Those TV shows were quite popular in the 80's. There was no internet back then and we were quite pleased to be able to see the bands we liked appear on TV every now and then. We didn't give a shit about the fact that they were play back performances. We didn't take them seriously and neither did the band, as you can see. We knew The Cure played live and offered great gigs anyway.
1984... Barely a soul knew who The Cure were in Canada, where I grew up. They definitely weren't played on any radio stations and there was no internet. There would've probably been a very small minority of teens who had UK connections that knew of them and brought their music back to Canada after a trip to see the relatives or something. It wasn't until Disintegration that The Cure became a band that was really on the radar.
