Dr. Jason Fung: Fasting as a Therapeutic Option for Weight Loss
Вставка

- Dr. Jason Fung, MD, is a nephrologist and expert in the use of intermittent fasting and low-carbohydrate diets for the treatment of Type 2 diabetes. In this presentation, delivered on Aug. 2, 2018, at the 2018 CrossFit Health Conference in Madison, Wisconsin, Fung shares his first-hand experiences with “The Mess” and discusses how he shifted his research and medical practices as a result of those experiences.
Fung’s objectives for his presentation include:
1. Understanding why long-term weight loss is so difficult.
2. Introducing the concept of therapeutic fasting.
3. Understanding some myths and misunderstandings associated with the fasting process.
He recalls treating obese and diabetic patients with traditional methods, which included what he characterizes as poor dietary recommendations and a slurry of drugs. He explains, “It became obvious that I’m just sort of holding their hand until they get their heart attack, until they get dialysis, until they go blind, until we chop their feet off.”
“It’s really sad to realize that the profession that you’ve chosen is not really helping people,” he says. This realization compelled him to diagnose the problems associated with traditional care and seek alternative treatment methods for his patients.
Fung historicizes what he calls “the modern eating pattern,” which emerged in 1977 in the U.S. with the development of the Dietary Guidelines for Americans. He notes the 1977 guidelines led to the consumption of more grains and sugars, which in turn led to people “eating often, eating late, and eating all the time.”
Incidences of obesity and Type 2 diabetes reached epidemic levels, and the most common treatments long have been drug interventions. Unfortunately, the prevailing non-pharmaceutical prescription - to eat less and move more - has a 99.9% failure rate. Fung observes that popular wisdom tells us to blame the patient and assume he or she did not adhere to the prescription. He claims a basic understanding of metabolism suggests otherwise, however.
Fung explains why a significant reduction in caloric intake leads to a decrease in basal metabolism. This biological inevitability is ignored by the proponents of the “calories in, calories out” fallacy, he observes.
He also explains why intermittent fasting is an effective alternative to traditional treatments for obesity and diabetes. The modern eating pattern keeps our insulin levels high all the time as we eat over long durations, and when insulin remains high all the time, Fung explains, our bodies store food energy as fat, and we remain hungry.
Intermittent fasting, on the other hand, allows insulin levels to drop, which puts us in burning mode rather than storing mode.
Fung claims his recommendations are so effective that patients no longer need to say, “Oh wow, I have to go see my doctor to see what pill I need,” or, “I need to go see my doctor to see if he needs to stick a stent in me.” Instead, Fung explains, “We’re giving you the power to take back your own health, because you’re not gonna get it from anywhere else.”

Eat one healthy meal a day , do exercise, take vitamin tabs and sleep well.
That's what I've done and it's my 90th birthday next week. 😊 😊

Happy Birthday! 🎂

Have you ever noticed when you go to bed hungry you wake up feeling fine, but go to bed after eating a giant meal and you wake up starving ?
I agree but it could also be content.
Try making the giant meal low in carbs and sugar and see if it's the same.
Absolutely!
Yes I do notice. That's why my last meal of the day is 1:00 pm
Mike G why is that!!
Wow, never thought of it.... but now I think about it, you’re so right!
*My daughter drinks lots of water and urinates with the same rate, there are no other symptoms to show if those have anything to do with diabetes. This is a good information that I have gone through **Diabets.Care** She is 2 years 9 months, hale and healthy, have not done any blood test. But I am not certain if one can get diabetes at such a tender age. Please I will like to know more on that*
Water in, water out. I drink tea all day, and pee all day. it's no problem, in fact, it will keep kidneys in great shape. I suggest putting a bit of Himalayan rock salt in the water, because too much water can cause issues like brain swelling, and dehydration. drinking water flushed out nutrients (causing death) Added salt creates an electrolyte, and contains all the minerals you need.
I’d suggest you take her to Someone who knows what they are doing. Perhaps a pediatrician? What about that?
When you drink too much water you deplete your electrolytes and that actually dehydrates you and then you drink more water because you are always thirsty. I actually had this problem and I reduced my water intake and my electrolytes stop being depleted and my mouth stopped being so dry and I stoped feeling like I was always thirsty. It’s a viscous cycle and will continue until broken and it seems counter intuitive to stop drinking so much water if you are thirsty but when you realize that over drinking water actually depletes your electrolytes which in turn makes you thirsty it’s understandable. Another thing is cold drinks make you want to drink more so I don’t know if your daughter drinks ice water or room temperature water but I would switch to room temperature water so it’s not as appetizing. And the salt idea that another responder had isn’t the worse idea however that can be over done as well so I would really just reduce water intake. Eventually it will even out and it wouldn’t even take that long, possibly around a week or 2 and then she will no longer want water as much. The old saying “ too much of a good thing can be bad as well” really holds true even for something like water which isn’t something that people would think would be true but it ever applies here.
Excessive thirst and urination could be a symptom of a medical problem. Take her to a real doctor.
@@Snoball131 Nah, I'm sure discredited quacks like Fung and basement dwelling 15 year old "doctors" with a keyboard and youtube account are a much better source for medical information.

@@marshacampbell5214 he eats 3 meals in that one meal. Actually eating once a day is other end of extreme.
Hope you are still doing well. I wonder what time of day you have your one meal.
You do one meal a day for 4 days in a week. Is it continous one meal a day for 4 days? Then
What how many meals do you take on each of the remaining day.
@@DeputyBurbank You have no idea what he eats in the one meal. FWIW, I eat one meal a day, and fast two days a week, and my one meal is not nearly "3 meals" worth. And it's not and extreme...eating five meals a week is liberating in so many ways. It's awesome.

Fasting (7 day water fast) also helped me process my grief. It allowed me to overcome the physiological, psychological and spiritual challenges related to that event. Fasting is a very powerful tool for health and healing in general.
I wish I could go that long. There's been so many people more, "in touch" with the world and your body starts repairing itself because it's constantly not processing food 24/7. Good on you hope I get to your level
Thank you@@kass______4298. I have since learned that it is just as beneficial to use bulletproof coffee and tea, along with electrolyte powder in prolonged fasting. Maybe that could be the key for you. Water only fasts, with sea salt, may be more beneficial in some cases in dealing with illness, but otherwise, there are much less painless ways to fast with with great dividends.

I am a retired MD, past 70. Throughout my life I held a valid license to practice medicine in the US, UK and Italy. What Dr. Fung is saying makes a lot of sense and he is proving it with excellent documentation even though it is still considered a “ theory “. I am neither fat nor diabetic, I cannot offer any personal testimonial, but I am convinced to the point that I started OMAD myself as a lifestyle.
I wish we knew better when I went to Medical School or even later as I practiced medicine as an internist. Type II diabetes and obesity are not chronic diseases and can be CURED! It is amazing news which should be widely publicized! I wish the conference room was packed solid!
Thanks for Your work for humanity Dr. Fung!

It's not a "theory." It's been proven many times over with solid studies.
hopespringseternal70 - Arrogant much? He can’t be expected to know what wasn’t even accessible or established knowledge during his professional era. That’s not even logical. Just because the internet and foreword thinkers give us access to better ideas, knowledge and culture doesn’t mean we’re somehow superior to those who didn’t get what we have.
Previous generations laid the groundwork for the lives we now live. It’s on us what we do with what we have. Most people today can’t be bothered to even educate themselves despite greater access to information than has ever been historically available to the masses - leaving them ignorant and ill equipped to be of much use to anyone else.
The more discerning question, since fasting was an integrated part of ancient practice globally, is who buried and reversed this practice? When did they obscure it and who benefited from hiding critical life-supporting information from humanity?
One thing he didn't mention is internal fat & how it adversely affects our bodies causing cancers eventually!

I just had a 55year HS reunion with former classmates. I was sad to see wheelchairs, walking sticks, obesity. It shocked them to see a lean 139lbs 5'7 frame and prodded me to share my secret. I had 2 words-. STOP EATING. And then referred them to Dr Fung's video. Thanks doc. You're saving lives.
Amazing. I am 61 and love the bikini season. I went to my 40 year HS reunion and I was shocked! It is hard to stop eating, but we must Stop Eating poorly and excessively. I was a grazer. I am an 18:6 newby and want to lower my inflamation and body fat %.
Partly inspired by Dr. Fung, I started eating one meal a day. I lost 25 pounds in 2 months and had several chronic conditions clear up. I've been eating one (big) meal (OMAD) for 3 years now and I love it! Simplifies my life cause I don't have to think about food till dinner. And I did some math on this. If I do OMAD till I'm 70, I'll save $40,000 and 2.5 years worth of time! Just so many benefits to IF, healthwise, and otherwise.
How many calories do you take in one meal?
heck yes, sign me up
And it would be hard to quantify in $$$ the savings on Health if you continue to adopt this OMAD for the rest of your life!

I have done 3 day fasts for three consecutive weeks, and already lost 15 pounds. That is only reflective actually of my second fast, as I am currrently in a three day fast now on my third day and haven't weighed myself. The results are fucking unbelievable. I went from technically obese at 200 pounds (though I didn't look "obese"), to now looking pretty trim at 185. But I have a ways to go to get to my goal of 175 where I was 2 years ago. I just broke a 4 day fast. Will eat the next 2 days, then fast 11. This will be my longest fast yet. Why? I started IF eating OMAD 18 months ago. I was XXL and way over 300. Today? About 200 (not sure, not getting into the whole weighing thing at all) and size L. Two months ago started fasting 2 days a week. So eating just 5 times a week. I'm going for longer fasts because I know everything Jason Fung is saying is true and I know it because I've been living it and experiencing it for a year and a half now. Fasting is awesome because its the easiest, fastest, healthiest way to eat. Weight loss is merely a really awesome side effect. Autophagy, HGH, alertness, lower insulin and blood pressure levels, elimination of GERD and IBS, better sleep, more energy, less hunger. Those are the real reasons to fast. Repeat: less hunger. I was a hell of a lot less hungry this morning after 3 days without food than I was an hour after eating a bag of chips back when I was eating frequently all day long every day.
It is true that you become more adapted to this the longer you do it. That said, it was never that hard even in the beginning. Hunger is not the hardest part. Everyone assumes they'll be ravenously hungry. Because that's how you feel on every other diet. I know. I've done em. Fasting is different. The challenge isn't hunger. The challenge is habits. So break the bad habits. Save a ton of time and money and actually enjoy eating more.
Charles Miller not to mention increase in both HGH and Testosterone.
Just make your snake juice and you are good to go even for the double of days you are planning to. Keep the Fasting going bro!
Congratulations on your amazing weight loss! You will never go back to your old habits now that you know how to use food.
You are exactly right! I have also experienced many of the same benefits you described!
Well done on your achievement! I'm just doing omad six weeks and I can't imagine going back to what felt like eating all day. Most I would do (when I reach my target weight) is 2 meals but I'm going to try and stay with omad. I agree with you about the habit factor. Eating is a habit! I never thought I could give up my carb loaded breakfast but I did...replaced with a cup of black coffee. Good luck to you with the longer fasts. I haven't been brave enough yet!

Implying you don't think fasting is normal? Cuz it's not. Don't lie to your doctor, it doesn't help you. Losing that much weight in that much time is not healthy, it's a sign something is wrong.

I like the way he says "we" whenever he refers to something that is recommended by doctors. In other words, he may not agree with it, but he does not exclude himself. This was the most logical, clear, gentle explanation of weight loss I've ever heard. It used logic to break every myth and exposed every lie. I could feel the truth in it. Just amazing!
He is great.
My doctor told me to stop fasting. Even though it helped with my bowel issues, made me feel healthier, and look healthier. I have had acne since age 9. I've seen skin specialists, been on dozens of medications, treatments, elimination diets, natural skincare, korean skincare, etc. After fasting for 3 days my skin was completely clear and I didn't even touch it, and the sickness I was constantly feeling for years was gone as well.
Needless to say.... I hope you fired your doctor. Stick to your guns!

But he's giving out bad information.... Bodybuilders restrict calories to get to low body fat percentages, they don't do intermittent fasting, this is a new trend, and caloric restriction has worked for professional bodybuilders for decades.

I was trying for years to lose fat. It was really hard. Intermittent fasting was one of the hardest things I tried to do in my life. You need so much mental strength to go through day while fasting. I am currently experimenting with nextlevel diet and it's working perfectly for me. 100% recommend.
Learning how to get sober sure prepared me to handle fasting.
You have to get enough sleep when transitioning to IT. That’s key. It was hard in the beginning for me years ago, now I can’t stand to eat when I first get up . It didn’t take long for me to adjust especially when I felt so much better.
If you do a keto diet it's not hard except an initial transitional period.

I can’t believe someone is finally telling us the truth.
I just finished a 72hour water fast! I have been doing intermittent fasting and I’ve fasted for 36 hours before but pushing to 72 hours was a little more difficult than I thought. But it is definitely all in your mind and the mind is very powerful! Staying optimistic and researching about fasting and reading my Bible really helped me push through! They say it gets easier after 48 hours and it did! But the “feeling like crap” feeling still would come in waves. I just rode the waves as best as I could. I suppose it might be easier for someone who lives alone but I am a mother of 2 young children and a wife. So having to prepare meals for them etc made it a little bit more difficult. I’m also breastfeeding my youngest child which I tried to stop while I was fasting but I still nursed him in the morning and evenings. On the last day I wasn’t even hungry but my husband had bought cheesecake (shame on him) and it was literally talking to me from the fridge. I was thinking about pushing to 86 hours but I couldn’t resist. Of course I didn’t eat the cheesecake right away. I broke my fast with 2 tbsp apple cider vinegar diluted in water with a probiotic supplement. 30 min later I made a smoothie with half a banana, a small apple, kefir, coconut milk, coconut water, and a few blueberries, spinach, and monk fruit sweetener. Then an hour later I had chicken soup with vegetables. Then I had the cheesecake. Just a TINY piece! I felt great just very tired from digestion. Then a couple hours later I had a nice solid poop. Sorry if that’s TMI lol but it’s true. And I’ve read about people having diarrhea after breaking their fast. Now about 4 hours after all of that I’m feeling clean, detoxed, strong, and vibrant! I also did Pilates during the fast but nothing too intense. I lost 7 pounds and drank Lots of water with Celtic salt. Oh yeah, and I took a calcium, magnesium, and zinc supplement. Now I might go back to OMAD or 18:6 I’m not sure yet. That’s it. I hope this helps. Happy fasting😊
Im on day 6 fast. Only have cup of yoghurt every other day and apple cider vinegar and 3 cloves of garlic daily

@@ayishacalderon9388 my fasting came about accidentally, due to having dire scenarios in life that meant having to survive with nothing. Then married a god awful cook, so eating that crap was very unappealing and would refuse it, and eventually got rid of her. I'm so very grateful now haha. I keep it going now out of habit. Eating just doesn't really appeal to me anyway, the act makes me feel a bit sick after so much, then just can't be bothered making anything half the time. I can just keep going, even aged 52, no problem, ride a bike on the back wheel like a young kid, climb trees, the whole lot. My body knows when it needs food, and it knows what kind of food too, unfortunately it's sometimes sugar, but hey, we all need some vice. Got to admit to loving carbs, it quietens me down, and gives restful sleep. Too long without carbs and I can get nasty.
@@MHLivestreams Yeah, I noticed you got a bit nasty in the middle of that rant.
From marrying a 'god awful cook' to 'eventually got rid of her'. Nasty. So was the idea you left all the cooking to her. Surely you married her for more than cooking? Maybe she didn't want to live with a fat carb-eating man? Nor a nasty low-carb nerd unable to own his own temper? Sounds like you need to take care of your nutrition yourself. Kick the carbs, eat more fruit'n'veg, less meat but more pulses etc for protein, & become a nicer person inside'n' out. Try it and see....
