Lucci’s DF is a great representation of how straightforward and ambitionless he is in comparison to other OP villains. Crocodile’s sand and dehydration abilities were critical to his long-term plans to conquer Alabasta. Enel’s lightning abilities were necessary to power the Arc Maxim and dish out God’s Judgement to maintain his iron grip on Skypeia. But Lucci has no ambition - he’s simply a violent murderer. So it makes sense that his fruit is a carnivorous zoan that maximizes his bloodlust and killing ability.
Its shocking to see his lack of ambition, especially since he’s supossed to be a highly intelligent character
Like you said it all dude, this is EXACTLY what I have been thinking and feeling about him, but sadly I coulnt really find the rights words. Thanks
@@Alejandrorisin I think it's supposed to be shocking! Especially with Spandam being such a weak, cowardly, incompetent "leader" for CP9. That's just what being Government Dog does to a mf
@@Alejandrorisin, that has nothing to do with intelligence. Intelligent people don't always have ambition. The two aren't even related.
@@Shark-hn4mv forreal tho, you can have some jackass with a lot of ambition, but a lot of intelligent people who would keep a low profile in life
Lucci knows full well that he is evil but doesn't care, he only cares about completing the task at hand , he really is the perfect soldier
Taxt💀
The thing is, if you reread Enies Lobby there are clearly times where he doesn't even care about the taxt at hand, he lets Spandam flounder around and doesn't do things he knows he should just because Spandam didn't ask. His only motivation is bloodshed in the name of "Dark Justice", and his sadism even extends to his superiors (Spandam) and allies (the hostages in the flashback).
The taxt huh?
Same bro tired of being taxt
Tax? That truly is evil lol! #RemoveIncomeTax
I think Lucci’s simplicity is part of why his fight and defeat against Luffy is so satisfying. It strips down Luffy’s role as captain to its most simple element. Ever since Arlong Park, Luffy has explicitly acknowledged that his most important contribution is his ability is to beat the strongest enemy. And unlike previous fights where Luffy had to navigate around tricky DF powers, Lucci’s fruit is straightforward: it makes him a stronger brawler and killer. Lucci represented Luffy’s first major fight since Arlong where he had to defeat a villain whose sole dangerous trait was his incredible strength and skill - a straight up fist fight until one of them couldn’t get up anymore, with one set of fists representing freedom and the other representing government tyranny.
Exactly. The emotional and thematic weight of everything that had happened from water 7 onwards was already with the reader. We didn't need the villian to give long speeches, make the hero re consider his beliefs or learn a new power system. All the villian needed to do was be an iron wall for luffy to let all those emotions out with his fists. And Lucci did an amazing job at that.
Well said.
Beautiful...🥹
@@dannyfenton8826 especially in the context of the other main theme of the Water 7 saga: every crew member having their own role to play. Usopp’s entire arc centers around his realization and eventual acceptance that being “strong” isn’t his role. Meanwhile, Luffy’s arc is about him realizing just how important *his* role as captain really is. Luffy doesn’t just fight Lucci bc he’s the only one strong enough to do it, Luffy straight up says that he’s making an active decision to focus solely on the strongest guy (Lucci) and leave the rest of the operation to his crew because that’s his job. If Lucci were schemer with a complex plan, it would have made Luffy’s role and priorities less obvious to the reader.
Lucci one-shots Luffy
hes also the only villian that luffy beat and he didnt get his will broken, and actually came back to fight luffy again
He has no dreams. He was already dead, a killing machine, of course his will is not broken, he is not bearing any will.
Is he a villain more like a guy who looking to get paid for killing
@@mangareader7474 well even paid professionals might have compassion etc, but lucci is one note.
And thats because he has no dreams to chase. His whole existence is based on the drive for violence. After a violent fight when he gets beaten...he just comes back for more violence.

Definitely. Lucci is covered in drip.
Lucci is the epitome of the concept of "Nothing personal, just business", for him none of this is personal, but a job. A job he likes and is very good at doing, but it is still a job
I think quite the opposite.
It's more fun than business to him.
He'd probably also do it for free - it's just as long as he does it while on duty, he gets a free pass, which is convenient.
@@fumomofumosarum5893 this is what I thought when we got his backstory. The guy just likes to murder
Lmao no he's not. Explain any of his enels lobby shenanigans where he let the strawhats follow him to troll spandam. It's almost like he has a personality, doesn't like incompetence in the goverment and is okay with allowing a fiasco.
There's definitely more to luccis character, turning the cat into a loyal dog is so beyond ridiculous. This analysis is beyond off base.
Seeing the last chapter, there is definitely something personal about it
He is specifically told by Kaku and Stussy to not go fight Luffy, Akainu orders the CP0 to not do anything until Kizaru arrives and yet Lucci just jumps in at the opportunity to fight Luffy again, most certainly because he is still bitter about his defeat at Enies Lobby
Of course he is. One of the reasons he rejoined the government was a chance to fight and kill Luffy. Even when he was in CP9 he put the mission at risk just because he wanted to fight Luffy. He lives to fight string opponents and make them suffer before he kills them.
Luuci is one of the few villains that luffy never called by his real name. He is just the Pidgeon Guy
It's because Luffy can't relate to him whatsoever
THIS, almost every antagonist in OP Luffy has at least something in common with, like ambition or being a Pirate with dreams of conquering the sea or in Luffy’s case just being free. With Lucci however he couldn’t relate to him or understand him whatsoever leaving Luffy completely detached. The only thing Luffy was certain of about Lucci is that if he didn’t beat this guy everyone would die
What I loved about Lucci is that he's kind of the anti-Luffy.
Obedient. A killer. Lacking aspiration. Perfectly willing to betray people who believe he's their friend.
Not the last part, lucci won’t betray his friends
@@Deathmare235 Recently, yeah. But he was introduced in an arc where he betrays people like Iceberg and Paulie, because he was a spy.
@@calemr they were never his friends though also even back then his friends paid for his recovery
Luffy breaks people's dreams when defeating them.
Lucci doesnt have a dream, which makes him not the strongest but the most terrifying enemy Luffy has faced till date. Lucci is a straight up murder machine.
That's a good parallel
Damn ,das actually crazy
his epithet is also literally rob "massacre weapon" lucci
Lucci once explained that he joined Cipher Pol because there he can freely kill. And I think that's what he's all about. He doesn't really care which side he is on as long as he gets to kill. Though he doesn't always let it on, he's actually a bloodthirsty fighting maniac. And he is finally starting to reveal his true colors. That's why he ignored the command to not attack the strawhats. I think he at one point will completely lose it and give in to his anamalistic nature, where he ignores even the celestial dragons and the elder's command. I think this will have a way bigger impact on the story than we currently think.
So, he might lose his mind, kind of like how Azula did at the end of Avatar: TLA?
Yes, which is why I don't get why people talk about a "redemption arc" for Lucci. How does that make sense at all? He isn't misguided, he is a full blown psycho completely aware of what he is doing. Any other villain has a better chance of redemption compared to him, I could even see Kaido or Enel fighting alongside Luffy in the final war. But Lucci??? No, he isn't going to wake up one day and think "hey maybe killing is wrong" after everything he's done.
You could be right, but I think if Vegapunk/Seraphim turn against Strawhats and CP0 and they are forced into situations where they have to work together (kinda like impel down or punk hazard) that could be interesting to see. As impossible as it may seem, having a soulless character like lucci learn from Luffy in a natural way would be amazing show of writing.
I love Enel
Not Enel lol Crocodile is the closest we had
he did start to question his orders tho
He doesn’t have to think killing is wrong he just has to grow to hate the WG though
As a Rob Lucci fanboy, this character analysis puts a smile on my face. He may not be the strongest or the most significant villain, but he is my favorite.
You can say, he has a tough will, even after getting defeated by Luffy, the dude just wants to kill

I will never understand how people say Akainu is evil for killing Ace. That is literally his job, to kill pirates, that is what he is paid to do. Yeah, I get disliking him for it, but, that is not what made him "evil". To me, the most evil thing Akainu did during the war was when he decided to act as judge, jury, and executioner to marines fleeing the battlefield.
Akainu is also evil for murdering a boat full of innocent civilians; he was one of the many soldiers that participated in murdering White Beard the person that stopped the power vacuum of chaos from happening until Luffy is left cleaning up the messes of The World Government again, and him killing Ace is evil because he killed Ace for his blood heritage and not for the crimes Ace has committed himself.
@@RoronoaZoro-ur6hr Ace is a pirate, he's a criminal by definition.
@@emmanuelguerrerohernandez9353 , Eustass Kid, Trafalgar Law, Black Beard, Kaido, Big Mom, and Bege are all pirates way worst than Fire Fist Ace, Shanks, and White Beard, but yet the World Government has never tried to execute those pirates in a public execution like Nico Robin and Fire Fist Ace, and as I said previously that if the World Government wasn’t so incompetent and corrupt they’d be killing off those privates instead of placing them in Enies Lobby for endless torture considering that Luffy, the Revolutionaries, Shiki, Black Beard, and Buggy have all broken in and out Enies Lobby, and the World Government executing people solely on their heritage and not the crimes they’ve committed is why people such as myself would much rather want to join up with the Bounty Hunters, Pirates, and Revolutionaries than joining up with the Marines.

It's crazy to think Oda made him a villain on the fly.
I love that he's a sadist and doesn't pretend otherwise.
In the last episode of the manga you can see exactly why Lucci is a tactically superior opponent: he faces Luffy in gear 5 and starts losing. Vega punk sends Sentomaru to help the strawhats with the Seraphim, and it seems like game over for the CP0… Lucci takes out Sentomaru so the Seraphim are again under CP0’s control, evening the scales once again
I think the one thing that you didn't mention specifically is that Lucci isn't just a murderer. He ENJOYS this. While Luffy was fighting against the ideas of the World Government by fighting Lucci, pretty much all of the problems that were within the Enies Lobby arc, all of the torment that Robin was suffering from, was all for Lucci's enjoyment. He revels in killing people and finds pleasure in watching people risk their lives. He's the ultimate sociopath, finding pleasure in carnage and enjoyment in the suffering of others
CP9:Entertains citizens and helps them while also raising money to heal lucci out of his coma
Lucci:
Akainu believes to the fullest extent in the ideals the World Government want to say they promote. Which sometimes causes him to clash with the World Government themselves when they want him to act outside of those ideals.
Lucci sees through the World Government's bullshit and serves them anyway.
That's why Lucci is able to fight Luffy a second time without having his will crushed. Because his and the World Government's ideals aren't actually linked.
That is the case, however, with Akainu. His ideals are actually inextricably tied to the World Government's - meaning if those ideals were proven wrong, Akainu's will would be crushed like any other villain.
Which is why I think that during the final war he's gonna parallel Bellamy. Becoming disillusioned with the World Government's ideals that he has tied his identity to for so long - yet continuing to fight for them anyway because he thinks he's already gone too far to change. All so Luffy can move onto the real villain who actually embodies their ideals through and through - Doffy/Im respectively.
He doesn’t serve the government lol he serves the celestial dragons who are above the world government which means he can tell akainu what to do lol
Kuma said it best "No battle has no certain outcome. Who could've predicted that Rob Lucci would be defeated"
0:55: Morj: He really is devoid of all desire other than to kill.
Me: Remember kids, Leopards never change their spots.

Lucci is the soldier the world government likes, the one that the world government wants to multiply, hence why they create the pacifistas (soldiers that follow rules).
What a breakdown! Lucci's my favorite villain of One Piece for the exact reasons you highlighted.
No bullshit, no grand scheme, straight business. And damn I love his Rankyaku Gaicho!!!
Lucci and Luffy are bassically opposites not only are their names different but Lucci is under control voluntarily but Luffy's main goal is freedom. Luffy also doesn't like to kill because he would rather destroy another's ideal rather than kill while Kucci has no ideals and has no hesitation to kill.
Lucci strikes me as closer to Kizaru than to Akainu. (The "license to kill" is a self-serving loyalty. But Akainu's loyalty is genuine and absolute.)
Lucci is the single character I thirst over the most in all of fiction. The things I would let him do to me....

Rob Lucci represents the grey area of what justice is, questioning wether we as humans use justice as a tool to protect or as an excuse to serve our carnal desires and instincts, essentially turning the term justice into a morality cover for our minds true nature.
True justice is everyone realizing they’re the villain that contributes to injustice
The whole part about Lucci being straightforward just builds on him being a scarier contrast to Luffy. Luffy has a similar mindset which is shown in the alabasta arc when he said he wanted to go straight to Crocodile whereas Vivi wanted to stop the rebel army.
Lucci's back resembling world government's symbol reminds me of Funny Valentine. Funny how both of them are so iconic in their own ways.
Water 7 and Enies Lobby is one of Oda's masterclasses in terms of storytelling and I'd sum up what I'd mean by that with the contrast between Kaku and Lucci and the way Oda uses Kaku who's very clearly ambitious and feels fatalistically trapped by the way his lifes path not to pursue his ambitions as a way to show Lucci's pleasure with his life and lack of ambitions as something evil and wrong. Kaku's fight is one of my favorites in the whole series because of the way Oda unveils Kaku as this tragic figure who's probably never gonna abandon his roots cause he doesn't know anything else while Lucci is just like why would I want anything else? It really just made me go Lucci is a monster who's hard to understand in his simplicity and Oda knocked it outta the park.
Honestly I want Kaku to switch sides. Bro is too cool and funny to just get murked and written off. I loved him in water 7.

What do you think will happen to characters like Lucci when or if the WG and the Celestial Dragons fall ?

I love the analysis you give. I honestly read one piece on a very surface level but that distinction between dark and absolute justice gives it another level of depth.
No Disputes. Lucci has always been a top 5 villain for me.
I think it's also fitting that he has a cat model DF (leopard). Garp and Akainu (literally "aka" and "inu" meaning Red and Dog respectively) are usually represented/accompanied by dog imagery. This is because in japan the dog is representative of loyalty, obedience, structure and law. Even tho Garp and Akainu can sometimes be thought of as merciless (such as garp not saving his own grandson in the name of justice), they do both ultimately serve for the purpose of justice. Lucci is instead given a Leopard, showing that he isn't as noble as the dogs and instead uses justice for his own selfish desires (that being to kill).
Do you think the CP9 cover story will come into play? It’s one of my favorite cover stories and it would be such a shame to leave them like this. It would be cool if all former CP9 agents will come back and side against the WG for what happened after Enies Lobby
At some point it should be addressed, it's weird that with that ending they came back to working for the WG, I don't think they'll become allies but they will likely betray the government in some way

I think the reason akainu is hated while lucci is not is because lucci's honest akainu says the stuff he does is "in the name of justice" but compare him to lucci he's just as bloodthirsty if not more, it's him saying it's justice that makes him despicable.

To be fair though, I think Kizaru can be just as emotionless and blood thirsty. He's always ruthless and shows no emotion whatsoever. Like a weapon much like Lucci
Already got me subbed with that amazing introduction 👍
With most One Piece villains, they see themselves as the good guys. Others - such as Akainu and Katakuri - were just doing their jobs.
Lucci, on the other hand, knows full well that he's evil and he's damn proud of it. And he doesn't kill because it's his job - he took his job as an excuse to kill. This is a guy who destroyed a nation's entire army when he was just a child.
I really like Lucci’s character. He’s strong and powerful, smart and is just there doing his business.
Luffy x Nami at the end GGWP :P
Nice timing perfect actually 👌🏾
If anyone else is insterested in the thematic relevance of Lucci vs Luffy, I made a whole analysis on it:
"Essentially, Lucci is not a fully 3 dimensional character. But his one note attitude is what makes him an extension of the WG's will, a perfect soldier/executioner in their sight.
Due to Oda's symmetries in both numbers or naming conventions, I don't think the similarity between "Luffy" and "Lucci's" names being a coincidence. After all, Lucci was already the first villain with no weaknesses, where Luffy had to surpass HIMSELF in order to beat (an increase in speed, stamina and strenght were necessary, not his usual creative ways of fighting or exploiting enemie's weaknesses up to that point. Now its a bit different with the introduction of Haki)
But the point of where I want to get at is the thematic duality between them:
Luffy has an "X" scarred on his chest
Lucci has a "✚" tatooed on his back
The "X" represents Anarchy/Freedom, the "✚" represents Totalitarianism/Order. These are only 45ª away from each other- We know the One Piece World's epochs are told apart as "cycles", from early in the series. So in a long enought time span, this can have happened multiple times, like that of a world of freedom (Ancient Kingdom) to a world of order (Marijois), essentially representing a shift in the World's main power. This cycle turning once more might be what the WG fears, as they are informed by it having happened before. This is possibily the same of going from "Dusk" to "Dawn", and Luffy being misdiagnosed the same thing as what Black Beard is in the eyes of WG.
This all is brought further to relevancy when you notice the ✚ shape of the WG's Symbol (the intersection of the Grand Line with the Red Line, spaning the entirety of the world) and the X shape of the treasure in a pirate's map (the Reverse Mountain's rivers, denoting something lying underneath, likely, in the same axys, on the opposite pole, the Fishman Isle Luffy is supposedly destined to Destroy)."
From a post I made on Reddit... I don't care to custom rewritting it everytime lol
Love how I got an ad from the upcoming One Piece game with Rob Lucci at the beginning... in a video about Rob Lucci.
I agree being simple isn't bad thing but just like anything especially when using it in a story comes down to whether they properly execute.
I find it funny that while every other major villain has at least one similarly to Luffy, Lucci's only similarity is their names being pretty similar.
the new knowledge about devil fruits is really interesting especially since opa once said if zoro ever got a devil fruit it will be Kaido's do they have similar ambitions?
It’s funny cause the two villains luffy had the most trouble fighting were both non-captains/leaders lucci and katakuri
"God does not need to make sense." - Rob Lucci
That's all you need to hear to know all you need to about Lucci.
Lucci seems sort of similar to Hawkins, now that I think about it. Both are soldiers. One to the government, the other to fate. Agents, in other words, who work on the behalf of an outside force.
What this means is that when Luffy ultimately changes the entire setting, Lucci and Hawkins will just as readily side with him when they are commanded to do so. And that's exciting.
Interesting take.
its similar to how japanese soldiers went to police in indo china in 1946 on behalf of the allies, they were under new management so to speak
He’s the most handsome villain too ❤❤

That's just awesome! I've never think about Lucci like this. I really like your thoughts about him.
I would say Lucci is a yin/yang counterpart to Luffy - he willingly submits to orders of those stronger than him (like the rest of the WG hierarchy), he is ruthlessly violent and doesn't even care about the fate of his 'friends'. The only 'seed' that makes them comparable is that neither have interest in "authority" for themselves. Luffy wants freedom to explore with his friends, Lucci wants the freedom to kill (or rather to be commanded to).
That analyse, made appreciate and understand better why he is in the new ark
SPOILERS FOR THE ONE PIECE CHAPTER 1069
Lucci's awakened devil fruit form is strikingly similar to luffy's gear 5, especially with the black drapey things compared to luffy's white drapes. I wonder if theres a deeper meaning to that parallel
9:11 This is the first time I see the two side to side… I wonder what shop they go to?
Good video, but feels like it could've benefitted from what his character and its themes mean as they are re-introduced in the story so many years later. Would have been a nice couple minutes to tag on considering the last page of 1068. Still entertaining as always tho!
So...
Akainu = Lawful Evil
Lucci = Neutral Evil
Akainu equals Lawfully Evil, and Lucci equals Lawfully Neutral Evil.
i never felt like sakazuki was a weapon of the WG like lucci. if anything kizaru fits that mold within the admiral ranks. sakazuki kinda hates the goresei and the way things are ran. he seems to have a seriously personal stake with his absolute justice, and his own "dreams" to fulfill. lucci is more of a sociopath. he's a gun waiting to have his trigger pulled. like a dog on a leash waiting for the next command. sakazuki is actively trying to change the world in his own vision and see to that all "evil" is entirely eradicated from the planet.
Excellent video
Babe wake up new Morj analysis video just dropped

Great video explanation!
But you forgot to mention another thing another CP9, the fact that they are orphans (big mom past) and have protected their homeland which they weren't born but raised, which gave to them an opportunity to have something to do in their lifes. They cherish this land and the futur of CP9, it's meaningfull to them.
To my mind Lucci and the others aren't ingrate people. Lucci was drawn as a kid with a bag in his back. Did he traveled? Or runaway from his home? Since he had already Hatori with him. Did he found him alone bc he fall from the nest? They must share a same sort of story for Lucci to have a pet. (Does this man has a heart?)
Also Kaku after being defeated by Zoro, he raised the fact he's well aware that CP9 can't make other things than murdering. If there's no CP9, then no plans for the futur.
That's why, their is indeed Dark Justice, but not only by duty, Lucci is grateful to the WG, so that's why he's "okay" to be blind (even if he doesn't fully agreed Spandam ideas) and can do such cruel thing to kill ennemies. Someone must have saved him to get such precise and big scars in his back. He must also strongly hate pirates bc he almost murdered the captain Candy after recovering.
You also point out that Lucci doesn't care of authority, I believed it's means he would have already been in CP0 but he always refused promotion for 15 years. He prefered to have a chief like Spandam than a celestial dragon. But since he lost 2 years ago, and get full responsability for Enies Lobby bc of Spandam, I think he was finally obliged to get to CP0 if he wanted to come back.
Sorry for that. That was long. (I agreed that we need to have a Flashback for me to say this)
Thats why enies lobby is best arc, Marineford a close second
I read that as Pucci

Man, I am so sick of hearing how you can get different Netflix shows if you use a VPN, when in fact you can only get those shows if you make and pay for a Netflix account in that country.
11:11 exactly why I love him
And now not only this lucci is now awakened and stronger bro 💀🔥
To address the argument that Spandam as Luffy’s opponent wouldn’t have the same impact because he’s self-serving, you can say the same about Lucci. He’s serving his bloodthirsty nature by taking on the requests of the world government.
Lucci also believed in dark justice so you could say he isn’t fully self-serving. If he truly only wanted to kill, he wouldn’t worry about adopting a philosophy of justice. Feel free to let me know if my train of thought is flawed 🤙🏾
Also, Lucci is top 5 villains in One Piece for me
interesting, but couln't one say that adopting dark justice is just self-serving? Adopting a philosophy only to fit your desires, rather then letting your philosophy determine your desires?
One big theme of Water 7 is leadership. Spandam is the incompetent boss with a dream to contrast with Lucci the competent boss who lacks porpouse. Also it lands home the Ohara flashback.
@@danyosuna7276 good point!
I don’t think it would be the same thing
With lucci, fighting luffy is him getting what he wants. Lucci is just a weapon performing his role. While he would prefer to win the fight and kill luffy, his goals and ideals aren’t directly at odds with what luffy is striving for during the water 7/enies lobby arc. The fact that lucci is fighting for the world government is basically tangential to lucci. Spandam represents the general mindset of the corruption within the world government, but that corruption is present because of a lot of people like spandam who wish to rule the world with absolute power. So, each individual one isn’t that significant of an obstacle to overcome. Lucci, on the other hand, doesn’t really care all that much about this conflict, so his existence as a human weapon, who has no real personal stake in the battle, is best for exemplifying the faceless dark side of the world government as a system. Instead of focusing on a single particular person, who is one of the many corrupt individuals in the world government.
@@danyosuna7276 you’re absolutely right. From a leadership standpoint, Lucci is a much more capable leader. I was talking specifically to the point Morj made regarding the fact that Spandam wouldn’t make for as good an opponent for Luffy as Lucci because Spandam is self-serving, thus implying that Lucci is not, in contrast
9:58 uh that wasn't the government orders that was the fan base actually XD
I wanna see more of smoker
Can't wait for lucci vs lucy fight
Curious if you think this changes even the slightest in the next few episodes? Did losing to luffy make him change his perspectives at all?
