Unplugged! A Hand Tools Only Project. Milling, Joinery, Dovetailed Drawers. With Tips for Beginners.
I wanted to give some of the tools in the cabinet a chance to earn their rent so I made this small shelving unit with two dovetailed drawers. A lot of work for a tiny project but a lot of fun and satisfaction along the way!

High End Darts Cabinet - A Complete Build: From Design to Dovetails to Veneer.
Great work, I love the precision aspect that helps make you a better artist.
Dude, using a grout float as a soft push paddle is pure genius.
I love it. Cheaper and grippier than the ones I’ve purchased from Rockler. Thanks for watching.
@@quillwoodworks thank you, that is definitely going to be what I use on my router table and jointer from here on out
Well done, sir. I like the extended rabbet to hold the lid. One potential opportunity I noted was that there isn't room for the bottom to expand. It's a small box, so the expansion and contraction of the bottom will be slight, but the natural wood movement may need to be accounted for. I greatly appreciate the time and energy invested in the video aspect also. That can be such a time suck. Top notch work all around, sir!
Thanks for the nice words! With the bottom panel being nice straight grained material and also less than 2” wide, I wasn’t concerned with movement. But like you said, on a larger piece it would certainly need to be accounted for. I appreciate you watching!
In your first drawer you said you have sanding blocks to keep surface rust off the hand saw, what kind of sanding blocks do you use for this? Thanks for the video.
Hi. I also use them to clean any slight surface rust on hand planes. Look up “Sandflex Hand Block” on Amazon. “Medium” cleans things very well. Then I follow up with the “fine” to match the factory finish. Thanks for watching. They also sell a “coarse” but I’ve never needed that one.
Where did you get your glue spreader?
From Mom and Dad. 😊
What size plane do you use on the shooting board?
I use the Lie-Nielsen #62 low-angle jack.
Gorgeous project. Thank you!
Thanks Sothpaw!
Great video. The box looks amazing.
Thank you, buddy. Much appreciated!
Do you have plans for this build? I’ve been searching for a nightstand I like for weeks and really like yours. Thanks.
Hi Cristian. I appreciate you watching but unfortunately don’t have plans available. Sorry.
Awesome, sure wish I had all those tool's, il pretty new so i don't !
Thanks Dave. I’ve been at it for over ten years so that really helps!
What wood are you gluing veneer to?
Hey Bill. It was glued to MDF. If I recall correctly, 3/8” thick.
This project reminded me of Woody Hyezmar's Bible somehow…, although you can currently get it at no cost, the projects are worth a good look. Maybe try go’ogling his latest.
Came for the woodworking, stayed for the humor. Lol
What jointer do you have?
Hi Matt. It’s the 8” Jet with the helical head. JWJ-8HH.
@@quillwoodworks Thanks. Would you recommend it?
Yes. I really like it and have had zero problems with it over 5 years.
Nice little project packed with great tips. I hope you find making these videos as enjoyable as I do consuming them. I think I'll watch it again. 👍🏼👍🏼
Thank you, Bill!
11:47 If your guitar playing is as good as your woodworking, I think you can be the next Hendrix or SRV. 👍🎸
Ha! Thank you buddy.
Is reason number 5 for making a small box ..... it's fun ?
Love your videos! They calm my nerves. No power tools is refreshing and so is the fact that you don’t blast ‘power cords’ on the music sound track! Can you tell me when you use an edge trimmer vs a shooting board?
Thanks John. I’m always trying to find that delicate balance between playing some music in the background to keep things a little lively without it being a distraction! I appreciate your input. The edge plane, I believe is only 3/4” wide, so anything wider would go to the shooting board. And it’s really great on parts longer than 16 or 18” when they can get unwieldy on the shooting board. Thanks again for tuning in!
Good video, great box! I need one of those small brass hammers. Where did you get it?
That is from Lie Nielsen. Sometimes I feel like it was a slightly silly, extravagant purchase but I do enjoy using it every chance I get. Thanks for watching!
@@quillwoodworks Thanks.
Thank you for this tool tour. I would guess that there are many who have gone the same route as you and me, buying hand tools then migrating to more power tools. I wouldn't want to change this progression though, learning to sharpen plane blades when doing all your processing of rough wood has been essential, now we can get a razor edge on our smoothing plane to use after weve used a power jointer and planer. I can also sharpen a hand saw as needed. But I too find that a few power tools replace MANY hand tools. Great channel, very low pressure, love of the craft on display!
We seem to be on the same page. I recently put out a hands-tool only video and while the small project was fun to make, I couldn’t help thinking how tedious making a dresser would be using only hand-tools. The mix of both power and hand tools really maximizes my enjoyment of the hobby.
Beautifully executed. Looking forward to your next project.
Great insight, thanks for sharing.
What are the dimensions of your workshop? If you could rebuild it, what size would you make it after having used it for a good while. I'm planning to build one later this year. Thanks.
My shop is about 30x12. If I could wave a magic wand 30x20 would be great to give me some more breathing room as things get tight when I’m building large projects. Best of luck in building your shop. BTW…I have a shop tour video on my channel that may give you some ideas. Thanks for watching.
@@quillwoodworks thank you 🙏
@@quillwoodworks Thanks for replying.
Nicely executed. Thank you for sharing. I’ve had a few ideas about making little boxes for my kids. Your video got my gears turning.
Hi. First video of yours I've watched. Really enjoyed your easy-going pace and methodical work. New subscriber. Also SRV was the greatest :)
You will get no argument from me on SRV. Only wish I got to see him perform in person. Thanks for the nice words and for subscribing!
That was a nice little build. I hate Bundt cake.
I liked the Ferris Bueler reference at the end. Nice job!
Hand-tool woodworking is so therapeutic.
For sure, Tom!
I find that if all parts of a project are not connect, they tend to drift around and get lost. You should make multiple tops to impress your friends when the old top gets lost. Stay busy!
With so many impressive woodworking tools, amazing how dust free your shop is. Impressive.
Weather permitting, I like to start the day using the leaf blower to blow out any dust the collection system has missed out the garage door.
What shooting board is that? I think I've seen it before but I thought it was a custom job
That is the Veritas shooting board that I got used for less than half-price. I had to tap some new holes in the rail to accommodate my LN bevel up jack but that was pretty easy. I made a short showing that process: ua-cam.com/users/shortsoeK3AaJq07U?feature=share
This is the first of your videos that I have seen, and you got a subscribe even though I have no woid shop. I just enjoy seeing beautiful things being made, whether it's a small box or a massive cathedral😎
Thanks for subscribing, Earl!
Fun to watch. Thanks for sharing.
I'm impressed by how well you edited out all of the wheezing and cursing after the cuts get started.
It was all AI. 🤖
what a nice project. well done
Great stuff.
Nicely done.
Beautiful job. I like the contrast of the walnut and ash. What sharpening system do you use? Maybe a video on that.
Hi JD. I use Shapton water stones up to 8K grit along with a honing guide. I generally sharpen most tools with a 30 degree microbevel. Maybe a future video, indeed. Thanks for the nice words.
@@quillwoodworks Thank you for the response and the information.
Something very satisfying and relaxing watching someone do wood working with only hand tools. No power tool noise, just the peaceful sound of hand tools and a master at work. I always appreciate the patience some have to do things that way since I don't have the patience. So I don't feel too bad about myself I like to think I'm just going for the rough rustic old and weathered look. Enjoyed your video.
Thanks for your insight and for tuning in, Daniel.
A well done video! I would like to know about how you made the swivel lid? I can't seem to get it in this video. Mostly measurements.
Hi. The notch is only about a 1/4” long and about 3/16” deep in addition to the rabbet that runs around the perimeter of the inside. Hope that helps.
@@quillwoodworks Don't you have a pin for the lid to turn on?
No, Matt. It just rests in the notch when tilted back.
@@quillwoodworks I do appreciate you responding to my question. What a good idea you have. It takes your work to another level and it is so simple' I will use it in my next box. I have a shop with a full complement of tools and I am in my eighties. I thought I had seen just about everything concerning wood working but your design is a first. Thanks pal!
Beautiful piece, wonderful skills, I think this will be my next project.
We have several small boxes I made in our living room. When items such as these are made out of beautiful wood, they invite being picked up and held. Great job. Thanks.
Agree with your sentiments 100%. Thanks for watching, Robert.
This is a beautiful piece~! I really like your video format and am all in favor of your using tools without power cords. ;-) I've been a power tool woodworker for over 30 years and I've been bringing hand tools into the picture over the last 18 months (thank you to Rob Cosman for his inspiration to do so~!!) This looks like a project idea that I might have to "borrow". Thanks for sharing it~!
Thanks for watching, Andrew. Much appreciated!
Outstanding video. Thank you!
Great project. Admire all of the detail in your work. New subscriber. Thanks for posting.
I appreciate you watching and subscribing. Thank you, Bill!
Loved it. You have a great narration style and the level of detail is great -- informative, but not too much repetitive detail. Love your dry sense of humor too! One question -- what right angle/ edge plane is that?
Thanks for watching and the nice words, John! That is the Lie-Nielsen No. 95 Bronze Edge Plane. Currently out of stock, along with quite a few of their other tools, as Lie Nielsen sorts out their production issues. Thanks again!
my shop space is similar to yours - what lathe do you have??
It’s the Jet 1640EVS. thanks for watching.
Thanks!
I truly appreciate your support! Thank you kindly.
Looks great and a wonderful showcase for your skills both as a woodworker and a presenter. Please do a video about the finish, especially the grain filler.
Thanks for the very kind comment. I just may do a video on that sooner rather than later.
Finally something worthwhile in the torrents of so many woodworking tools videos a simple yet beautiful piece of craftsmanship 😊
That’s very kind of you to say, Aman. Thank you!
