Dr. Jason Fung: Fasting as a Therapeutic Option for Weight Loss

  • Dr. Jason Fung, MD, is a nephrologist and expert in the use of intermittent fasting and low-carbohydrate diets for the treatment of Type 2 diabetes. In this presentation, delivered on Aug. 2, 2018, at the 2018 CrossFit Health Conference in Madison, Wisconsin, Fung shares his first-hand experiences with “The Mess” and discusses how he shifted his research and medical practices as a result of those experiences.
Fung’s objectives for his presentation include:
    1. Understanding why long-term weight loss is so difficult.
    2. Introducing the concept of therapeutic fasting.
    3. Understanding some myths and misunderstandings associated with the fasting process.
He recalls treating obese and diabetic patients with traditional methods, which included what he characterizes as poor dietary recommendations and a slurry of drugs. He explains, “It became obvious that I’m just sort of holding their hand until they get their heart attack, until they get dialysis, until they go blind, until we chop their feet off.”
“It’s really sad to realize that the profession that you’ve chosen is not really helping people,” he says. This realization compelled him to diagnose the problems associated with traditional care and seek alternative treatment methods for his patients.
Fung historicizes what he calls “the modern eating pattern,” which emerged in 1977 in the U.S. with the development of the Dietary Guidelines for Americans. He notes the 1977 guidelines led to the consumption of more grains and sugars, which in turn led to people “eating often, eating late, and eating all the time.”
Incidences of obesity and Type 2 diabetes reached epidemic levels, and the most common treatments long have been drug interventions. Unfortunately, the prevailing non-pharmaceutical prescription - to eat less and move more - has a 99.9% failure rate. Fung observes that popular wisdom tells us to blame the patient and assume he or she did not adhere to the prescription. He claims a basic understanding of metabolism suggests otherwise, however.
Fung explains why a significant reduction in caloric intake leads to a decrease in basal metabolism. This biological inevitability is ignored by the proponents of the “calories in, calories out” fallacy, he observes.
He also explains why intermittent fasting is an effective alternative to traditional treatments for obesity and diabetes. The modern eating pattern keeps our insulin levels high all the time as we eat over long durations, and when insulin remains high all the time, Fung explains, our bodies store food energy as fat, and we remain hungry.
Intermittent fasting, on the other hand, allows insulin levels to drop, which puts us in burning mode rather than storing mode.
Fung claims his recommendations are so effective that patients no longer need to say, “Oh wow, I have to go see my doctor to see what pill I need,” or, “I need to go see my doctor to see if he needs to stick a stent in me.” Instead, Fung explains, “We’re giving you the power to take back your own health, because you’re not gonna get it from anywhere else.”

*My daughter drinks lots of water and urinates with the same rate, there are no other symptoms to show if those have anything to do with diabetes. This is a good information that I have gone through **Diabets.Care** She is 2 years 9 months, hale and healthy, have not done any blood test. But I am not certain if one can get diabetes at such a tender age. Please I will like to know more on that*

Water in, water out. I drink tea all day, and pee all day. it's no problem, in fact, it will keep kidneys in great shape. I suggest putting a bit of Himalayan rock salt in the water, because too much water can cause issues like brain swelling, and dehydration. drinking water flushed out nutrients (causing death) Added salt creates an electrolyte, and contains all the minerals you need.

    • @NintCondition
      @NintCondition 2 роки тому +5

When you drink too much water you deplete your electrolytes and that actually dehydrates you and then you drink more water because you are always thirsty. I actually had this problem and I reduced my water intake and my electrolytes stop being depleted and my mouth stopped being so dry and I stoped feeling like I was always thirsty. It’s a viscous cycle and will continue until broken and it seems counter intuitive to stop drinking so much water if you are thirsty but when you realize that over drinking water actually depletes your electrolytes which in turn makes you thirsty it’s understandable. Another thing is cold drinks make you want to drink more so I don’t know if your daughter drinks ice water or room temperature water but I would switch to room temperature water so it’s not as appetizing. And the salt idea that another responder had isn’t the worse idea however that can be over done as well so I would really just reduce water intake. Eventually it will even out and it wouldn’t even take that long, possibly around a week or 2 and then she will no longer want water as much. The old saying “ too much of a good thing can be bad as well” really holds true even for something like water which isn’t something that people would think would be true but it ever applies here.

I am a retired MD, past 70. Throughout my life I held a valid license to practice medicine in the US, UK and Italy. What Dr. Fung is saying makes a lot of sense and he is proving it with excellent documentation even though it is still considered a “ theory “. I am neither fat nor diabetic, I cannot offer any personal testimonial, but I am convinced to the point that I started OMAD myself as a lifestyle.
I wish we knew better when I went to Medical School or even later as I practiced medicine as an internist. Type II diabetes and obesity are not chronic diseases and can be CURED! It is amazing news which should be widely publicized! I wish the conference room was packed solid!

hopespringseternal70 - Arrogant much? He can’t be expected to know what wasn’t even accessible or established knowledge during his professional era. That’s not even logical. Just because the internet and foreword thinkers give us access to better ideas, knowledge and culture doesn’t mean we’re somehow superior to those who didn’t get what we have.
Previous generations laid the groundwork for the lives we now live. It’s on us what we do with what we have. Most people today can’t be bothered to even educate themselves despite greater access to information than has ever been historically available to the masses - leaving them ignorant and ill equipped to be of much use to anyone else.
The more discerning question, since fasting was an integrated part of ancient practice globally, is who buried and reversed this practice? When did they obscure it and who benefited from hiding critical life-supporting information from humanity?

I have done 3 day fasts for three consecutive weeks, and already lost 15 pounds. That is only reflective actually of my second fast, as I am currrently in a three day fast now on my third day and haven't weighed myself. The results are fucking unbelievable. I went from technically obese at 200 pounds (though I didn't look "obese"), to now looking pretty trim at 185. But I have a ways to go to get to my goal of 175 where I was 2 years ago. I recommend everyone fast. And I am curious how you are now? SInce this was a year ago.

I just broke a 4 day fast. Will eat the next 2 days, then fast 11. This will be my longest fast yet. Why? I started IF eating OMAD 18 months ago. I was XXL and way over 300. Today? About 200 (not sure, not getting into the whole weighing thing at all) and size L. Two months ago started fasting 2 days a week. So eating just 5 times a week. I'm going for longer fasts because I know everything Jason Fung is saying is true and I know it because I've been living it and experiencing it for a year and a half now. Fasting is awesome because its the easiest, fastest, healthiest way to eat. Weight loss is merely a really awesome side effect. Autophagy, HGH, alertness, lower insulin and blood pressure levels, elimination of GERD and IBS, better sleep, more energy, less hunger. Those are the real reasons to fast. Repeat: less hunger. I was a hell of a lot less hungry this morning after 3 days without food than I was an hour after eating a bag of chips back when I was eating frequently all day long every day.
It is true that you become more adapted to this the longer you do it. That said, it was never that hard even in the beginning. Hunger is not the hardest part. Everyone assumes they'll be ravenously hungry. Because that's how you feel on every other diet. I know. I've done em. Fasting is different. The challenge isn't hunger. The challenge is habits. So break the bad habits. Save a ton of time and money and actually enjoy eating more.

I just finished a 72hour water fast! I have been doing intermittent fasting and I’ve fasted for 36 hours before but pushing to 72 hours was a little more difficult than I thought. But it is definitely all in your mind and the mind is very powerful! Staying optimistic and researching about fasting and reading my Bible really helped me push through! They say it gets easier after 48 hours and it did! But the “feeling like crap” feeling still would come in waves. I just rode the waves as best as I could. I suppose it might be easier for someone who lives alone but I am a mother of 2 young children and a wife. So having to prepare meals for them etc made it a little bit more difficult. I’m also breastfeeding my youngest child which I tried to stop while I was fasting but I still nursed him in the morning and evenings. On the last day I wasn’t even hungry but my husband had bought cheesecake (shame on him) and it was literally talking to me from the fridge. I was thinking about pushing to 86 hours but I couldn’t resist. Of course I didn’t eat the cheesecake right away. I broke my fast with 2 tbsp apple cider vinegar diluted in water with a probiotic supplement. 30 min later I made a smoothie with half a banana, a small apple, kefir, coconut milk, coconut water, and a few blueberries, spinach, and monk fruit sweetener. Then an hour later I had chicken soup with vegetables. Then I had the cheesecake. Just a TINY piece! I felt great just very tired from digestion. Then a couple hours later I had a nice solid poop. Sorry if that’s TMI lol but it’s true. And I’ve read about people having diarrhea after breaking their fast. Now about 4 hours after all of that I’m feeling clean, detoxed, strong, and vibrant! I also did Pilates during the fast but nothing too intense. I lost 7 pounds and drank Lots of water with Celtic salt. Oh yeah, and I took a calcium, magnesium, and zinc supplement. Now I might go back to OMAD or 18:6 I’m not sure yet. That’s it. I hope this helps. Happy fasting😊

Melissa Aklin I don’t do strictly “Keto”- in that I don’t count macros- i find that too confusing. I just eat mainly salads, moderate amounts of protein and as few carbs as possible. Check out Dy Ann Parham or the ladies w/ Eat, Live, Thrive. Both are great sources of information regarding IF for women! ☺️

Doctor fung, i was diagnosed with diabetes and fatty liver disease 3 years ago, i took metformin in the first month and i chanced upon your work.
I tired fasting 16 hours and eating for 8 hours, just very small steps at first, i stop all sweet soda drinks. And realised my body started to change. From that day i chanced upon your work,
I have not taken metformin after the first month,i have been doing my bloodtest religiously every 3 months and my blood sugar has never been over 7.0! (I was first diagnosed with diabetes, my blood sugar was at 14)
I have also lost around 30kg and i now bench press over 110kgs in gym!
My family doctor could not believe i controlled my diabetes from fasting + diet and also excercise! Thank you for your great work, it has changed my life! Keep preaching your work. Thank you so much!!
For all you people that have been diagnose with diabetes, try imtermitten fasting + cut down on your sugars + excercise! I promise you, your type 2 diabetes and fatty liver will disappear.
    Im living proof this works!

He's helped thousands of people as evidenced by all of the positive comments about people who have totally reversed T2DM, lost tons of weight, feel younger and be more healthier overall; he's the only person/UA-camr that I watch in totality to the end.

They provide me a lot of energy and also suppress my urge for food, however I don`t crash whenever they wear off which I love, and they don`t cause me to feel jittery. I did absolutely nothing special on my very own diet regime and I still manage to burned my unwanted weight to 7 lbs.
