I just bought an Alienware m18 r1 AMD with ryzen 9 7945HX RX7900m 32gb of ram and 1TB SSD from Best Buy. New it retails for 2799. I paid around 1100. That’s around 1700 in savings(USD). It was listed as “good” condition. The reasoning “residue” aka FINGERPRINTS. This laptop was immaculate. Screws looked untouched. No visible scratches. The cable box still has a silica packet in it. Open box for me was a golden find. A little elbow grease and alcohol and I know have a machine to last the better part of a decade
I'm about to do the same thing on Friday. There's a Best Buy about 20 miles from me that has the same exact model, one left, open box. It's only 978.99 and in good condition... new 7900M here I come.
ive bought multiple used gaming laptops, most notible being a tuf f15 rtx 2060 which i still have and works perfectly after 4 years of use! and a rog strix with rtx 3060 which lasted me 2 years before i sold it and bought a brand new tuf a15 with a rtx 4060, my experience with used laptops have been amazing and saved me a ton of money, DO YOUR RESEARCH! its very important to know what you need to be looking out for! good luck everyone
Be careful with open box! I bought an msi gf65 from amazon in 2021. About 3 weeks later i discovered that my school bank account had been drained of my scholarship money. That was the most stressful time of my life. Idk what they had installed on there, but i replaced the hard drive just in case.

Inside of laptop is in like-new condition, outside just has a couple small scratches on the metal. Ordered it on eBay from a technology refurbisher and the machine turned out to be legit. I think this was a pretty good deal!

The device looks clean like almost new, temps are super good, the fans dont make noice unless you turn cooler booster on which i rarely use because the temps are that good and im living in one of the hotest regions on the planet. Gaming at 1440p max settings with smooth fps. I think i got a solid deal below $900.

The gpu scores are about the same as when I purchased the laptop but the cpu scores have dropped. Unfortunately we only test gaming laptops so I can't comment on pretty much any of those - I highly recommend the Just Josh UA-cam channel, those are exactly the sort of laptops he tests.

We would hope to be seeing 50 series next year, so it would depend on whether you're happy to wait to see if that happens and then wait for laptops to be available with them.
I remember myself getting a once in a time deal. a Asus TUF with GTX 1660 TI with Ryzen 7 3750H for just 250$. sadly the panel broke, but overall the machine is incredible. It is such a deal that I actually managed to profit when selling it to a computer shop, so low and so high spec that even if it is broken I still make a profit of 50$
I would recommend that your laptop have at least 32GB dual channel ram for handling professional modeling programs like CAD. 16GB is good enough for gaming, but you should have more than that since you plan to use the laptop professionally. I don’t think you would need to go higher than 64GB. For Solidworks 2019 and newer, if you want to do extremely complex and heavy simulation, then I would suggest the 4090 laptop gpu. However, that level of simulation is usually only done in the industry and specialized work station cards are usually used for that. You would be fine with like an RTX 4060 laptop GPU since you are a student. Heck, you could probably use a 30 series or 20 series laptop and I think it would be sufficient. Just don’t try modeling something with more than 10 million triangles in 4K. For gaming, the GPU depends on what kinds of games you want to play and how much money you want to spend. If you want to play the biggest AAA titles for the next 5 years at max settings or if you only play shooters or low graphical fidelity games. Also AMD CPUs tend to be more power efficient than intel which will give you longer battery life without a charger. Once you get these things down, then choosing a laptop will come down to brand. The popular ones are MSI, ASUS, and Lenovo. Out of these three I would pick the legion gaming laptops from Lenovo. They are solid gaming laptops with good value that preform well. MSI runs their temperatures pretty high and I don’t like ASUS as a company personally. That’s all I got in terms of advice. Wait for Black Friday or cyber Monday and find a 40 series GPU that fits your budget.

My friend got a used Legion 5 2020 17" with R5 5600H and 3060 for 600€. Actually it wasnt really used at all and it looks like brand new. The battery had like 14 charges. For that price and in such a good condition you cant really conplain.
I bought the exact same model [Razer blade 15, 2022, 3080ti with an i7-12800H]. I bought it brand new off of the razer website for $2099.99 during Black Friday 2023. (It may have actually been $2199.99, I know it was one of those two prices) The 3080ti preformed less than something like the MSI Titan due to lower TDP. So you aren’t really getting the maximum performance of the 3080ti. However, for games like RE4 and TLOU, you don’t have to worry about running out of VRAM (since you get 16GB), so you can max the textures in pretty much any game. The 1440p model with 240 hz screen comes with g-sync, which I use to eliminate screen tearing. In terms of comparing it to a desktop, I would say its performance is similar to an RTX 4060. A 2070 super is also pretty close for better reference.

@@mr.potatohead3870 According to Jarrod’s tech numbers you would get an average performance increase of 61% if you saved up for the legion 7’s 4080. I am not confident in Jarrod’s numbers (or if I calculated that correctly), but that’s a pretty sizable jump in performance. Meaning that you will certainly get much better frame rates. This result would mean that the legion laptop would be closer to an RTX 3080 in regard to performance. Plenty of performance for displaying 4K as well as 1440p. And the 4080 laptop comes with 12 GB of VRAM, which should be good enough for 1440p high settings for a while. I’m looking at a listing for a Legion Pro 7 Gen 8 AMD (16″) with RTX™ 4080. It has a 2560 X 1600 (a little higher than 1440p) display that is 500nits. Also much brighter than the Razer. It’s currently on sale on legion’s site for $2159.99. That’s actually a pretty darn good deal for what you are getting. Better than the deal I got for the Razer blade just in terms of specs at least. It really depends on how much you want to pay for a laptop vs how much performance you will get. Also what type of games are you planning to play? If you are interested in playing something like Alan Wake 2 or Black myth Wu Kong. The legion laptop is going to give you much better performance than the Razer. If you like playing big, AAA, single player experiences, then save up for the legion as you will get more life out of the legion. If you like shooters like fortnight, CS 2, or COD. Then the legion will still perform better, but you don’t need as much power so the Razer will save you money. (Ironic as Razer is super expensive). In conclusion: If you are someone who wants to be able to run the latest and greatest games without having to worry about tweaking settings, then save up for the legion laptop for the sake of future proofing. If you are content with running the current big AAA titles from 60-80fps with maybe DLSS quality, then the Razer is still more than sufficient for that purpose. If I were to give you my opinion, I would save up for that legion laptop. It has a brighter screen, better performance, better cpu, better battery life, and it’s currently pretty cheap. You will get more out of it in terms of future proofing. Razer is really expensive because their laptops have insane build quality. A sturdy all aluminum chassis is not cheap. The build quality of the legion laptop may be lower, but it’s still better than the average gaming laptop. That’s all I think you would realistically be missing out on if you went with the legion.

There is a deal for a 4080 for $2159.99. Great price for the specs. If you play a lot of shooters or non-demanding titles, then the Razer will be fine. It can handle AAA games well, don’t get me wrong. But you would get much better frame rates with the legion. I would suggest saving up for the legion. Better cpu, battery life, gpu, screen brightness. And it’s pretty cheap right now. Razer laptops are expensive because their laptops have Mac level build quality. Legion laptops are not as well, but they are built better than the average gaming laptop.

The G16 (2024) with RTX 4090 runs at a boost of 115 watts. It’s not going to max out the performance of that 4090, so I would suggest getting the 4080 if that’s a cheaper option for you. However, if you just want a laptop that’s on par with the PS5, I will tell you this laptop is overkill even with the 4080. The PS5’s gpu is comparable to an RTX 2070 super or a 3060. The 4080 laptop would be something like a 3080 desktop. To put that in perspective, that laptop gpu would maybe be 5-10% slower then the PS5 PRO gpu. The one that has not released yet. So, you would be fine.

I bought my laptop in January this year. It's a scar 16 with 13980hx and an rtx 4080. I've been facing stuttering problems for the past month, so I checked the benchmark scores now. The gpu scores are about the same as when I purchased the laptop but the cpu scores have dropped. I got a score of 29.5k in r23 when I bought it, and now I'm just getting 24.7k on r23 and 1.45k on r24. What might be the issue

Unfortunately we only test gaming laptops so I can't comment on pretty much any of those - I highly recommend the Just Josh UA-cam channel, those are exactly the sort of laptops he tests.

I remember myself getting a once in a time deal. a Asus TUF with GTX 1660 TI with Ryzen 7 3750H for just 250$. sadly the panel broke, but overall the machine is incredible. It is such a deal that I actually managed to profit when selling it to a computer shop, so low and so high spec that even if it is broken I still make a profit of 50$

I would recommend that your laptop have at least 32GB dual channel ram for handling professional modeling programs like CAD. 16GB is good enough for gaming, but you should have more than that since you plan to use the laptop professionally. I don’t think you would need to go higher than 64GB. For Solidworks 2019 and newer, if you want to do extremely complex and heavy simulation, then I would suggest the 4090 laptop gpu. However, that level of simulation is usually only done in the industry and specialized work station cards are usually used for that. You would be fine with like an RTX 4060 laptop GPU since you are a student. Heck, you could probably use a 30 series or 20 series laptop and I think it would be sufficient. Just don’t try modeling something with more than 10 million triangles in 4K.
For gaming, the GPU depends on what kinds of games you want to play and how much money you want to spend. If you want to play the biggest AAA titles for the next 5 years at max settings or if you only play shooters or low graphical fidelity games. Also AMD CPUs tend to be more power efficient than intel which will give you longer battery life without a charger.
Once you get these things down, then choosing a laptop will come down to brand. The popular ones are MSI, ASUS, and Lenovo. Out of these three I would pick the legion gaming laptops from Lenovo. They are solid gaming laptops with good value that preform well. MSI runs their temperatures pretty high and I don’t like ASUS as a company personally. That’s all I got in terms of advice. Wait for Black Friday or cyber Monday and find a 40 series GPU that fits your budget.

My friend got a used Legion 5 2020 17" with R5 5600H and 3060 for 600€. Actually it wasnt really used at all and it looks like brand new. The battery had like 14 charges. For that price and in such a good condition you cant really conplain.

I bought the exact same model [Razer blade 15, 2022, 3080ti with an i7-12800H]. I bought it brand new off of the razer website for $2099.99 during Black Friday 2023. (It may have actually been $2199.99, I know it was one of those two prices)
The 3080ti preformed less than something like the MSI Titan due to lower TDP. So you aren’t really getting the maximum performance of the 3080ti. However, for games like RE4 and TLOU, you don’t have to worry about running out of VRAM (since you get 16GB), so you can max the textures in pretty much any game. The 1440p model with 240 hz screen comes with g-sync, which I use to eliminate screen tearing.
In terms of comparing it to a desktop, I would say its performance is similar to an RTX 4060. A 2070 super is also pretty close for better reference.

@@mr.potatohead3870 According to Jarrod’s tech numbers you would get an average performance increase of 61% if you saved up for the legion 7’s 4080. I am not confident in Jarrod’s numbers (or if I calculated that correctly), but that’s a pretty sizable jump in performance. Meaning that you will certainly get much better frame rates.
This result would mean that the legion laptop would be closer to an RTX 3080 in regard to performance. Plenty of performance for displaying 4K as well as 1440p. And the 4080 laptop comes with 12 GB of VRAM, which should be good enough for 1440p high settings for a while.
I’m looking at a listing for a Legion Pro 7 Gen 8 AMD (16″) with RTX™ 4080. It has a 2560 X 1600 (a little higher than 1440p) display that is 500nits. Also much brighter than the Razer. It’s currently on sale on legion’s site for $2159.99. That’s actually a pretty darn good deal for what you are getting. Better than the deal I got for the Razer blade just in terms of specs at least.
It really depends on how much you want to pay for a laptop vs how much performance you will get. Also what type of games are you planning to play? If you are interested in playing something like Alan Wake 2 or Black myth Wu Kong. The legion laptop is going to give you much better performance than the Razer. If you like playing big, AAA, single player experiences, then save up for the legion as you will get more life out of the legion. If you like shooters like fortnight, CS 2, or COD. Then the legion will still perform better, but you don’t need as much power so the Razer will save you money. (Ironic as Razer is super expensive).
In conclusion: If you are someone who wants to be able to run the latest and greatest games without having to worry about tweaking settings, then save up for the legion laptop for the sake of future proofing. If you are content with running the current big AAA titles from 60-80fps with maybe DLSS quality, then the Razer is still more than sufficient for that purpose.
If I were to give you my opinion, I would save up for that legion laptop. It has a brighter screen, better performance, better cpu, better battery life, and it’s currently pretty cheap. You will get more out of it in terms of future proofing. Razer is really expensive because their laptops have insane build quality. A sturdy all aluminum chassis is not cheap. The build quality of the legion laptop may be lower, but it’s still better than the average gaming laptop. That’s all I think you would realistically be missing out on if you went with the legion.

If you play a lot of shooters or non-demanding titles, then the Razer will be fine. It can handle AAA games well, don’t get me wrong. But you would get much better frame rates with the legion. I would suggest saving up for the legion. Better cpu, battery life, gpu, screen brightness. And it’s pretty cheap right now. Razer laptops are expensive because their laptops have Mac level build quality. Legion laptops are not as well, but they are built better than the average gaming laptop.

The G16 (2024) with RTX 4090 runs at a boost of 115 watts. It’s not going to max out the performance of that 4090, so I would suggest getting the 4080 if that’s a cheaper option for you.
However, if you just want a laptop that’s on par with the PS5, I will tell you this laptop is overkill even with the 4080. The PS5’s gpu is comparable to an RTX 2070 super or a 3060. The 4080 laptop would be something like a 3080 desktop. To put that in perspective, that laptop gpu would maybe be 5-10% slower then the PS5 PRO gpu. The one that has not released yet. So, you would be fine.
Why not buy a real 4090?
