There’s a reason why I want Studio Trigger to do a Sonic anime. Imagine how cool it would be to see a Sonic anime with such a fast pace in animation. Hell imagine if Trigger did their own take on Sonic SatAM/Forces. It’d be better looking than Sonic X at least.
Weilin Zhang is practically new to the industry but holy shit he's done some incredible work on Mob Psycho, Boruto and Jujutsu Kaisen. Everyone talks about Nakamura (and for good reason) but more light needs to be shone on the lesser known talent here as well.
Wow, when you said you owed your addiction to sakuga moments in anime I remembered falling in love with the robot in FLCL doing a jumping spinning whip kick in one of my first moments experiencing sakuga and was forever hooked.
"Tamers is dark" Yes yes it is, fun fact mildly related: it is directed by one of the 'Hellsing' writers(yes that Hellsing) who also happens to write in the Cthulhu Mythos
When I first watched the pink Steven scene in Steven Universe, I started crying and when my partner asked me what was wrong I said, “So many frames...”
I think some of my favorite sakuga has to be any part of the Castlevania anime where Trevor is swinging one of his whip or whip-style weapons around. Being able to animate a whip fighting style at all takes serious talent; being able to animate it to the degree of showing off in a sakuga moment is jaw-dropping.
Is natoshi shida in the video? I dont think ive noticed it, but that name is literally the reason as to why i decided to care more about the artists that make the good cuts and check sakurabooru
Sakuga is what made me fall in love with anime. When an animator is able to show their passion for their work, it just can't be beat. In my opinion, Sakuga is at its best when the animator and the writer have been inspired to accentuate the same moment.

Legit expected at least a few clips of Medabots. That show was absolutely filled to the brim with small moments of Sakuga, movement was generally amazing to watch in it.
I'm the kind of person who cans up their emotions and never cries over anything but... as an amateur animator, sakuga can bring tears to my eyes. Watching this video, with a compilation of many of my favorite sakuga moments and even more I wasn't aware of, almost made me cry. Thanks Geoff. This was a fantastic video.
Sakuga is amazing, and always will be, but I feel that audio direction is extremely underrated. Like certain shows that don't even have breathtaking animation still have sound design that just helps express the emotions of shows with emotional narratives.
The way Gaara's head sluggishly whips around to look at Rock Lee bouncing in and out of existence, as his sand barrier gets pummeled from all fronts, is an image that will never leave my mind. I'm thankful for the people who made my childhood come alive like this
Hi Geoff! Love your channel! Nailed the interior/hyper-detail to exterior Open World analogy. 😀I’d also add cinematics versus gameplay too. We load in a higher level detailed character models and lighting since shots are locked in place and don’t have to burn milliseconds rendering everything in sight when a player can swinging the camera around. 🎥 Source: I worked on SM. 🕷 The animation director is Bobby Coddington if you wanted to know (not sure of the specific animator credit for the shots back then though). Cheers!
I play your videos while I go to bed, cause you have a nice voice and the pacing of your video is great and easy to understand. Thank you for introducing me to so many wonderful anime.
One of the first sakuga sequences that i noticed as a kid was that time Madara was fighting an entire army in Naruto. And to this day imo mob psycho has the best sequences I've seen to this day (at least for a battle sakuga)
After watching this, I only have two questions: 1. "How is the money disbursed in an anime production?" 2. "Who in the production committee takes home the largest slice of the return?"
For question 2, each member of a production committee is ranked based on how much they invested in the anime project, and the returns are proportional to their investment. So the first name on the list, the one leading the production will most probably get the largest slice of the return. Of course circumstances vary between each production, depending on marketing, merch and events (there are a wide variety of revenue sources for an anime project) but my impression is that it doesn't stray too much from the above. From the outside there's no way to know the exact proportion between each member however.
Probably the scene in Violet Evergarden, when she tries to jump across the pond, while holding an umbrella... but that might partially be my anticipation for the blue-ray copy I ordered to arrive. Other than that, most fights involving Hiei from Yu Yu Hakusho had some good shots, but I might be letting my chuunibyou show too much with that admission
The Naruto vs Pain Fight. When Naruto transforms and he just brushes off every one of Pain’s attacks and jutsu, and then the Planetary Devastation/Chibaku Tensei moment, I was just amazed and awestruck, I had no words
Fr it was so cathartic seeing pain get absolutely stomped, and the insanely over exaggerated animation makes it feel like it lasts forever even though it only lasts a few minutes at best.
The biggest moment I've had where I was so blown away by how beautiful the scene was that it was an actual conscious thought was in the season finale of Demon Slayer in the Demon Castle
I've gotta say, I think I need to watch this video a second time. All the visuals just took me for a ride man. Could not focus on your narration and commentary for the life of me. My apologies. Actually, the views for this vid will probably be insane. So many recognisable gems. So much artistry on display. And from what commentary I did catch, well done man. Proper homage to one of anime's strengths. Visual "priority" is something these folks do with ease, and it's not easy. At all. Thanks for shining a spotlight on this!
as someone who is kind of backed into a corner and needing to animate something for school, this video did wonders and made me think back to a lot of separate pieces of anime I have seen over the year. I hope when I do get my shit together I can honestly take all I have seen during this video into account when making the animation I need to. My favorite sakuga is the sequence that plays as kyons final instance of deja vu hits at the end of the endless eight
I'm glad I finally have a word to describe this. A few years ago, I started an Anime Wallpaper folder for my HD TV I was using as a monitor. It got to the point that every time I'd watch a new anime, I would freeze-frame it at bits that seemed like they would make a good background for my TV. What I noticed as I poured through anime frame-by-frame is that sometimes I would definitely catch myself pausing at what I thought was an incredibly beautiful frame, only to find that my mind was playing tricks on me -- causing me to fill in details that were not there and warp my perception of dynamic beauty. Over the years, I learned to differentiate the truly beautiful, detailed, and fluid scenes from the "short-cut" scenes, and now I know that the name of the bits I considered to be wallpaper quality is "Sakuga."
When he clarified the definition of sakuga I thought: Yeah the monogatari toothbrush scene technically counts, but there's no way he'll put that in the editing.
well technically, depending on how you look at it it's easily a 10/10 scene, it has great animation, great voice acting, more fanservice than you'll find anywhere else, AND it even has a narrative purpose to be in the story. That's quality right there xD
He said a lot of wrong things and half truths in this video, but this is completely right, even though of course, SAKUGA for the japanese only means the stuff that doesn't have limited animation.
@@erufailon4723 Of course, I am so sorry that the corrector didn't recognize a word that is Japanese and not in my mother language, changing it. I can write 作画 for you if that's better.
I absolutely love Yukata Nakamura. Mostly for his work on MHA and mob. But everyone you've shown in this video looks amazing too, I've loved sakuga for awhile but I didn't know this much about it. Good video basement dweller
What a brilliant video! You succinctly put into words something I've always loved about anime, that I couldn't find the words to describe myself. Sakuga truly is core to what makes anime so magical, because, as you say, they can make the worlds and characters of their series tangible and believable in an artful, human way that lets not just my eyes, but my whole mind believe the impossible for a few moments. Other animation styles can evoke something similar in me, but rarely in such a personal way - in my opinion. When Luffy uses his Gatling punches on Rob Lucci in One Piece's Enies Lobby arc is a moment that's gonna stick in my mind until the day I die. The desperation, the up until then seemingly insurmountable odds, the insane pressure of the situation and how that moment releases all of it - the animators made sure I felt every fist impact in the very depths of my soul.
@@aylitrwygtctw37 why would I be trolling? From dorohedoro to now MAPPA has had top notch sakuga. Let's go back to dororo then, or maybe punchline or zombie land saga. Those anime aren't even from this year
They're getting better and better, but I wouldn't say kings. Bones, Ufotable and Trigger are still some of the best when it comes to intense action, and Kyoani some of the best with character animation work. Mappa is doing great tho! (and Dororo is underrated but had a lot of inconsistencies with animation during the last half of the show).
Love that you included Berserker vs Saber Alter as an example of sakuga because by the gods, the latter half of Lost Butterfly and basically all of Spring Song are pure sakuga, especially on the big screen.
I think maybe one of the most impressive pieces of animation I've ever seen is a shot from Modest Heroes by (presumed) Shinji Hashimoto. The main character is an invisible man, and the camera is able to fly Through his clothes in one shot. It really drives home that animation can do things that are literally impossible for any other artform.
Shinji Hashimoto's sakuga work is top tier. That scene in the third episode of FLCL where they are on the school roof because of that alien that is controlling Ninamori while Canti comes to the rescue is so beautifully made. He also worked on my favorite animated film, Tekkonkinkreet and that sakuga work was also stunning.
I like this deep dive into the power of animation! I know you tend to stick to the land of the rising sun, but I would LOVE to see analysis of the art western countries bring.
One of the first anime I watched was your lie in April and just seeing a snippet of that scene instantly made me tear up. I attribute a lot of my love of anime to your channel and the deeper examination of the shows and moments that I knew and loved for some reason. Thank you and keep up the good work!
the most beatiful sakuga ive remember its the last fight between naruto and sasuke in shippuden, seeing the end of my journy of watching naruto from since like 13YO was amazing
You have finally convinced me to watch anime ops. I’ve skipped them for years, always get so into what I’m watching that I just consume it like it’s $2 taco Tuesday. And thanks for explaining sakuga. Makes a lot more sense.
@@silverview_ both shows were produced simultaneously by the same studio and lots of people suspect the budget was heavily siphoned to konosuba because that season of seven deadly sins looked terrible lmao
I paused very early into the video to ponder what my first sakuga was. I grew up with Pokemon, Digimon, Yu-Gi-Oh, and Zoids (first NCZ and then Chaotic Century.) Digimon and Zoids: Chaotic Century were the ones that stuck with me for the story, that defined how I think about the heights (and hype) that anime can reach. So the first thing that came to mind was in Chaotic Century, the resurrection of the Death Saurer. There's an explosion. Heroes and henchmen alike wait tensely. And from it, you catch a glimpse of IT. The music kicks in, a church tolling desperately for sanctuary as we get extreme close-ups the Death Saurer as it powers up. Sprues begin to turn. Energy arcs between elements. And it's all so close you can't see what these pieces are a part of. That's really more direction and sound design. And then my second pick was the birth of Skullgreymon. And my third pick, that weird episode of Digimon when Tai and Koromon end up back home after Metalgreymon took out Etemon. It probably says something that I try to think of sakuga and instead jump to direction and sound design.

Being able to animate a whip fighting style at all takes serious talent; being able to animate it to the degree of showing off in a sakuga moment is jaw-dropping.

After watching this, I only have two questions:
1. "How is the money disbursed in an anime production?"
2. "Who in the production committee takes home the largest slice of the return?"
You should probably ask this on reddit or a forum. It'll get lost in the sea of comments here.
@@deus_ex_machina_ That's not a bad idea.
voice actors are ridiculous overpayed in the anime industry.

Yup, no way an infamous scene degenerates everywhere know will make the cut
It's in there
well technically, depending on how you look at it it's easily a 10/10 scene, it has great animation, great voice acting, more fanservice than you'll find anywhere else, AND it even has a narrative purpose to be in the story. That's quality right there xD
I HATE THAT I LOVE THAT SCENE AND I HATE THAT YOU'RE RIGHT

That is just the best thumbnail ever

Mappa is doing great tho! (and Dororo is underrated but had a lot of inconsistencies with animation during the last half of the show).

I really liked the pacing in this video! All the editing was also really well done, too, and it just goes to show the passion behind the project 👏👏

Ima be honest, didn't hear a word u said, gonna have to rewatch and shut my eyes
