Hey there Jim! Thank you so much for playing my game! I just fainted, like four times. Thanks so much! The game actually runs a lot better on 1080p monitors so I am sorry that you were having some performance issues!
One of the things I loved about that early 3D, low-poly look when it came to horror games was it gave you just enough detail to make things out but was unclear enough that you had to use your imagination. Works great for stuff like Silent Hill and ShadowMan - "is that wallpaper or skin?" ...that was sometimes accidentally helped by the polygons stretching when the camera moved :P
This is why I feel sad there's only HD remakes of Resident Evil etc. available on Steam. Low-poly zombies (especially) creep me out like nothing else, even in non-horror games like Thief. Although having played Alone in the Dark as a kid might have traumatized me in this case :p
+Fors Clavigera I agree with you completely. Especially with the Demon Children from Silent Hill. Their faces were so low res that to this day I still have no idea what they look like. The only official artwork I ever saw in a gaming magazine made them look like jack o lantern faced shadows. So you know. Nothing like how they look in the game. =/
A couple years late, but I completely agree. The PS1 type of graphics for horror games looked like something you'd see in your own nightmares. You could tell what it is, but it looks distorted and otherworldly which makes your imagination kick in. With so many games trying to emulate games from the NES era, I think a genre of games emulating the PS1 type of textures especially for horror games would be amazing.
In general I liked, and still like playing new PS1 games because they all kind of need to create their own style. Nowadays most all games are able to be damn near photorealistic or at least crystal clear artsy style and it just makes games feel mushy. Trying out the Medievil remake it's so easy to feel it. Back then the zombies and mutated people didn't seem to have faces or even logical figures. Now in remake it's just "Oh, a crazed farmer with boils like in thousand other games"
Okay, Mr. Sterling, we've taken a lot of crap from you! We've been called names and we've been criticized, but being called PC ports of Arkham Knight is going too far!
This is pretty cool but what inspiration caused them to make a game about Hideo Kojima stuck in Konami Building? And how did they get accurate models of Konami bosses and rigged them to move in such a accurate way?
I uploaded a video of some gameplay footage of a 23 years old shmup for the SNES called Axelay the other day, it got a copyright claim by Konami. #FucKonami
EvilHenchman It was for the sound track during a boss battle though. ;) I think the track "Spider", first real boss I think. And I just deleted the video. :p
When I think of the fact that we'll never actually get to play Silent Hills I imagine that's what it's like when you learn your wife doesn't love you anymore.
Speaking of Konami, someone should make a pachinko machine inspired by all their recent adventures. It would look like a giant turd with a giant lever, and it would smell of ignorance and everlasting grudges. And on the front of it, in big neon letters it would say..... #FucKonami
The tension is PALPABLE! God I loved Silent Hill back in the day and I have no idea how I had the balls to play it alone when I was in middle school. Just watching this made me crazy uncomfortable. Well done to you, +GamingEngineer!
the protagonist's walking animation reminds me of the robot characters from Logic Quest. he walks exactly the way they did. he even looks a bit like them. incidentally, i do enjoy the dithering and affine texture mapping. its a nice touch!
BunnyHop does some good videos too. I just found from a game design perspective and not a reviewers perspective Extra Credits do a really good job that's more unique compaired to a lot of channels out there. I'd also suggest taking a look at RagnarRox who equally do some good stuff.Swogetti Swindon
+Madness1 if you into indepth gamedesign Diskussion check out mr btounge. holy shit his vids are not frequent but the quality he brings to the table is unmatched. (sry Jim, pls dont saintsrowdildo me i like yours too)
+Swogetti Swindon Please don't hold TB in high regard. Superbunnyhop does good videos but that's not because TB recommends them. And please stop substituting everything with a K. You are not Mortal Kombat.
I like this. Have you considered a segment, maybe a monthly or quarterly video about Kickstarters you're backing or games you're keeping an eye on. A way to help smaller dev's get traction for projects they're doing.
+necropig I can't make out the kanji in the third line beyond 彼は・い(病?)気, but the second line also mentions there being a situation they're not too fond of relating to their teacher. When you put the two lines together, the 'story' might get a bit dark. lol
This looks great! I hope the main character's model/walking animation is just placeholder. I hope they polish this up, add more music, and some video cutscenes.
Anyone else got that picture in your head when jim read that letter? Hideo Kojima trapped inside the Konami offices wich have become a silent hill horror scene.
Actually looks really interesting, hoping that they finish it. As soon as he opened door 100 I had a huge hit of playing the first Silent Hill and seeing the otherworld for the first time.
lol the note at 3:17 says "when we went to the bathroom I told to the teacher that there is a chance I dont like him" -- ((the last row is unreadable for me, too blurry)) totally unrelated to the English text
This looks very promising, that enemy design is very creepy coupled with good sound design gives a very cool experience. If I was playing the game I bet I would be scared.
I like that the game actually emulates the way the playstation 1 would sometimes render textures all wonky and wavy... It's a nice tough. Though if they were truly accurate they would actually shift up and down as the camera moved or panned horizontally through the environment.
I'm impressed they mimicked the screen dithering, now all they need to do is recreate the fixed-point 3D of the PSX and get themselves some nice and awful vertex wobbling.
It did remind me of those evenings I spent alone in a room playing SH1. Ah, there was a time. As a bonus feature, the developer should consider adding a female protagonist and calling her Marry Hason.
This was legitimately one of the most entertaining games Jim's reviewed; honestly no idea why no one's had this idea before or acted on it. The dev truly grasps the essence of the PS1 horrors and the result looks perfectly in line with what one would expect from the system. If I had to make any criticism, it's that the main character looks excessively bad and stiff even for the time period, the still images don't have to be THAT pixelated (the PS1 had quite beautiful prerendered images), and the reload getting rid of the previous bullets doesn't really make any sense. Still, A+ effort, and I'm keeping a close eye on it.
The first note doesn't match the text on the screen, it says something about the students talking about their teacher on the way to the toilet and that his voice sounds like he's sick all the time (and they don't like it).
Oh this is fantastic! My only criticism would be that it's a little bit too... on the nose to be called a tribute? The font, the Otherworld-style grating, the snowfall in summer. It might be more appropriate to call it a Silent Hill fangame than something that was simply inspired by the series.
:o I think you're playing as Kojima! Silent Hill game, Hideo, character looks like him, escaping from an evil place, cameras everywhere (visual style suggests that to me). The unofficial title of this game should be "Konami Hill"!
There needs to be a point in this game where you defeat some kind of bloated many-fanged monstrosity by pulling a lever, and there must be a character nearby to enthusiastically command you to "Hit the lever!"
While Jim made his joke about the curved flashlights, I think of them as being more of a survival game thing. The Last of Us and Mad Max both have them.
I remember watching NitroRad play an earlier version of this game (check out his channel, he has some really good Silent Hill videos, going over each game in the series). I would love for this to come to a handheld that way you can play it in the dead of night while under the covers with no light except that coming from the screen.
Personally, im enthralled by having this sub-genre of horror explored by indie developers. In my opinion, the clunkyness of the controls and vague visuals actually heighten the experience
On the topic of resolution, maybe have two modes. Classic, where its as close to a PS1 game as possible - low resolution, limited framerate etc. But also have a "HD Remake" mode where you can use any resolution and framerate you like?
The letter at around 3 minutes says something like this : When we go to the bathroom I don't like the teacher. I'm feeling bad. or something like that. super hard to make out.
Just as a suggestion, what I find this game lacks as far as its Silent Hill roots go is that I feel we need really strong writing and understanding of the main character and how they are connected to the bad place/monsters/horror environment. This is on the right track as far as visuals and setting and all the flourishes go, but I do feel it needs attention on the writing side of things. We need to care about the human element of the story :) good so far though. I love the graphics a lot.
This was the first time I said "Wow!" out loud to seeing such graphics in quite awhile. Not because I think they look awful, it's because they are impressive! They emulate the PS1 graphical capabilities to a surreal tee. I wouldn't mind seeing more games in this style.
This game looks pretty good actually, it looks like a ps1 game which is the intention, the music sounds like a silent hill game it accomplishes what it wanted to do, it's good.
The Japanese at 3:17 doesn't read as what the English text is. It actually reads something about the times students go to the toilet in class. It has the air of google translate to it though. Cute.
Man, this is the kind of game I've been wanting to see on Steam. If anyone could make a PSX-style RE-style game for Steam, that would be pretty cool. (Make inventory management less of a pain, though.)
I just want to point out the first line of the first note you read translates to something like "it is time we go to the bathroom," and not whatever the english text read.
Your not culturally ignorant just because you can't pronounce a name or read a language, Jim. It may get on peoples tits when you mispronounce something, but it's not that big of a deal. Just because I can't read a language doesn't mean I'm ignorant to the culture it comes from.
I think it's fantastic that this game "wears its inspiration on its shoulder". If Konami is going to utterly neglect a title we love and refuse to produce content, then the likely thing to do is create our own.
jim, i have no idea how or indeed why you do not have a metric fuckton more subscribers. but i came to leave a humble coment with no real ryme or indeed reason... have a good day and keep up the good work.
Well, I hope this runs on mac, I'm gonna go and find out, know full well i'll love this. I'll be keeping my eyes on this game without a doubt, its rough and needs work, but it's a great start! :D
Is it bad that 2 years later I notice on the clock they wrote 4 as IIII instead of IV and it's REALLY bothering me. Also what the fuck is that symbol for 9? It's like a V with part of the X going through it. This isn't how numbers work!
Hey Jim, not sure if you know this but I think there are adds being run on your videos. I say this because I ran into an add. Not sure about everyone else.
You know Jim, I don't consider myself a hack developer. I started making an app for pebble watches yesterday, you know what I didn't do yesterday? Release it! Why? Well, it wasn't done. I finished it today. Then I wrote my description and made some promotional images for it. Then and only then did I release it. I downloaded my own release and tested it further, I did discover a small bug and I fixed it immediately. My point is, why can't game developers (Cobra studios etc.) be more like me (not only releasing my content when it's ready but listening to users and supporting it after release)? Sorry, this sounds terribly arrogant but honestly Steam shouldn't be in the state it's in. The pebble community has quite a barrier to entry (for hack devs I mean) so you don't tend to get mounds of shite piling up in the 'store' (quotes because it's all free except companion apps). Anyway, that was quite a good game today, I am reminded that it's not all bad.
the first line on that first piece of paper says something about going to the bathroom anyone know the rest? cause i don't think its the same as the english
Hey there Jim! Thank you so much for playing my game! I just fainted, like four times. Thanks so much! The game actually runs a lot better on 1080p monitors so I am sorry that you were having some performance issues!
OMG!!! For some reason I'm feeling kinda proud. I'm so happy for you buddy :)
+GamingEngineer :-D
Looking forward to seeing what's next for the game!
+GamingEngineer
Quick question, is this a port of an older game, or is it totally new? I ask because the site says ©1999
I know this sounds like a stupid question.
+Wise Sage Bum It's a new game. It has been in development since 2012. The copyright is there for cosmetic reasons.
+GamingEngineer
Gotcha. It all makes sense now 0.o
Good luck on the game!
Did he just call me a PC port of Arkham Knight?
+sentinelx1337 I think this might be Jim's best insult thus far.
+Nightmare78hAlo it was certainly offensive.
+Nightmare78hAlo Definitely the most hurtful.
The konami pachinko machine was the most hurtful lol
+sentinelx1337 he could've called you Konami, at least he didn't go that far

Yep , I will have to use that insult in my next PVP match .
+Count Xero Literally burns my skin. Felt like acid when I heard it.
What about the Donald Trump presidential campaign supporters one? That was the worst.
XoxeroThePoet I must have missed that one. Good lord, that is simply cruel.
XoxeroThePoet
Oh, wow. I don't think I watched that one!
"Hello, you PC Ports of Arkham Knight". Dude. Harsh.
Being compared to the Arkham Knight port might be the worst comparison ever made about me.
haha , too true .
+Thousand Daggers same and my friend cosntantly calls me a pedophile
Nah, the Donald Trump campaign advisers still insults me to this very day. Everything else pales in comparison.
Not as bad as being called Konami executives.
JackZake64 Oh man, you got me there! So true.
This is pretty cool but what inspiration caused them to make a game about Hideo Kojima stuck in Konami Building? And how did they get accurate models of Konami bosses and rigged them to move in such a accurate way?
"PC ports of Arkham Knight?" Jim, I never thought you could be so cold.
I uploaded a video of some gameplay footage of a 23 years old shmup for the SNES called Axelay the other day, it got a copyright claim by Konami. #FucKonami
+MMDE normally, I'd ask you to admit that you're just kidding, but we all know you're not. how utterly ridiculous.
EvilHenchman It was for the sound track during a boss battle though. ;) I think the track "Spider", first real boss I think. And I just deleted the video. :p
Eh Sony pictures does the same thing.
***** Sony pictures? Do they do games? Ah, I see they do some mobile games. :s
No I mean they flag amvs, vids with their music, not videogames though.
Funny how a simple little game made in gamemaker by one person is scarier than the Triple A Silent Hill games made in America
Wow. Jim, thank you so much for sharing this. +GamingEngineer, thank you for making this! I will most definitely be downloading and giving it a try!
Something something Konami, something something pile of poo.
You just said the same thing twice.
+GammaWALLE OOOOOHHHHHH
+GammaWALLE Sick burn!
When I think of the fact that we'll never actually get to play Silent Hills I imagine that's what it's like when you learn your wife doesn't love you anymore.
Out of all the stuff you called us for years. This one crossed the line.
Speaking of Konami, someone should make a pachinko machine inspired by all their recent adventures. It would look like a giant turd with a giant lever, and it would smell of ignorance and everlasting grudges. And on the front of it, in big neon letters it would say.....
#FucKonami
"I'm worried about walking into any room, to be honest with you".
And that, ladies and gentlemen, is true survival horror"..
That is by far the worst insult you've ever delivered to a fellow gamer Jim. I wouldn't even wish that upon Konami. Have some honor sir!
+Nate Puterbaugh Hold on a second. Don't insult the PC port of Arkham Knight by comparing it to Konami, it doesn't deserve that.
#FuckKonami
+Nate Puterbaugh Dude, this one was bad, but I don't think anything can equal the time he called us "Konami executives".
This just made my little sickly heart go all aflutter. I hope to see a full play through from Jim when its fully finished.
13:07 that uncaring bored face while slowly walking away from monsters is unintentionally funny.
The tension is PALPABLE! God I loved Silent Hill back in the day and I have no idea how I had the balls to play it alone when I was in middle school. Just watching this made me crazy uncomfortable. Well done to you, +GamingEngineer!
An independent survival horror game released in 2015 with a good flashlight that doesn't require fucking batteries. Can you imagine that?
This game is committing most of the horror game sins that Jim listed out and he's still enjoying it. Just thought that was interesting
That was quite a peppy opening for that note, given its content.
Out of all the names you've called us, THIS is the one that's gone too far? XD
I respect that demo for what it was. Thanks Jim!
the protagonist's walking animation reminds me of the robot characters from Logic Quest. he walks exactly the way they did. he even looks a bit like them.
incidentally, i do enjoy the dithering and affine texture mapping. its a nice touch!
you said a while back that you would do a jimquisition on spec ops the line. is that gonna happen still?
+sparkie1j It's not a Jimquisition, but Extra Credits did two good videos about it: watch?v=kjaBsuXWJJ8
+Madness1 skrew extracredits. watch TB approved superbunnyhops video; Google the link im on mobile and cant be botherd to do so
BunnyHop does some good videos too. I just found from a game design perspective and not a reviewers perspective Extra Credits do a really good job that's more unique compaired to a lot of channels out there. I'd also suggest taking a look at RagnarRox who equally do some good stuff.Swogetti Swindon

"Hello you PC ports of arhkam knight" That's libel.
PC ports of Arkham Knight? The fuck?
You wanna take this outside pal?
Serpico's Beard them are fightn words
Holy shit. That intro was just uncalled for.
I like this. Have you considered a segment, maybe a monthly or quarterly video about Kickstarters you're backing or games you're keeping an eye on. A way to help smaller dev's get traction for projects they're doing.
The notes it seems arent direct translation, the one in room 101 mentions about the time they all went to the toilet :s
+necropig I can't make out the kanji in the third line beyond 彼は・い(病?)気, but the second line also mentions there being a situation they're not too fond of relating to their teacher. When you put the two lines together, the 'story' might get a bit dark. lol
+sirflimflam Glad you picked it up too, I am crap with kanji :p
Weeaboos!!! Aaaaa.ahhhh!
+Uly Panettieri I wouldn't go that far n_n
+Uly Panettieri That's a bit harsh :P They're only talking translations with avatar pics...
This looks great! I hope the main character's model/walking animation is just placeholder. I hope they polish this up, add more music, and some video cutscenes.
My next game shall be called Soundless Incline.
Man, this really does feel like a PS1 game. Kinda makes me wish for more games with this kind of style, it brings back memories...
Looks like this game is nearly complete and ready for release Jim
Arkham Knight needs to be a banned memory in itself.
Anyone else got that picture in your head when jim read that letter?
Hideo Kojima trapped inside the Konami offices wich have become a silent hill horror scene.

Kojiima would be proud.
* Sheds tear *
This looks very promising, that enemy design is very creepy coupled with good sound design gives a very cool experience. If I was playing the game I bet I would be scared.
I'm so proud to be subscribed to GamingEngineer.
That's the first time I've seen a game trying to emulate PS1 looks that pulls it off well
I like that the game actually emulates the way the playstation 1 would sometimes render textures all wonky and wavy...
That greeting...how bloody dare you!!!! xD
It did remind me of those evenings I spent alone in a room playing SH1. Ah, there was a time.
As a bonus feature, the developer should consider adding a female protagonist and calling her Marry Hason.

Did you not realise that you originally had the clock set to 4:40 not 4:35?
Oh this is fantastic! My only criticism would be that it's a little bit too... on the nose to be called a tribute? The font, the Otherworld-style grating, the snowfall in summer. It might be more appropriate to call it a Silent Hill fangame than something that was simply inspired by the series.

PC port of Arkham Knight ???? What a nasty thing to call us. Take it back !
"I will be coming back, and I'm bringing my new toys with me."

this looks actually good!
I just want to point out the first line of the first note you read translates to something like "it is time we go to the bathroom," and not whatever the english text read.
Jim, your original click configuration was 4:40, not 4:35.
This screams Silent hill 1 and I freaken love it! ^_^ I want to play it now!

+Elf Monster srry
Is this game the real life experiences within the walls of Konami Japan?
Yes. The evil they kept for 6 years are the Pachinko machines. The protagonist is probably Hideo Kojima.
Anyone else feel like a Jill Sandwich all of a sudden?
I think it's fantastic that this game "wears its inspiration on its shoulder". If Konami is going to utterly neglect a title we love and refuse to produce content, then the likely thing to do is create our own.

You know... This just makes me ache for a new Dead Space...
Says the answer is 4:35, sets the clock to 4:40, Jim, I don't think its just maths you struggle with :')
i miss the ps1/64 and ps2 era
At least Konami knows how clocks work.
..probably.
shit is about the hit the fan. tomorrow the most important list of the year comes out
JIm,if you keep on insulting Konami they will never send you a ladyboy Hooker again.
Thats even worse than being blacklisted!

+hobanagerik That's impossible. I have made all the soundtracks for the game myself.
GamingEngineer
Okay. It just sounds similar to something else, either game or TV show.
umm did u just call me a pc port arkham knight wow man that was the best insult ever
I would like a better overview of your inventory!
I want this game now...
I always liked the idea of a game trying to emulate that clunky polygonal look of the PS1. Makes a nice change from all the NES emulators.
I sort of want to add on my email signature FucKonami but I feel that is too much of a sacrifice to spread a message.
You know Jim, I don't consider myself a hack developer. I started making an app for pebble watches yesterday, you know what I didn't do yesterday? Release it! Why? Well, it wasn't done.
This looks so cool.
the first line on that first piece of paper says something about going to the bathroom
