My mom was diabetic for over 40 years. When she moved in with us we put her on a vegan diet. It reduced her insulin intake by 70%. And she was able to come off some of her other medication. She lived another 5/6 years and died at 94. Her diabetes was never fully reversed, but her health sure did improve!
That's great to hear! I have worked with folks who have high insulin resistance and have to cut out some foods that are vegan like avocado and oil just to get the A1C back into normal range. The Mastering Diabetes book talks about this.
What lovely souls! I got choked up when Samantha was talking about her grandma. ❤ I think Samantha hit the “nail on the head” when she said her relative felt he should not go against the doctors orders concerning diet. Makes me think that’s where the work needs to be, getting nutrition to be a larger part of every physician’s curriculum.
Your gramma didn't have to see you walk at graduation because she knew you would make it through all the way to graduation and beyond! God bless Mrs. Gramma. I look forward to meeting her healed in heaven. 🙏
I am happy she is no longer in pain. The pain is ours since we miss her presence. And yes, I also look forward to meeting her in heaven. Thank you for the nice words you shared.
Chuck, you're such a compassionate interviewer. Samantha, it's a pleasure meeting you your kindness and compassion showing through and thank you for encouraging me with my health coaching aspirations😊
Thank you and yes, being in spaces of people of like mind is essential. I had so much fun at the Exam Room live event. The energy in the room was palpable.
That's so true about Jamaica. My snacks were on the trees in our back yard. Nothing were package. We ate meat once per week on Sundays that's brown stew chicken with beans and rice and some vegetables. We ate curry goat on special occasions like weddings, birthday parties. Fish once per week usually on Thursdays Breakfast was banana porridge or cornmeal porridge with spices. We ate carbs, vegetables. Drink real coconut water not box ones. The most important thing we open our windows in the mornings for fresh air and we sit on our verandas after work for relaxation. We walk around the neighborhood after dinners and just chat with neighbors who are usually our cousins. In the country we are all related. People lived longer no obesity. Now American diet has infiltrated Jamaica. They are getting American diseases.
This was a fantastic interview! Please have Samantha and her mom back again. As a Jamaican, I could relate to much of what she describes about growing up. Loved hearing about the airline vegan meal - earlier today I completed a survey for a different airline and answered the question about what they could do better by suggesting vegan options for snacks and drinks!
Absolute truth. We asked a kidney specialist who was part of a group serving southwest Michigan about getting my brother on a diet before his kidneys failed. The specialist said no need to see a nutritionist until AFTER his kidneys failed and he was on dialysis! Things were getting worse. We travelled several hours to find a kidney specialist unrelated to the healthcare system where he had been seen. The doctor referred him to a nutritionist as part of his care and he is improving. Guess what? His diet includes fruits, vegetables, beans, whole grains, seeds and nuts which his wife had been religiously avoiding because it hadn't been advised by the regional kidney specialist.
Stories like this is why I have a sense of urgency about spreading the news. I have a cousin in a similar situation and I interviewed Dr Brooke Goldner on my podcast talking about how she is helping people reverse stage 4 kidney failure with a raw vegan diet. This info should be in every dialysis center which is all over Black and Brown communities.
You did the right thing. I know there is "new" info out there that says animal protein doesn't bother the kidneys but I don't believe this. A lot of new studies these days lack integrity. My grandfather had a rare kidney disease and the first thing he needed to do was reduce his consumption of animal protein. It was a world of difference!
Three diets that heal diabetes is fully raw vegan 80-10-10 or carnivore or keto. Any one of these! And try to stick to organic. ❤ Fully raw has more energy but carnivore n Keto takes more pain away. They all have pros and cons. My husband and I prefer 80-10-10. But you can start out carnivore or Keto then switch to 80-10-10 but no bananas n jicama if you have diabetes! These diets all heal. It’s a matter of preference n not that one is better than another. They all have pros n cons. But pick one n get off the American diet! And don’t eat a bunch of artificial sugars on the Keto or anything GMOed! Eat ALL organic non GMOed no matter which diet! Raw vegans will compromise n eat non organic n GMOed garbage! I'm Jamaican too, and yes we adopt the SAD diet, once we move here much more meat, and less fresh veggies! But my mom cooked almost all our meals...we did get sucked into SUGAR...but I never got into soda thank goodness. Yep those NOODLE PACKETS OF DEATH (LOL) I ate those for a while...
Yeah, my mom and I did a whole series on this. The Jamaican diet is healthy when the preparation is more intentional. My mom had to make a lot of tweaks to Jamaican recipes to make it cleaner. Thanks for watching❣

This Podcast was excellent! It brought sight to demographic challenges to health, whether through being able to access healthy food to cultural norms for diet. I applaud this channel and hope we can hear more from a variety of diverse groups on challenges and success stories on eating plant based
I ate raw for breakfast and a snack today. Then I ate a mixed green salad and barley lentil soup. Ate a crispbread cracker with PB 2 and a few dark chocolate chips. Not sure what dinner will be yet
Your stomach wasnt used to the Sad diet.I worked with Asains in Mpls.& this young guy was getting sick from American food.i felt so bad for him.he was so nice.❤❤❤
When I was a child, i was very sick. I moved back to my country in Mexico at 5 maybe and within a year my grandmother in the country, was healing me with foods we grew end her herbs, rarely we ate meat, and I meant like once a year... she killed a chicken once because I had the flu, she never killed a chicken again. She was the village healer or " curandera"... then I moved back in the states and while I stayed mostly healthy, but my anemia, and I became vegetarian but was eating vegetarian junk food for too long, then I became vegan but not raw, i am going to try going back to vegan but raw.
Liked, commented, subscribed! Spreading the word! Loved this episode as she is raw vegan! Love that! ethical vegan for life! love dr. caldwell esselstyn and dr. barnard for sure!
I love your content and I want to say thank you for bringing up the native reservation. I am from one in south Dakota and it's very true we have two grocery stores and couple convenient gas stations that carry some food but not much produce. Prices are also high and we also have food tax unlike the state next to us.
Raw Kristina is also good. She had diabetes at age 18 & has been eating raw for 18 yesrs now. She is on youtube. She has books, & advice for beginners.
At Montego Bay Sandals in Jamaica we had almost all fruits! It was amazing! ❤ Yum! N that coffee was so so good n can’t find it anywhere! I would love to find that coffee !
From my experience primary care physicians do include or at least should with every patient refer them to the hospital dietician when diagnosed with these types of chronic diseases. I mean if they don’t want to teach the doctors how to follow the best diet for there health at least include a vegan diet into the dietician’s curriculum.
I completely agree that primary care physicians play a vital role in guiding patients, especially those with chronic diseases, towards resources that can help manage their condition. Referring to a hospital dietician can indeed be invaluable. This is why it is awesome what PCRM does in training these health professionals because I have talked to dietitians in my community who are not aware of the dangers of feeding people meat and dairy. I went to a local event one nonprofit run by dietitians hosted and part of their food demo for the children was Cheerios and yogurt. When I suggested they attend a plant based training for dietitians, I was told they need to meet the community where they are. They were not interested in plant based education. I did a video about this but I don’t agree that is meeting the community where they are. People need to respect others enough to educate them and give them the option to choose differently but not assume that they won’t make the switch or can’t. We don’t know what people are capable of.
People who have Type II knew or were told how to eat as far back as I remember. I'm going back 60 plus years. I know many diabetics who, knowing what they SHOULD do, eat what they want. There is no excuse today given the wide range of off and online resources. Also, the Jamaican, diet the mother talks about is close to the same diet many, not most, Americans ate prior to the 70s, perhaps before she came here.
Yeah, my grandma's diet was pretty controlled since her mobility was not there and she was on the top level of the house. All her meals were prepared and served to her. She did have maybe a couple children sneak her sweets once in a while but it was not a daily thing for her.
I'm on a raw diet hoping to cure my diabetes. I'm type 1 .. I have heard and seen people do it by eating melons. Unfortunately melons are not in season right now. When they were I could not only eat it because i was starving all the time. But after a year on only fruit and vegetables I think this next year I'll be able to do it.
Thank you for watching ❣ 🤗 I cry because I miss her and she deserved better than a long painful death but it was not in vain because I get to help so many from the experience.
I love her ❤. She so knowledgable and intelligent ! And I’m full Polish so this is super cool to hear ! I am thinking of transitioning to raw vegan too . Eating way too much bread and pasta . Such a great video ! ❤❤❤
She doesn't need to be raw or be concerned about protein. She should listen to Dr Mcdougall and Dr Lisle. Still, her diet is far healthier than the standard American diet.
I am aware of both of those doctors and being raw helped me lose the weight that cooked veganism easily puts on for me. I love to eat and overeat. Raw foods are easier on my body and digestive system. This is why I coach folks to find what works for them. Also, concerns about protein are wise to avoid sarcopenia later. I don’t have a history of this in my family but I don’t have too many of us that I can look back and say they were high raw vegans. I would rather be safe than sorry. Looking forward to Dr Gregor’s book coming out on this topic.
@@SamanthaSalmon Cooked vegan foods don't make people put on weight, as long as they are unprocessed. If you listen to Dr Lisle he talks about the concept of 'wet vs dry starches', so if you’re concerned about putting on weight, you should eat mostly wet, unprocessed starch. Being raw is not consistent with the natural history of humans and is unsustainable long term. Regarding protein, we need minimal amounts, and you will get more than enough from plant foods. Best of luck with your endeavours. I am sorry to hear about your grandmother.
When you’re so good that your grand daughter suffers just remembering your dying! My grandmother was so ignorant and nasty that I was relieved when she died.
Great story. One thought….If you’re really trying to stay raw, I would say to be very careful going back to eating the the cooked food. It can be an extremely slippery slope as I’ve learned from painful experience. I realize it’s very tempting to try and put it back into your life and still be healthy but unfortunately, it just doesn’t work that way. We’re simply not designed to eat cooked food. It denatures and deranges the food and in turn the food does the same to us. Do some research on the Heatox project in Israel to learn more about just how damaging it is to our bodies. Up to you of course, cooked Vegan is certainly better than a cheeseburger from McDonald’s. But if you really want to be as healthy as you can, you’ve got to cut it out of your life. I realize it’s not easy. I’ve been at this for many years and I still struggle with it at times..
And you go abroad to Europe, or Asia, or Africa - to the so-called ‘poorer’ countries & yet they have fresh, locally grown food markets & stalls everywhere! It’s the highly commercially-controlled so-called ‘civilised’ countries that have taken that beautiful provision away from us.
I worked with about 7 different nationalities there .I loved working with them all.all so very nice.except one Chinese woman.everyone steered clear of her.she looked very mean.& never talked much.i dont know if she was shy or couldnt speak english.i guess I should have tried But even the other foreigners seemed afraid of her.😮😮😮😮😮😮
@@SamanthaSalmon I certainly don’t dispute the fact that someone who switches over from the SAD diet into eating anything else, including plants, will have a certain temporary benefit. But you have to lack brain capacity to believe that a raw vegan diet from beginning to end of natural life is going to sustain health, strength, stamina, intellect and mental prowess. Eating raw vegetables and other plants make you waste 80 % of the possible nutrition in the plants. Cooking improves the vitamin and mineral assimilation by the human body. Best yet is to eat mainly animal products because it saves you the endless necessity of nutrient conversion required for assimilation of plant sourced vitamins and minerals. In the flesh of a steer all that is all done for you. And the fact that the steer has 4 stomach chambers allows for the dismantling of most dangerous plant and man-made chemicals. Not withstanding that there are numerous nutrients that are not even found in any plants and are essential for human life. I’ll let you discover through your own research which one they are, and definitely B12 is not the only one. To live as a raw foodie you will need to accept sickness and early death.
Nowadays there are studies and researches for every diet, depends what are you looking for. On every diet people get sick, old and die. Because diet is not the only source of happiness and health. There are many Raw vegan doctors if you are open to this side of perspective and 30+ years raw vegan people who havent been sick. Ofc there are long lived, healthy meat eaters, to each their own. I can't be so self centered and push my knolwdge and diet to others. We resonate with different people because of our past experiences and consicousness. Most of us are eating emotions as comfort foods, like drug addicts and fight about that.
@@innerview6298 Maybe you are eating your emotions but since going carnivore, my emotions have normalized. I am calmer, more poised and focus is by far better. My cravings are completely gone. This is real peace of mind! As for yourself, I hope you have a good life, and if you don’t, I hope you will remember that you rejected sound advice. Each one makes his own bed and lies in it.
@2:06 Samantha Salmon is out of touch with reality, Theres no such thing as "Jamaican American", Jamaican is by nationalism. Jamaican is NOT a ethnicity, the Africans in Jamaican got there by the African diaspora. If her parents were born in Jamaica that would make her African Jamaican, her born in America makes her African American.
My mom was diabetic for over 40 years. When she moved in with us we put her on a vegan diet. It reduced her insulin intake by 70%. And she was able to come off some of her other medication. If you don’t eat bananas n jicama on the fully raw vegan 80-10-10 then it does reverse diabetes.

@@SamanthaSalmon I’ve always felt my best on raw foods! Loving this interview . I used to work at cafe gratitude back in the day
@@Constantlyevolvingagain Awesome! Happy to be connected. That place has been really special to me and was a huge part of my raw vegan beginnings ❣
I feel mucus coming up and mornings feels like hangover with cooked whole plant foods after being raw on and off several years.
Excellent!
Thank you for watching ❣
When you’re so good that your grand daughter suffers just remembering your dying! My grandmother was so ignorant and nasty that I was relieved when she died.
Good interview
Thank you for watching ❣
Dont forget sprouts soo easy to grow
And you go abroad to Europe, or Asia, or Africa - to the so-called ‘poorer’ countries & yet they have fresh, locally grown food markets & stalls everywhere! It’s the highly commercially-controlled so-called ‘civilised’ countries that have taken that beautiful provision away from us.
The grassroots effort now is to reclaim our agency in this.
About grandma’s needless suffering from ADA advice: “If only” are the most painful two words in the English language.
good job
I worked with about 7 different nationalities there .I loved working with them all.all so very nice.except one Chinese woman.everyone steered clear of her.she looked very mean.& never talked much.i dont know if she was shy or couldnt speak english.i guess I should have tried
But even the other foreigners seemed afraid of her.😮😮😮😮😮😮
Eating raw is good for health. Including type 2 diabetes.
Yep! One of my fave books is the Mastering Diabetes book.
She looks so young I would not have thought that she was 36.
💜☀️🍀🥗🥑🌽👍
You have to question the doctor because it is YOUR health that is at stake
Raw is a waste of time cooking food is superior. Yes to 80 percent carbs 10 fat 10 protein and zero oil but so many failed on raw food movement.
I think it might help to link to evidence to your claim. I haven't seen any that cooked food is superior, in relation to health anyway
Raw works great for me
Raw seems to work short term Now, what is short term for some is not for all.
There is absolutely no benefit to eating a raw diet! 😂
It is saving lives so I respectfully disagree.
She’s spit in if she is referring to cultural background and influence rather than melanin content of her skin
