Thank you so much for this video, I bought my batterie from battdepot for €60, bought some acetone (to remove the glue) from a local diy store for €3.50 and changed my battery using this video to guide me with 0 electronics experience. For anyone not sure about whether they can do this, if you follow the video step by step it’s very simple!!

Thank you for the tutorial. Just replaced my MB Pro 2017 13in battery with your guide. I got a $33 generic battery off ebay and it was the same battery in the video!!! It came with the necessary screwdrivers, plastic putty knife , and spudger. Total capacity after install and calibration was 4758mah. Perfect match for OEM battery. All i needed was a guitar pick and bottle of acetone. Placement of the battery board is important. If not centered correctly, the battery wont be detected. I learned a really good trick. IF you have a glass scraper (with razor blade) moistened in some acetone, it is amazing at getting rid of the old adhesive and saving you a ton of time. Plus it does no damage to the aluminum. Its now a permanent tool in my macbook disassembly kit! The 2017 MB Pro 13 battery is definitely easier to talk off than a 2015-2017 MB12in. That battery and adhesive was nuts!
How is the new battery performance, does it hold the charge well
Thanks to this video I was empowered to replace the battery in my 2017 MacBook pro. While not the easiest thing I've ever done, it wasn't that hard either. I had to pry open the back of my laptop using a screwdriver near the hinges. Once off, the rest was just common sense and a bit of patience. No doubt, I saved a lot of money.

We use Li-ion batteries in our medical diagnostic ultrasound equipment, specifically the 18650GA cell which is used in Teslas. The life cycle specifications for this and most other Li-ion batteries are: Charging from 100% to 0% these batteries have a life span of 500 cycles. When charging from 80% to 20% these batteries have a life span of 50,000 cycles. I've been working with medical equipment since 1972 and have seen the progression of battery technology going from: Ni-cad to NiMH and now Li-ion. Just and FYI to get the longest life from your computer batteries.

Same here, just today, but I must say there were some gray areas and leaps of faith - especially around the ribbon cables - removing the one from the old battery's chip entirely wasn't clear (I had to retrieve it, fortunately hadn't dropped the battery off at a disposal facility yet) and where/how they plug back in was also a guessing game. But I'm up and running!

I have the same model and the same issue. Apple would charge me around 400$ for this but I decided to replace it myself cuz I am into tech stuff. I’ll try and will let you know the result! Thank you for the video

Congrats! We peasant can do a 400$ job of Apple! What a scam. At least other hardwares are quite robust. Mine is still running as well (except the battery of course).
how has been the battery replacement after almost a year?
It would be useful to mention in this guide that the battery connector is its own part.
Using this guide I removed my battery a week before my new battery arrived, and knowing that my old battery was stuffed I threw it out (lesson learned for next time) along with the battery connector still attached as I didn’t know it was it’s own part. When my new battery arrived I started following your guide again only to realise that I didn’t have the battery connector part and have had to order a new one.
I am going to try this myself, wish me luck :)

Don't try this without the adhesive remover. I read some guides that said you don't need it. They're wrong. It really sucked.

How is battery back after replacing a new battery
My daughter got her MBP battery replaced at her college bookstore for $189, but I think I'll go this route for mine. However, with a bit more engineering (or perhaps a bit less), Apple could have made this process a ton easier.

Why? Making it easier would cause you to fix it instead of replacing it

@@callofduty2217 check out MacRumours. There's a large thread on upgrading the A1708 with a 2242 SSD. Currently got a 1TB Sabrent Rocket Nano in mine - and I fixed the sleep issues (not straight forward) 🎉

Is the replace battery massage still there ?
apple's $500 fix is basically total lower case replacement, i had this done during warranty, they replace everything the touchbar, trackpad, keyboard and battery, basically everything except for the screen and motherboard.
We have the same device, but why didn't you mention the glue that is placed on the bottom cover of the device?

Any other laptop would be even easier.. batteries should always be simple to replace. Requiring adhesive removal and trackpad removal is just anti-consumer. Its there to scare away the less savy - and it works. If your an apple customer your paying a premium to recieve this disrespect.
@@theagent578 I agree. I have a perfect condition Surface Pro 4 but the cost of replacing the battery is ridiculous so it will eventually end up being scrapped. There is no excuse for building batteries into a laptop or phone other than to force you to constantly upgrade.

Is it normal that my battery is at 2.2v under the screw ? I got 7.68v when I test the pin 1 and 5, 2 and 4 (With the 5 pin on the left of the battery control board). If you could test it or tell me if its good or not. Let me know !
Can you please make an update video after one year. I have been having issues to find a reliable battery for my early 2013 MacBook Pro in the past two years and so far paid $300 for the batteries from OWC and Denaq. They all last for a few months plus. The previous battery from OWC lasted for 4 month and started having the same issue you have demonstrated in this video. I did all sort of magic, factory resets and nothing helps! Cannot anybody in the US build a good battery in the era of Tesla etc????

After replacing the battery, does the macOS still say a warning for the battery?
You should mention that you have to pull/slide the lid at the rear towards front after pulling the front up

Hey it’s an app in the App Store but after upgrading to Big Sur from Catalina it no longer works. It was a notifications center only app, but if you haven’t installed Big Sur you should be fine

Still working great, but turned out that Apple started a replacement program for those batteries free of charge like the next week :( , due to a known fault. So I would just make sure your Mac isn't a part of any replacement program before replacing

With the new battery how long does it last on a full charge? I’m am thinking about doing this as well. Mine is still working good but I did buy it used and I feel like the battery doesn’t last as long as it should.
Lasts quite a bit, probably around 2-3hours for pretty rigorous programs, and 8-10 for video playback and web browsing

It was actually only available on older Mac OS versions, ever since release of apple silicon they have not made a new version to my knowledge

I have the 2017 MacBook Pro 13" with the touch bar at the top just below the screen. Is it the A1708? Or are there different 2017 models which use different batteries? Just want to be sure before starting what I saw you do on your video...
I think the whole process will be slightly different with the Touch Bar but I fixit makes a lot specific for the Touch Bar model

They don't have the kit, but they sell the items in the kit. Look at the fixit shop to make your own kit. www.ifixit.com/Store/Tools take look around you'll see all the items in the original kit.
Good vid, but there are so many bits and bobs in the laptop that I could hardly see or understand what specific parts you were referring to as I couldn’t see in the video, the camera was a bit too far away.

***FOR ANYONE USING MOBILE SENTRIX PARTS*** They Adhesive the cable that goes over the connector. carefully peel it back and it should reach over just fine. I fought with this connector for 15 minutes before realizing it wasnt attached it was just adhesived in place.
If the battery is swollen and we want to replace it at home as you did will it explode as it is swollen. Please advice in this issue. I am talking about my laptop.
Swollen batteries are definitely something I would leave in the hands of a professional

Every Mac will work plugged in regardless of if a battery is installed (Becca's Macs FB group been repairing Macs 10 years)

Yes, in order to get to all of the battery connections
Just for people to know, you do not need to remove all those screws as well as the track pad in other to take off the battery. Just a few specific ones and you're good to go.
Every vid I've seen shows the same basic process, where are you getting your information that only a few screws are needed? I could see the trackpad being excessive, other than you risk damaging it while prying the center battery section out if you don't remove it first.
You would literally be Insane to not take it out while trying to take out the middle battery.
Price of a trackpad 59€ , time used to remove 12 screws , 17 secs I still rather to remove them and not risk it 🤣
@@rupertwilmot4792 usually people take out the track pad, to put that adhesive remover soo it's easier too take out the battery. But I don't think it's necessary to take out the entire track pad tho, maybe 1-3 screws should be enough.
You can also try to use a blow dryer on the middle battery to make it easier to pry the middle battery up instead of using that liquid.
DO NOT DO THIS. I REPEAT- ALWAYS TAKE OFF THE TRACK PAD FIRST. It's not that hard, and if you don't, you'll break your trackpad electronics which are RIGHT underneath the middle battery. believe me, cause I ruined my macbook from following this.
I had the battery replaced on my MBP 2017 touchbar last week and for some reason when you look at the settings, my machine is still recognizing the details and capacity of the old battery that was removed (which was down to 2800mah and was all bloated when the technician showed it to me) and not the new one (4400mah). Other than that the battery cycle is now 3 and it’s normal, and it’s charging. Technician says it’s a bug on the OS, but I dunno. Paid $150 for the new battery.

@@mjl7810 no. it was a third party computer shop that did it. anyway, i ended up taking it to an authorized apple service center and paying another $150 for an original battery. not long after that, i sold the laptop. the lcd screen began showing lines and the same shop quoted me $300 to get the screen replaced. i said no way.
he wasnt lying, thats just how it is.. it keeps the info frm the last battery.. when apple replaces it tho, its a bit different.. but thats just apple for you.

Be careful when using adhesive removals or diluted isopropyl! Protect your screens with some cloth!!

I have 2 a1708 MacBook pro's, one is completely dead with a good oem battery, the other is working great but has a battery that has over 1350 cycles and is going bad. does anyone know if transplanting the battery from one a1708 to another if careful to damage the cell is a bad idea?
Ypu probably should transfer the good board into the case with the good battery, it's almost impossible to take the battery out without bending it
Transfering the board would also be *way* easier
I replaced my battery, but now my MacBook won't stay on unless it is connected to a charger. I am unsure if this is an issue with the battery I bought or if I messed up when replacing the battery. Any help would be awesome!
Did you find out what it was? I just replaced mine and it worked fine at first but now it won't even boot up, it turns off and it takes some time for it to be able to turn on again, even connected to the wall, if it is a bad battery I have less than 30 days to return it

Not at all, storage shouldn’t be effected
do you need to add the adhesive from the new batteries? why not gently peel it off so the next battery is easier to replace.
yes, it will move otherwise and possibly damage it or damage something else or pull the connections off.

Great video. I can definitely do this but I've got two systems in need of repair and I'm not sure I want to spend half a day fussing with keeping the screws in order, dealing with the toxic solvent and aligning the battery replacement. Talk me into or out of it.

you need to take out the motherboard then the battery because some battery cables are routed under the motherboard.
Not take out the logic board completely just remove the screws to lift it up slightly in the front.
Microcenter wants 400 for a battery replacement on a 15inch 2016 mbp. Is it worth it?
Nope you can buy a 2016 MacBook Pro for that price alone.
Inherited an a1708 recently with a bad battery. I've replaced the battery on numerous MacBooks in the past, but this one makes me nervous. Probably the glue strips and trackpad removal.
Apple's own website says it's $199 to replace the battery, it's crazy that people are being told $500 by Apple, something's not right with that. $150 for the iFixIt kit seems excessive, too. If I were inclined to go with the iFixIt price level, I think the extra $50 to have Apple do it and be responsible for any issues afterwards would be money well spent.
I know iFixIt is top notch parts there, but I've purchased much cheaper batteries on Amazon that worked fine in previous MacBooks. The a1708 battery is only $50 or so on Amazon as of 02/2022. Any DIYers should consider those options, although they don't include tools other than the two screwdrivers called for.

It's funny because the iFixit kit here in Australia is $249 and Apple charge $199 for a battery "service" - not sure if thats a replacement?
Use eBay not ifixix in Australia, mine cost $70 and I bought some adhesive remover from Coles for about $8

I got the same model as this and my battery wasn't charging at all. I was told by Apple store that it had died. The Apple store told me that I would need to replace the whole upper case, that I could not replace the battery. I thought that is complete bull crap because I am sure I could replace the battery. I had the same problem as your MacBook Pro. That battery warning came on and I could not charge it. I think apple was trying to just get money out of me by telling me that I needed to replace the whole upper case. Do you think Would need to do that or could I just repay the battery like you have. Because I had the same problem as you have with yours.
I know Apple recently started a free battery replacement program for the 2017 MacBook Pro so I would recheck with Apple if your Mac is eligible
Hi, I eliminated the mac and changed the accumulator. the old accumulator had blown itself up. Same mac and same accumulator (1708). this was not mechanically a problem. Unfortunately the mac drives up very slowly. the mouse pad and the keyboard do not work anymore, only still the BT Maus and keyboard work. The mac runs also super super slowly. The fan runs permanently. I explained the works very carefully. I installed the old accumulator again, unfortunately again that itself error situation. Have you an idea what I made wrong? BG Rudi

Weird enough my 2011 macbook pro did the same thing and i replaced everything inside it before even taking it to apple
That battery only lasted 1 day before it was just as bad as the other one, some software i used said the battery was bad and i couldnt return it
I think i got the kit from ifix it as well idk if it was the battery or their new os just draining it faster
Hopefully apply doesnt try to rip me off, if its good price ill do it, if not ill have to wait till later, thankfully i built a gaming pc so this is just for extra / casual work stuff now lol

Nearly 600 dollars to replace at apple store! Why?
The reason apple charges so much for their fixes is because they don't just do a replacement on the thing they're fixing. They usually replace other parts too. They do this because they're legally bound to warranty their work, which amounts to a whole new warranty on your machine for about a year. Which means after your fix is in place, if anything else happens, the will usually fix it at no cost. Because of this, they usually bring the machine up to factory refurb spec at least around the main work that they're doing.
It's also not just apple. Samsung does it too.
There should be nothing else that needs replaced if the battery is dead (or many other parts for that matter). If they do anything else it should be explained to the customer and verified that the customer wants it. Furthermore if it a part being replaced under warranty it should have no effect on the cost at all.

Annoying that small ribbon is not supplied with battery nor is there enough detail about how to transfer & refit this from the old battery. Had to watch another video to cover this.

The kit is simply too high... $149.99 for kit? I can just take it to Apple and having them replace it for $199 if you're don't have AppleCare and you'll get the warranty from them as well.
