this is such a mood. I have been watching nothing but vtubers these past few months. what is anitube? what is subbed ANIME?? all i know is raw-japanese live streams!
As a Vtuber and a fan of yours, thank you for making this!!! I think the Vtuber community, not just the vtubers themselves, but also the fans have created a really fun environment for everyone! Some may see us as "clout chasers", but when I was at my lowest Vtubers always brought me out of it. I wanted to try and spread that same happiness to others! Plus it's been helping me with my social anxiety and allowing me new experiences. Plus now I'm a cute anime girl and anime is life.
Perhaps but I'm not a person who watches streams a lot so even tho I've watched them before I don't think I can ever get into it to be honest I don't even know why I'm writing this eh whatever it's at least something interesting that has risen in the internet
"Apparently, Voice Actors have a very important job; they imbue souls into beings that are otherwise soulless. To put it plainly, they bring things to life, like any decent god should." - Shaltear Bloodfallen, Overlord
Wow, when I first heard (or technically read?) that line in the anime, I just chucked at the joke, but seeing it here, that quote is actually really deep. 😲
Something you didn't touch on, but Vtubers made learning japanese so much better. The feeling you get when you pop into a chatting stream and they understand you is nothing short of amazing
Funny you say it, because before this video I get an ad for a vTube channel focused in learning Portuguese (my language). So I though "wait, would make more sense a channel that help Brazilians learn Japanese?"
I started by watching the HoloEN debut streams thinking "There's like five, I bet I'll find at least one I like." Two months later I don't have time for anime anymore WHY ARE THEY ALL SUCH GOOD GIRLS.
Tell me about it. I was subscribed to Korone after watching her DOOM compilation. HololiveEN came out and I was like, okay those 5 and that's it. I don't want them to clutter my recommendations. Then learned about Aki. And her dedication, she basically made an entire language to sing in. So I subbed. Then Okayo, and her singing. Subbed Then Coco. And her asacoco got me addicted. Subbed. After the Moona-Pekora arc. Subbed. Hachama, I have no idea why. I guess the effort she put to talking English. And the weird shit she pulls off. She is either mad or genius. Hell I am trying not to sub to a bunch of others. Pettan Potter (XD), Suisei (the struggle was real), Robert (are you winning son?), Risu (Nonstop NN), Miko (I think I am giving up on trying not to), Towa (Maji Daitenshi).
Man same here. I only watched Korone and a few collab clips here and there. Initially i was a little skeptical about the holo_en girls because I really liked the japanese element to vtubers..but then i ended up watching all of their debut streams and falling for each and every one of them. THEY ARE SUCH GOOD GIRLS INDEED!! and god...don't get me started on when i discovered Nijisanji..... (yall should definitely check out nijisanji. they feel like 1 big family of nerds... and the diversity of their characters/personalities/genders is just sooo good)
I 100% feel you dude. I started watching Korone about 7 months ago, just sticking to her. But then I was like "Hmm, maybe I should try and check some of the others, and then it just kinda spiralled, and now I'm subbed to literally EVERY Hololive girl, as well as all the Holostar boys, and I'm sitting at Holotools all day, watching multiple streams at the same time.
Also, the topic at 14:55-16:55 As someone who never enjoyed or was interested in livestreamers or general kizuna AI like contents, This kinda explains my recent fall down the rabbit hole. Finally a good F-wording video that actually understands and gets all sorts of hololive fans. Kudos Matt
One of the coolest things to me has been the genuine break down of international barriers. Seeing Japanese memes and jokes mingle with English speakers, and vice versa, feels so crazy and feels like a real tear down of the imaginary lines we draw on the world map. And now with Kiara I've begun to see Germans throw their hats into the ring as well. It really feels like it's becoming an international community with jokes, references, memes, and everything being spread as far as possible. I wouldn't be surprised if there is a growing numbers of translation channels in other languages just to start breaking down the barrier further.
If you haven't already you should give holostar Aurandeisu a watch. He breaks down Japanese net slang for English viewers and has other streams asking English viewers to explain memes to him
Not to mention the number of people learning new languages just to interact with the community. This is by far the closest I've been to learning Japanese. For myself, not for being a super weeb, not for some job, and not for a spot on the resume but because I WANT to. I want to learn and see more of this world. I want to be able to experience things from other countries with new people!
Serious talk, discovering HoloLive & V-tubers in general legitimately improved my life. These are all genuinely talented and amazing entertainers and performers and their content has made me smile and feel happy far more then I had in many years. It’s something really special for me and I hold it very close to my heart.
@@Cecilia-ky3uw I dunno. The same reason I don’t really watch Boku no Hero or Demon Slayer. I mean, I can get why other people like it, but I just don’t. Just the way it is.
Vtuber's superpower is that they can break past the thick barrier of hyper irony which has been built up around the internet community. They can do shit with a straight face that 99% of the time would make anybody cringe, and somehow stay within that 1 remaining percent. Because It's ok to enjoy things unironically. And it seems that most people forgot about that.
Can I just say how much I appreciate Geoff talking about Holostars as well, however briefly? Thank you so much for bringing up my boy Roberu, our winning son himself. The casual atmosphere he creates with Bar Robel is such a pleasant and relaxing environment, and he's also clearly a master entertainer. The Holostars guys absolutely deserve more attention, and I hope more people check them out!
Any world created by humans is 10 thousand times better than the life we live now. You may think you're happy but in reality you're trying to fill a void a certain moment left in you so long ago.
@Squalleon Kennedyheart It just sucks when the toxic people are gatekeeping, I see numerous content creators I like trying to communicate being instantly called leeches when they try and talk to a Holomyth member on twitter, it’s not the whole fandom I know that, but it’s still annoying.
Yup, I agree. It is hard to casually wander I to the open secrets. You need to search. Sure it is a first page Google rest but you never know about it unless you search for it.
It's a delicate line, to be sure... keeping the community wholesome while avoiding over policing it or toxic gatekeeping. But, that being said, despite the occasional Twitter cancel crusade or creeper in chats... it is STILL one of the most wholesome communities I've seen. You look at individual communities like indie Vtubers Ironmouse or somesuch, or big companies like Hololive...the fans tend to have a genuine respect for the person behind the persona, beyond just 'simping' or 'lewding' them.
@@DerelictSong Well, I got recommended this cool singer after watching a vtuber and I had no idea they where the same until a couple months later when I did some research. Maybe I am just bad at identifying voices?
Ok, this is a really personal story about how Mori Calliope helped me recover from loss. January this year, I lost someone dear to me to suicide. Ever since, the fear of my own impending death hounded me, being compounded by the pandemic. That was until I found a clip of a Mori blasting away on a recorder. That was where it started. Soon after I listened to her debut single, then her other songs, and finally I watched her first stream. I was instantly enamored with this complete dork of a reaper trying to act natural. As the weeks passed, I slowly put away my fear of death because I knew her. She makes weird-ass noises after drinking copious amounts of convenience store wine. Death swings wildly back and forth between being a hard ass rapper and the most adorkable sweetheart I've ever seen and totally sells it. Mori's an artist, she struggles, she worries, and she vents through her art just like me. After becoming a Deadbeat, I started to feel like Death is a close friend of mine. Thanks for reading! Have my favorite Mori clip: ua-cam.com/video/ampLVylI5k4/v-deo.html
Wow, are you me? Though the underlying cause was different, your experience in falling inside the rabbit hole is eerily similar to my experience. Have a nice day fellow deadbeat!
The thought of Death hounding at me was a similar problem I had, but it wasn't because of the trauma of losing a loved one, it was because I develop an unhealthy mindset of being afraid to face it. Like everything will just end at that point, I won't be able to witness space travel, or I that I'm stuck with the time I have. That was until I started watching Vtubers , to spare me from making this 1000 words long, what I gained from the rabbit hole is an immense amount of wholesomeness like nothing has done for me before, I became happy, happy to have been a part of this, happy to have this with me now, Mori being Death contributed to that too, but the main thought that is placed in my mind shifted from "Death will be the finish of everything, it's the end" to "So what if Death is the end, I found Vtubers , something that is now an irreplaceable part of my life and my identity, I have this now. When I die, I know that I've enjoyed it with something precious. (There's also the Vtubers themselves encouraging just taking care of yourself and valuing life'
"For whatever reason, it's taboo to bring up the VTuber's true identity, even if it's an open secret." We all know damn well the reason why it's become taboo over the past few months in particular: the tragedy of Mano Aloe. That was the day where hyper-obsessive stalking became not just frowned upon, but actively LOATHED in the community, along with a healthy dose of backlash against traditional idol values and the notion that VTubers ought to have the right to take off the mask and live a normal life when not streaming and their private lives are none of our business beyond what they willingly share. You WILL be reviled and exiled if the community sees you crossing that line. Never forget.
There were videos popping up "exposing" Matsuri, and I've seen every single one of them dislike bombed to oblivion. I've never been prouder to see them get deleted.
See I wish that this was the reaction my koreaboo self could experience. We lost some major names to suicide and for a moment the korean idol fans took a moment of reflection and I thought we’d finally become more wholesome. I was devastatingly sucker punched by the Kpop community seeing tons of hate and fan wars flowing freely and I’ve come to distance myself from my fandoms though I still support my k-idols. The vtuber community hard core united to protect their idols after the tragedy
@@Filcayra72 I am getting shit in my recommended where they are exposing there identities and past lives its fucking disgusting and there are people who are supporting it too. .Also giving recommendations on who to dox next
That was a horrible thing to see and I’m sad we couldn’t help her out. At least we able to rally around Towa and let her know how much we did appreciate her. Now CoCo and I forget who else is dealing with this crap and I’m like “God dammit they’re f’ing human beings! Stop fixating on your fantasies and realize you’re the people you supposedly “love” them sooooo much, and yet your the ones hurting them the most!”
God, that little moment with Ina gets me every time. You can tell there is just a sweet soul behind her avatar, and its one of the reasons she has become my favorite. What's better is they have all had those genuine human moments from time to time. It really help demonstrate what makes them all so lovable.
Ina's Mori's Just listening to Suisei talk about how she got to Hololive. Learning that Miko used to be a failed vtuber project. That Kanata used to eat grass, with how poor she was. The 13 people debut of Sora. The many injuries of Watson. Social anxiety of Pekora. Yup, the more you fall into the hole, the more you learn.
@@ODDnanref Watson’s injuries aren’t something one gets emotional about, more her story of her taking care of someone and then them suddenly being gone, most likely insinuated to be dead, that’s fucking tragic, when you hear her injuries you’re both shocked and confused.
@@maksumnoiz136 The thing about Watson's childhood stories is that they kinda give off the vibe that she was a neglected child. Also, when asked about her parents, she said that they are in "another timeline", which kinda implies they both passed away.
I don't know what happened. One moment I'm laughing at some dog girl saying "Eekum Bookum", the next I'm unironically watching a time traveling detective and a shark play minecraft. I'm in too deep in this rabbit hole, and the only path is to go even deeper.
Dude same. I started by watching that shark sing Sorairo Days from Gurren Lagann. Now I'm watching that time traveling detective play Minecraft at 1am.

No clearing history can do. Once you watch one-Algorithm has your back with more clips. There is no escape from the rabbithole. No Ladder, just a shovel

@@gddesigner Welp, you're officially here for life. Welcome to the rabbit hole, we have copyrighted memes and far too much time on our hands. Also, on the subject of recommendations: Korone's English-only streams (Retro Mario with the resident Bread Dog God) Any of Gura's singing (The best ones are Sunday Morning, Plastic Love, Baka Mitai, and Fly Me to The Moon, and if you can find them, the slowed down versions are just art) Towa either singing or just being a meme Polka's Among Us streams Subaru's attempts at ASMR (the official hololive animation is excellent and has good subtitles) I wish you good luck with your future shrimping.
I remember the moment where I stopped caring what was real and what was an act. It was listening to haachama puke into a ramen cup and then immediately doubling down on promoting her idol career. We really reached peak anime with that one.
I can't even bring myself to watch normal anime anymore after I fell into this rabbit hole. Why even watch seasonal anime anymore when you know that Hololive's Sport Festival Arc is AOTY?
I loved this video and I feel like it encompasses well about everything that makes Hololive, Hololive. It's something about those bite sized clips and interactions between each other that keep me coming back everyday I was lost at first, there were so many generations and I didn't even realize Holo-EN, ID, CN existed until eventually their clips rolled into my recommended, but after about a week I was able to get a really good grasp of every single Vtuber, with the help of inside joke comments from the community and just the sheer amount of clips that float around It was just pure entertainment and there's literally a character for everyone Are you a toxic gamer? Try some Watson You fancy Tyler1 as a Vtuber? Have a dose of Rushia You like profanity? MikoP and Coco are there There's just so much variety and uniqueness of each vtuber in one world that it really feels like an anime with immense character development to learn for every character, it's almost guaranteed that you'll be hooked in because of every vtubers different personality Don't even get me started on their talent too, YAGOO jokes and idol jokes get thrown around all the time but their talent is no joke. Hearing Okayu and Suisei's singing for the first time really made me realize just how talented these "idols" could be. Calliope's rapping too is second to none, absolute lyrical genius. It wasn't long before I had a long playlist of my favorite hololive songs I really have the community to thank for my good times watching hololive lately, I've been met with (for the most most part) so many recommendations and helpful comments that have allowed me to really learn and appreciate the culture of hololive And last but not least before I end up writing an essay, the MVPs are definitely the subtitlers; without them I probably would've never found Hololive ever, and ironically I fell into the rabbit hole from one rabbit trap video... good times Also side note: I'm glad you included da Holostar boys 😎👍 this video was super duper good man
honestly getting into this "rabbit hole" was probably the greatest moment thing that's happened to me this year for a lot of the reason you laid out here. The hours that have gone by being entertained by such a talented cast of animated idols is nothing I regret and am truly happy that I discovered something like this.
My perspective is that I'm just happy to have another way of using youtube that isn't just watching political stuff or commentary free gaming or some guy reviewing video games in a negative and snarky way. Don't get me wrong, I still enjoy those things, but hanging out on a Vtuber stream is just a great way to switch off and not think about how awful the world is for a few seconds. Gura's my personal favorite, as she has perfect intentional and unintentional comedic timing. Also she finds a way to make jokes even when a horror game is scaring the crap out of her.
This is the first time in a long time that my recommended feed hasn't been filled with bread. Which I like a lot! But yeah, it's nice to get away from *gestures at world*
Don't normally comment but damn, this essay encompasses EXACTLY what's sucked me in to Vtubers. Excellent video, Geoff! I appreciate the hard work you put into your content. :)
I don’t know but V-tubers and Hololive in general feel like a big family and when they’re doing well, you feel super happy for them. The kind of thinking that since they made me happy, it’s my turn to make them happy
If you’d told me eleven months ago that a shitpost-reviewing dragon, a murder-happy dog, a Keter-class kitchen hazard, and a smol shark girl would end up being my primary sources of entertainment for this year... I’d have probably been very confused. Still a fun ride, tho.
What I like most about this is how close friends are able to stay connected and show genuine love for each other even when they're miles apart, and the anime cover enhances the escapism of this other happy world that at the same time feels very real, and organic. There's some priceless moments in these unscripted videos you just cannot capture with traditional actors.
Hey there, I wanted to say thanks for making this video. Even though someone like me was only indirectly referenced (via participation in Mori Calliope's Remix contest), you've once again managed to remind me why I wanted to be a VTuber to begin with. Streamers and - well - content creators in general, face the same basic problems of trying to "beat the game" of things like the algorithm and otherwise move beyond the monotony of getting bigger and bigger audiences. Between a platform like YT telling us to expand growth or pay for ads or Twitch having an RPG-like system of reaching affiliate/partner status, there's a lot of invisible pressure to get yourself noticed. On top of all that, we ourselves have dreams of doing the things we love for the people love. You are an excellent example of someone who remains humble by constantly saying things like "Here I am getting paid to talk about anime." and while that is one way of looking at it, I choose to watch your videos (on my personal account uwu) because the way that you handle subjects is from the perspective of an outside observer. You're not necessarily unbiased, especially considering that Charlotte was good and you can fight me, but you have a natural talent of talking from the viewpoint of the average person who enjoys a particular type of content. Your "What's in an OP" series inspired me to do streams like Music Monday, and embarrassingly enough, I originally wanted to call those streams "What ELSE is in an OP?" as homage but then I got spooked about copyright. I guess TL;DR, you've made this video talking about the magic of VTubers but somehow managed to miss talking about content creators just like you who serve as a platform for the as-of-yet unenlightened masses. Sure, Gigguk and a few other "famous" people have already fallen down the would-be rabbit hole, but he's not an anime pope so it's definitely different. In the spirit of the upcoming American season; I'm very thankful as a VTuber myself to have fans like you and everyone around you. It doesn't matter if you watch my streams, the streams of my friends, or exclusively stick to Hololive, because the fact of the matter is that as long as people like you are here to enjoy VTubers, we'll keep striving to hold your attention. - K.O. signing out from his landlord's basement.
When he mentioned the toxicity in this community and keeping the girls identities a secret I remembered a certain pink haired succubus and it actually made me real sad
There's been a problem like that with Gura ever since her debut, with theories abound about her previous ventures, even when she's said that she was in an awful place before hololive and wants to leave it behind.
@@themanofquagga hm? I think that's a little bit different. i think its more comparable to filthy frank and joji tbh. not gonna drop any forbidden knowledge, but I feel like gura still kinda respects and considers her past fanbase, and I'm pretty sure they do too. her past fans don't bring up her past identity in streams or comments, but sometimes you'll see a reference in a comment on her rumored previous channel. Gura left some hints as well, and she's basically left her old channel untouched, so it's more of an open secret that she doesn't mind too much as long as it doesn't get out of hand, I guess. I'm not gura so idk how she really feels, but I just think that this situation is a little happier and safer than straight up trying to find a certain pink haired girl's real life identity, stalking her, and being an absolute dickhead.
@@dehydratedwater4759 I have no idea what happened. But you seem to imply a tragic death of this person. If that's the case, if you wouldn't mind, could you explain what happened?
I was trying to avoid vtubers because I kept seeing clips on my timeline and it was really obnoxious to me, but all that changed when I saw the Trash Taste episode with Mori that made me want to try it out. I then watched the debut streams for all 5 HoloEN members and immediately fell in love with Ina. I enjoy all five but Ina really grabbed me. With her extremely soothing voice, art skills, and just overall chill vibe I can’t stop watching. It really hit me when she broke down and had that moment. Everything about her feels so genuine and I love it. Oh, she also plays mahjong, so that’s also massive bonus points
@@Birdthefeatheredone I know lol I’ve already consumed about a month’s worth of streams in less than a week. Not getting out of this rabbit hole at this point
Vtuber legit changed my life. Seeing watame grinding for her dreams no matter how small her steps are is just admirable that it inspired me to work for my dreams too.
I'd been aware of Vtubers for quite sometime, but it wasn't until HoloLive EN debuted that I really fell down the Pekora hole. Those girls now take up the overwhelming majority of my free time but dammit it's totally worth it.
Same, I followed Kizuna and caught glimpses of the other vTubers and I started following Korone from seeing clips of her on Twitter. But I didnt go all in till I realized that theres an EN branch
Have been in nearly a year in this Peko-hole. It is still quite fun, in fact so fun that i have to multitask to watch and special stream, or events or collabs. Free time is gone, i have to deal with this... i am so, SO far gone. Yet as you say, it is quite worth it.
"Haachama is Scrappy." Geoff, I will fight you in the street. Joking aside, having fallen down the Vtuber hole just before the HoloEN girls debuted (like literally days before), I can only agree with every point you made.
Ever since I found the rabbit-hole I was and still am so inspired that I picked up pixel art which has really interested me, and gave me more motivation to learn Japanese and even Bahasa Indonesia. I have never felt happier and I must thank Hololive and Holostars for being so fucking awesome and making such wholesome communities.
Holy f*ck, remember that episode on Psycho-Pass about the online idols? Gen Urobuchi, just how much have you predicted that. My god, that's so impressive.
Also, very specific thing. The slight horror when one of them gets up, or gets out of the live2d detection space and you just see the neutral puppet is kinda amazing in it's own way, especially after seeing it be animated by someone for hours and hours
It's also interesting the times when the puppet is taken over by someone else (usually on off-collabs). You can tell that there's a different personality controlling them.
One of the most wholesome things is about the language barrier. How Korone, Pekora and many others legitimately work hard to learn English or even taking extra classes so that they can interact with oversea viewers. And since HololiveEN is a thing, there are many EN clips with JP subtitles and HoloEN actually encourages many of JP fans to learn English so they can watch their favorite EN stream more. Previously there was clips of JP Vtubers with English subtitles. And now you can see in every clips oversea fans called the JP fans "JP Bros" and thanking each other and work together to support their favorites Vtubers. It's something that for the life of me, I'd never imagine could happen. I've been telling my friends to learn English more so they can expand their knowledge more, and never worked. Only after they fell in love with hololiveEN they seriously thinking to learn English. Not to mention the actual character development you can see from interactions between each other. For example the recent PekoMoona arc. The super introverted Pekora that likes to play game solo, and Moona that is shy and is not confident enough in her JP/EN overshadowed by the other two HoloIDs. Who would have imagine that relationship between them will be a thing at all. But look at them now, both of them changed. And there are many others as well. This Vtuber rabit hole even better than my favorites slice of anime. Anyway, just want to add little thing. My favorite Vtuber outside of hololive girls is Nijisanji's Belmond Banderas. Just imagine a Vtuber voiced by similar voice to Iskandar from Fate. lol the joke aside, I really love how gentlemanly he is. Someone I respected and aim to be.
Honestly, I wasn't sold on the idea at first. It wasn't until I saw Calliope do a 2+ hour video on Trash Taste and found myself captivated the whole time that I really started to figure it out. Vtubers are people. People playing a character behind a layer of pixels, but people nonetheless. They're interesting and funny and relatable in a way that really connects with others. The fact that it's by design doesn't lessen the impact; of course the successful ones auditioned or were scouted. Of course agencies are going to look for talent, because that's what they need to sell the brand. But behind the cutesy avatars and exaggerated personas are actual people, and that's something we don't get a lot of in the anime sphere. The best waifu in the best show is ultimately just a fabrication. You may feel like you get to know them over the course of a series, but the relationship is entirely one way. Vtubers may be playing a character, but in order to maintain that character so consistently for so long, it has to be built on something real. That bleeds through to the stream and makes the whole experience seem more authentic. Plus, traditional waifus can't react in realtime with the audience. They don't get exasperated when people do goofy shit in chat, or get emotional when chat decides to bully them with outrageous donations. The feedback loop really sells the experience.
The best waifu in the best show is ultimately just a fabrication. You may feel like you get to know them over the course of a series, but the relationship is entirely one way. Vtubers may be playing a character, but in order to maintain that character so consistently for so long, it has to be built on something real. Subaru, Mio, Azki, Miko, Roboco, Haato, Okayu, Korone, Flare, Nene, Botan, Basically all of Holostar except Oga and Shien. Same with HoloID being themselves from the very start. They pretty much merged into and become one.
The more important part people need to realize is that *any* streamer or entertainer in general is playing a character to some degree, in the end it is no different. There is no more authenticity there on the average than in a vtuber. But with vtubers they in a bout of absolute irony, don't have to pretend that everyone is their best friend and they're being 100% genuine and totally buds.
There's also the part where their career as a Vtuber, the relationships they build with their colleagues and fans change them. For example, Pekora started as a very anti-social person. Even among the other Holo girls, she didn't socialize that much. She didn't even tell her mother about her job. After one year and a half later, now, she became friends with Moona, overcoming her shyness and language barrier. Moreover, she finally come out to her mother in a very heartwarming livestream. We can watch those people grow and develop in real time and it's very satisfying, we feel touched.
What were the thoughts running through your head as you we're watching her on the podcast. I genuinely want to know other's people perspectives on their exposure. Since mine was different (I got pulled in by the shitposts, I had to see more from this anime girl who vomitted live)
@@teo-7242 At first I was trying to figure out how the hell they made a virtual character occupy real space, but once it became pretty clear that she was 90% personality and 10% performance, it became a whole lot easier to suspend disbelief and just take the whole thing at face value.
While the cute looking characters designs and the funny memes may have been what drew me in at first, it's the people behind them and the genuine moments that they produce that keep me coming back again and again
It's a nice touch that the bigger companies will usually try to have the designs of the vtubers be influenced by the people behind them. Korone having her name based on her "soul" having experience working in a Bakery and Okayu's name coming from her family owning an Onigiri shop. Those small touches make the personality and the character come together as one believable person. Of course, stuff like Nijisanji's Otogibara Era's change in personality after her debut is still amazing.
From what we know of Hololive's practices, the streamers definitely have input on what their character will be and look like, and I heard that the audition process also includes people needing to come up with their character concept. As for personality, part of the appeal of vtubers is that their personality is pretty much the streamers' most of the time, and as a result can change and evolve over time, a fact acknowledged by most of the agencies and even made official videos of (Hololive has an official "before and after" video where they show the differences between the streamer's debut personality and their current one, and the changes are rather hilarious). There is a reason that the official character profiles for vtubers tend to be quite sparse, and most of the details are filled in by the vtubers themselves over time.
This video has changed my life for the better, and I for that I want to thank you Geoff! It convinced me into looking into vtubers, and after a short while of scouting through a few different vtuberstreams I became hooked on Nyanners, and a few months after Juniper Actias. From there I entered their amazing communities and had one of the best years of my life because of that! Thank you again so much!

Probably more accurate if this was said at least a year ago... We're at the point where hololive itself is the entrance to the vtuber hole. No joke, a lot of people who got into vtubers with the appearance of hololiveEN probably only know Kizuna Ai by name.
Fubuki was a couple months ago I think. Miko was a little further behind in time, the hole GTA V stream. Yeah, now it is HololiveEN because English and because it was promoted for English speakers. RIP CN. ID got unfortunate, but Risu is getting there with NNN.
@@ODDnanref ID is starting to get popular, moona for example between her pekora collabs and the tour of gura and amelia through the holoJP Minecraft server got a huge boost
I am yet to hear of someone who started watching vtubers and then stopped, it is an endless abyss of pure cuteness and happiness and no amount of therapy (or lashings) can force me away from my new addiction.
This video was the first to introduce me to the whole Vtuber phenomenon and, since I'm not a fan of watching long livestreams, I didn't think it was something that would appeal to me but after seeing videos of highlights from HololiveEN streams I have to say... I get it.
Something you didn't mention about the Fubuki 1M sub moment was that the collab was with all the members of Hololive Gamers, the unofficial 2.5 generation, which hadn't had a collab in a long time. The first time that all of them collabed with each other for a long time, one of their members hit one of the biggest milestones in UA-cam live. It's one of my favorite moments.
It's not like you can talk to these streamers as if they were your friends. Cause friends don't exist and I'm too afraid of breaking someone's heart so I'll continue to refuse.
Even before covid-19, I used intense stares to communicate with people, because I'm a creep lmao. More seriously, I was quite a loner, and I'm sure I'll continue to, but I learnt that human relationship can't be "complete" with only non-physical communication. Exposing yourself directly with someone give you both a "trust contract", you take the energy and risk to exchange with somebody so that somebody will respect his part of the deal. Therefore your relationship is clearly established and you got mutual respect in your communication. In online communication, your relationship is always chaotic, you don't have responsability nor respect to have, and even subconsciously you will not feel the need to invest yourself in the relationship. You will not learn much about someone, about human relationship, or humanity with this lack of investment. As a loner I can tell you need a gambler spirit when you talk, to pay an high risk value to maybe get more, and honestly mondane talks or everyday talks with strangers is very alike of a game where the goal is to reach the most beautiful conclusive point in the end of the conversation. But I'm a cheater, I know well enough how to judge people and what to expect from them with a quick stare, but it's another thing useful for loner because you reduce the feeling of risk when you know where you're heading. I'm losing my point, anyways what I wanted to say is that a loner is the one that need the most to talk in face of a stranger, because it's someone you will never encounter again, who don't care about you and probably will never remember you. So you have the freedom to fail and retry with another one, it's as hard and simple than that. And in my case my problem wasn't fear but distrust for people because I was betrayed a lot of time in my childhood and my sociopathy preventing me to understang how someone else think or feel (if you're not sociopathic you got already a great advantage trust me lol), and since my childhood I developped my analytic skills to understand by listening the mecanics of conversation and by observing how to understand another one's feelings. It's my method and I think I'm quite a common person so you will surely need to develop your's, but I think it is already a first step. Also this comment is not so much for you than all the people unsure about their communication skills, and because I am naturally one of them too but I know some tricks. However I advise you don't read or listen to communication formation on internet, it's bullshit to trick people who are bad to continue being bad, you have to create your weapons yourselves, otherwise you will never understand how your weapon works and which to use. If you remember one thing from this lost comment on UA-cam, remember this.
It's like a combo of Streaming and pro wrestling, now hear me out, we all know that a good percentage of it is acting but there is an unspoken rule that we buy into the kayfabe.
I'd call vtubers more "inverse kayfabe": wrestlers act to try and convince you that their acting is their real selves; on the other hand, vtubers stream and try to convince you that the personalities on display are those of a fictional character's.
I really love this video, but it just kinda struck me the wrong way how much it seemed people might be convinced this is all an act? And that those genuine moments are just a character slipping away? Like don't get me wrong, I don't think Amelia is an actual time traveler or that Korone is a dog or anything like that. It's just that you can feel a real genuine enjoyment for everything that they do. I feel like Korone isn't playing up any kind of "energetic dog" character, but she's just a very introverted girl who has something that she's passionate about and has a place that she can just be herself. As someone who's similar, I've definitely felt the exact same kind of energy and excitement in a situation like that. Definitely some things are played up for bits but that'd be like when somelike like Markiplier acts like he's a narcissist or an idiot for a joke. It's a temporary bit but it isn't indicative of who he is. The only reason I think it's important to say this is just because I think some people might assume "since it's all just a character there's really no authenticity to it" or insult them because "I'm not insulting a real girl so no feelings get hurt". Basically I just think that the kayfabe would only be maybe 10% of their actual personalities, with the rest being completely authentic, especially with the HololiveEN girls. If it was more like 95% kayfabe then Pekora would be a timid and cute girl and Haachama would be a tsundere, since that's their character's original personalities. But as with all members of Hololive I think, their characters quickly fell away after a while and now we mostly just have slightly heightened versions of their actual personalities. I'm not great at putting my thoughts into words but hopefully I expressed my thoughts well enough.
I think you said it well. I know I talk about this being an "act" because even if a Vtuber is being a slightly heightened version of their actual personality, they're still in front of thousands of people. If you're being asked to entertain a crowd, you kind of have to be deliberate about the things you say and do, right? This is a parasocial situation. We have to be mindful of that distance and be careful about the conclusions we may jump to about the person animating the character - about assuming we have a complete view of their personality and history. We're just fans.
Exactly this! This was the main point I disagreed with in the video. I feel as if it's difficult to even say that the girls are ever "in character" because they are the character. Sure, the models might have basic traits or descriptors by themselves, but it is the role of the person to fill in the details of the personality. More often than not, this occurs naturally as the character comes to life using the real person's characteristics. This much is also backed up by the several stories told by the girls in various streams that serve to prove the consistency of their personalities. I feel like there is simply a barrier that is meant to prevent anyone from being able identify the voice actresses - that barrier being the fictional realm. Whenever sensitive information could be leaked, the girls most commonly resort to using the fictional lives of their characters to protect their identities. Beyond that, and perhaps some exaggeration for entertainment purposes, I believe the Vtubers of Hololive are always 100% authentic and true to themselves.
@@Ice-mg5pr true. A good example was on Kizuna AI's case. The real reason why the whole clone thing back then blow up (even tho non-chan wasnt replaced) was because people genuinely love non-chan's persona that is Kizuna AI, not some rando who act and speak like her. Same case with why GameClub failed miserably as they replaced the people behind their characters nonchalantly. They never act, they just displayed the kinda persona they always wanted to show the world but wasnt given the chance to.
Hey Geoff, I don't usually go out of my way to comment even on videos of yours that I really enjoy but I wanted to say great job on this video nonetheless. I don't have too much else to say because I think you pretty much nailed all the most important aspects about v-tubers (at least to me) as brilliantly and succinctly as possible - I could probably watch an extra 30 minutes of you gushing over favorite moments etc - and I'm overall incredibly glad someone gets it. Not to mention someone who gets to voice themselves getting it to a broader audience and spread the joy of this medium. It's such a fascinating and effective blend of gaming, art, and anime... real and not real... wholesome and degenerate. Welcome to the community!

damn this is the biggest 5head review. So accurate, especially with the horror section. and in regards to the Minecraft section I feel that too, I used to watch The Yogscast and they had an amazing sense of community (back in like 2011) as they also had their own "characters" and stories that they played and coexisted in the same world, no cams back then either (I recommend their Tekkit series btw). and I have never been able to find this sorta thing again until Vtubers, who have managed to reignite that and it feels so great ^^
Legit sad that when you were talking about how artistic and talented the girls are, you didnt bring up AkiRose creating a WHOLE NEW LANGUAGE for a single song.

Everything from your choice of vocabulary to you're immaculate and very astute articulation to your very soothing yet enticing voice makes me just so weak and hungry for more your video essays. One of my favorite things about vtubers is that it allows the creators to become successful content creators while still maintaining their privacy. Most content creators nowadays are very public, which makes it difficult for people who don't want to expose themselves to start successful careers online. Vtubers are the solution to this problem.
Asking me "who's my favorite V-tuber" is like asking "what's my favorite anime". I can't narrow that down to one person. I want to see Gordon Ramsay review one of Haachama's cooking videos at some point. I will say though, hearing a dog and cat sing the second opening of Nichijou was amazing and downright adorable at the same time.
As someone who have been in this hole for more than a year....ngl translators are the true heroes after all. Without them I might not even know about VTuber 15 months ago....

I was subscribed to Korone after watching her DOOM compilation. HololiveEN came out and I was like, okay those 5 and that's it. I don't want them to clutter my recommendations.

Hachama, I have no idea why. I guess the effort she put to talking English. And the weird shit she pulls off. She is either mad or genius.

We all know damn well the reason why it's become taboo over the past few months in particular: the tragedy of Mano Aloe. I was lost at first, there were so many generations and I didn't even realize Holo-EN, ID, CN existed until eventually their clips rolled into my recommended, but after about a week I was able to get a really good grasp of every single Vtuber, with the help of inside joke comments from the community and just the sheer amount of clips that float around
It was just pure entertainment and there's literally a character for everyone
Are you a toxic gamer? Try some Watson
You fancy Tyler1 as a Vtuber? Have a dose of Rushia
You like profanity? MikoP and Coco are there
There's just so much variety and uniqueness of each vtuber in one world that it really feels like an anime with immense character development to learn for every character, it's almost guaranteed that you'll be hooked in because of every vtubers different personality
Don't even get me started on their talent too, YAGOO jokes and idol jokes get thrown around all the time but their talent is no joke. Hearing Okayu and Suisei's singing for the first time really made me realize just how talented these "idols" could be. Calliope's rapping too is second to none, absolute lyrical genius. It wasn't long before I had a long playlist of my favorite hololive songs
I really have the community to thank for my good times watching hololive lately, I've been met with (for the most most part) so many recommendations and helpful comments that have allowed me to really learn and appreciate the culture of hololive
And last but not least before I end up writing an essay, the MVPs are definitely the subtitlers; without them I probably would've never found Hololive ever, and ironically I fell into the rabbit hole from one rabbit trap video... good times
Also side note: I'm glad you included da Holostar boys 😎👍 this video was super duper good man
Dude i see you everywhere
We might see him everywhere, but he be spitting truths. xD
Would you be mind to share song list of VTuber you have?
I will add a sentence of thank for Tokino Sora. The girl who at a young age carried and entire company worth of hopes and paved the way for many.
In other words simp 😏

Idk what you're talking about. Every one of them is a shark in disguise.
honestly getting into this "rabbit hole" was probably the greatest moment thing that's happened to me this year for a lot of the reason you laid out here.
But yeah, it's nice to get away from *gestures at world*
Too right!
Don't normally comment but damn, this essay encompasses EXACTLY what's sucked me in to Vtubers. Excellent video, Geoff! I appreciate the hard work you put into your content. :)

I’ve been trying to watch her assassins creed series ....
Protected from what? That doggo takes people's yubis and looks up torture techniques online. She can be scary
I think when Hell opens a portal, DOOG will protect us instead.
I don’t know but V-tubers and Hololive in general feel like a big family and when they’re doing well, you feel super happy for them. The kind of thinking that since they made me happy, it’s my turn to make them happy
I love how psychopass predicted this
If you’d told me eleven months ago that a shitpost-reviewing dragon, a murder-happy dog, a Keter-class kitchen hazard, and a smol shark girl would end up being my primary sources of entertainment for this year... I’d have probably been very confused.
Still a fun ride, tho.
This video was just hitting the feels too much.
It hits different right
Ladies and gentlemen, we got him.
"One of us!"

Me too. First watch gura, now my favorite is pekora. She's just so funny
Same, I followed Kizuna and caught glimpses of the other vTubers and I started following Korone from seeing clips of her on Twitter. But I didnt go all in till I realized that theres an EN branch
Their clips are either too hilarious or too wholesome, I can't stop
Have been in nearly a year in this Peko-hole. It is still quite fun, in fact so fun that i have to multitask to watch and special stream, or events or collabs. Free time is gone, i have to deal with this... i am so, SO far gone. Yet as you say, it is quite worth it.

Came for the Magic of Vtubers. Got a lesson about my social anxiety. Never thought I would get called out. Lol.

Me taking a quiz: Have confidence
Also me when I fail: No confidence
There is a reason that the official character profiles for vtubers tend to be quite sparse, and most of the details are filled in by the vtubers themselves over time.

first gigguk and now you... i like where this is going
Even before covid-19, I used "games" to communicate with people because I have a huge fear a face-to-face communication.
I do love vtubers because its a anime persona, but we can see and feel that there's a real person behind it.
SOLID video. Never really been able to describe the apeal correctly, but this does it very well.
It's a very good analogy to be honest. You're not the first one I saw point it out!
Interesting point. I only thought of it as improv.
this video efficiently covers all of the topics related to this aspect.
Killer video .
I think Gigguk mentioned this? Or someone else? O agreed then, I agree now.
Amen
JK the only god is matsuri
@@Ice-mg5pr true. A good example was on Kizuna AI's case. The real reason why the whole clone thing back then blow up (even tho non-chan wasnt replaced) was because people genuinely love non-chan's persona that is Kizuna AI, not some rando who act and speak like her. Same case with why GameClub failed miserably as they replaced the people behind their characters nonchalantly.

Hey Geoff,
I don't usually go out of my way to comment even on videos of yours that I really enjoy but I wanted to say great job on this video nonetheless. Welcome to the community!
as a person who never got into anime, vtubers, or streaming in general, hearing you talk about vtubers makes me happy enough to maybe start looking into those things a little more
This video reminded me of Super Eyepatch Wolf's video on pro wrestling, and made me realize that there's a surprising amount of similarity between Hololive and prowrestling
Was literally just asking my Discord server what the hell is up with VTubers
just give in already... just accept our anime streamer overlords. i know i have haha
@@watagashi_mitai C R I N G E HOLY SHIT

It's professional wrestling, but with anime girls playing video games instead of sweaty punch boys.
You HAD to have been a member of Kiara to watch that German teaching stream. I’m watching you, Mom’s Basement!
It just got publicly released at least
@@mortified0 exactly. It was released to everyone today, but I assume he finished editing this video in advance. He could’ve got this footage early though if he was a member...
Me 2 months ago: "I'm never watching vtube".
Me now: "All I watch is vtube".
edit: thank u for the skillshare MB
Preach it man
Vtubers replaced watching anime for me
Same. HoloLive EN has made them far more accessible now than ever. I'm in deep and I don't think I'm ever coming back. Not that I really want to...
Exactly how it goes. Never understood why people liked VTubers until I started watching them.
That’s me except at first I said “this shit is cringe”
damn this is the biggest 5head review. So accurate, especially with the horror section.
and in regards to the Minecraft section I feel that too, I used to watch The Yogscast and they had an amazing sense of community (back in like 2011) as they also had their own "characters" and stories that they played and coexisted in the same world, no cams back then either (I recommend their Tekkit series btw). and I have never been able to find this sorta thing again until Vtubers, who have managed to reignite that and it feels so great ^^
You've really changed my perception of vtubers, Geoff. Thank you.
Watching V Tubers.

......ohgoddammit
Damn you for tugging at my heartstrings with that clip of Ina, I decided to do some art because of her streams recently. ;A;
Legit sad that when you were talking about how artistic and talented the girls are, you didnt bring up AkiRose creating a WHOLE NEW LANGUAGE for a single song.
@Squalleon Kennedyheart what?
I like her ASMR song. Good use of 3d video too.
@@ODDnanref its *so* good. Most of her original music is. She has another ASMR song called Chocolate Pandemic. Its great too.
Have you seen her music video? That dance!
@@casteanpreswyn7528 He's not there yet. Give it time.
I hate you so much MB. You've prodded and poked at one of my most veered weaknesses. Everything from your choice of vocabulary to you're immaculate and very astute articulation to your very soothing yet enticing voice makes me just so weak and hungry for more your video essays. And that is why I've subscribed to you.
The fake is of far greater value. In its deliberate attempt to be real, it's more real than the real thing.
MONOGATARIII
was this a kaiki quote ?
I think I've heared this on Nisemonogatari.
I completely blame Trash Taste for putting me down the path of the vtuber fanboy...
Gigguk and his friends?
Same here, started with calli and I’m a tier 3 simp for kiara now

I blame Lost Pause, myself.
Bruh. This video hit the feels. ☺️ thx 🙏
As someone who have been in this hole for more than a year....ngl translators are the true heroes after all. Without them I might not even know about VTuber 15 months ago....
