I was there. At rehearsal the director told Robert to try and look like he was singing, Robert said, that's how I sing. They weren't happy, so Robert loosened the strings of his bass and made even less of effort to look like he was singing. The Countdown people were furious! Such a rebel! Love him to bits.
I saw this go to air on Australian TV. They made an impact on me. Style. The loose strings made me laugh .... I got the message that they were reluctantly miming. Still My favourite Cure song.
Haha, at least Simon is still trying to look like he's doing something. Bob and Lol couldn't be any more uninterested. And those floppy bass strings are hilarious.
i love the cure for this one. robert you look so hott in this video strumming them loose string lmao! great job showing them whos boss on this show. true fans know the cure dont like to lip sing! thanks rob for showing us when you had to
Thanks, watching them on countdown all those years ago singing Primary got me into them, saw The Cure last night in Sydney, amazingly not only do they still sound brilliant with no support act they pretty much played all their songs for 3 straight hours.
Wow, I remember this! I was 16, & the Cure are still my favourite band. Just saw them recently in Sydney too, we were up the very front. Incredible experience.
+rebjiii. Mine are The Figurehead, The Drowning man, A strange day, A Short term effect, One hundred years, The Funeral Party, Lost, The Promise, From the Edge of the Deep Green Sea, Lament and so on and so on......
With the unplugged basses with loose strings, I got sidetracked and almost didn't notice that the audience was full of 10-year-olds. Listen to them shout "yay" at the end. :)
This is great! I have a 'bizillion' video comps and 'audience-taped' (bootleg) performances collected over the years..and I've never seen this!! Awesome!
I love seeing them mime. Whether it's on a show like this or in a video. You'll notice that in some videos and shows like this that Simon and Porl don't even wear guitar straps! Hilarious. Thanks for posting this!
I bought The Cure's album "Faith" after this show. So even if it was not a "live" performance it served to showcase The Cure to the Australian public. If only The Smiths had appeared on Countdown my life would have been so much easier! Absolutely none of my friends had even heard of The Smiths.
i totally ADORE THE CURE!!! i've been a fan of their music since I was a kid!! and there's nothing & no one can change that. haha!! GO TO THE PHILIPPINES GUYS!! haha
Simon is bravely pretending that he's playing, meanwhile Robert doesn't even try on purpose, haha, I love them! (and they both look so-damn-good here, oh god)
hahaha I love this! they don't give a damn because they hate miming, in fact , Robert is playing bass too... and those loose strings! xD BTW they look so good!!!
You are aware that the track WAS recorded with two bass guitars, aren't you? Can't you hear the fact one's running through a flanger effect, the other with a hint of reverb!? Why else did you think there are two involved on the footage?
Both Robert and Simon turned the tuning keys of their basses until the strings were really loose, heck if they're not playing for real anyway, why not fuck around a bit?
@petejt um., no , ur wrong, Countdown was amazing for what it was. Just before the news with no commercials and international and local bands blowing everyones loungerooms away 5 nights a week after a shit day at work. I was just a kid and grew up with it and took it for granted. I look back at this now and think "Fuck Yeah!" u'll never see this again. And everyone took the piss out of playing live - google Iggy Pop on Countdown, the dude stuffs it down his pants as though his dick can sing :P
I was there. At rehearsal the director told Robert to try and look like he was singing, Robert said, that's how I sing. They weren't happy, so Robert loosened the strings of his bass and made even less of effort to look like he was singing. The Countdown people were furious! Such a rebel! Love him to bits.
But in Top of the Pops, same song, they did the miming...
@MsHariklia Hahaha 🤣 Classic! what a legend!
I was just doing what the producers wanted 🤷♂️
We love Rebellious king!
Love how he’s not even trying and occasionally touching the bass stings and they’re going wilder than him! Love it 😂😂😂
I saw this go to air on Australian TV. They made an impact on me. Style. The loose strings made me laugh .... I got the message that they were reluctantly miming. Still My favourite Cure song.
so many years later, this song is still amazing, the baseline is a classic, a timeless piece of music!
What can I say? Masterpiece. My fovourite.
silly that these early pop shows didnt have the bands playing live. The Cure would have easily smashed this tune live!!!!
It would have been cool to hear Robert live on bass not just in the studio.
***** Yes and he's playing guitar. It would be cool to see him play a different instrument. That's all.=)
***** My hands are up,I surrender. L.o.L. =)
***** The Fender VI is not a bass. Its a baritone guitar. Not the same thing. Its somewhere halfway between a guitar and a bass. Pretty much.
Milk Carton Yes it is.
it can never be the same
oh, please don't change
Haha, at least Simon is still trying to look like he's doing something. Bob and Lol couldn't be any more uninterested. And those floppy bass strings are hilarious.
One of my favourite Cure songs and them trolling Countdown was fantastic
i love the cure for this one. robert you look so hott in this video strumming them loose string lmao! great job showing them whos boss on this show. true fans know the cure dont like to lip sing! thanks rob for showing us when you had to
My favourite show of them
Thanks, watching them on countdown all those years ago singing Primary got me into them, saw The Cure last night in Sydney, amazingly not only do they still sound brilliant with no support act they pretty much played all their songs for 3 straight hours.
damn damn damn!!! Robert no se ve guapo, lo que le sigue!!! SE VE FASCINANTE, HERMOSO, SEXY, DIVINO, SE VE TAN SEXY, QUE NO PUEDO DEJAR DE VERLE!!!
Wow they sound EXACTLY like the album!! haha 'hats off to Robert for standing his ground. We will not Lip Sync we are real musicians!
lol you're trolling, right? their live performances did sound almost identical to their studio work, tho
T K you can see he’s taking the piss by how he’s strumming the bass. Not even trying. Did the same on a number of Banshees “live” performances.
Wow, I remember this! I was 16, & the Cure are still my favourite band. Just saw them recently in Sydney too, we were up the very front. Incredible experience.
Given the broadcast date this is a ridiculously high quality upload.
this is one of their best songs. My other favorites are love song, lullaby, play for today , Push , in between days, Harold & joe and close to me
+rebjiii. Mine are The Figurehead, The Drowning man, A strange day, A Short term effect, One hundred years, The Funeral Party, Lost, The Promise, From the Edge of the Deep Green Sea, Lament and so on and so on......
PPTTCureboy from your list I only like LAMENT....there were a lot of very mediocre songs on FAITH, PORNOGRAPHY and The TOP
Quelle magie sonore. Incomparable !
With the unplugged basses with loose strings, I got sidetracked and almost didn't notice that the audience was full of 10-year-olds. Listen to them shout "yay" at the end. :)
And they are all clapping with their hands above their heads. Is that how Australian kids clap hands?
i finally saw thew cure on youtube. i am a metal head but robert smith is fucking awesome
Finally get to see this clip ....bout time ..
Love it. .
The cure siempre me trae grandes recuerdos de los ochentas ( secundaria)
This is great! I have a 'bizillion' video comps and 'audience-taped' (bootleg) performances collected over the years..and I've never seen this!! Awesome!
Great song from a great band. Qui aurait cru à leurs débuts que ce groupe originaire de Crawley allait devenir intemporel !!!❤❤❤❤
Sweet adolescence ! Hear the applause at the end, the public are just kids. Did they know the luck they have seeing Cure ?
( even in playback )
I watched this on TV in 1981. I bought the cassette tape! It was the coolest song on the planet at the time.
I love seeing them mime. Whether it's on a show like this or in a video. You'll notice that in some videos and shows like this that Simon and Porl don't even wear guitar straps! Hilarious. Thanks for posting this!
Seriously, amazing story. worth the thumbs up.
I bought The Cure's album "Faith" after this show. So even if it was not a "live" performance it served to showcase The Cure to the Australian public.
If only The Smiths had appeared on Countdown my life would have been so much easier! Absolutely none of my friends had even heard of The Smiths.
i totally ADORE THE CURE!!!
i've been a fan of their music since I was a kid!!
and there's nothing & no one can change that. haha!!
GO TO THE PHILIPPINES GUYS!! haha
such a wonderfull cureperiod
Simon is bravely pretending that he's playing, meanwhile Robert doesn't even try on purpose, haha, I love them! (and they both look so-damn-good here, oh god)

HOLY SHIT SIMON
Ooooh remember, ohh please don't change.

haha Funny stuff!
I just wanna know, how the hell is the video quality so damn good? I wish all old videos had quality like this!
great times
Back when they were a young Punk band.
Post punk
@@kevincorgan1576 The stage had a Punk aesthetic.
@@spongerobb1894 I meant the music but yeah.
what a fucking legend!
The days when TV programmes DIDN'T ALLOW bands to play live, seem so long ago now. Still a great song though!
hahaha I love this! they don't give a damn because they hate miming, in fact , Robert is playing bass too... and those loose strings! xD
BTW they look so good!!!
OMGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGG !!!!!!!! THE BEST !!!!!!
Simon, dang it! You make me have a crush on you even bigger everytime! >:O
Oh! está bien Genial el video
Yeah, I agree.
hay algun hombre mas hermoso en el mundo que robert?
He 's A M A Z I N G
You are aware that the track WAS recorded with two bass guitars, aren't you? Can't you hear the fact one's running through a flanger effect, the other with a hint of reverb!?
Why else did you think there are two involved on the footage?
Cool.
1:28 lol
lovely,pulling legs
Both Robert and Simon turned the tuning keys of their basses until the strings were really loose, heck if they're not playing for real anyway, why not fuck around a bit?
@simionTheOne What I meant was that the video quality is superb, it's like a modern camera, I know it's early 80's
Damn Roberts strings are so loose
+Mindy Caruso They did that on purpose as they were not allowed to play live.
+Karen White yeah i know lol I was just stating a fact! thanks though
;D
+Karen White they weren't allowed to play live?
I'm not sure I follow.
Samuel Smith When bands used to play on Countdown they had to mime to the recorded version..
Ben Affleck is that you? Simon was soooooooo cute.
+JenniePlusOne he still is
Yes you are quite right. he looks great for his age.but he was just adorable in his youth.
+JenniePlusOne ikr :)
Best live performance ever ... energy levels are at the max though Simon looks lacklustre and let the side down
What a nice videocamera... it doesn't seem like 1981
Ha ha, they look so fucking bored faking it up there. They are hardly even pretending. Such a great tune too.
1:26 - 1:30 Lol duckface
So funny how RS was so un animated whenever he had to lip synch- but his concerts are so vibrant
The biggest slap in the face to an artist is paying them to mime
Whats the string made of?, STRING.
su bajista simón gallup?
I love them when they went to TOTP!!!!! Love their lip sync!!! hahahahaha
Where's your Blog??
gdzie się podziały pierwotne uczucia odczucia nie ma ich nigdzie nie ma
GAHAHAHAHAHA too good
@norcoriders99 I guess this is why they fired him a few years later, wasn't it?
how to get this hairstyle Bobs hairstyle?
Is Simon wearing lipstick?!!! & blusher?!!! Eeeeeek!!!!!
I think I remember that! Wasn't it when he was playing Smells Like Teen Spirit that he looked like he was practically eating the mic lol?
A sign of this lexia on the title.
ja! este video es de coleccion,!
jeje "vamos a tocahe" -miky gonzales
Not even pretending to play!
what happend with thi bass?
hilarious
What do Smith plays?
no, i mean wtf he is doing
They hate miming don't they.. Robert doing the strum, Lol bored shitless and only Simon making half an effort. hahaha
rare video?
Thanks. Just realised I'm the top comment! Lots of Cure stuff on my blog, if you're interested.
Where can I find your blog?
@norcoriders99 It's a great video, you obviously don't get it. It's an intentional mood of irony.
gotta luv it ,, they weren't even trying lol
Smith completely taking the michael out of this moldy cheese TV program by playing with the limp strings on his axe - priceless
@biffmuncher23
Here here!
He actuallly plays bass in this song.
they're trippin' ballz
+Ryan Severson why do u say that
+Mindy C because The Cure did a lot of acid?.... ?
Ryan Severson yeah I know I thought you saw his big ass pupils
@petejt um., no , ur wrong, Countdown was amazing for what it was. Ok Robert, let loose of the string. 2:00 It isn't looking real. hehehehahhaha
The contempt was palpable, no self respecting band wants to lip sync their own song. The '80s media controlled all that was visible.
Give Me It though..
