With Patch 1.2, I would officially consider this one out of date. Most of it will still work but a lot of changes were made to psykers. Will eventually make a sort of updated build likely around Oct/Nov 2024.
Thank you! I bought the game during the Steam sale and would really like to play a cool melee build. But with all the changes from the big patch, the information I've seen so far are outdated and extra confusing for me as a newcomer to this game. So yes, an updated video on the build is highly appreciated.
I too picked up the game during the steam sale. I really enjoyed WOTR by Owlcat. I understand DnD rulesets which made WOTR much easier to understand (the rulesets and how feats work, etc). I've made it past the prologue on 2 characters but realize that I understand so little of the systems, that I am looking for a guide. I'm looking forward to when you can update this for 1.2.
Arbitrator Solomon Vhyr´s Armor now comes from the lvl 5 project "Holy Defenders" on Foulstone in Act 4. The armor is still the same and works exactly as advertised, just cant get it before Act 4 now. The Sword is obtained from the Drusians at reputation lvl 19, which also requires Act 4.
@@kitkamiThe general idea is still good, you just get "the good stuff" later. There is a Psi specific 1h sword in act 2 behind a puzzle somewhere on the right side of the starmap you can use untill then, or just use the best 2h you have access to. Dont remember the system name, but its the one with grey ruins and a beam puzzle, one of the 2 rewards is the psi sword. If you can get your Psi rating above 4 the 1h Psi sword is arguably better.
Helm isn't bugged, the text is a bit unclear. You get +1 psy rating per dogmatic rank and +1 vs. demons. Or in other words, you get +4 for 4 ranks dogmatic. If you fight vs. demons, you get an additional +1
Really appreciate the stuff you put out. I feel like I only play such niche or old games and it is awesome to have you creating content in that space. Hope you have a wonderful holiday season with the loved ones.
If you respec after level 10, you can get psi rating increase before 10. It's because you are already past the level and are redoing her levels that you can do it at level 7.
So playing your build and it's awesome. I just have to say Death Whisper is really powerful as it resets everytime you gain control of that character. Which means you can have Cassia cast Move Move Move which switches control to the target character who can then move. However, death whisper is useable during this movement. Then when it reverts back to Cassia, she can cast Bring It Down to give the character 2 AP. When this is cast, it once again passes control to the target character that can not only attack via the 2 AP, but it also resets Death Whisper so you can use it again! So every turn, as long as Cassia is in range, you can use that ability a minimum of 3 times. It adds up
I did this with my sniper yrliet, she would solo rooms and bosses easily. End of act 5 I could easily have her doing 3k+ per shot with 300+ direct dmg as well.
I started the game as a pyromancer / soldier, with the goal to be a traditionnal wizzard, but it was really bad so I used toybox to respec into a warrior. I have to say it's really strong so far, since I went pyromancer before biomancy so I chose the ability that make melee attack deal fire damage to opponent and it slap. Me and Abelard are cuting everyone in one or two hits on daring, really cool build.
Something worth mentioning, Owlcat has apparently played musical chairs with everything but the helmet you mentioned in the gear section. The armor and the sword no longer appear to be in Act 2 at all.
Exactly - if this build is very gear dependent, then it really only comes together in Act 4+, as the sword and armour you mention are only available as late-game colony projects.
Very nice. I hope they don't nerf all of this. Game developers often seem to forget that power fantasy is half the fun in a lot of these single player games, and doesn't necessarily need to be balanced into oblivion. Games that balance everything *too much*, to the point where options are pretty much different in name only, aren't fun.
You're reading the Eyes of Joyeuse wrong. You gain +1 PR against demons AND an additional bonus PR equal to your ranks in Dogmatic at all times. So it's not bugged, it's just great.
I like the idea of playing this build as Fortress World. In theory Never Stop Shooting should work with psyker attacks, and they have a talent to regain stacks of NSS based on Willpower.
Alright alright, I understand its easy to get carried away with drawing lines, but im just saying. Speaking of psykers, Heinrix looks pretty similar to known WH40K mega nerd, Henry cavill. The name is also pretty close too. Just saying
This will be great for the Henrix. I just started my release play through and haven’t unlocked him yet, but this seems like a great way to set him up. Thanks!
Man this video is perfect, I'm new to these style games and I had no idea if making a librarian was possible and was debating starting over thinking I had messed up. Cheers mate!
Just bought on steam, looking forward to the update in August. Hope it works until then and respec can cover what doesn’t. Thanks for the hard work. Follow you for wotr and bg3. Good man.
I've been playing about ten hours or so, and my melee build is suffering from lack of direction. Your build is just like what I want, so I will try it out. Appreciate all your content, and am looking forward to other build guides.
I was finding what happened with levelling up quite confusing with no tooltip information providing the variables I needed to know. This helped, thanks Mortym.
Is there a chance you can do a written build guide for this? Even if it only says what passives/etc. to take at what level I think it would be hugely helpful. I really want to try this build.
NOOOOO, not decimate 😢 you DO NOT want to decimate your opponents. You will absolutely lose if that's all you do. Aside from my vocabulary criticism, this is a sweet build and once I buy the game, I'll 100% be rocking this out. Thank you 🎉
Im following you since 2k subscribes or 5k? I dont remember now. I loved your lore videos on godlikes from Pillars of Eternity and your and your approach on interesing builds. I wanted to play meele psycker but i didnt know if it was possible ( dont know 40k very well ). Time to buy a game! And im so glad your channel has grown so much !
They do seem to have patched the Psy at 7 thing. The good news is that the skills at level 10 and 20 where psy rating is supposed are both obtainable where the psy ratings are in your guide so just a quick switch between them and you are all good.
I am doing aomefhing similar but start with death world (better stats if you only want to use self buffs IMO) and don’t put anything into willpower and just take the self buffs from the bio and pyro, which don’t scale off of willpower. I am also going to see how dual wielding is. I get the impression is isn’t that great, but it will depend on what endgame weapons you get maybe. I am going to try daggers. Hopefully there are some decent ones with unique traits. Also I am going light armor and cranking agility and weapon proficiency, with some points to strength. Light armor synergizes with assassin better than heavy, IMO.
I'm pretty much doing this, more agi based, light armor, self buffing, I have 100% dodge at level 14. Killing it on hard mode. I think I will try upping willpower later when I get access to force weapons though, and who knows, if run across cool heavy armor/power armor I might respec.
Thanks for the video. This is WH40k, so they're all murder hobos, but I think to murder hobo proper, requires melee. Onward to 300k. All glory to the algorithm.
@@NefariousKoelYeah with warp feckery I can't imagine going full caster. Unless you want to summon daemons or explode. Tis why I think if I ever play as psyker it's going to be officer or, dunno a soldier. Honestly I have no idea how to build it to not be standing and doing nothing for a couple of turns just to not explode by a mistake ;d
On the pyromancer side I can recomend a heavy stubber, as it synergizes well with the armor shred and crit stacking talents (solider/millitant for extra action economy). On the melee side I recon that a force weapon with the blades of light talent should be in there somehow. The fenix power also sounds good on paper, along with the other talent that encureges you to be on fire. But on the other hand, the Righteus Justice sword might just be too good for stuff like that to matter.
I did something similar but went dual wielding sword and gun with arch militant. Going for free cast iron arm first turn and the boots that reduces charge ap cost by one. Only lvl 18 but im running light armor with high agility and thoughness. Works great and lots of attacks per round already. You want the forewarning buff and upgrade however, so get a companion with that.
Thanks for guide. I myself want heretical psyker run and maybe will try lighter armor without needing 45 for str, I want to put some points into Fellowship and be charming leader too.
I'm running this combination...but went Agility instead of Strength. So far, it still wrecks. But I may respec this later. Also, cannot pick Psy Rating 1 until Lvl 12 now. It is locked until AFTER level 10. It meets prereq after you've leveled 10th level. And then you have a characteristic upgrade at level 11, so no talent is available. Making lvl 12 the earliest you can take Psy1.
The Adeptus-Arbites construction-project that rewarded the armor on the pre-release version of the game now yields an entirely different item. So I have to ask, has anyone acually manged to get the armour in the final version?
I'm new to the WH40k universe and I have no idea what I'm doing, but I picked up a pyromancer and I hope to do a Kael Thas range kind of build. If that won't work then I'll get this build going asuming you can respec in this game 😊
there is a respec, but you can only "refund" all the talents/feats/abilities you picked, you can't change your archetype or origin etc. very weird design choice overall
How did you manage to complete the game? Acts 4 and 5 are a mess and i feel like you kind of glossed over it. I guess it's better than the last two releases so you may be used to it. Are you trying to 100 percent it now or wait for a patch?
I didn't gloss over it, I actually said bugs were one of the main things holding it back, as for the how like I said in the review I didn't run into anything game breaking just a lot of annoyances. I am trying to 100% now, I think two achievements might be completely bugged though, but for what its worth I have encountered more serious bugs like talents and abilities not working properly in subsequent playthroughs which will all be included in the 100% review.
Awesome build :D The one build I'm playing with for Heinrik was Biomancer to Sanctic. The idea is to go Force sword build and using the Psalms of Heroes + Edge of Dawn to help with the damage. Not sure if it'll work :D
about the Coercion Heavy Armour "Arbitrator Solomon Vhyr's Armour"... in Pre-Release Version - Dargonus Colony-Colonymanagement, Phase III - ADEPTUS ARBITES in Release Version is the item "Boots of Victory" I have not found the armour, not yet.
Build is nice.. but you really missed on how to use the pyro stuff. Start forge world and take the fire buffs and resistances. Cast ingnite on yourself when you are surrounded.. the fire hits them all. Then use orchestrate flame to keep the burn going (you also cant prone in heavy armor). Then as you aggro more start throwing firestorms on your self. Its insane
For this, would you recommend - I'm using Forge World - the crit chance trait or the armour one? I'm leaning towards armour because I'll be able to get decent toughness and likely not decent intelligence, right? Even though I want to because I wanna use that trait that lets me use INT for speeches. Also, would this work with an arch-militant over an assassin? We're in heavy armour and the arch militant gets a bunch of free attacks.
I normally dont feel super lost in character development in these games. I guess its because im so unfamiliar with Warhammer and the amount of choices allowed that has me 2nd and 3rd guessing every choice i make. I look forward to future character build guides to help make some of the tough choices.
Yeah, same here. Its not necessairly amount of choices but also some things werent clear for me when i started. i keep second guessing my soldier-pyromancer but i guess ill just roll with fire theme and maybe pick flamer xd
Just use whatever deals the most damage until you find it then, problem solved. Thing was insane in act 2 anyway. Wouldnt be surprised if they just moved it to Act 4 or something.
@@MortismalGaming I agree. I noticed it was missing in my playthrough and several of my viewers have pinged me about it missing already. I’m sure I won’t be the only one for you :p
@@NarutoIIPrayer You can get the Ancient Force Sword from a puzzle on a planet in the Latotians Passage star system. Its 1-handed and deals extra damage based on Psy rating. As far as I know its the best weapon for a melee Psyker if you put a talent point into Blade of Light, and you can get it as early as the start of Act 2 (though the star system is east and a bit south from Dargonus, so its not exactly the first system you find). Psy rating does seem to be keeping it on par with other weapons, and there is a talent in Sanctic that lets you increase Psy rating every time someone uses a heroic untill end of combat, which keeps ramping up the damage even if you dont plan on taking more sanctic talents and abilities.
You can also blaze yourself to gain +1 psyker lvl with perk, and then make blaze permoment. Also cant find this sword. Maybe they remove it on a release version...
2 Things Mort #1 I'm glad this game was only 49.99 I was shocked to see that #2 I'm going psyker/soldier I'm not gonna watch this build yet nor have I seen any story or game play this time I want to go into this blind gonna see how build stacks up to yours after till then have fun guys ✌️
Using orchestrate on yourself when you are on fire allows you to deal ridiculous damage to the enemy. I'm pretty sure it's bugged because the fire damage is dealt twice for some reason. As a pyromancer you can pretty much reduce the fire damage to yourself to zero anyways so there's pretty much no drawback other than the setup.
Could this work well with the Halo Device if you knock down Willpower? Been looking for an excuse to put that on and a heretic version of this build could be verrrrrrrry interesting.
Liking it more & more the longer I play. Although getting acquainted with the level-ups, character builds, and all the mechanical details in the many ability tool-tips might seem daunting to the new player, it's hitting a sweet spot for me. The character customization options are a joy, more so than all the D&D/D20 based systems which normally get so much attention. All that wouldn't matter if the combat was meh, but that's not the case. Making tough decisions about what, who, where, and in what order - on every character's turn - has been very engaging. Also rather slow going for awhile due to having to re-read all those character ability tool-tips. You start getting them memorized after using them for awhile, but you'll still have to ponder how to implement them each turn so it's worth it. Diggin' it, Big +
In the future can I ask we get builds that are "play this as you level up and you dont need certain items to make it good" builds you skip over a lot of perk choice that I have to guess over, Im wondering why certain abilities deal 0-4 damage ect
i'd love to watch but maybe I should finish my first run before i do. looks like potential spoilers. really I just need to research how building a psyker is supposed to work. it isnt clear to me so far where psi rating comes from
Question for anyone who knows, does Athletics actually have an impact in combat? Haven’t seen any “difficult terrain” yet aside from out of combat skill checks.
Thanks for this build, there's almost good guides for this game out.. Would be pretty nice with better guides because there's a lot of talents and abilities to go through and help is appreciated
Not sure if anyone will answer seeing as its been so long but do you have to do Dogmatic. I get it boosts fire damage a little but would it break my build if i did not go that path? I have trouble playing evil characters and religious evils still evil.
In my game i cannot take psi rating 1 before level 10, so i guess it's a bug. Appart from that, wouldn't it be good to take forge world for the extra armor and bonus while wearing heavy armor feat?
I'm actually surprised not to see a force weapon with a psyker build. Are they just not good? Also it'd be nice to see in this guide alternatives for non-specific path builds (as the roleplay implications).
When building a character how many characteristics should you focus on? Im not sure how many points you get through out the game and whether it's better to max a few or get several high
Focus them on two or three characteristics, mainly to crank your abilities' outputs. Remember that pumping up their tens digit is what gives increased effects on a lot of your abilities. So check your special abilities' tool-tips and note the characteristic listed in their equations. BS for Ballistic Skill, TGH for Toughness, etc. Crank those until you can't (hit a gated level cap) then continue raising them later when the slot unlocks again.
In general, if you are picking up Psyker, you should strongly consider either dogmatic or heretical conviction. Iconoclast currently provides nothing that could compete with those two in terms of item rewards or items that are restricted to particular conviction. Also many of psyker gear is currently bugged, either not working properly or not working at all, so probably wait or do your first walkthrough with some other class.
How much worse would this be if I went heretic instead of dogmatic? I know we lose some fire damage, the sword and the helm, but does going heretic provide any unique items that we could substitute? To me, this sounded like the best way to play an evil bastard with the poison and fire and whatnot, kind of disappointed you have to be a good guy.
The power sword does seem really great, but personally, being a Psyker, and not using a Force sword just feels wrong to me xD Currently doing a sanctic specific melee psyker build, based on resolve stacking and blade of light / faith. No need for willpower, or strength, as sanctic is purely psy rating and resolve. However, i just started, and still not sure on the best archetypes for this type of Psyker (sanctic) focused build
By Lore, Force Weapons are so rare that only Primarchs and some Grey Knights get them. They should also be around 100 dmg at min, not 10 dmg like in this game. When you can slice tanks in half by accident, you don't do that with 10 dmg like a lasgun.
Wish owlcat would stop putting recommended perks, the juiciest are from the second half. For example my Pasqual has all protocols now and dodge against him simple doesn't exist and all his analyses and machine spirits are distributed through his attacks (buffs still need be done as separate action)

I am trying to 100% now, I think two achievements might be completely bugged though, but for what its worth I have encountered more serious bugs like talents and abilities not working properly in subsequent playthroughs which will all be included in the 100% review.
Haha that biomancer you used for the thumbnail is the same portrait I grabbed and converted for my biomancer character.
Awesome build :D The one build I'm playing with for Heinrik was Biomancer to Sanctic. The idea is to go Force sword build and using the Psalms of Heroes + Edge of Dawn to help with the damage. Not sure if it'll work :D
I thought about that too, but it seems like Sanctic may not fit as well since it likes to use resolve instead of will power. I could be wrong.
about the Coercion Heavy Armour "Arbitrator Solomon Vhyr's Armour"...
in Pre-Release Version - Dargonus Colony-Colonymanagement, Phase III - ADEPTUS ARBITES
in Release Version is the item "Boots of Victory"
I have not found the armour, not yet.
Why biomancer instead of sanctic? I thought the warp melee weapon you can use to buff a force weapon would go well no?
really good guide. I was planning on a melee psyker build after your last vid but decided to go the flamer/pyromancy build. fire is just way too good
Build is nice.. but you really missed on how to use the pyro stuff. Start forge world and take the fire buffs and resistances. Cast ingnite on yourself when you are surrounded.. the fire hits them all. Then use orchestrate flame to keep the burn going (you also cant prone in heavy armor). Then as you aggro more start throwing firestorms on your self.
Its insane
Well as the pinned comment would have told you, this is outdated now because they recently overhauled several mechanics.
We're in heavy armour and the arch militant gets a bunch of free attacks.
yeah i really like this build
I think you're reading joyeuse eyes wrong. The word AND there changes the definition - you get +1 against demons AND more for each rank of dogmatic.
I normally dont feel super lost in character development in these games. I guess its because im so unfamiliar with Warhammer and the amount of choices allowed that has me 2nd and 3rd guessing every choice i make.
I look forward to future character build guides to help make some of the tough choices.
it’s pretty simple.
burn the heretic
kill the mutant
purge the unclean
all xenos are unclean
the emperor protects
u got this
Yeah, same here. Its not necessairly amount of choices but also some things werent clear for me when i started. i keep second guessing my soldier-pyromancer but i guess ill just roll with fire theme and maybe pick flamer xd
Not trying to poke holes; but they changed the location of that 2h sword. You can’t get it from the colony in the early act 2 anymore.
Awesome, thanks!
I'm trying to make myself in Rogue Trader maybe this is my best bet
Hi Mortismal. do you think Rogue trader is an easy game to play for a new comer for the genre, compared to Pathfinder?
Compared to Pathfinder yeah, though Id but it in the intermediate group for newcomers to the genre. Not the easiest but definitely workable
So about Foulstone, what choices do I have to make for the sword? I did the dogmatic option and I dont see the weapon anywhere
Its been moved in the release version. Reputation lvl 19 with Drussians, you need to be in Act 4
@@Dartanis Ouch, feels bad. I wonder what other kind of melee weapon would be good for a melee psycher
@@Dartanis Oh really? Gonna go and see if I can get it, thanks a lot mate! :)
You can also blaze yourself to gain +1 psyker lvl with perk, and then make blaze permoment. Also cant find this sword. Maybe they remove it on a release version...
What is the difference between heavy armour and power armour? both need 45 strength to unlock, what should i get?
without spoilers i only found one power armor in the entire game
2 Things Mort
#1 I'm glad this game was only 49.99 I was shocked to see that
#2 I'm going psyker/soldier I'm not gonna watch this build yet nor have I seen any story or game play this time I want to go into this blind gonna see how build stacks up to yours after till then have fun guys ✌️
I'm running a Santic Psyker Soldier.
The Emperor approves this (kinda)!
I most likely will use this build, since I wanted to be a biomancer anyway.
Could this work well with the Halo Device if you knock down Willpower? Been looking for an excuse to put that on and a heretic version of this build could be verrrrrrrry interesting.
Guys what do you think of the game so far? Your sincere opinions, I'll share mine in a bit, too!
I am liking it very much . but I am finding the level up process a bit opaque
Diggin' it, Big +
really great so far. the mechanics are a bit weird and I wish there was more voice acting but overall it's been great
In the future can I ask we get builds that are "play this as you level up and you dont need certain items to make it good" builds you skip over a lot of perk choice that I have to guess over, Im wondering why certain abilities deal 0-4 damage ect
i'd love to watch but maybe I should finish my first run before i do. looks like potential spoilers. really I just need to research how building a psyker is supposed to work. it isnt clear to me so far where psi rating comes from
Thanks!
and thank you!
Question for anyone who knows, does Athletics actually have an impact in combat? Haven’t seen any “difficult terrain” yet aside from out of combat skill checks.
This build looks so exciting to play! Are you planning to do more build guide videos?
Not currently
I'm trying a similar build but with the buff psyker path, the one that gives you the sword of the emperor summoned sword
Btw i think the leveling process is quite bugged as i couldnt take psy level before lvl 12 on any of my psykers but I could take a 3rd specialization
Yep I'm here for all the pyker builds lol
So where do you get the sword now that its removed from colony rewards?
Reputation lvl 19 with Drussians, you need to be in Act 4
@@Dartanis and do you know where the armor is? Is it also reputation locked?
@@ianwelk2878 Foulstone, Act 4, Tier 5 colony project
Was anyone able to find the sword or armor? I checked and they didnt appear for me in what's mentioned in the video...
Both are found in Act 4 now, sword is from Reputation Level 19 with Drusians. Armor comes from Foulstone Tier 5 colony project
cant skill psy rating +1 on lvl 7 its locked to lvl 10 what shoud i pick on lvl 6 oO
Theres just not a lot of them
How many companions do you get to roll around with? Great build!
party size is 6
Dual wield pistol build please!
Wait, why can you get Psy rating 1 at lvl 7? Is that different for every Psyker-Type? I did chose pyromancy and i can't get Psy rating 1 until lvl 10.
His using a older youtuber build, release build psy rating is every 10 levels. Most pysker builds up now are wrong
@@davidmango3286 That makes sense. But i expected something like that.
All these powers that work per hit makes me wonder if it wouldn't be great to go ballistics with an auto gun.
So how do upgrade willpower? It's not available from Warrior or Assassin? Do you just wait until Exemplar or get it from gear?
It's available if you're a psyker
Good show sir
“Mort, pull yourself together!”
3 at most, you wont be able to raise more than that effectively
It would be okay especially just on normal, but it would definitely be worse
Waiting
The power sword does seem really great, but personally, being a Psyker, and not using a Force sword just feels wrong to me xD
Currently doing a sanctic specific melee psyker build, based on resolve stacking and blade of light / faith.
Can we make build requests? I would love a pyro psyker with soldier archetype
I think Arbitrator Solomon Vhyr's Armour has been removed at least from chapter II
So this is pretty much the melee oracle angel build of Rogue Trader?
Well, you sold me on this build, time to restart the game. 😅
When you say "guaranteed dogmatic playthrough" is that just what you were doing or is this build somehow worse with iconoclast / heresy?
Dogmatic gives boosts to fire damage. That should answer your question. Not to mention that the preferred items require dogmatic.
@@Runenschuppe Thanks m8
I was able to get the helmet before the end of act 2. IDK if that was the intention.
