    The scariest part of DeadSpace weren't the Necromorphs. The scariest part was the stress of playing tech support for the damn space ship and realizing that the simple solution wasn't going to work, so you'd have to slowly troubleshoot the problems piece by piece.

      Lol all the conversations in that game go something like good job issac we (insert action here)! Oh wait... (insert problem here) dammit! Issac says I'll fix it with the (insert action here) then a neceomorph pops in a vent and in a panic you use kinesis to grab a random chair

    The Dead Space universe clearly got rid of OSHA years ago because there are way too many safety hazards in every DS environment.
    It actually makes sense lore-wise-the human race is massively overpopulated and life is cheap. Additionally, they’re literally cloning limbs for replacement procedures, so the loss of a body part isn’t as big of an issue as it would be in reality.

      As someone who's worked industrial most of his engineering career, none of the outright safety violations in dead space shock me, but yeah when you learn that the people in power in Dead Space are all members of a literal death cult, it all makes a lot of sense as well.

      To be fair, the Ishimura was the oldest ship in the fleet. In comparison to Titan Station, the Ishimura was a run-down shit hole.

      Amazon and Tesla have essentially got rid of OSHA. If the cruelty and greed of late stage capitalism is projected into the far future, the lack of workplace safety and easy wastage of human labour is completely believable

      Hmm... a lot of things could be explained by complacency. They dont care about grav failing coz it never failed, hence lackluster countermeasures.

    In defense of the ship, it had been in service for 62 years straight and admittedly the interior had been totally overhauled on the fly by the crew as it had been repaired and upgraded over time to except new tech.
    to my knowledge the ship should of been decommissioned multiple times over.
    At least according to the wiki.

      The elevators haven't been serviced since two years before the ship even first launched. CEC are hilariously negligent.

    This is both legitimately interesting and utterly hilarious, because all I can picture is Isaac going around, not really phased by the actual horrors and necromorphs, just casually pointing out all the design flaws of the Ishimura and how things could be improved... like this is simply another day on the job.

    Fun fact: at 1:29:16 where you say the Marker's affecting Isaac with radiation...yeah, the Marker doesn't generate or produce any radiation of any kind; it's a long established bit of lore that it doesn't emit radiation and instead just an eldritch signal that's strong enough to affect organic minds and reanimate necrotic flesh.

      Not any radiation we can detect by that point, but whatever it is, it _does_ in fact radiate from the marker.
      Just because it isn't electromagnetic waves or energized particles doesn't mean it isn't radiation.

    Considering the lack of any OSHA compliance and how cheap life is in the future (plus the emphasis on limb regeneration, which is so common that literal hundreds of clones and cell growth areas are present in the medical bay), it sort of makes sense that mining and engineering suits are so heavily armored, especially the facial region. It seems like a way to cut costs: it’s much cheaper to just mass produce those suits than to actually implement safe working conditions, and by designing them to protect vital organs and lead to ‘clean’ amputations, you can just replace the poor worker’s limb and keep him working with a gravity saw the next day. Whether that’s actually viable economically is another matter, but given the lore it seems that raw material and energy is way more valuable than flesh and blood, so in that case it may very well be economically sound to plan around your workers getting their arms cut off versus actually safe railings and working conditions.

      While it sounds great and plausible, I don't see a future in which it is cheaper to regrow limbs instead of a few safety changes, especially with the virtual infinite resources that come with FTL travel. But I like the idea that megacorpos just don't care about the drone worker (which could be solved with AI) and with current events IRL, more probable.

      You're forgetting the operating conditions for the Ishimora there going to be dust micro debris and Boulder sized pieces of rock an up their literally ripping apart planets quit literally a hell for a space ship. I'm surprised things aren't more armored.

    My guy, I just found your channel and holy fuck, I honestly believe that you should turn this into a series, exploring different video games and movies' "Realism". Like Roanoke Gaming but engineer version. You pretty much already have all the bases covered: Solid editing style, great humor, knack for storytelling and explaining stuff, a podcast length video perfect for listening while doing chores, and a nigh-infinite source of materials to work with. You got your niche carved out here, bro. Just keep digging.
    That being said, I would love for you to review Prey (2017) video game. I got obsessed with that game due to it's focus on the human elements of the crew living spaces. It was a veritable sci-fi space hotel.
    I'll be watching your channel with great interest!

      ​@@RocketScienceGalleryPrey would be amazing! Looking Glass is one of those "mmmaybe it could work?" type of techs you see in sci-fi. Like the communicator from Star Trek. I outright stole it for use as "windows" for my sci-fi ships. No structural weak points in mine.
      Speaking of which you could potentially do an entire series on the ships from Star Citizen. Morphologist's architect reviews are awesome, though I often wonder if some aspects make more or less sense from an engineering point of view.

    It’s funny that in this universe this ship is old and on its last legs but the reality is that something like this existing is so technically advanced we can’t even think to develop anything like this anytime soon. But that’s what so amazing about the ishimura .. it’s because one day in the future we probably could make a replica

    The safety aspects are basically waived by how the CEC operates. They put the Ishimura in the space equivalent of international waters specifically so that they couldnt be sued by crew members for these kind of things.

    I think things starting to float off the ground when the gravity is turned off is due to the vibrations that permeate throughout the ship from the various mechanical systems. The vibrations could provide enough force to kick things off the ground.

    Not sure if anyone’s said it already, but the Centrifuge’s room does have a walkway provided above the Spinning arms. It’s just blocked by Necromorph growths once the gravity is turned on to provide the player some stress.

    I am working on a sci-fi horror game like Dead Space, and my biggest fear is that an engineer will check whether my artistic props actually make sense from an engineering perspective.

    I guess personally I never thought about the system’s infrastructure and integrity that much until you brought this up and this video is a very good and needed reminder on how we should treat our future tech and environments if we are to achieve the things that are still seen as science fictional at the moment at least.
    We have to be smart on our builds if we hope to maintain explorations in space and creating better suits that aren’t just for looks and show

      Wasn't the Ishimura; a cheap, mass-produced ship that was service in for 60 years and modified to accept new tech on fly, when it should've been decommissioned instead? I also heard similar things about Issac's suit in the canon of Dead Space.

    The first 15 minutes of things you were talking about were literally how plenty of the deaths you come across happen, right down to the dude who was stuffed into the suit kiosk by a crazed individual. It’s neat to see how these safety things sound like they were purposely omitted for the purpose of showing off the deaths and hazards of a space ship

    I'm making up a headcannon that the entire time Issac was fighting for his life and everyone else he was just casually taking notes on the poor operations of the ship to report them or some shit just
    -beheads necromorph and used one of its arms to impale another -
    As you can during that fight on a narrow walkway with no ralling if I hadn't been aware and careful I could have fallen off!

    The pa system is speaking in Chinese, however it doesn't sound very clear and are probably machine translated. What it roughly means however, should be: "New commers must go through decontamination process, or you will be quarantined and fined."

    To be fair regarding tk in zero g areas, there is inherent risks when using many real life items such as cars, or in the case of miners something like dynamite. Its possible the tech is so ubiquitous in the setting that it is just an accepted part of life at this point. I say that because in the second game, a seemingly random guy has a tk module and leaves the tk tutorial video.

    14:15 Maybe we're making the assumption that humans don't already know all those languages. Maybe Chinese is a better language for communicating culinary items while English has become the language of engineering? I like the way The Expanse universe has taken this on. Where the Belters (humans who grew up and live the majority of their lives in micro-gravity) have developed a cant that is basically an amalgam of all the most technologically advanced cultures that pushed out into space first (English, Chinese, Indian, German, Spanish, Italian... etc.)

    I'd guess they once had more than one tram on the ship but the one we access is likely an emergency one that still works. As there is enough parts of the ship locked off to us that also have other characters moving about with them making me think we just see either the main maintenance tram or a emergency one used for the event of a disaster that runs on its own line that doesn't often get used compared to what I assume would be a larger system with a few more trams for the main transport of the Doctors, scientists, miners & security forces as well as the bridge crew & officers basically all the people who aren't the engineers & such use likely a kinda larger tram that can hold more people as the one we use in game only could hold like 4 people & maybe a bit more if you crammed it but it defiantly could carry tools & stuff as well. I remember a part in the original game where you pass through an area that looks like it once held two tram lines round the area where you need to repair the tram to progress at the start. Also I think the second game also implies this. There likely also is slower ways around the ship which most people would be using as I'd assume only the engineers & stuff have to take the long trips across the ship on the regular. I also want to add about the grimy industrial look it kinda makes sense for the ship to have as well its the mining ship that's very old & on its last mission before its going to be made into a museum or scrapped. So its not like I'd guess its much more than an old ship falling apart. Like in its hayday it probably didn't have all these exposed panels & stuff but now that its so old & things break so often the engineers just go like F*ck it it'll break soon enough again & doing the whole panel thing is time consuming. Also the ships damage from the current alien zombie situation could help cause more of this. I do like it as a old falling apart ship. But the colony is another thing which kinda seems unsafe for what it is.
    Edit: on the centrifuge. At least in the original game it made sense why Isaac had to take such a dangerous gamble by passing the area where the arms where moving. You could see that some Necromorph growth was over the area & I think part of it had broken off making the area have saftey in the before times but since you don't have time you've just gotta start the thing up instead of how in a time when they didn't have monsters trying to kill them they could make a makeshift bridge to help the person reach the button & then get back over & later on when they are safe they could turn it off & rebuild the walkway. I guess the remake missed that detail leading to a nonsensical area.

    In an audio log it's explained why the force gun doesn't kill Mercer
    Mercer asks Temple to help him build something for the Marker
    Temple insits he needs his force gun for it
    Mercer doubts it but lets him take it however he has him remove several modifications that make the force gun lethal
    Which is why it only injures Mercer in the cutscene

    This is such a fantastic video analysis! I would also like to add that when it comes to lighting, there was a study done that blue light also contributed to lower amounts of anxiety and depression. This would be beneficial on long space flights. Looking forward to your analysis of the weapons and suit riggings.

    I wanted to add that holographic terminals in Dead Space appear to utilize solid light tech, since in the Dead Space: Downfall the crew on the bridge seemed to be able to directly physically touch the holographic terminals as if they were solid objects.

    Didn’t even know this channel was a thing but glad I was recommended it. Not an engineer by any means, but I’ve worked in the oil field, construction, maintenance, forestry, warehouses, been in the military, and currently work hospital maintenance. Within all those occupations and in the future it seems the safety man is always needed and hated 😂. Lock out tag out people.

    No, the opposite actually. Instead of the "hero character solves all issues without a problem" trope, Dead Space has the "everything that can possibly go wrong, will go wrong" trope that is often seen in action films, disaster films, and sci-fi films.
    "Isaac! The tram system is broken! It needs to be fixed!"
    "Nice, you fixed it, Isaac! Great work! But now, the air filtration system just broke down! We need to fix that before we all suffocate!"
    "Great work, Isaac! You fixed it! Unfortunately, just as you fixed that, this other thing broke on the opposite side of the ship. And now you need to go fix that too!"
    "Done fixing that, Isaac? Nice, because - yup, you guess it. Now we have this other issue that just started. You need to go fix that now."
    "ISAAC! HURRY FIXING THAT! THIS OTHER THING JUST BROKE TOO!"
    One thing after another. Non-stop. You just gotta laugh after a while. Main characters in these types of stories have the absolute worst luck in the world.

      In this case it makes sense story wise since Kyne set it up this way. I actually love how they integrated this seemingly silly series of unfortunate events into the narrative.

    Stasis module slows down the kinetic energy of the target. I think that was explained in the original. Might have been retconned to a simple temporal slowing/protraction effect. I don't really remember

    Oh man, this is awesome. Would love to see such investigation for Alien: Isolation some day
    The story is similar (support crew getting on a giant wrecked space station while the protagonist is fixing things) and a lot of safety hazards you mention in this video are actually omitted there (like soft walls or multiple paths to important things).
    So it would be interesting to compare Sevastopol to Ishimura

    For a spoiler reason for the hazardous gasses being left about unsecured:
    I think the crew going crazy from the spire played a massive part. People who had access to these hazardous chemicals being urged by the spire to kill each other and themselves could have been carrying them about to use on themselves or others. Also, stuff like medical logs being left about in random places are where the person writing it left it during an emergency, being killed, or going mad.

    This is a really cool idea for a video about Dead Space - naturally most others are about the cosmic horror zombies, but in truth the Ishimura's environments themselves are as important a part of the game as the necromorphs. The ship may as well be a character in its own right

    You may have already heard this before but I was watching a OG Dead Space dev talking about how they designed the ship and one of the main jokes / montras was that it was meant to be an OSHA nightmare.

Feel I should point out though that the dialogue in the crash sequence early on mentions "guidance override not responding"... which to me implies that there is a manual override... it just wasn't working because of whatever else was going wrong with the ship at the time.

    Please make more videos like this! There's so much potential in this format! I think it's an interesting as well as a fun way to remember and appreciate the small details in these games.
    I however think avoiding spoilers is not needed, as a video like this is mostly fruitful for those who have already played the game. Otherwise there's too much to take in, if the game is unfamiliar.

    Why does no one ever talk about the “sucked into a vacuum” myth.
    The delta p between simulated earth atmosphere inside a spacecraft and space is 14psi.
    That’s 1 atmosphere to 0 atmospheres. The air rushing out from behind you would not exert a great enough force to rip you off your feet from across the room and drag you out, especially if you’re in artificial gravity. I can imagine that if you were standing by the airlock you would teeter off your feet slightly but a Leviathan being dragged into space?!

    I always appreciated the different fields of science being portrayed in scifi franchises. If a franchise decided to take every field, i.e. engineering, within its universe seriously while also having events like dead space happening, I think it would make for a very compelling and thought provoking atmosphere, especially if they nailed their presentation like dead space did.

    What would be really funny would be if they designed spacecraft irl to have hazards that had no basis except to be atmospheric because of something the engineers saw in a video game, like that scene in Galaxy Quest.

    I've never thought about the practicality aspects of Dead Space, so this was an awesome video and well thought-out! However, those slatted wall vents always felt like a blatant OSHA violation 😂

    They could honestly even go above and beyond in this world with the line based Holographic Locater found in RIGs to point out your objectives. They could have such projectors built into rooms and in the event of an emergency, a line is projected to lead the way to the nearest evacuation route.

    when you were talking about mercer and wondering why his stasis module only froze isaac. It is revealed in a later side mission that he created a special stasis module and it is why he is able to freeze people for so long perhaps thats why it only froze isaac that time. also as to why temple's force gun was underpowered it is hinted at in audio log that mercer sabotaged it i don't know if you didn't mention these as they are kinda spoilers but just in case.

    Very interesting and good video. It makes sense that a few thinks are not the highest security standard if we consider the ingame lore. The ship was build in a short time because there were not many resources left so they had to build the ship asap. So it was more or less an emergency project and it should have been the ships last mission. Well that said many thinks of course make no sense at all and are more there for gameplay/visual.
    1:23:50 the rock gets pulled up from the Ishimura and pushed from the planet itself. At least that is what was shown in the movie (if it is still canon) and that is how I understand it from that. We can see the extraction process there.

    Regarding those cut corners in terms of safety, with band-aid solutions like "Watch out!"-posters: It puts that impressive three year deadline for building the ship into perspective. Like when Microsoft installed a red LED to tell you your XBox360 is broken so they could be shipped for christmas with the known hardware problem still intact.

    Regarding the PA messages being in multiple languages: due to every crew being equipped with a RIG the ship's computer systems could reasonably be able to determine which languages are needed for a specific message based on whom it is destined to or who is present in the concerned area.

    50:06 the drains in my lab and the ones in the hall are the venting area for across the halls labs wave machine which contains tons of water and in an emergancy it floods it self the corridor and my lab blocking emergancy exits. Its one those hope that never happens on my shift 😅

    46:50 Little error. From IRL railguns we know that they also have muzzle flashes, since electrical sparks and small amounts of plasma created by the high voltage follow the projectile out the barrel. Also the Asteroid Defense Cannons are actually Mass driver cannons, so a form of railgun

      Nice catch, I didn't know that about railguns, and mass drivers would probably make more sense here too. Although, I might argue that for such a muzzle flash to occur, there would need to be air (or some other medium) for the arcs to form the plasma from, although I suppose there are a number of ways to explain that (coolant gas, spark build-up, chipping/sublimation of projectiles, ...).

      @@RocketScienceGallery That's fair, I didn't account for Vacuum(wrote that late at night) though I still believe they're electromagnetic mass driver. That's because if it was convential munition the proppelant charge would make the ammo require 2-3 times as much storage space. Also with propably aphe warheads it already would needs safe storage, add and propeelant charge it and you have ship destroying accident waiting to happen (you can ask the HMS Hood about that).

    As a machine learning researcher/ECE doctoral student. It actually makes perfect sense to me that the ADS cannons would need to be trained and calibrated individually or at least 3 cannons would need to be trained like that.
    In particular, video image recognition systems are incredibly finnicky and they dont have straightforward mathematical relationships mapping 2D image pixel data to 3D position data. Furthermore when using 3 or more cameras to construct 3D plots of position, error is incredibly prone to drift and compounding.
    It makes perfect sense to me if the training data was lost then training 3 cannons would likley be the absolute minimum you needed to do in order for the cannons in the area to figure out how to process the visual data above them given the "known" information like the distance the cameras are from each other and what the three cameras are looking at. This whole concept is known as "sensor fusion" or "data assimilation" more generally, referring to using many sensors to know about a thing above you, and visual tracking in particular is a problem which can be very finnicky.
    In other words, once the three cannons figure out how to map their own visual feeds to a plot of 3D coordinates showing all asteroids seen by the camera, I could easily see that data able to be extapolated and applied across all cannons across the ship. It would be very unreasonable if Isaac only calibrated one cannon and every other cannon started functioning at peak efficiency.

    a thing to note about the Ishimura is it's about 62 years old by the time the game starts, since it's the first of it's class I think the corporation focused heavily on getting results and likely saw numerous retrofits, many of which have increasing reliability standards that only failed because of the Marker's influence. If the marker hadn't done it's fuckery all of our grievances like untethered and un enclosed volatiles would have been a complete nonissue

    Love the video and hope to see more like it in the future, really glad this blew up for you. You’ve probably gotten this comment a lot (though I didn’t see any after a skim) but the largest nuclear detonation was 50 megatons, so a 12 megaton yield being 10 times larger is pretty inaccurate. You might have been looking at the WWII information, those were around 20 kilotons iirc
    Edit: I didn’t catch the “by the United States” part, that was 15 megatons, so still very inaccurate. I had to double check a ton because it was so wrong I felt like I had to be missing something, haha

    For the 'Atmospheric Shields' at 29:40ish, I think it's very plausible that it does indeed make use of the unified field theory; Specifically, Stasis. A very finely controlled stasis field applied only to small particles with enough strength to resist the natural atmospheric pressure being restrained would of course be strong enough to contain the stagnant/mostly unmoving atmosphere of the area- But would Not be strong enough to halt objects of larger mass that has force actively being applied to it, ie, a person walking and pushing off with their foot as they step into it.
    Similarly, but I think less plausibly due to atmospheric pressure, computer controlled stasis 'lasers' outlining the shield being produced could, hypothetically at least, re-form the field in real time to allow larger objects to pass while retaining the seal.

    Dude this video was so good. I don't know shit about engineering but when I think about it, everyhing you say makes sense. I gotta say tho, that I think some things can be a result of the Ishimura being a 60-something year old ship, and I think that just like seafaring vessels, old spaceships that are modernized will never be as efficient as modern ships that were built recently. Although this is mostly a headcanon thing that I don't think most developers thought about when designing the ship. Still, really good work you've done. You think you could cover the Sevastopol station from Alien Isolation in the same style?

    if anything the door the boss gets vented out into space through in the food storage may be for intaking cargo/offloading waste the ship can't process itself

    21:16 Water can't condense in vacuum, because the air pressure is near zero. Water will actually boil in vacuum.
    Water also doesn't get cooled in vacuum of space because vacuum doesn't conduct heat. In fact, vacuum is an outstanding heat insulator, which is why a lot of modern Thermal flask have vacuum built in them.
    26:20 this violates Newton's first law, space has zero-friction and ship will not be slowed down when the engine is off. For example, modern satellites can stay in orbit for months without having to fire their main engines.
