They leave it vague but I always thought that a Warmaster(if that was Macharius title?) could make a small astronomicon with an astropath choir. It would only have to be powerful enough to guide to the next system, then make another on a defensible planet and repeat.
@@vulkanofnocturne You can make small calculated jumps of a few lightyears without the Astronomicon, but anything bigger is just the navigators just trying to navigate the Warp by ear. Or you can set up small versions on planets like you suggested with a Pharos device, though most were lost in the Age of Strife. The Astronomicon itself requires the constant effort of The Emperor, The Golden Throne, 10,000 psykers at any given time and 1,000 of which burn out per day. Setting up mini versions of that outside the Astronomicon is beyond the tech and psyker abilities of the Imperium at "current" in any sustainable way.

I’d like to think it’s where the old ones developed their most dangerous shit during the war in heaven, but never used them as they got wiped before they had a chance. Each planet was basically a science lab of sorts on a massive scale, which is why all of them are different, yet with some key similarities.

My theory is that the Yu'Vath \ Rangdan are the same things, and are leftovers of the Old Ones, that got mad \corrupted by chaos\warp. So all that bat shit is just creations of them that turned sour.
It's funny they planned on assassinating Macharius. He was war master, a high lord of Terre, and later canonized as a saint. Killing him would have been the greatest act of heresy since Horus and made the names of anyone involved as cursed as any of the traitor primarchs.

The Ghoul Stars are the rough neighborhood that is filled with both cultists and violent gangs, but the Halo Stars is fucking death trap that looks like a appealing resort.
I was thinking that the Ghoul Stars are that ghost town that looks abandoned in daytime, but then all the eldritch horrors come out to play at night and if you can keep your head long enough, you’ll see exactly why it’s a ghost town.

I mean, the whole point is the warp is not the great evil. Just the one people focus on. The warp is a mirror of reality and even the gods are based on entities that are much worse than them that exist in reality. Humanities best bet was the federation, and that is long gone.
I managed it once through the luckiest rolls I've ever had. Deathwing terminators wiffed every attack and I managed to down exactly one of them. They then blew their morale check and got run down by fire warriors who probably were questioning the existence of a benevolent god!
Sounds like there could be a cool story where a person has to use a halo device for some reason, a good person using it for some reason knowing that they'll have to be killed but there's an immediate reason for it that makes it necessary.
And then, as they gradually become corrupted by it, they lose themselves to it and start to want to keep using it and keep living, even though they’re becoming a monster…

if you're writing a story it would be fleshed out a lot more depending on its length. But it doesn't sound like a bad idea that you could flesh out more.
Could easily be fleshed out as a story but since I don't play Necromunga I'm not sure how it would be built with the game mechanics. I have more experience writing settings for RPGs, as a Warhammer Crime story it would be an interesting one to write from the perspective of an Arbities as the disappearance of a lesser member of the spire families would be enough to justify an investigation as well as rewards for gangers to go hunting too.

Personal theory: the halo devices were weapons of last resort for whoever designed them, making their soldiers incredibly powerful. I say weapon of last resort because with the down side, they might not have expected their soldiers to live too long so who cares about down side twenty years from now?
I believe it was made as a way to force evolution amongst the species, and that it went horribly wrong when very late term side effects occurred. Hence why the civilization was wiped out.
My theory is that they are assimilation devices. Designed to indoctrinate anyone foolish enough to use one with the habits, language and appearance of its creators, overwriting their sense of self and their genetic structure. Or the same thing but specifically of a bioweapon variety. Like turning your captives into mentally broken fiends with lots of power, but because they speak the xeno language I believe it’s so they can communicate and receive orders.
Why would it render people who use them biologically immortal if they were designed for expendable soldiers? More than likely the halo devices contain some sort of digital engram of the mind(s) of the aliens who made them as a way to overwrite the minds and genetic structure of hosts that wear the devices as a way to perpetuate themselves past death.
Or maybe they were made for colonization of incredibly dangerous planets with the idea that basically the third stage was just to send them out to kill any big threats
My favorite part about the Halo Stars is how it shows that we've only really scratched the surface when it comes to the 40k universe. The idea that there could be even greater threats than Chaos lurking within the universe is so hard to wrap your mind around and just goes to show that whenever the Imperium thinks they have things under control, they really don't, not in the slightest.
The idea of there being even greater threats is kind of silly though. The imperium and the other civilised xenos, which are what most narrative in 40k is based on, are already hopelessly outmatched. Throwing even more on top of it is redundant.

Hard to imagine a _greater_ threat than chaos or nids, at least on the grand scale. But I can absolutely believe something far more horrifying to face on a smaller scale. It may not devour the galaxy, but that's cold comfort to whoever it decides to violate in it's neighbourhood.

They even named one of the planets "Ultima Macharia" which means "Macharia the Furthest" - a direct analogy to the cities found by Alexander (all named Alexandria) and one of them - Alexandria Eschate - was located on the fringes of the empire which almost bordered China. Alexandria Eschate means, suprise!, "Alexandria the Furthest" or "Alexandria on the Edge".

Macharius did not actually pull back. There is a series called the Macharian Crusade which explains exactly what happened. Suffice to say there was Inquisition level series of conspiracy involved and our boy, Macharius, died a hero (according to the official accounts).

I mean Halo takes place in the 26th Century so one could argue that it took place in the distant past of the 40K Universe. As with taking place in the Halo stars thats more difficult since alot of stuff takes place on Earth. But you are right, amusing nonetheless
@@Guellap what if humans theoretically split off there and called it earth. The Halo stars can be a very large area and thus explains wider Halo. The Precursors are basically old ones and maybe in the distant past the Necrons and the Forunners were Allie’s but the eldar never fought them (maybe the orks did). Then the Forunners developed the Halo Rings but instead of destroying the galaxy they destroy the region. Basically the Lovecraftian horrors of the stars are supper evolved flood (a Old One creation) maybe due to it being so demonic the emperor can’t see it. Then the races of Halo are just survivors of the initial blast. Humans had a similar idea to the emperor but toned down and made there little area. There travel might be a solution secretly made to avoid Warp or Webway travel due to the Flood. The Dark Eldar don’t go over there since they see the stars and go hell na. Now we have Halo

The Slaugth aka the Maggot Men were confirmed to have been sighted there by the Inquisition. In addition the Rangdan might also be hiding there as well. As for the Halo Devices it's theorized that both the Slaugth and the Rangdan might have some sort of connection to them.
As a relatively new BFGA player, i have noticed that there are fleets in the imperium intended to patrol the borders of halo stars. Just before seeing this video i have called one in to help halt an large chaos intrusion. After watching this video I think that those guys could stop invasion twice the size on their own.

After watching this video, the main halo star system, sounds like a great opportunity for GW to introduce the 40k equivalent of fantasy/age of sigmar's vampire counts.
Halo lore, specifically it's beginning, is similar with 40k when it comes to ancient beings creating sentient life to populate the galaxy. But in halo their names precursors and one of their children races (forerunners) killed most of them because they gave a totally legit title to man instead. Those who survived turned themselves into dust Wich the galaxy later snorts... But the dust was corrupted and became the flood Wich cults formed around it and thus it spread. Caused man and forerunners to fight with old man dieing out, the flood caused said fight because vengeance. The forerunners were getting punished so hard they had to build the giant onion rings you see today to kill themselves and repopulate the galaxy thus the flood starved, except those the forerunners kept alive because why not.

Idk bout black holes but it did have time cannons that overlayed eldar raiders onto themselves a fraction of a second in the past. Which was quite bad as you may imagine. The advanced ai also doesnt allow techpriests into certain areas
the speranza was a relic from the dark age with a dark age AI on board personally i do think that EVERY machine spirit is basicall jsut a limited copy of the Dark Age AI that probably sits in the vaults on mars as a precursor to them becoming machine worshiping metal men from jsut a maintenance and system ai in las and plasma guns up to full blown versions in things like titans and ships

@@treemover7259 machine spirit came to be because like modern day tech, it's full of bugs and glitches. Superstitious martian doctrine supports this. In 40k setting these techno-anomalies may be caused by their proximity to the void dragon.
Like shaking or smashing a remote can fix the signal. Or pressing the buttons on a game controller harder can make players falsely perceive that their actions will get better. There are some instances in 40k where machine spirits exist. A book re: man of iron said he met with the machine god back before they got beat.

@Major Kill I would like to thank you for being the Muse of my latest, Let's fix the Warp! theory. From a Tech Support stand point I am surprised I didn't think of this before. "Have you tried turning it off and then back on again?" You get a hold of the Eldar, tell them we're going to perform a small culling war on the Dark Eldar, in a dual front war attempt to kill she who thirsts, and in the "year" that we are doing this with the Eldar in the Webway, we put every human on every world into hibernation. With Relatively "all" the Eldar confined to the Webway, and all the human's down, Galactic Scale, No emotions = no Warp food. the only thing left are a "few" Astartes Chapters with orders to simply extermanatus anything actively predating us during this down-time, to keep the Tyranids and Orcs from taking advantage, and the Grey Knights, who enter the Eye of Terror and make sure everything there dies, or "molded" into something more usable. Then we bring worlds back "online" one by one, maintaining control of the Eye of Terror as we do so. This is how we do the Eldar thing, and Craft Warp Gods instead of letting our sub-conscious have all the fun.
Thank you very much for doing this video. I got into 40k in college, but never had the money to invest in it, so I got really into the lore, instead, and the gamer in me was immediately drawn into the Dark Heresy and Rogue Trader gaming lines, by FFG, where the Koronus Expanse is featured. I've been playing D&D for over 20 years, but my Rogue Trader character is still my most advanced, detailed character, at over 40 MS Word pages long of stats, exploits, kit, and crap. It's just a shame my RPing friends never got into the 40k IP, and wanted to play Rogue Trader. Anyway, it was a great deal of fun to hear about the outer edge of where human ambition can go, before it gets reminded that the galaxy is huge, and there are nightmares made manifest out there.

Please do more Calixis Sector lore related video. The setting of the Calixis sector is one of the richest and most detailed of the entire franchise but it got forgotten with the death of Dark Heresy, Rogue Trader and all the other RpG. There are planty of crazy things like the Tyrant Star, the legacy of the Haarlock RT family, an entire sub-sector of ancient roman empire Wannabe secessionist and an anti-inquisition faction leaded by a shady and probably nerdy Prospero survivor. Man that’s a lot of good shit...

Makes me wonder why the imperium doesnt keep a few dozen halo devices on key worlds. For about 5 years you have the perfect near invulnerable soldiers. Imagine if like a dozen of them had aided the imperium during the 13th black crusades.

Halo Device hosts can take a massive amount of punishment before they keel over and will eventually resurrect themselves from all but the most catastrophic damage, in some cases coming back from even that. Then there's the possibility that they'll go on the run. Even if they are aware of the side effects there's no telling if they'll retain enough of themselves to go through with being "retired", and with their memories being steadily overwritten, the urge to go rogue will likely be very persuasive. Long story short, it's impractically tricky for this plan to be put into action and plenty of things can go wrong. If or when they do, you'll have a bunch of hyper-intelligent, near-implacable immortals running around causing chaos and eating the citizenry. And even if you do manage to successfully wipe out the beasts, it'll kick up enough of a stink to get the Inquisition involved, and they don't like people fiddling around with Xenos tech so you can guess what they'll do.
The Rangda are from the Eastern part of the Galaxy and are believed to come from the Ghoul Stars (given the location of Advex-mors where they were first encountered), so not the Halo Stars region of the Halo Stars. So if they are still out there (big IF), they are in the Ghoul Stars...assuming the Dark Angels of the Order of the Broken Claws didn't finish the job during the Rangdan Xenocides. But I would add that most of those guys are from the Dreadwing and Firewing and they are extremely thorough when conducting extermination campaigns. The Halo stars are one of my favorite parts of 40K. I rank them from worst to go or live to best place in this order. 1. Ghoul Stars cause even the Nids and Necrons are messed up by it. 2. Halo stars cause it's still scary and dangerous just not as bad as the Ghoul stars. 3. Eastern Fringe due to the most powerful Necron Dynasties being their and could slaughter you with ease, and if they are not interested then you have to deal with the Tau trying to invade or subvert you. 4. The Veiled region as their is no massive power their minus a smaller Necron empire that is not as violent.

There needs to be more stories made regarding the Halo Stars (in general, not just the North-Western section). There’s a lot of fertile ground there for all manner of cool lore to be conceived, as well as potential threats to not just the Imperium, but the Galaxy at large. A lost human world now ruled by surviving Men of Iron... or maybe even Men of Stone?

7:36 honestly would be tempted to take the Halo Device, considering my pessimistic view of world i would put it on second i saw it and become a monster after five years. Also what if Halo Devices were actually made during Dark Age Of Technology or during what ever time to turn people into true Ghouls? I find the Halo Devices fascinating. And the description of one Halo Device in particular to be incredibly unsettling in a very interesting way. The Psycharus Worm is described as “Appearing like a tarnished brass maggot some six inches in length, the worm is cold and greasy to the touch”. That description just oozes menace and makes it seem so sinister.
My desire for humor wills me to subscribe. But my loyalty to Arch stays my hand. I know how they must of felt before the Heresy. To stay loyal to the Emperor or follow the charismatic Warmaster.
Also, the Rogue Trader rpg's setting is placed in the Halo Stars (Koronus Expanse). We played a campaign once there, and the players could only conquer 1 planet where the native population was a gullible star trek race who desperately seek out to befriend some aliens, and the rest of the Expanse is basically a hellhole compared to that system. But even that planet was infested with hordes of Wanamingos from Fallout, and had a webway gate leading to Commorragh, (those dope xenos build their greatest city around the gate) so you can imagine what the not-so-chilly parts of the Expanse looked like.

I’d like to think it’s where the old ones developed their most dangerous shit during the war in heaven, but never used them as they got wiped before they had a chance. Each planet was basically a science lab of sorts on a massive scale, which is why all of them are different, yet with some key similarities.

I managed it once through the luckiest rolls I've ever had. Deathwing terminators wiffed every attack and I managed to down exactly one of them. They then blew their morale check and got run down by fire warriors who probably were questioning the existence of a benevolent god!
Sounds like there could be a cool story where a person has to use a halo device for some reason, a good person using it for some reason knowing that they'll have to be killed but there's an immediate reason for it that makes it necessary.
And then, as they gradually become corrupted by it, they lose themselves to it and start to want to keep using it and keep living, even though they’re becoming a monster…

if you're writing a story it would be fleshed out a lot more depending on its length. But it doesn't sound like a bad idea that you could flesh out more.
Could easily be fleshed out as a story but since I don't play Necromunga I'm not sure how it would be built with the game mechanics. I have more experience writing settings for RPGs, as a Warhammer Crime story it would be an interesting one to write from the perspective of an Arbities as the disappearance of a lesser member of the spire families would be enough to justify an investigation as well as rewards for gangers to go hunting too.

Personal theory: the halo devices were weapons of last resort for whoever designed them, making their soldiers incredibly powerful. I say weapon of last resort because with the down side, they might not have expected their soldiers to live too long so who cares about down side twenty years from now?
I believe it was made as a way to force evolution amongst the species, and that it went horribly wrong when very late term side effects occurred. Hence why the civilization was wiped out.
My theory is that they are assimilation devices.
Designed to indoctrinate anyone foolish enough to use one with the habits, language and appearance of its creators, overwriting their sense of self and their genetic structure.

My favorite part about the Halo Stars is how it shows that we've only really scratched the surface when it comes to the 40k universe. The idea that there could be even greater threats than Chaos lurking within the universe is so hard to wrap your mind around and just goes to show that whenever the Imperium thinks they have things under control, they really don't, not in the slightest.
The idea of there being even greater threats is kind of silly though. The imperium and the other civilised xenos, which are what most narrative in 40k is based on, are already hopelessly outmatched. Throwing even more on top of it is redundant.

I mean Halo takes place in the 26th Century so one could argue that it took place in the distant past of the 40K Universe. As with taking place in the Halo stars thats more difficult since alot of stuff takes place on Earth. But you are right, amusing nonetheless
@@Guellap what if humans theoretically split off there and called it earth. The Halo stars can be a very large area and thus explains wider Halo. The Precursors are basically old ones and maybe in the distant past the Necrons and the Forunners were Allie’s but the eldar never fought them (maybe the orks did). Then the Forunners developed the Halo Rings but instead of destroying the galaxy they destroy the region. Basically the Lovecraftian horrors of the stars are supper evolved flood (a Old One creation) maybe due to it being so demonic the emperor can’t see it. Then the races of Halo are just survivors of the initial blast. Humans had a similar idea to the emperor but toned down and made there little area. There travel might be a solution secretly made to avoid Warp or Webway travel due to the Flood. The Dark Eldar don’t go over there since they see the stars and go hell na. Now we have Halo

The Slaugth aka the Maggot Men were confirmed to have been sighted there by the Inquisition. In addition the Rangdan might also be hiding there as well. As for the Halo Devices it's theorized that both the Slaugth and the Rangdan might have some sort of connection to them.
As a relatively new BFGA player, i have noticed that there are fleets in the imperium intended to patrol the borders of halo stars.
Just before seeing this video i have called one in to help halt an large chaos intrusion.
After watching this video I think that those guys could stop invasion twice the size on their own.

Halo lore, specifically it's beginning, is similar with 40k when it comes to ancient beings creating sentient life to populate the galaxy. But in halo their names precursors and one of their children races (forerunners) killed most of them because they gave a totally legit title to man instead. Those who survived turned themselves into dust Wich the galaxy later snorts...
But the dust was corrupted and became the flood Wich cults formed around it and thus it spread. Caused man and forerunners to fight with old man dieing out, the flood caused said fight because vengeance. The forerunners were getting punished so hard they had to build the giant onion rings you see today to kill themselves and repopulate the galaxy thus the flood starved, except those the forerunners kept alive because why not.

Idk bout black holes but it did have time cannons that overlayed eldar raiders onto themselves a fraction of a second in the past.

the speranza was a relic from the dark age with a dark age AI on board personally i do think that EVERY machine spirit is basicall jsut a limited copy of the Dark Age AI that probably sits in the vaults on mars as a precursor to them becoming machine worshiping metal men from jsut a maintenance and system ai in las and plasma guns up to full blown versions in things like titans and ships

@@treemover7259 machine spirit came to be because like modern day tech, it's full of bugs and glitches. Superstitious martian doctrine supports this. In 40k setting these techno-anomalies may be caused by their proximity to the void dragon.
Like shaking or smashing a remote can fix the signal. Or pressing the buttons on a game controller harder can make players falsely perceive that their actions will get better. There are some instances in 40k where machine spirits exist. A book re: man of iron said he met with the machine god back before they got beat.

You get a hold of the Eldar, tell them we're going to perform a small culling war on the Dark Eldar, in a dual front war attempt to kill she who thirsts, and in the "year" that we are doing this with the Eldar in the Webway, we put every human on every world into hibernation. With Relatively "all" the Eldar confined to the Webway, and all the human's down, Galactic Scale, No emotions = no Warp food. the only thing left are a "few" Astartes Chapters with orders to simply extermanatus anything actively predating us during this down-time, to keep the Tyranids and Orcs from taking advantage, and the Grey Knights, who enter the Eye of Terror and make sure everything there dies, or "molded" into something more usable. Then we bring worlds back "online" one by one, maintaining control of the Eye of Terror as we do so. This is how we do the Eldar thing, and Craft Warp Gods instead of letting our sub-conscious have all the fun.

Thank you very much for doing this video. I got into 40k in college, but never had the money to invest in it, so I got really into the lore, instead, and the gamer in me was immediately drawn into the Dark Heresy and Rogue Trader gaming lines, by FFG, where the Koronus Expanse is featured. I've been playing D&D for over 20 years, but my Rogue Trader character is still my most advanced, detailed character, at over 40 MS Word pages long of stats, exploits, kit, and crap. It's just a shame my RPing friends never got into the 40k IP, and wanted to play Rogue Trader.
Anyway, it was a great deal of fun to hear about the outer edge of where human ambition can go, before it gets reminded that the galaxy is huge, and there are nightmares made manifest out there.

The setting of the Calixis sector is one of the richest and most detailed of the entire franchise but it got forgotten with the death of Dark Heresy, Rogue Trader and all the other RpG.
There are planty of crazy things like the Tyrant Star, the legacy of the Haarlock RT family, an entire sub-sector of ancient roman empire Wannabe secessionist and an anti-inquisition faction leaded by a shady and probably nerdy Prospero survivor.

Makes me wonder why the imperium doesnt keep a few dozen halo devices on key worlds. For about 5 years you have the perfect near invulnerable soldiers. Imagine if like a dozen of them had aided the imperium during the 13th black crusades.

Halo Device hosts can take a massive amount of punishment before they keel over and will eventually resurrect themselves from all but the most catastrophic damage, in some cases coming back from even that. Then there's the possibility that they'll go on the run. Even if they are aware of the side effects there's no telling if they'll retain enough of themselves to go through with being "retired", and with their memories being steadily overwritten, the urge to go rogue will likely be very persuasive.
Long story short, it's impractically tricky for this plan to be put into action and plenty of things can go wrong. If or when they do, you'll have a bunch of hyper-intelligent, near-implacable immortals running around causing chaos and eating the citizenry. And even if you do manage to successfully wipe out the beasts, it'll kick up enough of a stink to get the Inquisition involved, and they don't like people fiddling around with Xenos tech so you can guess what they'll do.
Considering you cant even take a shit without it strengthening Chaos, it is awesome to see a horror that has nothing to do with Chaos for a change.
I'm not sure which chaos god gaining strength from you taking a shit would be the most uncomfortable to think about.

The Rangda are from the Eastern part of the Galaxy and are believed to come from the Ghoul Stars (given the location of Advex-mors where they were first encountered), so not the Halo Stars region of the Halo Stars. So if they are still out there (big IF), they are in the Ghoul Stars...assuming the Dark Angels of the Order of the Broken Claws didn't finish the job during the Rangdan Xenocides. But I would add that most of those guys are from the Dreadwing and Firewing and they are extremely thorough when conducting extermination campaigns.

The Halo stars are one of my favorite parts of 40K. I rank them from worst to go or live to best place in this order.
1. Ghoul Stars cause even the Nids and Necrons are messed up by it.
2. Halo stars cause it's still scary and dangerous just not as bad as the Ghoul stars.
3. Eastern Fringe due to the most powerful Necron Dynasties being their and could slaughter you with ease, and if they are not interested then you have to deal with the Tau trying to invade or subvert you.
4. The Veiled region as their is no massive power their minus a smaller Necron empire that is not as violent.

There needs to be more stories made regarding the Halo Stars (in general, not just the North-Western section). There’s a lot of fertile ground there for all manner of cool lore to be conceived, as well as potential threats to not just the Imperium, but the Galaxy at large. A lost human world now ruled by surviving Men of Iron... or maybe even Men of Stone?
Yeah, I'd love to see more stories regarding the Men of Iron/Gold. Or even some stuff regarding the Golden Age of Technology.

I find the Halo Devices fascinating. And the description of one Halo Device in particular to be incredibly unsettling in a very interesting way. The Psycharus Worm is described as “Appearing like a tarnished brass maggot some six inches in length, the worm is cold and greasy to the touch”. That description just oozes menace and makes it seem so sinister.
My desire for humor wills me to subscribe.

Also, the Rogue Trader rpg's setting is placed in the Halo Stars (Koronus Expanse).
We played a campaign once there, and the players could only conquer 1 planet where the native population was a gullible star trek race who desperately seek out to befriend some aliens, and the rest of the Expanse is basically a hellhole compared to that system.
But even that planet was infested with hordes of Wanamingos from Fallout, and had a webway gate leading to Commorragh, (those dope xenos build their greatest city around the gate) so you can imagine what the not-so-chilly parts of the Expanse looked like.
