  • In the winter of 1980 Muhammad Ali was in Peoria to help Bob Wallace campaign for U. S. Senate.
WMBD's assignment manager, Thom Serafin was able to arrange a one and one interview with Mr. Ali which took place at the then Peoria International Airport. Bob Leak was the videographer.
Before this interview Mr. Ali took part in a boxing demonstration at the Peoria's Boy's Club. I was told that Mr. Ali was "more than generous" with his time. That any young person who wanted to get into the ring and spar or box with Mr. Ali was allowed to. And he put just as much energy with the last young person as with the first.
That meant he was severely tired when he arrived at PIA. You can see it in the interview.
Our main Saturday crew shot the Boy's Club video, which was the b-roll for the story. Thom and I shot the one on one, which is what this video is.........

Should’ve retired after Foreman. He’d still be the greatest of all times. But the fact that he did fight 2 more times after this and still didn’t get knocked out, makes him even greater.

Not sure you can call the Holmes contest a real fight. Ali was mauled in the ring, and Holmes took it easy on him. The Holmes disaster should never have taken place. Ali desperately needed the money. No tune up fights (not that they would have helped-he was beyond shot in 1980). So the Berbick fight in 1981 took place outside the United States because no state would sanction another Ali bout. So they fought in the Bahamas. It is absolutely shocking to watch Ali interviews circa 1970 and then to this in 1980. It was ten years but Ali seemed to have aged at least 35 years. This is the behavior and speech of someone in their 70's and suffering cognition and speech issues. He's only 38 years old here!

@@dropway9108 He should have retired after the third Ken Norton fight. His timing was way off and he seemed to miss half of his punches. He even admitted after the fight the judges were nice to him and let him retain his title. Norton really clobbered him the last 3 rounds and Ali mostly stayed in a defensive "rope a dope" posture and tried to block the punches. He was a sad shadow of his former self and he had just enough skill and stamina left to win the fight. The previous fight with Jimmy Young should have convinced Ali to consider retiring. He looked awful in that fight-out of shape and his punches were way off the mark. Angelo Dundee tried to convince the reporters that Ali was in shape and trained hard for the fight, but it looked like he lost his passion for the sport and was only fighting because he needed the money to sustain his extravagant lifestyle and his huge entourage bleeding his bank account.

He's the greatest regardless of fights. That's not what made him the GOAT. It's bigger than that my friend. Talking stats minimizes his impact overall. Ask most fighters... they say it's ALI. Can't quantify his importance.

According to autopsy which aired March of 2017 Muhammad Ali condition had came from a pesticide that was scraped from his lung and put under a microscope and determined to be a pesticide. The pesticide mimic Parkinson's syndrome. So that's why doctors thought he had Parkinson syndrome for so many years. They also spoke about his private hospital records that couldn't be released until after he was gone, those records indicated Ali had been secretly going to the doctor for this issue and complaining since 1972 . The obsolete hospital equipment didn't pick anything up back then and would just send him home but the autopsy doctor said looking at those x-rays today shows something was wrong at an alarming rate. And if he was a professional athlete today they would have encouraged him to retire back in 72

the way he insults Holmes is mean. I never undestood this part of Ali. Here you won't find the excuse that it's a publicity stunt cause Ali was retired at this time. Called him ugly, no charisma, can't speak etc etc... waht's the point ?

@@emzid5105 lmaoo Ali respected Holmes, but imagine losing to your own sparing partner. Ali is very good at trash talking as you May know. He was never cruel or mean In that way.
