Sugar Ray fought up to a Hundred bouts before he got his shot at the world welterweight title ,There was also only one world Boxing governing body and eight weights .unlike today where you have almost eight champions at one weight ,Jake LaMotta and Sugar Ray fought when the game was much tougher .If any Boxer today fought a Hundred bouts it would be classed as an extraordinary record. Ray was without doubt the best pound for pound Boxer of all time.
But you must consider the fact that most bouts were open sparrings for public entertainment, they literally had them once a week, just you know different times, but Sugar Ray Robinson's boxing seemed from the future.

You cannot truly compare Sugar Ray Robinson to Sugar Ray Leonard or Floyd Mayweather. The difference in time is too great, the training regimes different, the diets, the whole complete life styles are different beyond comparison. What you can say when considering greatness is that Sugar Ray Robinson fought anyone and everyone. He never ducked another fighter or had them analysed before deciding to fight them. Nor did his back up team assess whether the opponent was 1) past their best, so now safe. 2) A big name who was actually vastly over rated. 3) Had other major distractions be they camp problems, hand problems, marital problems, drink or drug problems whatever. Floyd's camp do do that in a big way. No match with anyone dangerous is made while they are still at their best. In Robinson's case that never happened. He met everyone. Given that Robinson was not physically a big Middleweight he naturally had some problems facing Joey Maxim who was a big Light-Heavyweight fighting Heavyweights regularly and a skilful boxer. That said I do believe that under normal circumstances Ray would have out pointed Joey. The situation was what it was and the result stands. One other thing. You often hear guys say they beat Sugar Ray Robinson, but the only one's who did were Jake LaMotta, Randolph Turpin & circumstances allowing, Joey Maxim. After them it was a case of some good and pretty poor fighters beating an old worn out fighter. Terry Downes once replied to a question by saying. "I beat an old fighter named Ray Robinson. I never beat Sugar Ray Robinson. I wouldn't have lived with Sugar Ray Robinson." Shame some of the others were not so honest.

After the death of Jimmy Doyle, spoken about by Robinson at 7:55, Robinson was heartbroken and tried to make amends. He donated the money from his next 4 fights to Jimmy Doyle's mother, fulfilling Doyle's wishes. Robinson wasn't just the greatest pfp fighter, he was a deeply humble, kind man.
Such a tragic story... they should listen to his premonition.

Comparing mayweathers record to Robinsons doesn't do robinson justice, back then they didn't hand pick fights to maximise profits and guarantee a win for themselves, the best fought the best because they wanted to know who was the best, which is why SRR's wins in my opinion carry more weight

That farewell curtain call was the most elegant gentlemanly thing I have ever seen in a boxing ring. That man had a rare talent everyone knows the legend, but he had true class too.

Great champions never make an excuse for his defeat. He proves his greatness by just coming back.
Robinson is the God of boxing but if you read his autobiography, he made plenty of excuses for his defeats.

In his autobiography, Robinson did make excuses for his losses to La Motta, Turpin and Fullmer which contradicts the original post in this thread.

For those people who saying Robinson is fighting only or padding his record with bums, this is a Robinson career trivia for you:
In his first 20 fights Sugar Ray Robinson beat Jimmy Tygh who is good enough to beat Carl Guggino, Leo Rodak and Hall of Famer Benny Bass, and another top rated lightweight Pete Lello.
In only 2 years and 40 fights, he already beat 4 individual Hall of Famers: IBHOF inductees Sammy Anggott, Fritzie Zivic and Jake LaMotta and WBHOF inductee Marty Servo. Not to mention those elite level fighters like Izzy Jannazo, Carl Guggino, Maxie Berger, Maxie Shapiro, Tony Motisi, Norman Rubio, Rueben Shanks and so on.
In 1943, he fought Jake LaMotta twice in 14 days period sandwiched a fight with top welterweight contender California Jackie Wilson. Wilson is a very, very good boxer who actually had wins over Hall of Famers Jake LaMotta and Kid Gavilan in their primes.
In 1943 again in just over a month, he fought two rated welterweights Henry Armstrong and Ralph Zanelli.
From January 10 to February 23 of 1945, he fought welterweight contenders Tommy Bell and George Sugar Costner and middleweight great Jake LaMotta in just over a month period.
In 1949, just over month he beat Kid Gavilan and Steve Belloise.
Fast Forward to 1950, he beat Luc Van Dam,
Jean Walzack, Robert Villemain and Hans Stretz in just 16 days period from December 9 to 25. These are Middleweight elites especially Villemain who holds a world title during that time.
And from September 1951 to June 1952, he fought 4 individual Hall of Famers Randy Turpin, Bobo Olson, Rocky Graziano and Joey Maxim in just 9 months period. He actually beat Bobo Olson and Rocky Graziano in just over a month period.
Now if these guy Robinson is only fighting bums like you wanted to portray then perhaps I would rather have a man who fight these kind of 'BUMS.'

5 time middleweight champion and had some ATG competition. Definitely the best ever to do it, and his winning streak after losing to LaMotta, that'll never happen again.

Joe Louis said Sugar Ray was the best pound for pound. He could knock one out with either hand and could kayo with a left hook while going backwards. While it's true SRR and Joe were friends, I think Joe had it right.

I think Boxers train harder than they did back during Sugar Ray Robinson's time.... but Boxers had bigger hearts back then and they were a lot more sportsman like win, lose, or draw.
NOOO they definitely trained harder in those days! they had to train to make it through 15 rounds of brutal punishment. The fighting conditions were alot less restrained and the gloves were ALOT less padded than they are now. But ure absolutely right about the hearts and sportsmanship. I think it makes the fight more awe inspiring to see the 2 fighter embrace each other before they go to war.

Fast food wasn't as it is today, preservatives in foods was practically non-existent, training methods were extreme, but nowadays it's called "core training" lol. Maybe lots of fighters during the depression weren't as skilled due to lack of great trainers to go around, although the greats were just that, GREATS. Hank Armstrong, SRR, Joe Louis, Mickey Walker, Willie Pep, etc., etc. All these champions would mop the floor with all except the most gifted champions of the last 40 years and even then wouldn't lose too often. The toll all those bouts took on these heroes of the past, yet look at Jake LaMotta, nearly 93 years old and still in good health after 100+ pro bout career(and considering the punishment he took due to his style) is amazing. Too much money in today's fight game(at least for a champion). Fighters of yore(even champions) had to fight repeatedly each year just to maintain the lifestyle they felt they deserved to live. When Pretty Boy Floyd earns(after PPV rights) $42+ million for ONE fight, makes it hard to get motivated for your next match.

Ezzard Charles defeated Archie Moore 3 times, Walcott twice, Louis, Burley twice, Maxim (who outlasted SRR) 4 times,
Chris Rembert You know as well as I do Maxim didn't "outlast" SRR. In fact if that bout had been held under normal conditions Ray likely at least TKOs if not KOs Maxim by the 10th rd. He was way ahead as it was going to the 13th. Charles couldn't hit and in those 4 Maxim bouts didn't KO him. Charles, Moore, Walcott, Patterson and Lesnevich didn't KO Maxim in 12 total bouts. Maxim was only KOd once and rest assured under normal conditions vs SRR would have been number TWO in ONE try. How do I know that? Bobo Olson floored Maxim twice in a bout, a year before Olson was KOd in back to back bouts by SRR. Sugar Ray's versatility is what separates him from everybody else. No one else had the combination of both superior punching AND punch taking & avoiding for so long as he did. Remember without punching there is no boxing. We could go on for decades going back and forth because obviously we have different values in terms of top level boxing.

Everyone might think Robinson would probably KO Hearns because of his suspect chin, but Sugar Ray was dropped by power punchers during his career as well and I doubt any of the guys Robinson faced had the speed and power of the Hit Man. I would think Hearns could probably stop Robinson early but if he got caught by any of the bombs Robinson threw from either hand, it would be like the Hagler fight...bu..bye Tommy!

Joe Louis was Ray Robinson's idol- and Ray was Ali's idol. That says it all. They are boxing's Trinity. Ali is often referred to as a heavyweight Sugar Ray. But Ali was a better defensive fighter than Ray, and Ray was a better puncher than Ali- by far. One thing though- Ali's knockout of Bonavena looks a lot like Ray's kayo of Gene Fullmer.

all of mayweathers supposedly otherworldly techniques and skills were commonplace back in this era, even amongst white fighters. James Toney learnt all of his stuff watching videos of Archie Moore, Ezzard Charles, Ray Robinson, Jersey Joe Walcott, etc. watch bobo Olson, Billy graham, joey giardello or joey giambra - all defensively fantastic with incredible boxing skills. None of this hold the hands up in front of the face with no quality head movement crap you see these days. Floyd looks great because he actually learnt some true boxing skills from the greats of the past while his opponents continue to use the boxy, square on, gloves high walk up style that simply doesn't work against a truly educated fighter. boxing has gone backwards significantly, simple as that.

You could make an argument that Armstrong or Greb were better p4p than Robinson but unfortunately there is no film of Greb and Armstrong was old as shit when he got beat by Robinson but the fact that he lost makes many people write him off.

I love watching the small amount of archive that there is of Robinson, but seeing as Cassius Clay aspired to and imitated him should say everything needs to be said. Any true boxing fan that watches this man and takes into consideration the time, will surely consider him one of, if not THE best of all time. That's not to say boxers of our time would not beat him but of how far ahead of time he was and that's always the consideration.
Let's just give credit where it is due, and we should all be able to agree that SRR was the best, pound for pound, given how many fights he fought (so many more fights) and won. Different eras also brought different factors (that you can't see), training, and fighting styles, so that all has to be considered. SRR was living in the prehistoric much more pathetic version of America, so it was harder then just for him to live his life, let alone fight well, overcome whatever "games" he had to play, and be perfect in the public eye. He was an incredible athlete through and through. Even Muhammad Ali looked up to him. Other great boxers of the time revered him. I mean I don't even know why we are debating this.

Langford is the greatest light-heavy and a top 10 heavyweight of all time. Greb is the greatest middleweight ever and a top 10 light-heavy ever and Armstrong is the greatest featherweight ever, top 5 lightweight ever and maybe even a top 10 welterweight of all time. Robinson is the greatest welterweight ever and a top 10 middleweight ever. I would rank Robinson #2 out of Greb and Arstrong, but Robinson would have almost no chance with Charles or Moore and even Marciano while Langford would beat all three via TKO or KO and was the greatest puncher of all time. Those that saw Langford and Robinson fight, the majority agree Langford was the greatest ever and was inarguably the most avoided fighter ever. While Robinson avoided Burley (although Robinson was slightly better), Dempsey and Greb avoided Langford.

floyd getting knocked out is unrealistic. dont be biased and try to picture the fight from both perspectives. floyd mayweather is perfect, his style literally has no flaws in it, and his defense is the best in the history of the sport, and he's known to make good fighters look like amateurs. realistically floyd would win the unanimous decision
Hugh Hefner Floyd's style has a big flaw.. His defensive skills engulfed his offense. He became little by little a defensive two punch fighter, whose wins are based on points. These other guys fought with a 6 ounce gloves, practically the leather stuck to their nuckles, Floyd would have to open up when he started feeling the punches even on his arms and shoulders.
