  • Shababs Balti Restaurant, Birmingham Balti Triangle.

    A few clips of my visit to Shababs, talking about ther base gravy, cooking a naan, and chatting with Andy Munro about the history of Balti.
    The Birmingham Balti (BB) is a style of cooking that evolved in the 1970s and was massively popular in the 80's and 90's and has since maintained a large fan base. There's something special in the way an authentic BB is cooked - on a high flame in a thin and squat pressed steel bowl in which it is also served. Scoop it up with a naan and you're in Balti paradise.
    This video is part of series of videos I'm publishing about authentic Balti.

    I went to Shababs a few times and to be honest their food was really good. The one thing that interests me was the opening hours of the restaurant as they're open from 12pm to 5am on weekends and 3am on weekdays.

      They're good, but quite expensive. I remember buying a couple of Balti bowls from a shop in Ladypool road (very close to Shababs) for about £3 each. I tried to buy some more a few years ago and couldn't find any. I ended up paying about £20 for a "Birmingham Balti Bowl". I recently bought a couple of Balti bowls from a seller on eBay for under £20, and they're better than the Birmingham Balti Bowl in my opinion (slightly larger flat base, and not imprinted letters).

    Hi misty, I wonder if you could advise? I’ve been toying with a Baltic dish, but not sure why some advise to buy cast iron, but this video thin steel is best? Why would they make cast iron balti pans if they are not best?
    Thanks again mate 🥂

    • @MistyRicardo
      @MistyRicardo  Рік тому +1

      Thin pressed steel for speed of cooking and smoky flavour, suitable and ideal for balti restaurants.

      The Shababs Balti bowls are slightly different from the Birmgingham Balti Bowl Company ones. Both very good. I think you'd need to look at Shababs website to see how to get the former.
