful video about the most beautiful part of the river! Fittingly, right in the beginning, at 3:07, you pass the day trip vessel "Vater Rhein" (father Rhine), pointing to a common designation of this mighty part of historic German identity. Concerning bridges: Obviously, there haven't been any bridges between Rüdesheim and Koblenz (too narrow, insufficient traffic), but in both towns, bridges have been destroyed in WWII, mostly by German troops in retreat.
Let me add some landmarks: 17:00 Burg Katz (Cat Castle) above the white tower. It corresponds zu Burg Maus (Mouse Castle) less than a mile downstream. They weren't friendly to each other ;( Another famous pair, only a few miles down, is "die feindlichen Brüder" (the hostile brothers), two castles so close together that a big wall had to secure peace. 18:08 shows the Marksburg (originally built in the 12th century), protecting the village of Braubach below, plus a toll castle. Concerning legends and memories: 11:33 the book cover on the left shows the most famous legend of all: The Nibelung (remember the Wagner operas?). At some time in the past, the tremendous Hort (= treasure) of Nibelung may have been hidden IN the river. Much later, only 50 years ago, there was a boy who steered an open 35' boat across the Binger Loch and past Loreley mid-stream on the empty river (me and a rowboat of five pupils coming down from the Main river) while commercial navigation was stopped due to flooding.
What an interesting video that you have shown us. Thanks for the adventure. Your a first class ticket and I'll always fly with you. Outstanding job. Well done.
I never did get to the Rhine region in times past, there are so many magical old places in Germany it had even been to do as much by the canals, being a boaty myself. But here you both are doing it for us. Great joy every Friday, Thankyou MAYA, I listen to every vowel and consonant with the strings of your bow. Love the design of your boat Aladino, well done..........
Just to say really enjoyed your video this week as we have been in this area in the 1980’s when we stayed at St Goar in our caravan and went on a day trip on the river to Rhudistein. It brought back some lovely memories of that time.
Thanks so much for these great videos! I'm reliving my memories from my trip to the rhein in 2018. Stuck here in NY this year as the borders are still closed.
That camping ground 20.19 we often visited during vacations on the way back from Italy to the Netherlands. At night you could hear the engines from the boats working hard against the stream
Super gmacht ihr beidi, daen das isch kei eifachi passage gsi. Gueti reis witerhin und waener in NlL achoemed wuerds mi interssierae wo ihr feschtmached. Mir laebed in Overijssel naech bi Meppel. Beschti gruess Thomas
If you like the youth hostel in Bacharach you should go see Feste Ehrenbreitstein when you pass through Koblenz. It's also a youth hostel and it's quite impressive.
I watch your channel and enjoy each episode very much and cannot wait for the next one. This weeks episode was extraordinarily interesting. I cannot understand why you have 3 dislikes still you can't please every miserable so and so. Keep up the good work and stay safe and healthy
Aladino's "Killer Bee" outfit? The hat completes it. Google "Here come the killer bees!" on UA-cam. I think he'll have a lot more fun wearing yellow, black and more yellow after that. And while I'm being really annoying... I liked the Gravity's Rainbow song, but I don't think anyone in the band ever read the book. Happy you made it through the rapids.
Mille grazie for yet another good story, it struck me (I guess this have been said a number of times during your travel north through the continent) this is really the MAIN highway for a large chunk of central europe concerning travel and transport during many decades, actually. Very interesting, actually...
17:45 yay, Boppard!😍 I lived there for two years! This episode brings back many wonderful memories... And thanks God you are not going upstream on this section! 😁
Once again thoroughly enjoyable, think you will also enjoy Koblenz lots of interest there to. I can only reiterate what others have suggested & I have said before the Mosel is also wonderful, unless your plans do not allow for a detour. Having been up & down the mighty Rhine a number of times it brings back wonderful memories. The only reason we are not there this year is the dreaded Covid 19. wishing you both a super onward journey & look forward to next week. Cheers Eric
Lorelei By Heinrich Heine Translated by A.Z. Foreman I know not if there is a reason Why I am so sad at heart. A legend of bygone ages Haunts me and will not depart. The air is cool under nightfall. I think that the waves will devour The boatman and boat as one; And this by her song's sheer power Fair Lorelei has done. If it's not to late, I certainly reccomend to go up river Mosel for a few days. You will find there a lovely scenery including the steepest wine groing hills in the world.
As usual, love to watch your beautifully produced videos. as I'm watching every episode with great appreciation i can not help but notice that you are heading north as winter approaches. And so I'm wondering what the plan is once you can put the mast up and sail once again. From Vancouver with love
Maya, thank you for another episode. A bunch of places have to be visited after covid restrictions lifting are on my Google map. Based on your videos several locations were added as well. Could you shoot an episode with some figures how much does it cost to travel/live like you. What budget has to be? Based on my experience one travel day in Western Europe (in a quite modest lifestyle) costs 180 Euro per two adults, it includes hotels, rented car with gasoline, groceries in the local supermarkets, some leisure activities, like thermal spas, without fligh cost.
Another of your wonderful videos. Your storytelling and presentation skills are always excellent. love the way you are alternating between 1 episode of location visited and 1 episode traveling, this is a really great format.
Maya you are a lovely tour guide. Your scripted vocal presentation is enticing. I enjoy seeing the world through an artists eye.

I can't believe how much I have learned about s a i l boat from your Channel. Plus Canal's to France to the north pretty cool.
It’s good to see such a healthy river. The landscape and scenery is wonderful

One more awesome video ! The castles are simply awesome. I did not know so many of them still existed!
A spectacular series. And very well narrated ..

Thank you for this amazing video. Some day we will follow in your wake.
Beautiful scenery and castles..I love hearing about all of the castle's
Beautiful footage again! I loved it. In fact, I loved them all. Until next week.
Wow. Awesome story you told us. Thanks.
Loved your narrative. I wished you would have added the dates the castles were built. My 91 year old Mom truly enjoys your cruise. Fair winds!
Lovely senarry, well done you guys!
Another beautiful and beguiling film - I look forward to Fridays when I can catch up with the voyage of Magic Carpet and her lovely crew
From this perspective I have not yet seen the castles myself. A well done episode. Danke schoen!
Wow so beautiful thank you for sharing.

Good thing you have a shoal keel and you are skilled.
Love it keep it coming Good luck and thank you
Lorelei
By Heinrich Heine
Translated by A.Z. Foreman
I know not if there is a reason
Why I am so sad at heart.
A legend of bygone ages
Haunts me and will not depart.
The air is cool under nightfall.
The calm Rhine courses its way.
The peak of the mountain is sparkling
With evening's final ray.
The fairest of maidens is sitting
So marvelous up there,
Her golden jewels are shining,
She's combing her golden hair.
She combs with a comb also golden,
And sings a song as well
Whose melody binds a wondrous
And overpowering spell.
In his little boat, the boatman
Is seized with a savage woe,
He'd rather look up at the mountain
Than down at the rocks below.
I think that the waves will devour
The boatman and boat as one;
And this by her song's sheer power
Fair Lorelei has done.
The Original:
Ich weiß nicht, was soll es bedeuten,
Daß ich so traurig bin;
Ein Märchen aus alten Zeiten,
Das kommt mir nicht aus dem Sinn.
Die Luft ist kühl, und es dunkelt,
Und ruhig fließt der Rhein;
Der Gipfel des Berges funkelt
In Abendsonnenschein.
Die schönste Jungfrau sitzet
Dort oben wunderbar,
Ihr goldenes Geschmeide blitzet,
Sie kämmt ihr goldenes Haar.
Sie kämmt es mit goldenem Kamme
Und singt ein Lied dabei;
Das hat eine wundersame,
Gewaltige Melodei.
Den Schiffer im kleinen Schiffe
Ergreift es mit wildem Weh;
Er schaut nicht die Felsenriffe,
Er schaut nur hinauf in die Höh'.
Ich glaube, die Wellen verschlingen
Am Ende Schiffer und Kahn;
Und das hat mit ihrem Singen
Die Lorelei getan.

How cool are your sunnies Maya!
as I'm watching every episode with great appreciation i can not help but notice that you are heading north as winter approaches.
And so I'm wondering what the plan is once you can put the mast up and sail once again.

This was in July/early August (patreon information). Still plenty of Summer to enjoy, in the Netherlands.
Those were some insane fairy tales, damn! So interesting to listen to as you showed the castles :)
