Took me over 2 hours, BUT, I took my time, didn't rush things, and made sure all of my plastic parts (and the 2 filters) were super-cleaned and sanitized. This also solved a problem I'd been having with my unit making noise, which was keeping me from sleeping!! (ironic, I know!) Again, "Thank you!!" for this video, as even though I'm a pretty decent "DiY Guy", I was not looking forward to going into "Unfamiliar Waters", and your Step-By-Step video made this project more than tolerable and SUCCESSFUL!!

Followed your lead. Last night my machine started wheezing with inhalation. Plus it seemed that it was an effort to inhale, not enough pressure. So today I took it apart and cleaned everything. The foam ring was extremely dirty and the fan blades were caked with stuff. I actually submerged the motor in dishwater for an hour, soaking the gunk, and then blew the whole thing out with a hair dryer. Man it works sweet now, like brand new. Seems to have more pressure too! I'll make another comment after trying it out for a couple days. There is no telling how degraded the performance might have been over time. Thanks for the effort.
@@ShipMonster no, I ended up buying two more of them. It was too complex for me to disassemble. But I have used it on and off, and still does the job. I just play some rainstorm sounds and don’t worry about the noise.
First video I found that talked about the modem. After replacing the motor, I was getting "Error 001" which means a bad motor or main board. After disconnecting the modem, the error code is gone and the machine runs well. Thank you for posting this video.
This is the most useful video I've found in a while. I can tell you, as an ex smoker with a stinky cpap, that after you quit smoking, you will want to clean your machine. The blue silicone cover for the pump was the stinkiest thing for me. Surprisingly, the foam circle did not smell. Weird! But anyway, thank you so much for making this video. You're out here saving lives and you don't even know it!
I used a CAN OF AIR or computer compressed air duster on the second attempt on the internal motor assembly and it’s NOW PERFECT, my first attempt with just a hoover on it did nothing. Thank you so much for this video, thanks to you we can sleep peacefully again, I hope you realise how many people you are helping with this !!
Many thanks for this video. I just bought a used ResMed that had a very slight hint of smoke smell. Taking it apart and cleaning it took care of the problem. Just a couple of observations on my experience: Exercise utmost care during reassembly, specifically the pressure sensor connections mentioned on 17:05. Also, there is another part (looks like a ring with a silicone gasket, it is actually sandwiched between the humidifier tank and the back end/output of the pump assembly) that was not shown on the video, but it my case it fell off when I pulled out the pump assy. This piece apparently connects to another pressure sensor on the front circuit board. Make sure the opening is properly indexed/oriented toward the sensor on the board. After reassembly, my unit would not trigger the auto start function and during the cool down, the pressure was pulsing (instead of the usual gentle slow constant pressure). Took it apart again and reassembled it carefully, fixed the problem.
Thank you! Motor was whining all last night. Took it apart, cleaned it, blew out the motor with an airbrush, and voila, no more noise! Appreciate the instructions.

Mate, a top guide. For decades when on a project, I'd always have a screw or bolt leftover, with friends laughing. But my repairs worked. So glad I now have videos like yours. I'll be doing this clean to my Resmed now - and yearly.
Really clear instructions in a strip down and reassembly of this quite complex bit of kit, which solved my problem: a dirty and therefore noisy motor that required an air clean. Local Resmed shop didn't want to know. Thank you
Chalk-up another heart-felt Thank You! for this video. Only suggestion would be to amp-up the volume as I had a hard time hearing the audio even with headphones. Having said that, the steps were presented to perfection and I was able to complete the process easily and confidently. I had tried in vain to find someone locally that was willing/able to clean mine. I don't live in a small town. This allowed me to resolve the problem myself which is very satisfying. Thanks Grant!
Excellent video. I was experiencing a whining noise. Blowing out motor I still found the fan blades were dirty. I used large pipe cleaners and dipped the end in alcohol. Folded 1/4” of the cleaner end over on itself to avoid the sharp wire scratching blades. Using wire snips I cut off the dirty end of the cleaner after every blade cleaning. Had to do circumference multiple times letting alcohol dissolve the dirt. 20 minutes, a few air blows and they look clean again. Much quieter. Thank you

This video was very helpful i found out that i put in my new fan motor in backwards i struggled with connection to run fanmottor so as soon as i turned it around the connection wire was alot easier to connect but this video was awesome
A word of advice. Be careful when touching any of the electronic components. A electrical charge such as walking across a carpet could mess those components up. Touch something metal before you touch the components or use a electro static strap. Thank you for your video and taking the time for the presentation . Well done . Cheers.
Thank you! I was thinking of taking mine out of the box and giving it another try, but have always been weirded out by the modem in there spying on me. I just have the boring, black AirSense 10, and am a bit jealous I didn't get a pretty one with leaves on it. It's all clean and put back together without the modem because it was just in the way when putting it back together. I'll keep it in a special place so I don't lose it in case I sell it, LOL.

FYI newer Airsense 10 Autos have the For Her algorithm built in now. But thank you. This guide was integral to a successful teardown for me. Got it torn down, soaked, scrubbed and rinsed every part (except main board, motor and modem of course). Despite being good at reading down electronics, I thought this would be more complicated. Very good guide. Also worth noting for others, somehow I twisted up the climate control ribbon cable and could get it to align properly. You can pop the other ring off and realign the ribbon through the channel.

Insanely helpful and easy to follow. I am having trouble with getting it to blow air reliably but I may have pinched a wire somewhere as this was my very 1st time taking apart my cpap. I had black ants inside and with the cpap shortage I was told nothing could be done to help me. So I searched for a video and saw this. Thank you so much. It’s not perfect but it’s ant free and once on stays on. 👊🏻

Thank you for the video as I'm about to prepare my father's machine for sale but I would also take out the hose connector at the back as I have done this before on my machine and was very surprised to see how dirty and mouldy it was.
*Great Video.* Thumbs up! These machines are quite well designed and constructed. A deep cleaning does require disassembly and that can be scary without some knowledge of how it goes together. Too bad I didn't find this video before disassembling one of these. It takes a lot longer when you need to figure out how it is constructed. Fortunately, I got it all stripped down, cleaned and reassembled without any issues. *Note:* When reinstalling the pump assembly, the air connection right by the screw needs to be aligned (your video didn't show that, but just in case people are not aware). Also, to remove any trace of bacteria (the usual culprit of bad odors), a good soaking of washable parts in vinegar, followed by dishwashing soap and rinse is ideal. *Question:* Where do I find replacement parts? In particular, the two larger air fittings between the pump and the reservoir.
Well done video with clear instructions, thanks! Also, just want to point out that you forgot to finish tightening the fourth screw which you left loose to help with alignment.
Only 45 subs. You deserve more. You now have 46 subs because I hit the sub button. Was going to pull my airsense 10 apart to see why it’s got a whistling sound with every breathe I take. I assume it’s the motor but I’ve looked around and no motors or spare parts available
@@adrianhammett341 no I haven’t Asian. I pulled mine apart and gave it a good clean. I can only think that the motor is causing the noise but when I span the motor using a vacuum cleaner hose to spin the motor I couldn’t hear any worn bearings. So I’m still having the same issue.
@@tadstertrolley7770 Resmed will usually just tell you: "We didn't sell you the CPAP. A dealer did. Go to them." But - Resmed will surely get in your way of repairing this. Right to repair means you should be able to buy the motor. I hope someone is a lawyer in these comments.

Exactly what I needed...worked in sleep for 30 years...first time tearing a PAP down. Blower noise, thought I needed to replace blower, but just adjusting how it set in the silicon sleeve appears to have solved the problem???...thank you
Thanks for making this video! I got my first CPAP a couple days ago (AirSense 10 AutoSet). I always want to understand how everything works. But, I didn't want to take the CPAP apart to learn how it worked since I rely on it. So, your teardown was exactly what I needed to satisfy my curiosity.
This video only shows you how to clean the chamber that holds the compressor motor (Do not let water near the motor). It does however let you see how to do it without doing damage and paying someone to clean it. CARE should be taken as you will not be able to get spares (closed shop) not sold to the public. However, if you have an old on it is of great value knowing how to get into it without causing more problems than you started with.
@@BoB4jjjjs is there any kind of class action-type lawsuit to allow replacement motors to be ordered? (Right to repair.) There are similar actions against Apple and their touch screen. Seems a bit silly you can't replace the part that would fail the most often: the motor.
@@fitybux4664 I know, you should be allowed to repair it yourself, but they have it sown up for now! That may change, but they will not give you the motor anyway, I would bet! They won't stop you with the right to repair, if you send it back to them for repair. :-(( They will repair it for you. No doubt at a cost to suit them!
Great video. One thing you missed is the output port which can be removed for cleaning from inside the humidifier area. That watch though... been a while since I’ve seen someone rocking one of those! ;-)
Thanks for a great video - very helpful. I have read all the comments here and related ones elsewhere. My concern is mold inside the motor enclosure and within the motor case itself. The white substance on the fan blades may be that, and scraping it off from outside the motor case does not begin to get at all of it covering the inner walls of the clear housing.. This I fear is the dirty little secret about this machine - years of respiration through it's inaccessible innards inevitably make it a health hazard.
Came here to see if it made sense to try to dig into mine and fix the whirring noise rather than paying the deductible on a new unit. Fantastic video but after seeing that the blower is not easy to break down without brute force, I guess I'm just now the proud owner of a new machine. Had mine for four years before the noise just started out of the blue one day.
No brute force required. 4 years is very short life for this machine. It should last a minimum of 10 years and can be refurbished to live indefinitely.
After reading all the comments: Did you get water in the motor? (If you had the humidifier dish tilted too far, this can happen.) Also, it's possible that a dirty filter let a big dirt ball into the motor. I too have the "whistle on inhale" and I'll be tearing into mine, in the hopes of not having to buy a new one.
*IMPORTANT!* a very common mistake at @5:20 See the 2 small blue valves at the top left corner. They are the "Air Pressure" valves that detects your Bi-Level pressure. Make sure you line them up properly when you put it back together OR your VAUTO air pressure sensor will get blocked. I suggest you test to make sure VAUTO works before you put the screws back. Don't forget to set Ramp to off for Bi-Level pressure to work when you do the testing. That is, Press Home and Dial together for 3 seconds for the settings to come up, check Mode = VAUTO, go down, Check Ramp Time = off. Thanks for this! My CPAP gets used a lot outdoors in the field and so its a pretty worn out machine. Got to say the inside was gross. I didn't notice a smell much when using it, but the inside smelt bad. Guess I got used to it :| But the machine seems to flow more consistently and I don't get runny noses as often from the dander.
This is the best video on UA-cam for cleaning the Resmed S10 that I have seen. Do you have a source for parts in the motor? I am getting gray and black dust on the inside of a filter in the head gear. I think it might be the balck foam piece in the motor housing. Thanks again for the great video.

my foam ring (mine is green, the one on the video is dark grey/black) was completely chewed up. I can see foam bits in the motor. I guess i found the cause of my failure. Thanks for the video

Excellent video. Mine is 2.5 years old, and the motor is whining. I can't get another cpap for 1.5 years. They want 800 to service it. Your explanations are great, though I suspect there may be some slight differences. I will look for debris but think it's a motor issue. Might have overfill it. Where can you get parts?

Thank you! I was thinking of taking mine out of the box and giving it another try, but have always been weirded out by the modem in there spying on me. I just have the boring, black AirSense 10, and am a bit jealous I didn't get a pretty one with leaves on it. It's all clean and put back together without the modem because it was just in the way when putting it back together. I'll keep it in a special place so I don't lose it in case I sell it, LOL.

FYI newer Airsense 10 Autos have the For Her algorithm built in now.
But thank you. This guide was integral to a successful teardown for me. Got it torn down, soaked, scrubbed and rinsed every part (except main board, motor and modem of course). Despite being good at reading down electronics, I thought this would be more complicated. Very good guide.
Also worth noting for others, somehow I twisted up the climate control ribbon cable and could get it to align properly. You can pop the other ring off and realign the ribbon through the channel.

Insanely helpful and easy to follow. I am having trouble with getting it to blow air reliably but I may have pinched a wire somewhere as this was my very 1st time taking apart my cpap.
I had black ants inside and with the cpap shortage I was told nothing could be done to help me. So I searched for a video and saw this.

Thank you for the video as I'm about to prepare my father's machine for sale but I would also take out the hose connector at the back as I have done this before on my machine and was very surprised to see how dirty and mouldy it was.
*Great Video.* Thumbs up! These machines are quite well designed and constructed. A deep cleaning does require disassembly and that can be scary without some knowledge of how it goes together.
Too bad I didn't find this video before disassembling one of these. It takes a lot longer when you need to figure out how it is constructed. Fortunately, I got it all stripped down, cleaned and reassembled without any issues.
*Note:* When reinstalling the pump assembly, the air connection right by the screw needs to be aligned (your video didn't show that, but just in case people are not aware). Also, to remove any trace of bacteria (the usual culprit of bad odors), a good soaking of washable parts in vinegar, followed by dishwashing soap and rinse is ideal.
*Question:* Where do I find replacement parts? In particular, the two larger air fittings between the pump and the reservoir.

Only 45 subs. You deserve more. You now have 46 subs because I hit the sub button. Was going to pull my airsense 10 apart to see why it’s got a whistling sound with every breathe I take. I assume it’s the motor but I’ve looked around and no motors or spare parts available

@@adrianhammett341 no I haven’t Asian. I pulled mine apart and gave it a good clean. I can only think that the motor is causing the noise but when I span the motor using a vacuum cleaner hose to spin the motor I couldn’t hear any worn bearings. So I’m still having the same issue.

@@tadstertrolley7770 Resmed will usually just tell you: "We didn't sell you the CPAP. A dealer did. Go to them."
But - Resmed will surely get in your way of repairing this. Right to repair means you should be able to buy the motor. I hope someone is a lawyer in these comments.

Casio basically hit perfection when they made this watch. I just wish they would update it with a stainless steel case and scratch-proof face. But then no one would ever need to buy another watch again.

Thank you! They now use tamper proof screws, but they can be removed with a small screw extractor using the screw side only.
Go to ifixit and buy their screwdriver set complete with all sorts of security bits. Nice kit they have there.

Exactly what I needed...worked in sleep for 30 years...first time tearing a PAP down. Blower noise, thought I needed to replace blower, but just adjusting how it set in the silicon sleeve appears to have solved the problem???...thank you

I got my first CPAP a couple days ago (AirSense 10 AutoSet).
I always want to understand how everything works. But, I didn't want to take the CPAP apart to learn how it worked since I rely on it. So, your teardown was exactly what I needed to satisfy my curiosity.
This video only shows you how to clean the chamber that holds the compressor motor (Do not let water near the motor). It does however let you see how to do it without doing damage and paying someone to clean it. CARE should be taken as you will not be able to get spares (closed shop) not sold to the public. However, if you have an old on it is of great value knowing how to get into it without causing more problems than you started with.
@@BoB4jjjjs is there any kind of class action-type lawsuit to allow replacement motors to be ordered? (Right to repair.) There are similar actions against Apple and their touch screen. Seems a bit silly you can't replace the part that would fail the most often: the motor.
@@fitybux4664 I know, you should be allowed to repair it yourself, but they have it sown up for now! That may change, but they will not give you the motor anyway, I would bet!
They won't stop you with the right to repair, if you send it back to them for repair. :-(( They will repair it for you.

Thanks for a great video - very helpful. I have read all the comments here and related ones elsewhere. My concern is mold inside the motor enclosure and within the motor case itself. The white substance on the fan blades may be that, and scraping it off from outside the motor case does not begin to get at all of it covering the inner walls of the clear housing.. This I fear is the dirty little secret about this machine - years of respiration through it's inaccessible innards inevitably make it a health hazard.

Came here to see if it made sense to try to dig into mine and fix the whirring noise rather than paying the deductible on a new unit. Fantastic video but after seeing that the blower is not easy to break down without brute force, I guess I'm just now the proud owner of a new machine. Had mine for four years before the noise just started out of the blue one day.
No brute force required.
4 years is very short life for this machine. It should last a minimum of 10 years and can be refurbished to live indefinitely.
After reading all the comments: Did you get water in the motor? (If you had the humidifier dish tilted too far, this can happen.) Also, it's possible that a dirty filter let a big dirt ball into the motor. I too have the "whistle on inhale" and I'll be tearing into mine, in the hopes of not having to buy a new one.
*IMPORTANT!* a very common mistake at @5:20 See the 2 small blue valves at the top left corner. They are the "Air Pressure" valves that detects your Bi-Level pressure. Make sure you line them up properly when you put it back together OR your VAUTO air pressure sensor will get blocked. I suggest you test to make sure VAUTO works before you put the screws back. Don't forget to set Ramp to off for Bi-Level pressure to work when you do the testing. That is, Press Home and Dial together for 3 seconds for the settings to come up, check Mode = VAUTO, go down, Check Ramp Time = off.

Thanks for this! My CPAP gets used a lot outdoors in the field and so its a pretty worn out machine. Got to say the inside was gross. I didn't notice a smell much when using it, but the inside smelt bad. Guess I got used to it :|
But the machine seems to flow more consistently and I don't get runny noses as often from the dander.
This is the best video on UA-cam for cleaning the Resmed S10 that I have seen. Do you have a source for parts in the motor? I am getting gray and black dust on the inside of a filter in the head gear. I think it might be the balck foam piece in the motor housing. Thanks again for the great video.

Excellent video. Mine is 2.5 years old, and the motor is whining. I can't get another cpap for 1.5 years. They want 800 to service it. Your explanations are great, though I suspect there may be some slight differences. I will look for debris but think it's a motor issue. Might have overfill it. Where can you get parts?
