Tip #7: Don't buy a laptop with 8GB of memory soldered in with no expandability hoping it will last for 10 years.
Cleaning and software updates won't make it faster 😅
Updating won't help it, you're right but downloading Ram does
@@Sandkasten36 lol🤣🤣🤣
I got 4gb soldered. Been running since 2017, no problem at all. Been playing LOL and VALO.
@@wz-fv2ix we're not talking about an office machine with light gaming. We're talking about gaming or productivity laptops. LOL isn't the type of game we're talking about.
10 years is way too long for a gaming laptop, even a gaming desktop PC.
Tip #7 Always Turn on the RGB.
It will give you extra FPS.

@@vaibhav5568 no it will be fine. plus with many gaming laptops they will only use their full power while plugged in!
@@vaibhav5568 When they plugged in, they charge batery AND don't use it until unpluged, so it more healtly to have it always plugged in so it never have to use batery
Tip #7, If you spent around $4000 to get a maxed out laptop with a 4090, 64GB of RAM and 4TB of SSD space, get extended warranty as well. I spilt some water on the keypad and had a mini heart attack. That extended warranty came in clutch and I got it fixed for free (There was no damage to the internal hardware, but the keys did become sticky because it was sugary water).
Tip #7 Dont spill sugary water on your laptop
haha@@seanvideoediting
Actual tip #7, don't buy a $4000 maxed out laptop if you are stupid and put water near computers?
It's $4000, bud.
tip #7 you can have maxed out desktop and midrange laptop for the same price
why is a drink anywhere near your laptop. mine is 3 feet away always. as joker said you got what you deserved.
Tip #1: Please don't actually use your charger to prop up the back of your laptop. Most higher wattage chargers can get really toasty, and the last place you want to put it is under the laptop where the battery is actually located. Don't ever do that.
Exactly, I thought it's a bad advice when gaming and the charger pad really gets so HOT! Just use a thin and long book or anything that wouldn't make your laptop hot
I usually use my wallet as my laptop's standoff when I'm not at home, like in a cafe and whatnot 😂
I think you're being a little paranoid to be honest. Sure it's not ideal, and I said it's something I do in a pinch, I'm not out here recommending it, just making the point. Most people should just buy a stand.
Also most laptops have the battery down the front.
@@JarrodsTech You should not have recommended it in a pinch because most people that watch this won't use common sense. Of course, I wouldn't do this with an aftermarket charger. Only with an OEM (Most of them stop charging if they overheat). Not that they normally do on a consistent basis. Unless they are covered. Even then as long as it's not for long periods you should be fine. You just got to use common sense like gaming on a bed blocking ventilation fans. Point is it's better than nothing. Also, if you look at the video, he put the corner of the charger under the laptop. Just enough to tilt it, Not the whole charger underneath the laptop. Think people!!!
This is why I'm buying a laptop stand
Tip#8 : be careful about Tip#5. Make sure to backup your laptop frequently (make daily SSD images) especially prior to clicking the UPDATE NOW button. You may find yourself more unhappy than happy after the update ...
Yeah, that is why I haven't updated to Windows 11 yet, I don't know what is it going to break
I find this especially true with GPU driver updates.
or switch to ltsc since it only has security updates

an important tip is, laptop keybaord can leave a mark on your screen, ive had a dell g15 and legion 5 both keyboard spaces left irremovable marks i highly suggestt when u close the lid always put a sheet of cloth between the screen and the keyboard
Tip7:Do not disassemble the back cover of your laptop to clean the dust before you are unsure and have not finished cleaning the static electricity. Make sure you read the disassembly process of this machine, clean up the static electricity, and disconnect the battery cables.
how to clean static electricity?
@@davidekilla8222 Touch the grounding wire.
Thank you for the advice.
Tip from me- ALWAYS set an FPS limit... usually at the highest refresh-rate of your screen. It's made a massive difference to heat, on most games menus for EG, and on old Games too. I'm convinced an old game fried my old laptop because I found it rendering over 2,000 FPS & getting extremely hot... when all it needed was like 5% of that
good one i keep it as highest as 144hz which is what my display refresh rate is, and i limit it even further down to 35 fps when playing heavy AAA games
@@torpediq61how to limit the fps?
@@Rickyroy24 msi afterburner for example
Bonus tip, avoid using less viscous paste like MX-4, Kryonaut, KPx, etc on a laptop as they're more prone to pumping-out effect. They're best used for desktop CPU that has an IHS.
Honeywell PTM 7950 is currently the best choice for direct die cooling (laptop and discrete GPU) and you don't have to worry about it pumped out of the chip.
But if you really want a thermal paste, then you should get those thicker one like MX-6, TF-9, TFX, CryoFuze, etc. Thicker paste are less prone to pump outs.
And most importantly NEVER overuse K5 Pro for the VRMs and GDDR Memory NANDs. Because that will cause a short if the overflowing K5 Pro has touched sensitive components and grounding area.
@@killertruth186 thank you for the extra notes. 👍
I'm actually looking to repaste my laptop soon. Looked up online and people mentioned regular paste will dry out pretty quick and also the pump out issue, so it's a no go for me since I don't want to do it regularly.
People recommended the 7950, but I'm not sure where to find genuine ones (heard there are fakes out there). There's also kryosheet as well but that thing is expensive as hell. Two sheets for cpu+gpu is gonna run me like $25, which is twice the price of a tube of normal paste...
@@Summer-xu8qu the pricing of PTM7950 is around in the middle between kryosheet and premium paste.
But the largest size (80x80mm) option is somewhat the same as kryosheet and carbonaut though. At least in my country, dunno about yours.
If you often open up your laptop due to dust problems like me (I clean up my fans once every 6-8 months and I can't remove my laptop's fan without disassembling the whole cooling system), then I think you should prefer paste over PTM7950.
Because it's kinda a waste to use PTM7950 in that circumstances, longevity is its strong point aside from good performance.
Gelid GC extreme is an equally Viscous yet cheaper option, works great for my lappy.
Very useful advice! Thank you!
I don't have a laptop and am watching the video

Jarrod, my G, you're a Godsend. I literally just ordered my Legion 5i Pro hours ago and was thinking what to do to ensure longevity. I have always been someone who couldn't be bothered to care for their stuff but this laptop means A LOT to me as this will be one of my most prized possessions. Just want to say, thank you for all you do and keep on providing us with this insane value.
Further to point 1, consider undervolting
Good advice. I still game on my bed, I just prop up my laptop with a book. Works great. Cool temps and super comfy👍🏻
I think getting a laptop stand would be the best recommendation for #1 with a gaming laptop.
They’ll work on a flat surface, but it’s amazing what just lifting the laptop a few inches can do for temps and noise levels.
Can you still play on the keyboard comfortably though?.....Lifted *inches* off of the ground....
@@ricobico1872 you shouldn't put your laptop on the ground.... But in all seriousness, I didn't notice a difference.
@@ricobico1872but a new wireless keyboard and mouse to play
@@ricobico1872 😂
Maybe I should have been clearer. Stands usually lift the ass end up to 3 inches, while the front is still almost touching the surface the stand is on. Tilting my laptop with a stand actually made it easier on my wrists.
@@rowankeltizar5961 Why not?.... What's the point on having one then?...😂
3:01 the stutter in cyberpunk with advanced optimus was real. FINALLY this has been fixed. I thought it might have been a hardware issue with my laptop

I thought i was weird for talking and sometimes whispering to my laptop, thanks for proving me wrong, jarrod ❤️
I do it too. Upon first boot of the day, and when shutting down, and when we win while playing.
I gotta disagree with placing the laptop brick underneath the air intake. The radiating heat from the power brick gets sucked into the intakes. I learned that the hard way when I did just that to my Legion 5. No damage, though, but I hit thermal throttling way earlier than leaving my laptop on a flat desk.
That’s surprising, no need to put it fully under the back, just enough to rest on the edge of the brick with the rubber foot of the laptop gripping it. Works great on the 2021 Legion 5, not sure much has changed…
really loved number 6, i think animism is a real thing, so love your laptop
Love your t-shirts! \m/
I got this neat plastic cover for my laptop and it keeps stuff from going inside the keys.
Highly recommended it.
Only issue I have is it kinda weird to get use to but it helps a lot keeping your laptop does. :)
Basic but invaluable tips for the avesage gamer. Batteries on the larger and more powerful gaming laptips are really for supplementary/standby use pnly.

Where in Australia would you recommend buying the best gaming laptop? Also, whatever happened to metabox? Do you still recommend metabox/clevo?
THANK YOU SIR.
I personally also have 1 SSD with the stock configuration on the side.
In the past, when my pc would become unstable or worse I would get a problem with driver compatibility (black screen of death windows 7 for example) I would just swap the ssd, clone the SSD again on the problematic ssd.
This was much faster than reinstalling windows and then trying to remember what driver was the one working with your 5 year old capture card, how did you get that windows 98 game to work or other things like that.
Best part about this trick is that the OS ssd does not need to be large, so price wise it is a very small cost.
Yeh, I'm looking forward to a video about the Dell G15 5530❤
Insomnium, that’s a killer shirt man!🤘🏻
Great Vids, you got my sub and 2 THUMBS WAY UP!!

Secret tip for updates: look for how well the update is. Don't update anything in the software before you know well enough you won't lose features you love/rely on a lot, the update is stable and overall worth it.

Hi Jarrod! Will you make a dedicated video on how to boost FPS and performance on Gaming laptops (tips, nvidia settings, windows settings, background apps etc) better screen settings, and on how to extend your battery life. Because such videos do not exist when it comes to gaming laptops!
I recently upgraded to a new gaming laptop and now I have a feeling that the old one is trying to kill me in my sleep. Probably coz I was not aware of tip # 6. I kid you not! I still hear sounds at night from the closet where I have locked it. If only this video was uploaded sooner....
Honeywell PTM7950. That's all you need. And reducing the CPU clocks _without_ disabling Turbo Boost (from 4.5GHz to 3.5GHz, if the CPU base clock is 2.7GHz).
How?
ye tell me too@@Reaversword3D
@@Reaversword3D PTM7950 has the best performance out of all TIMs like thermal pastes and carbon pads (all go on the CPUs and CPU/GPU dies, it doesn't replace the need for VRAM thermal pads or thermal putty). The only other TIM that's better is liquid metal - but the margin is only around 2-4C compared to ~10-15C on thermal pastes, and the difficulty of applying and maintaining liquid metal makes it almost impossible for laptop manufacturers or laptop users to apply it well without some catastrophic outcomes, which I experienced myself (I'm glad the laptop I serviced still works, I was extra cautious when removing factory liquid metal on an Asus ROG laptop which spilled away and breached the first line of defense and caused CPU stability problems due to shorting the SMD components on the AMD CPU).
Thus it means that PTM7950 is 7-10C better than all newly applied thermal pastes. What is more, both thermal pastes and liquid metal all have limited service life of around 1-1.5 years on gaming laptops (yes, there's a reason why I had to service a laptop with liquid metal applied from factory). PTM7950 has a service life starting from 2 years but can be left unmaintained up until the laptop breaks after 10-15 years, with hardly any performance degradation. This is because PTM7950 (not PTM7950SP, which requires extra steps to apply properly) does not suffer from the pump-out effect, nor does it dry up like pastes, because it doesn't have silicon, which thermal pastes do.
There's a tutorial on Major Geeks website about reducing the "maximum processor frequency" setting in Windows' Control Panel, which would let you fine-tune the CPu clocks downwards to improve efficiency and decrease the heat, without effectively halving your performance per core by turning off Turbo Boost and having your CPU only reaching the base clock speed, which is usually too low.
2:29 regarding updates whether driver or software, I'd be cautious. I recently updated my legion 5i 2022 drivers and after updating intel management engine driver, my laptop fans ramp up for no reason even at idle. They go max rpm then randomly stops.
Spread that load out ? Ayyoo!!??😂
Hi Jarrod, at 0:46 isn't it more dangerous to stick the charger to the laptop base which gives more heat and screws up them all?!?
the charger is at bigger risk than the laptop imo.
the edge of the charger he meant by showing that, dont keep the laptop on the charger but just wedge the charge just enough to prop laptop up
that is indeed a very dangerous tip, Gaming Laptop Chargers heat up quite a lot and need to be kept away from area where they can even cause burns.
(like my Razer and Asus ones used to heat up soo bad I had to keep them beside cool walls to absorb the heat)
@@virgo3368 yeah both gets hot simultaneously affecting each other, it should be an irony or joke like tip 6 :)
yeah, what a terrible advice
For intel CPU there is a notebook check article that decreased my laptops CPU wattage on low load and idle around 1-2 Watts or less. Also literally doubles battery life

Also make sure to uninstall all the bloat which companies bundle unnecessary ( including Microsoft bloat)
What is that small laptop stand you were using at 0:42 called?
Id say avoid firmware/manufacturer updates for a couple ofnmonths (time required for them to receive warranty reqursts, get feedback and then to fix the firmware)
Had both dell and Lenovo laptop that either brokenthe sound or nvme firmware rendering the laptop partially/completely useless. The technician had to physically replace the component on both occasions
My legion 5i touchpad was disabled after i downloaded and installed a windows update. good thing i rarely use my laptop with a touchpad but its so freaking annoying in some cases
I LOVE USING MY LAPTOP AS A DINNER TABLE
i thought the bonus tip will be to turn on the rgb lights
I nearly killed my laptop charger in the first week. I’d not spotted that a jumper had fallen on top of it, it was toasty to say the least😂. It’s still working as well as new 2 years later, people worry too much about laptop CPU temps they are designed to be OK with heat and you’ll likely upgrade before you kill it.
I want that laptop stand off you were using 😮

Also dont listen do the clowns that say gaming laptops are bad

How do you clean most laptop outtake vents as they tend to get clogged the most , laptops like dell allow you to remove the fans without having to remove the heat sync and thermal paste
Hey buddy please record a comparison video between lenovo legion go and asus rog aly.
Hey Jarrod, you should probably link your second channel in your channel's about section, since apparently youtube has removed the channels tab. Also, is your channel's profile picture gone?
Still waiting for the warranty to end to clean it my self. Too bad i really need to go to the service center so that i can clean my laptop
gamers, disable your boost behaviour (guides can be found online) when not gaming or even light gaming. chances are it will lower your fps or system smoothness by slightly noticable but temps will go down to 40 - 50 degree celcius

Hey Jarrod!. We all know that the most anticipated game is Gta 6, for which the trailer is gonna be released this coming Tuesday, 9:00 ET.
I really think you should think about creating a video for the same based upon it's visuals, graphics and try to figure out the Minimum and recommended PC specification according to your expertise.
